Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread Nine

Status
Not open for further replies.
First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops or which ones you've grabbed to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Furthermore, I would like to thank our Wiki editors HeatDolphin and Rocko for updating the Wiki. Great job.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinavere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.
Unfortunately her porn website no longer exists, but she's still got a website over at www.raychul.com

She stopped working at the Cary, NC Gamestop in 2004, I think. To be honest, she knew a lot about games, but it's hard to overlook the soft-core porn background.
Isn't this the girlfriend of Dan "Shoe" Hsu, the former editor of EGM?
Somewhat off subject, but is there any reprocussions to canceling pre-ordered games?

A friend told me you can actually cancel, and keep the gifts...Which makes me laugh and encourages me to help game companies realize that pre-ordering is a dirty trick.

But yeah, thanks again...And I'm really getting syched up about finding a penny guide somewhere. I tried my GS, went for a Viva Pinata (first game), Tales of Vesperia, and Oblivion GOTY...All un-pennied, the manager laughed at me, then I explained why I was acting weird, he knew what I was talking about...Shit...

I do believe he murmured that they miss some guides, so maybe he's not such an ass afterall.

I hate pressure sales -.-
I hope you didn't explain too much. Talking about penny guides or the source of your info only ruins your future chances. Best to act dumb.
I hope you didn't explain too much. Talking about penny guides or the source of your info only ruins your future chances. Best to act dumb.
I don't know, I think I'd rather be truthful about it, seeing as I'll only be buying a couple guides and not hoarding...I'll be impersonal if I find out that the guy's trully an asshole. I'll start doing some mean shit if that happens.

Also, to explain...All I said was that I found out that they're sometimes incredibly cheap, he laughed about it.

Also I'm glad someone pointed out Gamestop's point system, that's bullshit and really makes me not want to spend my money there. Really, employees should only be evaluated on their performance with customers in terms of their knowledge, and how much they're able to help the customer. When it's a fucking 7 dollar an hour job, you shouldn't be criticized for "not" selling a pre-order, pay commission if you want your employees to hassle customers

Those assholes.

Kinda hard when a hoarder brings up 30 guides to act dumb. You actually were going to pay $600 for the guides. Oh look they are a penny? Cool here is 30 cents bye. lol
bad news for me at GC. couple guys got fired for selling me penny guides. it was the "straw that broke the camels back". so if any of you guys that got canned were CAG'ers, sorry.
sweet, love to hear about bad things at GS cuz i HATE that store and it's employees! Haven't been there in over a year but a few weeks ago i needed an older xbox game and their website showed it in stock so i drove down there and they couldn't find it so the guy says maybe someone bought it in between the time i took me to drive there, the other employee had this look like WHAT THE fuck because the store just opened less than an hour ago and i'm sure they'ed remember if someone just bought some old ass ancient xbox game. The employees there sux and the prices are horrible, will never shop there again even for penny guides!

they got fired from GC, not gamestop. no difference really though. new manager started chucking stuff yesterday for no reason. Got a wireless 360 controller (just needed a new joystick, already swapped it out and it works perfectly), super smash brothers (gamecube), soul caliber 2 (gamecube), animal crossing (gamecube), a bunch of ps2 games and there were a couple of guides. also got some fallout3 promo stuff that was never taken out of the box. plus i saw one of the guys that got fired, and we had a laugh about it. so it all worked out.

Wow, she really moved up from working the cash register at Gamestop. Her website used to be a pay for membership website for the above 18 crowd. I never paid for it so I can't confirm the content was completely pornographic, but if it wasn't, I don't know who would've paid for the site. If I remember correctly she told one of my friends that she was getting ~$10,000 a month from the site.

I only ever found out about the site because she handed out business cards for the site to customers with scantily clad pictures of her on them. I think my friend still has them (which is creepy in its own right that he held onto them for so long).

Too bad the reality is that companies evaluate the performance of their employees by the profits they generate, not by how satisfied their customers are.

So if I'm currently a GameStop employee, will I get a gig as a porn star if I quit? Awesome!

As for pre-order cancellations, there is no penalty to you, the customer, although there has recently been a big increase in pre-order bonuses that are available on pick-up only, so you might not necessarily get much from it.

Personally, I LOVE the idea of cancelling preorders on employees you can't stand. I feel like we should start a CAG initiative on this. Pre-order from good employees, cancel on the bad ones after collecting any pre-order bonuses.

That would be HILARIOUS, I think.

Just snagged Spore Limited Edition Bundle Guide for less than a penny today...The employee forked over the whole $.01 I owed...

I've a feeling Best Buy's going to hate me when I show up in the morning and go for the remaining four of them.

Thank you everyone, if you need one of the guides, hit me up. I'll be selling them on Amazon for a profit, and on here for shipping.
I bet you won't. :D
Good point, told my mother to shove it into the garage sale for a buck :)

I think I'll grab the other three regardless...I hate the thought of them just tossing them into the trash. The thought of Best Buy losing some money because they're lazy is funny too.

Ah... Yes they would. If they did what they were supposed to, they would be getting a refund from Prima for the MSRP of the guides.
Ah... Yes they would. If they did what they were supposed to, they would be getting a refund from Prima for the MSRP of the guides.
Yup, so by me buying that $35 guide for a penny, Best Buy lost $35.
Once you make them lose enough $$$, then they'll blackball you like they did me. It'll happen, it's not a question of IF but WHEN.
BB? how did they blackball you?
I saw someone got their reward zone cancelled and I hope that wasn't you.

Every BB around me pretty much denies me on guides no matter if it's the day of the drop or a month later, since I've grabbed dozens if not hundreds from the three stores around here.

Had two of my friends show up with me at the Best Buy...After two days, and my .01 purchase, they still hadn't taken the remainder of the Limited Edition Spore guides off of the shelves......We looted the last four of them.

Total amount lost by my local Best Buy because of me, this week....$175
Knowing that it was their own stupidity that caused it...................Priceless

I love you guys for allowing me to stick it to the man.

Again, like eugaet so expertly pointed out, Best Buy buys the guide (and everything in their store, for that matter) for less than MSRP, so, technically, while they lost a lot of money, they didn't lose $175.

Why would a company sell something for the same as they bought it?? That's the antithesis of capitalism.

Just wait till you get blackballed from buying penny items from your local BB. It'll happen. It's happened to me at every BB that used to let me get as many as I wanted. The media managers at both alerted the cashiers to either call them when something comes up .01 or just to NOT sell the items. PERIOD.

Mind you, I guess it could've been because I would come in and grab a cart and just go down the list I had brought with me and empty out the shelves when they dropped them. Funniest shit was when you get up the register and the cashier asks sarcastically if you're doing some light reading. Even funnier was when they start ringing up the purchase and the bags and receipt probably cost more than the whole purchase and you make a crack about it.

I forget what the number of items is, but the one time they had to do three transactions because I hit the limit on items for each one.

Good, it's their own laziness in my eyes. I really don't see why we as customers should be punished because the managers of a retail store aren't doing their job. They know the risk, they are well informed, why should I worry about it?

Honestly though, this time no one was upset about it...I just strolled right on out. I've a feeling that the girl at the register was a ditz, I just don't understand how out of two times, both employees weren't stunned and/or laughing.

It's a truly funny thing that I'm able to buy something for a penny, when does that ever happen?

Also, to the previous poster, it's not what they paid, it's their expected earnings from the item that matters. Nevermind, I am wrong, they pay less for the book, and are refunded that amount, or less. So really, I probably lost them 10 bucks, maybe less on each. Still, working for a retailer myself, that's not something to bat an eye at.

And back to Cheapest, how do you get the list of guides and their respected prices...Or when do you think the next update will be? I'm really interested in getting some guides I want, not just showing up to rip-off a crappy retail chain.

Thanks for all of the help, comments, and feedback, everyone...I love this site!

We have no clue when the next drop will be, though I'm shocked Toys R Us hasn't had one in a while now. As for getting the list of guides, people who post in the thread go out and check or we have our 'sources'(like fellow CAG fuss for Best Buy, for example).

My local game shop had 1-2 copies of that guide the last time I was in there, along with about 95% of my old collection of shit that I picked up over my first two years on CAG hoarding guides from about 6-7 different areas including my own.
Thehoweller, just keep tabs of this thread around Thursdays for GS drops and the first Monday of the month for BB.
Thank you thank you!

I'll still be visiting daily to further boast of the pennying exploits of TheHoweller and his dim-witted monkey-duo (just kidding, but I still hope those two don't read this)

Just to set things straight, companies like bb pay next to nothing for guides. Say supposed guide retails between 18-20 dollars, they pay even less then half that. So take a 20 dollar guide, best buy will pay 8-9 dollars for it at most (i've seen less for certain guides). This is the reason why most chains offer deals when you buy the game and guide at the same time, because there is more money to be made off the guide.

So months pass and guides don't sell, then comes time for the pennying process. The publisher of this 20 dollar guide has an agreement with the company to refund at least half (if not more) of what they paid in agreement that they field destroy the guide. The reason for this is because the publisher doesn't want a bunch of guides laying around that don't sell (madden or any sports guide), and after the cost of shipping, it just wouldn't benefit anybody.

So in the end of the day, if a company like best buy got 10 copies of a certain guide, paying 100 bucks for them for example, sold 8 out of the 10 for 160 bucks, that still leaves them with making 60 bucks at the end of the day. Not to mention the kickback they'll get for pennying those last 2 guides.

As much as you would like to think you're sticking it to the man for buying guides they plan on tossing anyways, it just doesn't work that way.

Last time I was at TRU, some of the guides were in the clearance cycle. You know, with prices like $9.98, $5. Is that something they always did?

My last haul was 57 guides, including 8 spore LE, 4 Soul Calibur LE and 9 madden LE. I even left several still at the store. I asked the manager if it was OK if I cleared them out. She seemed thankful since I was doing all the heavy lifting (and seriously, we're talking at least a couple hundred pounds). I kept the ones I wanted and sold the rest for 1-4 dollars a piece to a local retro shop for $80 cash.

The point is, if you think you might be balled for buying penny guides, ASK the manager after you buy a couple for yourself. Be honest about wanting to take them off their hands. If you're lucky, they'll give you the go ahead.

I guess I'm technically a horder (oh noes) but just to clarify I left numerous copies of each guide at the store. This location NEVER cleans the guide section out. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones, lol.

I think it's something new that many stores have started to do recently, rather than penny them out they'll drop them in price to $10 or $5.

Mind you, for a game I need a guide for, I'd buy one at $5 or maybe even $10, but $20-25 is ridiculous.

Watch out for these Prima guides. I was looking at the guides these morning to check if there are leftovers from the previous drop and these were the one that got stickered for 20% off by the employees this morning. On the last BradyGames drop, the same store had the guides stickered 2 days before the drop. I'm crossing my fingers for Dead Space and LOZPH.

Pokemon Ranger: Shadows of Almia
Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass softcover
Command and Conquer Red Alert 3
Need for Speed: Undercover
Dead Space
Sonic Unleashed
The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon

You're right about that. They were all Nintendo published titles from what I saw - Yoshi's Island DS and Pokemon Battle Revolution for $5.00 each. Already had both (for a penny each) so didn't pick them up at $5.

Thought I scored on Fable LE, Soulcalibur LE, and Zelda Twilight Princess at BB. They rang up as full price. Are there other versions of the LE or is my BB behind the times for some reason? I have gotten guides from the recent price drop so I know it works.

Did you get the Zelda WITHOUT the sticker on the cover?
I made that mistake on the March 1st drop day, since the "disclaimer" wasn't added to the front page 'til later.

As for the two LE guides,.... I think I recall some CAGs mentioning that their BBs raised prices after the 3/1 drop.
I don't recall which titles tho. Did you try the SoulCalibur softcover guide?

It had the white cover and the Nintendo sticker. Since that was the only one, I'm not sure about the others. The Soulcalibur softcover was out. I can only stalk this BB now and wait. They did have tons of Fable 2 so hopefully it will drop soon. Thanks for the info.

I wasn't sure where this went, but I found a coupon for 25% off any one item at Borders.com. This is for the online-store only and can be used by non-Borders members, which is ideal for those of us without a nearby Borders and/or without a membership. Since they also sell strategy guides there, I figured this would help all those looking for game guide deals. I already used the coupon for another book yesterday (I also tested it on a strategy guide just in case), as did my roommate. The link I found the coupon on didn't say an expiration date aside from "Limited time only," so if anyone uses it let me know if it still works.

Coupon Code: IPL1255

Just a quick reflection to the people who are still hanging onto their LE copies of Fable II, Gears II, etc, and passing on 2-4 guide trade offers, or $10+.
Sooner or later, the Standard guides will be pennied as well, and there were many more of them made. And many of us (who have been badgering you to try and trade with us) will no longer be making offers.
I know I've made several offers to some users on multiple occasions. Sooner or later, if I want something bad enough, I'll just settle on getting a deal from Amazon.
Speaking for myself. I'm just here to have fun and make trades. If I wanted to make a huge profit, I would go straight to Ebay.
