Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread Nine

Status
Not open for further replies.
First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops or which ones you've grabbed to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Furthermore, I would like to thank our Wiki editors HeatDolphin and Rocko for updating the Wiki. Great job.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

BestBuy
BookPool
CircuitCity
Gamestop
Overstock
StrategyGuides.net
ToysRUs

Thanks to floormat, Guinavere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

Anyone know what if the Lost Oddysee guide dropped at Best Buy yet? I saw one last night, but haven't looked at this thread in months.

edit: I saw that as of 12/01 that neither that or the 2pack Mass Effect had dropped. Will go back in just a lil bit and have them scanned (though I hate taking shit to the register and having them price checked and putting them back).

I can second this as I noticed all guides online are 25% off

I can third this since I read BB's ad this week.:)

BTW, FOnewearl, I'd always wondered what your username meant and I just found out last night. It still doesn't make much sense to me but at least now I know where it comes from.:)

It really has no meaning other then me coming up with a user name when I joined a Dreamcast forum years ago and picking something (generic) from a Dreamcast game being Phantasy Star Online since I used to pay play PSO Version 2 for awhile. I ended up just sticking with it instead of coming up with something new that is clever or witty which I have little faith in being able to do :)

It just might go down has the boringness (sp?) story behind a forum username ever :D

I actually noticed the 25% off guides checking Best Buy's guides online today but figured it was mentioned in the Sunday flyer, forgetting this if I did actually notice. The only other thing (barely) of note is that they had 86 guides and now have 85 which is probably just from a guide actually selling out online.
Man how are u guys finding these guides so cheap? I always go around CC, BB, etc and never find any guides on clearance =|
they are never advertised as a penny, they just ring up 1cent
they are never advertised as a penny, they just ring up 1cent
Actually, they are occasionally advertised by a price sticker at the store. I've seen several Best Buys have a penny price sticker on the shelf for the guide (or the guide itself) and I've even seen penny price stickers on Gamestop guides. It's occasional but it does happen.
I may have something different to say about that, and I think I get the last word on that. :D
in all due respect to you, i think the longer the thread goes the less horders we get, just my opion

I checked today and nothing I scanned dropped. I checked...

Call of Duty 4
Brothers in Arms
Hellboy
Fire Emblem
FFIV
DQ
Mass Effect Bundle
...and some more I can't remember off the top of my head.

Dang, Final Fantasy Tactics A2 did reduce in price at BB, but it's $13.49. Looks like I might have to snap it up very soon considering only 1 store near me has it.

Thank you anyway Antic.

Once again for the fourth time, all guides are 25% off at BB this week.

Thanks for checking the guides, Antic. We really appreciate you stepping up.

Normally, the gamers guides are at price $20.. with 25% off. that's $5 off. Not bad.
BB is good to us this week.

Amazon seems to be price matching on some of those, infact even better.
eg. MGS4, Assassin Creed..

Amazon will almost always have about 33% off any Brady or Prima guides. Not so much for Double Jump unless you pre-order.

I agree on that as well, since it seems that no one can get the idea that the second post on the first page has a list of drops that goes back over a year now and that it should be 100% accurate.

Mind you, from the road trip I took with my gf the other night to a far off BB I hadn't hit in a LONG time, it appears that whoever is cleaning out that store is more selective than me in their hoarding.

There were numerous AOT bundles left behind, as well as copy upon copy of God Of War: Chains Of Olympus and other stragglers. But, of course, the LE bundle of the Assassin's Creed guide and the SMG hardcovers were LONG GONE.

That sounds like me, except I even left behind some Phantom Hourglass and SMG hardcovers. I feel like no matter what, I don't need more than like 8 copies of a guide. I had about 10-11 Phantom Hourglasses, and I've been too lazy to put them on ebay, so I've still got 5. I just don't have the space to put them all, unless I start stacking a bunch of boxes in a corner or closet somewhere.

First I want to say thank you to you all who keep this thread updated, I just bought 9 penny guides from best buy for the first time and saved about $200 on guides for me and some of my friends. Luckily for me not many people in my city buy these guides and there were like 6 Hard Cover Super Mario Galaxys left.

Second, Many of you have said that GameStop and GameCrazy are really picky about selling you penny guides and some have said that GameCrazy lies to you about the price and says that it cost more, and because you can't see the screen you won't be able to tell what it is coming up as. So my question is has anyone tried to buy a guide after being lied to in order to see if the receipt will say $0.01 because they can't change what the computer will print out?

Sorry if this has been talked about in earlier posts I didn't read all 130 pages of this thread.

They'll probably manually adjust the price, many people here have reported cashiers and managers attempting to do this.

Ahh, I see. Thanks for the quick reply.

One other question to GameCrazy/GameStop employies, or anyone who might know the answer, what happens to you if you do sell a Game Guide at the 0.01 price? Do you get fired if you do it too often or is it just frowned upon?

Thanks!

I noticed something unusual on the Best Buy website today. All guides are supposed to be 25% off yet some of the guides listed on the website did not reflect the 25% off. Looking at these guides, I noticed a lot of them were previously pennied out guides that they never removed from the website (Lair, Heavenly Sword, Metroid Prime 3, Orange Box, The Sims 2 Castaway). But I also noticed a handful that were not known to be pennied out yet. This immediately prompted me to go to the store and check and (unfortunately) confirm they were not just pennied yet.

I am wondering, however, if this may be a "tip off" to what the next round of penny guide drops at Best Buy will be. Pure speculation at this point, but I'm trying to make sense why these guides are not reflecting the 25% off on the website.

These are the guides I'm referring to:

Call of Duty 4
Pokemon Pocket Pokedex Vol. 2
Spider-Man: Web of Shadows
Spectrobes: Beyond the Portals
The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon
Silent Hill: Homecoming
Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway
The Sims 2: Apartment Life
Mercenaries 2
Metal Gear Solid 4 (softcover)
Super Mario Galaxy (softcover)
Assassin's Creed
WOW: Dungeon Companion Vol. 2
WOW: Master Guide 2nd Edition

I also noticed these guides were completely missing from the site:

MGS4 LE
Fable 2 LE
Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
Lost Odyssey
Too Human
Tales of Vesperia
FFCC: Rings of Fate
FFXII

130 pages of thread? Damn. What are your settings on? Mine is set to FIFTY posts per page, which makes the thread a tolerable read.

As far as guides and other things ringing up .01 and them telling you otherwise, there's actually usually an unusual beep that will come up on Gamestop's computers when something comes up .01.

I've heard it before and if you listen close enough and hear that, you might be able to prevent them from out and out lying to you about the price.

However actually getting the guide for .01 or free is another story altogether.

Amen to that, I have had the people at Gamecrazy get a guide that came up a penny and call the manager over and he was ready to adjust the price back up to cover price because he said "There is something wrong and it should not ring up a penny "...

When I was visiting my family in Long Island for Christmas, one of the Best Buys had gathered up some guides and was selling them for $5 each. These included...

LoZ: PH (softcover)
Fire Emblem
Hellboy
Haze
...and a couple more as well that meant nothing really to me.

I ended up picking up some dirt cheap clearance from my local BB, and when the manager checked the Soul Calibur 4 LE guide in the system it came up with a "deleted" status. I have no idea what that means, but that's what it came up as.

This thread is manageable for me as well because on my settings I'm only on page 53

Sorry for not posting yesterday - having computer problems. But no drops at BBY yesterday - seems like they are trying to lighten the load with the 25% off thing first.

I just wanted to say thanks for this thread. I am visiting CA and went to some BB. I found Bully for 360 there and at CC found Stalker Chernobyl for penny. I did also pickup GTA IV and Fable 2 for $9.99 at Gamestop during their ad and also found Mass Effect for $10 there too. My BB locally always keep their Game guides updated and never have the choice of the ones I saw in CA. Actually surprised to see some available.

For this list, there were a few more missing from the site:

Civilization: Revolution
Crash: Mind Over Mutant
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion GOTY
Halo 3
Hellboy: The Science Of Evil
Legend Of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
Madden NFL 09 LE
Mass Effect (regular & LE)
Mysims Kingdom
Ninja Gaiden II
Pokemon D&P Pokedex
Soul Calibur IV LE
Spore LE
Super Smash Bros. Brawl

With those guides excluded from the 25% deal included, that's about 37 guides ready to drop.

fuss, it's a good idea I wish they did more often. I picked up the GTA 4 guide for $7.50 with the 25% off the $10 price, so hopefully, they'll do it again in the future.

loxthefox, if you're right, it's going to be some ridiculous penny guiding to be had if they all go at once. Even half of that would be a nice bit to go get.
On my settings I'm on page 27, but the amount of posts are the same for everyone - and trying to find information throughout 2600 posts is a bit hard sometimes.
Yeah, but even if we start a new thread and someone wants to find information in here, they will STILL have to go through 2600 posts, so what's the difference? Besides, what information do you need that's not on the first page, anyway?

I've never gone on to look for penny guides (except in NY when I was near this place that frequently pennied them out and threw them into a bargain bin..), but I decided to look today.

Best buy was pretty up-to-date, but I did find Bourne Conspiracy and Chaotic for 1 cent each. Enemy Territory was actually 68 cents. Still good, but maybe OP should update to reflect this? I'm just being picky :D

Too bad I couldnt get in on the Zelda or Mario hardcover guides. Oh well.

Hah, I think I sorta lost focus of WHY we were comparing thread pages. Most info is on the first page right away, so yes, that is EXTREMELY helpful. Yopu really wouldn't have to search much. I think the only times I've had to search is when a drop happens and about 10 pages add the to thread in a few hours - it gets hard to find originating posts sometimes. But that would happen no matter if the thread were 10 pages or a million.

And then it's added to the first page pretty darn quick nowadays.

In fact, that's more of a "why do we have so many posts on what people got.." sorta thing. That's where the problem lies.

I picked up a copy of the GTA IV guide when I bought my PS3 in April and I bought a second copy of it for $5 from a local shop for a friend. However, she and her family were short on cash and they subsequently didn't want the friggin' thing.

I paid FULL PRICE for the one I picked up with the PS3, since I had $130 in cheap credit from FYE from flipping season box sets from the show 24 that I got for $4 each from a Salvation Army in NY state.

Thanks for posting the ones I missed. I knew I missed a bunch of them. I'm guessing there may be a huge January drop at Best Buy, but we shall see. Some people may want to start hiding some of the sought after guides in the washing machines and dryers :D

I'm kidding of course.......or am I  :booty:

My first guide pickup in months. At a Best Buy far away from my house I got 5 Orange Box guides. There were probaby more but I haven't looked at this thread in a month or two so I don't know which ones.

I picked up an Orange Box guide as well from BB, but I have another story from GC.

I finally found an older version of the Bioshock guide, and I take it up to the guy to get it. When he rings it up he gives me a shifty eyed look and then calls his manager. "This guide is zeroed out, so what do I do?" He asks if I am a MVP member(i'm not), and so he says if I sign up then the guide will be free. I say no and just walk out. What crap.

Believe me, my friend, I've made that comment many, many times, then I get blasted about it almost every time. We have a discussion thread for those sorts of things, but people still find it necessary to report to everyone what they found. If I was a mod, I would delete posts of people talking about what guides they bought, unless there was new information.

I really, really couldn't care less about the 23 Transformers guides you bought at BB, for example. That's where a majority of the clutter lies. People continue and continue to type out those sorts of posts and it is really frustrating because, like you said, the thread gets unnecessarily lengthened.

They did the same thing to me. I talked about it here: http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?p=4873281#post4873281

in the reduced guides discussion thread.

It's been a topic of heated debate for quite some time...
And everyone's done it at some point. I try really hard to remember to go to the discussion thread (where this should be I guess).

At first I didn't like the idea of two threads, but at this point I wouldn't mind seeing useless posts blasted outta here. (Which would probably include this one :p)

I find the first few such posts helpful, so I know the first report of a drop isn't a local/regional fluke and isn't user error (e.g., first report is that the LE dropped when it was the regular edition, or vice versa). After 2 or 3 confirmations, however, I agree: take it elsewhere. But they won't.
