Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread Nine

Status
Not open for further replies.
First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops or which ones you've grabbed to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Furthermore, I would like to thank our Wiki editors HeatDolphin and Rocko for updating the Wiki. Great job.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinavere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.
Cool a near by CAG. Yeah the bestbuy in seacaucus pulled everything but Crisis core (x4) at 11:30 am the day of the drop. They had a lot too. I left everything thinking they will be there later, but the pulled them fast. I only picked up Fable 2 guide. they had all FF guides(x7 each) and most of other drops. did u ask them 2 check back?
Yeah I did, and the girl went back there & came back out & told me they had nothing back there which of course I did not believe but I didn't argue since I hit it big in the northern Paramus store. I knew that they had all those FF guides which is the main reason why I went back to the Secaucus store. I hit that store last drop in Nov. & they had massive amounts of all FF guides. I just wish I did not have to work until 5 on Monday, I would've been there early.:bomb: BTW I'm really not that nearby lol! I work in Chester, NY & live in Milford, PA. I just took a "scenic" route home!
That scenic route cost you more in gas than those guides are worth :)
I used to do that ALOT too, but usually it wasn't MY gas. My one friend(ex gf who I used to hang out with alot)and I went to southern PA, far northern NY and all around NJ for them at one point.

Hell.....the one trek to Atlantic City took EIGHT hours instead of the usual three.

LMao going to Atlantic City to get guides. Now that's hardcore

Actually, I mainly hit the one exit off of the PA Turnpike down around Philly(Springfield area). The Best Buy down there was a varitable gold mine of old drops EVERY time I went down there. They would have 100+ pennied guides on the shelves.

Mind you, since I don't gamble, that was about the only truly fun thing I'd do en route to the casinos.

Between the Carousel Mall(in Syracuse, NY area) Best Buy and the Springfield one, I probably amassed more than 2/3's of my old TL of guides I used to have. Couple those with a couple of really huge runs to Middletown, NY to their BB and that just speaks of how nuts I was looking for those things at one point.

Of course, most were useless and worthless, so I felt no pain when I dumped 95% of them to the local shop for $100-150.

Was curious about the posts that BB had raised the prices on some guides back up from 0.01. So I checked out my local BB and SW Clone Wars rang up $14.99.

I picked up a couple of these guides for 0.01 on Monday from the same BB.

I hope this doesn't lead to BB penny guides becoming more of YMMV deal.....

I can safely speak as someone who used to live in "that" area, it is most definitely NOT worth it to drive around NJ to get guides. Awful experience :(

It won't be too bad if the day they get pennied they stay $.01 and only go up a few days after the drop. It's not as great as them staying a penny but its still easier to get them then at gamestop

I beg to differ. I've found quite a few rare guides in these parts;)

That may be true but the traffic is god awful. I don't know why you guys who don't even live in NJ would venture off to Paramus/Seacaucus to get guides. You're nuts. This is coming from someone who used to live in Bergen County (and thankfully moved out :)). So yeah, you guys are crazy :)

Speaking of which, the Springfield store is still a goldmine. I went there on Monday night and they had virtually every guide from the latest drop. I picked up a few and left a ton remaining.
Lol, yeah the traffic is horrible. However if you go later in the evening after rush hour it's not too bad ;)
Or early in the morning. Rush hour really does suck ass here in Bergen County. Going for guides at 10 AM when stores open is your best bet instead of night time. I usually pick up some traffic on Route 17 and 46 while trekking out to best buys and gamestops at night. It is a down right HORRIBLE experience. I just hope I don't get stuck in traffic while going home today. I get out of school at 9 PM and have a 15 mile drive down route 17-S to go home.

So I've apparently developed something of a friendship with some clerks at my local GS. I picked up some guides from them in the last two drops, and one of them asked me if I had an extra OoE guide since he knew I had grabed at least two. I brought it to him today, and he let me grab a few guides from this big box of pennied guides they have behind the counter.
Awesome.

So, I hit 2 GameStops today #1)had absolutely nothing from any drops #2) had a decent selection. I was surprised that GS #2 had stuff and figured hell I'll grab what I want and head out.

I grabbed;
007 Quantum of Solace x1 out of 2 copies
Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 x1 out of 1 copy
Far Cry 2 x2 out of 2 copies
Legend of Spyro x1 out of 2 copies
Viva Pinata: TIP x1 out of 4 copies

brought them up to the rep, they rang them up at a Penny each. Then they said they had to call the manager to see if they could make the sale. Long story short "the manager on the phone" said that pennied out guides are not to be sold to average consumers, but they can be sold at full retail or sticker price instead.

What the hell is that, just deny me the fuckin sale and say we can't sell these to you. Don't feed me some BS about me being able to buy the guides at full price. I suppose I should have just tried grabbing one that I really wanted and tried for the others after that.

In the end I came out with zero guides YAY! atleast the stores were not out of my way. I may try a couple more when I go to pick up my wife from the airport later this evening.

Finally got worked into the schedule at Gamestop and low and behold they haven't tossed away all the guides yet. I managed to get

(5) Phantom Hourglass (sealed)
(3) SMG (sealed)
(2) Pokedex
(1) Battlefield Company
(1) Brothers in Arms (sealed)
(1) Sonic Chronicles

I would of got more but these suckers are heavy. Willing to trade the doubles if anyones interested.

My second bout with Gamestop proved to be a bit more to my liking. After about 15-25 minutes of conversation with 3 gamestop employees I decided to try my luck. I could only find one guide Castlevania: OoE, they joked about not pulling it when they were supposed to then gave it to me. I inquired about other guides they might have, but they said Far Cry 2, Gears of War LE, and Fable II LE had all been disposed of. I did manage to stumble upon a Tales of Vesparia before I departed the store and they gave that to me as well.

I walked out with;
Castlevania: OoE
and
Tales of Vesparia

both decent guides

Was going by so I stopped at Best Buy for a second and found Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise.

Paid for 1 cent with my debit card, haha.

Don't do that. That's going to piss them off.

Retailers are charged several cent fees for every debit/credit card transaction so Best Buy is going to end up in the negatives for that transaction.

Heh, I used to pay with my debit card. Now I just hit the store with a bunch of loose change. It's quite funny when there's a line at check-out, a big stack of guides being purchased with only a few few pennies and a dime.

I'm surprised they let him use one for a penny transaction. The machines at my local Best Buys won't let you make a debit or credit card purchase unless the amount is >= 0.75

Bad news - all the pennied guides from Monday were off the shelf last night. I asked the rep and he said sometimes corporate calls and they have to send them back. WTF? I did find a Cheat Codes book for a penny. Of course, when I took it to the clerk, they were like "Oh, I need to check this with a manager...".

I'm always amazed how the clerks have no idea what's going on in the rest of the store.

Unless some of us are actually buying stuff at full MSRP from stores like Best Buy, Target and the rest, we're already looked down upon as 'devil customers', so why should we really care if we put a store into 'the negative' for a penny transaction?

The worst that could happen is they pull a Circuit City and go out of business and even though I've bought thousands of dollars worth of guides for pennies, I know I'd still be able to find them through the local shop for a pittance. So, if BB goes under, it's really NO big loss to me.

I think the point isn't that it'll make them go out of business, but that it'll hurt chances of finding penny guides in the future because they'll crack down harder.

It's like the Giving Tree...if it got chopped down, mashed up into pulp, and printed into a strategy guide.

Like it wasn't hard for this drop? This is just Best Buy's usual every so often crackdown they do. But if you don't have cash on you(sometimes I'm even without a single cent of actual change), then why shouldn't you be able to use your credit/debit card?

There's a giving tree across the field, though, it's his cousin.

You need to threaten to call your state department of consumer affairs and/or board of weights and measures, whichever is responsible for pricing.

In California at least, whatever the lowest ticketed price is, is the price they MUST give it to you. So if you find an old price tag from a sale from last week that is no longer valid, if it's still on display, the store MUST give it to you at that price. Same with electronic scanners - whatever the price comes up as, is what they must accept as payment, penny or not. Now if there are NO price stickers for a penny on the guides, i.e. they're marked at $14.99 or whatever but ring up, this is a grey area.

You can always threaten to call the Department of Consumer Affairs/Board of Weights and Measures on them and hopefully compel them to sell you the guides at the price that has come up, but stores do have a way out (if there are no price tags indicating the penny price, they can claim the price was entered into the computer system wrong...obviously in the case of 50 different guides being a penny, that argument is pure bullshit though).

Picked up 2 FFCC: RoF guides at Cerritos, CA BB. There were still copies of Battlefield: Bad Company and Too Human guides, along with a couple other penny guides.

FWIW, when I went to my Best Buy the clerk went to the manager, etc (long story). Eventually I spoke with the manager one-on-one and he said that if the clerk rings up more than 3 pennied guides, the system flags them (which I guess is a bad thing). So I guess it's better to just buy 3 guides at a time? They said only 3 per customer, so I just went to my car and came back in like 10 times to get most of the good ones they had :p

Everything was gone at the Best Buy in Garland. Probably pulled, so I'll ask a friend that works there if he can hook me up.

That doesn't really make any sense. At my Best Buy, we left the extra guides on the counter and allowed people to just take what they wanted.

I got alot at my Best Buy today:

Fable II LE x6 (looks like 3 might be claimed)
Assassin's Creed x4 (one may be claimed)
Soul Calibur IV LE x6
360 Achievements Guide x4
Dragon Quest IV x4
Too Human x4
Super Mario Galaxy Hardcover x2 (looks like both may be claimed)
Zelda PH Hardcover x2
Fire Emblem x4
Civilization Revolution x2 (1 may be claimed)
Hellboy x1 (may be claimed)
Final Fantasy IV x4 (1 may be claimed)
Final Fantasy Tactics A2 x3
Final Fantasy Tactic WOTL x2
Final Fantasy Crisis Core x2
Tales of Vesperia x5 (2 may be claimed)
Via Pinata TIP x5
WoW Beastiary x4
WoW BC x2

I left a ton more there. I also saw the Sims guides, Spider-Man, Brothers in Arms, and a few others on the list.

Madden, Spore, Fracture, and Bad Company scanned for full price, and I had her scan both upc's and both reg and LE versions. I really wanted Spore :(

If anyone wants to make a trade, send me a PM with your available list.

My jesus, someone was a lucky camper today.

Went back to the BB again today, got Elder Scrolls Oblivion GOTY Edition, Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn, and Mass Effect + Art Book for 0.01 each.

As reported before, Star Wars Duel Sabers(?), Madden 09, Spore LE, Wario Lan Shake It!, and BattleField Bad Company rang up full price.

This reject Media supervisor guy was following me in Best Buy. Finally he garnered the courage to walk by me and comment, "Wow, getting a lot of guides huh?"

I walk to buy them and he follows me to watch the transaction. When it's almost done, he tells the cashier "Hold on before you finish that transaction."

Then he asked me, "Are you an employee?" I told him no and he said, "Is there any particular reason why you know about these guides being a penny?" I laughed at him because he was trying to make it seem like some impossible crime I was commiting. I told him a friend told me about the sale on the guides.

He finally left I wait five minutes, which I count with my phone, while he stands at a computer off in the distance doing nothing of any importance. He comes back and says, "Are any of these duplicates?" I had picked up an LE of the Mass Effect Guide and the normal edition and I told him these were my only duplicates. He walks away and stands at another computer, doing nothing I presume and comes back after a few minutes.

He told me, "You can only pick out three of these." I said, "That sounds arbitary" and he got immediately defensive, like all trolls do, and said, "I'm just telling you that's all you can have." I asked him how he arrive at the amount of three guides and he repeated himself. I sighed and picked out the LE of Mass Effect, Sonic Chronicles, and Tales of Vesperia. It friggin sucked to have all of those guides taken away. I guess he could have told me no on ALL of the guides, but it still pissed me off. I would bet a 100 dollars he bought them for himself because he took them and set them aside at his computer.

This store never pulls guides, and I doubt they're gonna start because I try to buy nine guides. I am so tired of these managers and sups at Best Buy. They all come across so high and mighty. If I have to listen to another squeaky 19 year old in a shitty blue polo try to use me to inflate his ego I'm going to sock the shit out of him.

Lol. They are all wiseasses at the bestbuy i go to too.

which is why i dont go there very often, if i do I just bring my shit to the register and pay. i avoid any conversation. but i have yet to buy any penny guides there. i just get in and get out.

Went to 2 Best Buys in Minnesota; Roseville had pulled everything but Blaine still had Fracture, Spore, and Bad Company. None of them rung up for a penny. Fracture and Bad Company were $14.99 instead of the $19.99 marked Price and the Spore Limited Edition was $24.95 instead of $34.95 but not a penny. Looks like the jig is up around here.

There must be no CAGs in Grand Rapids. I just got back from Best Buy, and they hadn't pulled any of the guides. I picked up a few Sunday, and somehow nearly all of them were still there today - even though most of them were MARKED as a penny.

Yeah, it surprised me. It's been a long ass time since I have gotten more than three or four.

Man, I had 14 PM's from people wanting to trade guides, lol. Most of you want either Fable II or Mario Galaxy.

I need lists or links to lists so I can figure out what to trade for. Also, I hope none of you mind, but I'd rather have you ship first. I have done only one trade here but it was a good one. A couple of you offered to ship first right away, so thanks for that.

I was racking my brain trying to figure out what I wanted, and I'll list them here:

Spore LE (pretty much all of you offered this, lol)
Mass Effect LE (preferred, but Reg will be fine)
Call of Duty 4
Bioshock
Dead Rising
Marvel Ultimate Alliance
Rock Band
Lego SW/Indy/Batman
Orange Box
Midnight Club LA

With only 1 feedback you should actually expect to ship first. I'm not trying to be rude but you're not really in a position to dictate shipping terms. It's standard procedure to for someone with very low or no feedback to ship first. The good part is with all of these trade requests you should be able to up your itrader rating fairly quickly.

Well someone shipped before and trusted me, so I ask the same. Sorry, just the way I am. Been burned way too many times before. I understand if you'd rather not deal with me.

You're talking about penny guides here, not some video game system or rare game. With low feedback you should at least ship at the same time as the person trading with you.

Zelda PH
Orange Box
Midnight Club LA
Better yet, why don't you list them where they belong...in the TRADING forum.
