The complicated part in our league is the scoring, but it's designed to make it so that 2, 3 and 4 player groups all have an average score of 2 and thus are comparable. 3 player groups are easy enough to explain. It's gets a bit messy with 4 player groups. Actually we don't normally have 2 player groups, so lets just ignore that.
In a 3 player group the base scoring is 3-2-0. but there's a bonus point that either goes to 1st place or 3rd place. If the 1st place player's score is more than the combined scores of 2nd and 3rd, then they get the point (for a crushing victory), otherwise it goes to 3rd. So it's either 4-2-0 or 3-2-1.
In a 4 player group the base score is 3-2-1-0 and there's two bonus points. One either goes to 1st or 3rd (if 1st beats combined 2nd and 3rd, they get it) and the other goes to either 2nd or 4th (if 2nd beats combined 3rd and 4th, they get it). So 4-3-1-0, 4-2-1-1, 3-3-2-0 or 3-2-2-1.
Nobody minds 3 player scoring, but a lot of people can't figure out the 4 player scoring. But we have software that makes sure it all ends up right. We try to have as many 3 player groups as possible, but that's mostly because you're playing together and 4 player groups take longer.
