My wifes web site - Nice jewelry good prices.

For hopefully the latestest most current up to date guide drops please refer to the

"CAG Strategy Guide WIKI page"

recent drop section

http://wiki.cheapassgamer.com/index.php/Category:Strategy_Guides_(recent_drops)

master list section

http://wiki.cheapassgamer.com/index.php/Category:Strategy_Guides_(master_lists)

they will be filetered from the thread posts to the WIKI page as often as possible. Thank you for your contribution.

Listed in the wiki is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals from the posts of this thread and similar threads. I will update the wikis lists as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. Please dont have a fit if a store wont let you have them just move on. Causing trouble rarely gets guides and most of the time stops others from getting guides in your area. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

What is a Penny Guide:

To answer this question fully, one first has to understand the longstanding legal agreemenat which [book] publishers have with book sellers such as Borders, Barnes & Noble and other chain and Mom & Pop shops, as well as other retailers who similarly sell their books.

For several decades, publishers such as Simon & Schuster, Penguin, Random House, et cetera will send out X-number of a title to stores to be sold. After a time, when it is decided that those older titles have little chance of selling and the store shelf real-estate would be better used for newer publications, they issue a recall to the vendors to field destroy all remaining copies of titles A, B & C.

The stores then will pull those titles from their inventory to be field-destroyed, and in their systems mark the publications as 1¢. The 1¢ price is to indicate to the publisher that they are no-longer selling the pulled title, and it is also to serve as a Red Flag to any cashier who might ring up a title (on the chance that the titles were not pulled as legally they were required).

When the pull lists are sent out by the publishers, and the stores adjust the price in their inventory (and pull and field-destroy the books), the stores also are to report to the publisher the number of the books they pulled. (This is generally done at a corporate level.) The publisher then credits the stores full cost of the books.

So lets say, MegaChain orders 8000 copies of the Bread Baker strategy guide for their stores in North America for say, $4 a piece. They owe $32,000 to Publisher X. Bread Baker being a big seller and a hard game, then sells 6000 of those 8000 guides, leaving around 2000 guides on the shelves when Publisher X issues the pull demand. Publisher X then issues MegaChain an $8000 credit for the 2000 unsold copies of the guide.

According to IAmTheCheapestGamer, some retailers also have deals where each copy of pulled titles sent to their recognized Recycling Centers are additionally issued further credit for being environmentally responsible in the manner in which they field destroy each book.

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.
question to you all...being new to this pennied guide thing just wondering could I go buy the guides now and price adjust them monday that way I can snag the good ones and save myself the time?

thanks,
bill123
not impossible but your taking a long shot of getting stuck with something that a store wont accept as a return or price adjust. I would do it but to much of a risk for something that has an opportunity to be rejected.
Hey Vahn, wondering if there was any chance the new price (.01) might possibly take effect of Sunday, as that is when the prices change for the new ad and such? Any opinion?
If for whatever reason the guides drop before I leave work tomorow afternoon, I will let you all know.

Thanks. I would like to say that I appreciate you getting us this info.

Yes i would NOT purchase and do price check, even if they honor new price which they may not you PROBABLY will piss them off and kill future deals for yourself and others.

I'll admit to dabbling in some hoarding a while back (which is pointless if you've ever tried getting rid of 10 or so copies of a really old guide) and this one employee who i think is the media manager saw me with two basket fulls of the same guides. He asked what i was doing and i was honest and said that they were on clearance so i was buying them up. Went to register and left store with huge haul that was impossible to get rid of down the road. End up donating and such.

Anyways, so on the next drop i goto this same store at opening time because it's the closest BB for me and i knew that as of a day or two ago there were multiple copies of those guides on the shelf. Walked in and they were ALL GONE, and that same employee was there watching me while smirking. Every drop since has been the same, this place is ALWAYS CLEARED OUT OF GUIDES after a drop! So i basically killed the deal for me and anyone else in my area and now whenever i go in this same employee always watches me like a hawk.

Moral of the story is either go in and stash a few or keep fingers crossed until they drop and when they do if you can still find them then DO NOT BE A HOARDER and leave a few for other CAGs which will spread good Karma!!!! Of course if they give you any flack then just be cool and walk away otherwise YOU WILL KILL the deal for the future!!!

No, they won't let you price match. Unike a clearance sale or anything of the like, these are marked field destroy. Sooooo, when you go to return them for the price match they will tell you that you can't price match. Also, they'll most likely tell you that you can't return it either (since it's a book, although YMMV on that).

There's a BB near me that always pulls the guides like clockwork so I asked the manager awhile back if it's possible to buy ahead and come back for price match on the new price.

The manager said normally on items that drop that's alright but not on guides since they are marked to be destroyed. At best she'd be able to return for the price I paid but she wouldn't be able to resell to me. So either pay the full the price or give the guide back to be destroyed.

Thanks guys for the quick response. I wasn't thinking of hoarding any just snagging a copy now rather than dealing with it mon morning.

Awesome. My TRU is extremely hit or miss with penny guides, but I'll def. check it out. I'd love a shot at that animal crossing guide.

Thanks.

Just like promised, posted 3/2/07 is the list of guides that will officially drop at Best Buy as of March 5th, so go do what you have to do to hide these or whataever, cause unlike a few previous drops, these have not gone down in price yet and WILL NOT until Monday, here is the following list

Sims 2: Pets (8100707 & 8113383)
Socom: Combined Assault (8142672)
Yoshi's Island (8202688 & 8116424)

So like promised, here is your list of the guides that will drop as of Monday, go out and do what you have to do to hide these so you make sure you get them, thank you very much for your patience, I told you guys you would be the first to know :)
Excellent, thanks! :)

I checked my store last week, and they had everything I wanted off the list except for Dead Rising. So if someone could grab an extra of those, I'll try to grab a extra of what I can and will gladly trade for it. :)

there's a list of guides I know I want and my BB has pretty much everything from the drop. I'll try to pick up a few extra KH2, Saint's Row and Dead Rising guides since I figure a lot of people will be looking for em

I may head out today to try and hide a couple guides, but usually when I do try that, someone always finds them and either pulls them or puts them back with the others(which either then get pulled or somehow 'lost').

Only guide I may want from both lists is Tomb Raider Legend from TRU, since I have assloads of the Battlefield 2 guide and have mainly been buying guides only for the games I wanna try and get at SOME point, if I don't already own them that is.

Other than that, I'd probably try for a KH II guide from BB, since I know it should be a wanted guide. LOL BTW, is KH an action or turn based RPG, as if it's in the vein of a Baldurs Gate(like Dark Alliance), I would definitely pick up the guide for myself for when I buy the game.

Can we buy these today (sunday) and have the price adjusted on monday? Otherwise I fear I will have zero luck. I have not gotten a BB guide in over a year. I think they always pull them.

I am thinking about doing the same. Hmmm. I think it would work, but........tough call
I am thinking about doing the same. Hmmm. I think it would work, but........tough call
You'd have a better shot hiding them in a washing machine.

On a serious note - people should take a look at buy.com for guides that you really want. They sell alot for slightly over $10. With the $10 off google deal, you can get guides for about what it would cost to trade someone here ($3 or so to ship)

Pretty much no chance at that. In fact, can books even be returned at all?

We aren't returning them though...

Yeah I mean aint it policy to adjust the price of anything within 30 days?
I agree that books is not something that's normally returnable, anywhere, but this is a price match.

Not a bad idea about hiding in a washer though! LOL

14 days... but still big chance of getting stuck with $500 out of pocket that they might not return or price adjust.

I don't think you should try buying the guides early. These guides are actually supposed to be destroyed, but BB for the most part doesn't do that very well. So I don't think they'd match the 1 cent price. That big a price match would seem strange to an employee and would likely bring down a higher up. I wouldn't want to attract any more attention to myself than I have to.

If you go back and read previous pages you'll see that WE'VE ALREADY DISCUSSED BUYING NOW AND RETURNING ON MONDAY....the answer is NO and to find out why then READ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I scouted two best buy stores today and found most of the guides on the list. I am a bit nervous about bringing too many guides to the register what should I do tomorrow? I do not want to draw attention to myself last time I bought the guides at best buy the security guard gave me a hard time asking me why they were selling me the guides so cheap.
i don't get it. if you stash a guide how are they supposed to put the .01 mark on it. is it in their cash register system?
I'll get around to updating the Wiki on Mon or Tuesday with the price drops.

What I do, and I always have the best of luck doing it, is bringing one other person with me, doesn't matter, just bring a friend. The plus with doing this is they look at you and you can justify to them why you have so many guides, cause if your alone, they can easilly assume your going to ebay them or something. With a friend, you can say that the guides are one for yourself and one for them, and if you have more then 2 copies of a particular guide at a store, you say they are for friends. Cause in most situations, you never grab at most more then 3 of one guide at a particular store. And if your friend and you stop at 5 stores, no one is the wiser.

Sometimes at my BB, the guides are marked on the shelf for a penny, and if that's the case, I just grab whatever the hell I want and take it up there. I've never had trouble actually buying penny guides at my local BB, but in a few instances they've pulled stuff off the shelves before I could collect.

I get people who ask why I buy multiples, and I tell them the truth. One for me, two for my brothers, and any others I trade with my online friends. They almost always say, "that's pretty cool."

oh btw, that was me idea :)

after the bb game drop list being posted originally here and then spread onto every site in the universe i thought we should all be a little more secretive about deals! That's why i never say guides are dropping to X amount, instead i just say they're dropping and we all know what that means so why say the price anymore unless it's different, eh? imo

Almost NEVER bring more than a couple of any one guide up. I always bring one for me, and one, maybe two for high demand ones, of any others. I also make sure to ALWAYS leave at least one of each guide (unless there is only one to begin with of course) behind, both for other people to grab, and also so a curious employee doesn't walk over and see it cleaned out right after I leave. Nothing kills deals like this at stores like hoarding.

Absolutely not, at least not until the regulars here have had a chance to get the guides for themselves (and others) first.

This is not a sale. It is a permanent price change to $0.01 with no new stock being ordered.
