This was a lot of fun. The trophy list was very easy and I knocked out all but one by the end of the story. The last one is to have 16 conversations with a married couple who have been separated in time and space and after you beat the game it will tell you as you enter a map section if there are any conversations in that area. You can pick up the trophy before beating the game but it's easier afterwards since you can narrow down the remaining conversation locations easier.
The story is incomplete. Gravity Rush is half a game. The ending is completely tacked on and arbitrary and I'm certain that it wasn't what they originally planned. There was stuff earlier in the game that posed questions about Kat's background, opened up all this potential origin story stuff, talked about the time and gravity shenanigans, characters have really weird and interesting subplots that get started, and the game introduced some aspect of reality not being what it seems. Then the narration takes a weird turn near the end into a couple of guys militarizing the city and then immediately ends afterwards. It's pretty annoying, honestly, because it's so blatant that they either ran out of time or budget or interest. Maybe they didn't want to invest that much effort into a Vita launch title. Regardless if you play the first game you have to play the second to get the other half of the story.
The gameplay is very solid. Kat is extremely responsive and it definitely feels like they nailed the target of 60fps. I didn't notice any hiccups at all in that respect. The animation is really nice for all her movements and combat and flight are great. The only thing I might complain about here is the Gravity Slide camera--the angle is weird and sliding gets difficult to navigate as a result.
The challenges are pretty varied. They're all timed but there aren't more than two of any particular challenge--a couple sliding races, a couple challenges around killing as many navi as quickly as possible, etc.. It feels like there's enough variety to keep it interesting. Challenges do have a couple of issues, though;
- There's no option to cancel a challenge run and immediately retry. Due to the timed nature and some of these taking 3+ minutes even to get a gold rating, if you mess up and know it your only options are to continue anyway or exit the challenge completely, return to the main map, then re-enter the challenge This is a bit annoying.
- There's no option to end a challenge early upon completion of the gold. There's a mechanic for comparing challenge scores versus other people online, which is nice, but if I hit gold rating and I don't want to keep going it's possible to be stuck standing around for 2 minutes to let the timer run out so you can get the gold star.
The upgrade mechanic is pretty nice. As you collect gems or win gems from challenge rewards you can upgrade your gravity powers, combat, etc.. You get gems as rewards for bronze, silver, or gold ratings. The challenges require a nice mixture of skill and upgrades; if you're really good at using your powers you can get a gold rating without upgrading much. If you're having trouble then leveling up your gravity slide, speed shifting, etc., a few times and then returning to the challenge makes a big difference. There's definitely a skill requirement, though--a number of the challenges took me 5-10 attempts even fully upgraded to complete because you have to get familiar with the race course or where the enemies or items or located in order to move quickly enough.
Somebody complained about the Gem Aficionado trophy for the Vita version. This is for collecting 40,000 gems. I earned this challenge in chapter 17/21. It wasn't hard to do--I had a gold rating in 1/2-2/3 of the challenges at that point and was just doing a quick under and over sweep of each city section as it appeared. Before finishing the story I knocked out the rest of the gold challenges and still had tons of gems scattered around the city that I didn't bother collecting (in chapter 15? gems repopulate across the game world so there's plenty of extras to collect even in previously-explored areas.) After beating the game I had enough left over to max out every ability and still had 8500 gems left over. I'd estimate that I collected 60k+ gems by the time I was done. I'm not sure if the six additional DLC challenges upped the number of gems in the game, if they tweaked the gems for the Remastered version, or if whoever complained as just a lazy collector for the Vita version. You shouldn't have trouble with gems in the Remastered version unless you're deliberately not collecting the ones you see.
Kat's base costume is dumb. Raven's looks good, but as soon as Kat got costumes to switch to I did so. What a terrible design on the base costume. Bleh.
