I've tried to watch the first episode of Walking Dead twice and it's a total snoozefest. Haven't gotten past that except for a few random clips here and there. I hear the show is pretty much a great premiere, 5 episodes of filler, then a great finale. Rinse and repeat twice a year.
Yeah I love the timeperiod too. And advertising is a no-brainer for entertainment. All the best episodes revolve around the company, not the individual employee's lives. So disappointing that they never realized that (or willingly ignored it) to the point that it's almost non-existent in the final half season.
There was only one long stretch where I remember it being boring. That was pretty much most of Season 2. I am surprised you thought the initial episodes were boring, but then again it was setting the back story and many people seem to find those episodes boring. I love the show and I am cautiously optimistic for the spin off. Since it will start with the outbreak, it should be considerably different from TWD which picked up well after the start.
You sound like you've seen all 7 seasons. It's just the shame shit over and over. Do they think viewers don't want to see the characters grow and mature and learn from their pasts?

I mean, I didn't directly substitute The Wire for Entourage. But I have seen all 8 seasons of Entourage. They're pretty ridiculous to compare though. Entourage is sweet.

There have been episodes with flashbacks. At least one prominent one that I can recall. Nothing to the level of Lost.
I thought the first season was good if the dialogue a bit hokey, season 2 was pretty meh except for a few moments, such as an event which clears away one of the major drags on the show, which leads into the more enjoyable season 3. I really liked the first part of season 4,
The first part of season 1 is pretty so so as it's almost all stand alone episodes, world building, though the episodes usually sprinkle in a few tidbits of story that are important later, like the subtle emergence of the Night Watch. While the story quality is lacking a bit the characters are all enjoyable which helps you get through it. Fair warning the CG in the first few seasons is REALLLY rough, like sub-ps1 graphics.

Yeah PS+ is giving them a bit of a rarity boost (they're all around 20% on PSNP) but they are actually piss easy if you use a guide (after beating the game, of course)
