Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread Nine

Status
Not open for further replies.
First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops or which ones you've grabbed to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Furthermore, I would like to thank our Wiki editors HeatDolphin and Rocko for updating the Wiki. Great job.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinavere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.
Out of class now. Here's the list of guides from Game Crazy today:

Code and Cheats Summer 08
Command Conquer 3
Condemned 2
Eragon
God of War
Kane and Lynch
Mario Party 8
Medal of Honor Euro Assault
Naruto Ultimate Ninja 2
Naruto Uzamaki Chronicles 1
Naruto Uzamaki Chronicles 2
NCAA Football 2008
Ninja Gaiden Sigma
Oblivion Revised and Expanded
Pokemon Complete Pokedex
Rainbow Six Vegas
Rogue Galaxy
Shadow Hearts From the New World
Shadowrun
Sonic and the Secret Rings
Sonic the Hedgehog
Timeshift
Video Game Acheivements
My price check cannot verify any of these. I either did not see them or missed them.
No strange beeping noise. It was at full price in the screen.

I will go today and check some out.
Sometimes, if it isn't the EXACT day they penny them in the system, the guide will come up as full price or it may be that GC may have to manually mark them all down after receiving a memo from corporate to penny and destroy them.
The very first time I tried to get guides from GameCrazy, it went very smoothly and the employee was very helpful. Ever since then, I've only run into people who've lied to me about the price and tried to pocket $5 or $10 from me. If I ever call them out on it, they're just like "oh yeah, we can't sell that to you, anyways," as if they didn't just try to sell it to me. Hopefully there are some good drops for you guys to get in on, but I'm not wasting my time.
That sucks. My GC is just the opposite. It's absolutely overflowing with guides, so much so that one of the guys there actually said they wished they could penny guides for me to get rid of them. At least I got a Zelda Windwaker guide (NP) for a penny :)

I had no troubles at my BB. The cashiers were all "no wonder you're buying so many." I only bought what I could carry. Brought them to my car and went in again for more.
Yeah I noticed that too.. Since youre in Texas I dont know if it was at the same one I went too. (Kinda off of Hulen) but I didnt try to scan them, I figured they knew what they were doing.. But none of the other BB did that in the area. So I hope it doesnt catch on..
Yup, that's the one. I'm always late to these drops, so I didn't bother to check the other Best Buys in the area (the last time, the Hulen BB was the only one I found guides at anyways).

I got lucky today. Unlike the Best Buys near me which seem to never pull penny guides, the Gamestop's around me are pretty top notch about it. I somehow found two Civilization Revolution guides though at one near my area which they seemed to miss. He rang them up and said, "I can't even take your pennies because once their pennied we're not supposed to sell them so just take them." I thanked him and then left.

I like to hit up the penny guides as much as I can - and was even lucky enough to drop a first post last year. However, I was wondering if anyone else who is a "regular" was having a hard time with this last round?

My 2 Best Buys pulled everything right away and only one of them allowed me to buy 2 guides "from the back" after much awkward silence and standing around. The CSR was at pains to point out that they had received an e-mail stating that they should not be sold under any circumstances.

My favorite Gamestop where the manager holds one of each for me also said that this was at an end as they HAVE to put them in the dumpster from now on as they got some heat for letting them go when they have been pulled.

Just seems to me like every single place where I would usually have some success has now been told to stop it by "corporate" and that they are totally onto the whole thing. I guess it was not going to go on forever - but it seems weird that it would all stop at the same time over 2 drops......

Cheers

G

I've been back to gamestop, and still the guides are ringing up full price. And I had a clear view of the price on the register. Sigh.

Edit: GameCrazy. Sorry about saying gamestop.
I've been back to gamestop, and still the guides are ringing up full price. And I had a clear view of the price on the register. Sigh.
Do you mean Gamecrazy by any chance?

A couple pages back there was a question as to whether the Tales of Vesperia strategy guide was raised back up in price at Gamestop.

I am just confirming that the Tales of Vesperia guide is still pennied out at Gamestop.

Confirmed it myself today.

I managed to pick up a few today. For the first time, a cashier wouldnt sell them to me and actually called a manager to ask about it. I told her it was a clearance item but she said she needed verification. I got the okay but usually most just sell it as if it were a normal purchase

All I found a my favorite Best Buy were 3 of those multisystem cheat books and a single Head Coach 09 guide.

Blarg.

got silent hill...... ive seen neverly all those guides at the 2 best buys i went to.... but they got cleaned out :(

one more best buy 2morrow!

cheers

Okay, just to clarify now, the Game Crazy guide drop was a memo to field destroy, but I don't believe that the prices have been adjusted to $.01 yet. Sorry for not getting this detail in sooner.

That sucks that some of you are being denied penny guides. I went to 3 BBs today and 2 of them had very little in stock. I really don't think they pulled their guides since they've always had a smaller guide section. The other BB pretty much had every guide in stock except for Infinite Undiscovery. They had alot of the Spore LE guide.

Picked up:

Battlefield: Bad Company
Spore LE bundle
Warioland: Shake It!
Brothers in Arms: HH
Quantum of Solace
Fracture
Silent Hill: HC
Bioshock PS3
Soul Calibur IV
Midnight Club: LA

I don't think I've ever seen Infinite Discovery at the BBs in my area. I only recall seeing that guide at GS.

lol, that makes a lot more sense now. someone is dumpster diving this evening. :bouncy:

Apparently, I've been blackballed from getting guides or anything that rings up a penny from my other local BB. I found out that after the last time I tried getting them, the employees were told not to sell anything coming up as a cent under ANY circumstances.

Oh well....looks like it's the end of my collecting days for now, until they grow lax again.

LOL you've made a name for youself on and now off the internet! You could always go back to some old school dumpter diving, jking. Where do you live? Is there only one BB there? Well i know i've got your back and i'm sure other CAGs here also do for all the years you've been on here! So if there's anything you need when a drop happens just let me know and i'll grab an extra one for you!

Broke my penny guide cherry and found 007 Quantum, Bioshock, Midnight Club LA & WWE SvR09. I hit another location that had tons of stuff on Sunday and they were cleared out, so either there is someone else who knows, or the store just tosses em.

Caught a GC employee in a lie 2 times today....

me: "Do you ever have guides that get pennied out?"
GC: "No I'm not sure what you mean"
me: I explain the way it works and that I saw a huge stack of guides about a month ago as they were being pulled.
GC: "Yes we have to ship these directly back on the truck". - LIE #1
me: "Well that's strange cause I came here a month ago and you guys were pulling off a HUGE stack of guides, then why do you still have them in the back room?" - I noticed they were still there a few days ago when the door popped open and low and behold all the guides were there.
GC: "Those are just the older guides that we don't display on the floor because we already have a few of them out but extras are in the back." LIE #2
me: "It isn't because you have to field destroy them?"

At this point the guy's jaw drops to the floor
GC: "Did you work at a GC before or something?"
me: "No, but I know enought about the store policies and its kind of dissappointing that you have to lie to me about what happens when you have no idea how much I know about the way things work".
Now the dude apologizes over and feels like a retard and said that he's required to toss them. He agreed that next time I come in and there's more than one person working that he'd go out back to "toss" them and at this point I'd come in and scoop them all up.

Not bad, considering I would've never gotten any of them the normal way. This guy said he'd hold whatever he could in the back and take them out to toss whenever I'm around.

Way to act like an ass by trying to make him contradict himself. If I were the guy, I would have just shut you down right there and denied you of any penny guides at that point and in the future.

I can also confirm those guides from the Gamecrazy list are supposed to be field destroyed.

I was attempting to get some guides but like someone reported earlier, the prices were still at full price. I'm hoping that I can score some guides when they are ringing up a penny. Fortunately, I'm cool with the store manager and he put them aside for me to pick up at a later date. Shadow Hearts and Rogue Galaxy were the two guides I was really after.

Fine. He lied. Big whoop. He still isn't supposed to sell them. I don't know what you feel you really accomplished by making the guy feel stupid just for doing his job. I would have lied too and then kicked you out of my store if you acted like that.

Honestly, why are there so many people in this thread who feel like it's their God-given right to get penny guides? Whatever happened to the old adage "you get more flies with honey"? Seriously, it's like some of you feel like you are championing some sort of noble cause and trying to make a difference in the world. Penny guides are awesome, but if I am not able to score some at a store, then life goes on. I wish you people put this much effort into feeding the hungry or saving the environment.

No matter how successful you are at demanding, forcing or coercing someone to sell you penny guides, there will never be a TV movie made about you and your relentless persistence at the elusive penny guides. I promise....

Really though, you should count your blessings everytime you walk out the store with one (or a stack of) pennied guide(s) because so much can get in your way of getting them. Remember, they don't have to sell any of us the guides.

Thanks goodness there are some people on this board with some common sense, decency, and respect for other people just doing their job. I find the best method when going up to a register with penny guides is to smile, address the person by their nametag and ask them 'How are you today?' You know like they're a person.

I find that starting off ANY conversation with a CSR using "How are you?" is a good thing to do. The CSR's are actually nice if you treat them like human beings. There are some CSR's who will go out of your way if you just be nice.

And to everyone who complains about getting denied, please shut up. Most of the time you are getting denied the purchase because you're being an asshole. On Tuesday when I went to go pick up penny guides at a BB I was denied purchasing multiples of any guide, but the manager gladly let me take one of each that I had on me. The only reason he let me take them was because I wasn't acting like an asshole. What he says is what is going to happen in the end. If he doesn't want to sell the guides, he doesn't have to. I'm more than 100% sure that he isn't going to get in trouble for denying someone a purchase of penny guides.

If you want a short version of that then it'll go a little something like this. Be nice, agree with the manager if you have any problems and DON'T argue.

You might not be the only CAG that visits that certain store so don't fuck it up for all of us.

Yep, same thing happened to me a couple of weeks back when I found Super Mario Galaxies hardcover and Final Fantasy Tactics. I price-checked them, then rushed back to grab multiples of each. The manager intercepted me and told me he could only sell me one of each and the rest had to be pulled. I didn't gripe for a second, I thanked him and happily went on my way.

I love hunting for these things, but every score big and small is a ridiculous bargain, so I never question it if a manager would rather not let me walk away with multiples, or even with any product. You never know.

I popped into Best Buy again today to check the newest drop. Pretty much empty. Not sure if someone else got there or they tossed the guides. I did find a Bioshock that was hidden, along with two Mass Effect LE's from the last drop that were hidden.

Ok, quick question...when the guides are supposed to be field destoyed.....when do they finally go down to a penny?

haha...I just don't feel that a store's employees need to lie to you. Trust me this is the same gamecrazy that's sold me stuff as brand new only to come home and find that shit is missing out of "sealed" cases. The only store where the employees are playing the games and not asking if they can help you. Its the worst GC I've ever been at. At least at other stores I haven't been lied to and I really don't see the issue with the employee just saying that they are going to get destroyed.
Besides, that's a store I would've never gotten penny guides from in the first place and nobody else either, but now that I know the guy (I didn't just stand there and continually tried to catch him in a lie, I talked with him for a while) he's going to hook me up with all kinds of guides that are going to get "destroyed".

wow dude....bringing up the feeding the hungry part and all....you have no idea what the hell I do, but saying stuff like that makes you really look like a good guy. I'm sure you must be busy at the shelters and all so I'll try to keep this short.

Anyway, I don't demand guides at all, I was there to pick up a Street Fighter Fight Pad and happened to check guides like I always do. I simply asked what the deal was with penny guides at his store. He could've simply said we have to destroy them, but I caught him in a lie twice and I let him know that I knew better. He was surprised more than anything on how I knew this stuff. Aside from that we still talked about a few other things before he offered to throw them out/field destroy them whenever I was around which is pretty awesome. He's not violating the rules cause he's doing his job and I'm just taking what he's tossing. It couldn't have been a cooler thing of him to do. I even renewed my MVP card. I still don't have to justify myself, its just a shit load of people here get all offended and shit when others get guides or even hoard them. It does ruin it for others, but hoarders don't care about how others feel, so crying about it won't help and just annoys the crap out of people.

Making a movie? What the hell are you talking about? Its not fame we're after its guides.

I'm not really sure. The manager and I were going through the ringing up the register process and each of them were full priced for some odd reason. However, he was thinking that maybe they should be priced a penny by the 14th, which is next week. However, I told him that I would stop by today or tomorrow and ask them to ring it up again and see what happens then. Hopefully, they would be rung up as a penny. And yes, when they do ring up as a penny, they are to be field destroyed. It said that right in their memo.

well, i can understand why a sales person would lie...... i mean look at it from their point of view... having to tell a customer they can not have something and they have to destroy it... Wouldnt you rather hear that they are "all gone" or " sent back"? i know we are cursed with the burden of knowledge.... and we KNOW what happens.... but that is no reason to be a jerk :(
in my adventures i had found that being nice and making small talk with the sales person can go a long way! if its gamestop maybe throw them a pre-order..... and if they are rude to you .... go back next week and get ur money back!

cheers

There are either 2 versions or the drop/raise is not universal. I checked today @ GameStop and it rang up at 17.99 or 19.99. The guy thinks I'm nuts, because I have checked it 3 times. He usually gives me a guide if it scans at a penny and he gave me a Lost Odyssey guide in this visit.

Well it isn't like I was straight up calling him a liar, I just said I knew better and I did talk to the guy for a while so in no way did he think I was a jerk or he wouldn't hook me up with the guides he's gotta destroy. I've been to this GC and although they've in my opinion been one of the worst GCs I've been to, they have only a few store associates worth talking to because the others are too tied up on playing games or goofing off. In over 20 visits to the store it was the first time I was actually asked if I needed anything but that was cause two of the nice employees were working there today.

I would have gone back to BB but the same door lady was still there autographing receipts. *sigh*

Didn't want to test my luck and have them catch on but what she said last time was "Wow, that's a good deal."

Grr... I hate pushing post while I still had thoughts to write. Tales of Vesperia at GS was still $17.99. Oh well.

Just got back from my local bb and picked up the following:
Spore LE x2
Battlefield Bad Company x2
World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade
Silent Hill Homecoming x2
Soul Calibur IV x3
WarioLand: Shake It!
Star Wars Clone Wars: Lightsaber Duel/Jedi Alliance x2
Infinite Undiscovery x3
Madden NFL 09 LE x3

There were still tons of Madden 09 LE guides (at least 20) and at least 10 Battlefield Bad Company...they also had the Warhammer Online bundle, also ~10 of those which I didn't get since I forgot about them.

I was surprised they still had so many! Guess this store doesn't pull the guides. Yay!

well I'm meeting with my local GC manager in about five minutes regarding guides lulz.

he also wants to know how to get more people in his store? apparently i can work magic? blargh. i just wanna come out of there with some guides.
There's actually two BB's around here and I had a confrontation with the media manager at both in the past, with the one I just found out I was blackballed at being a more recent argument(the big drop where half of the guides went back up).

I did apologize to the manager, though I did keep saying that 'if they're not on the shelf, I wouldn't try for them for a cent'.

Either way though, I have more than enough trade fodde for years I think, so I'm good.

But thanks for the offer nonetheless, though since I've been going out of town alot lately, I've been able to hit out of the way BB stores for some.
