Picked up my Shadowrun guide from the BB I did the in-store pickup order. CS rep commented about it being a penny and remarked that it was a good deal.

Today at GameStop, the Naruto Ultimate Ninja guide dropped. Something else did too, but I forgot to grab the list when I was there. It wasn't anything amazing.

I thought Naruto Ultimate Ninja was part of an earler drop? It wasn't Naruto Ultimate Ninja 2 was it?

Yeah, I doubt it too. I thought NBA street homecourt guide dropped pretty fast though.

I saw Sims 2 Pets pennied at an EB today. I had no interest in it and the guy had already ripped the cover off. But it was a penny.

*slaps forehead*

I meant Uzumaki Chronicles. I always get those two confused when talking about them.

Returned to that Best Buy, snagged ShadowRun (x5, all sealed in shrinkwrap), Prima Pokemon Mystery Dungeon (x2), and Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2 (x4)...as well as a XenoSaga II marked down to $15

Did they have UPCs on the shrinkwrap over the original UPC?
It's not Shimmering Isles, it's Shivering Isles. No typo here, move along, nothing to see.
Aw yeah, check out the big brain on the girl in MENSA. #-o

Every time I checked the site, I could have sworn it was SHIMERING.

And I'll be updating the wiki this weekend.
I'm sorry -- actually, those Shadowrun guides are stickered over.
Curious indeed. I had stickered-over ones at my BB, and they rang up $20 (this was the day of the drop).

Wait, did I miss something? I thought Pokemon Mystery Dungeon and GRAW 2 did not get pennied but were instead flagged to be field destroyed. Were these .01?

I second that with a big WTF? Guess I'll have to check this out in store...

Don't feel bad, I thought it was "Elder Scrolls: Quivering Mound of Love Pudding."

I confirmed that the Lego Star Wars guides are still $4.99 at GS ( picked up a few). I also noticed that the Lego SW II guides were marked $4.99. I don't know if it was a mistake or not; I didnt scan them.
Today at GameStop, the Naruto Ultimate Ninja guide dropped. Something else did too, but I forgot to grab the list when I was there. It wasn't anything amazing.
I found out what the other one was.

Sims 2, The Pets.

Wooooooo.

A second BB had GRAW2 pennied, in addition to Prey and God of War II; all going on my TL. At that one, apparently, they were all intentionally left out, because the employees all knew about them and were curious as to how I knew "their secret;" at least three mentioed them being a penny without even scanning them.

I can now confirm GRAW 2 is a penny. Stopped by Best Buy this afternoon and picked up a couple of copies of that and a non-shrink wrapped God of War 2 that also rang up as a penny. They must have dropped the price of GRAW sometime during the week because I checked it Monday and it was a no-go.

Huh. I went to my formerly magical BB and they had pulled them all. Maybe they still drop to a penny a couple of days after the order to destroy.

On the day of the drop i went and picked up two online orders...had no probs. One bb had bunches of shadowrun, rogue g, and graw2 but all rang up at 14.99 or 19.99. Today i went and picked up my last online order at a 3rd bb and saw a couple God of War 2 guides, scanned them and they came up at 17.99 or some crap....i feel that penny guides are gonna die on us...so sad. At least Gamestop and such has been dropping them to $5 which i feel is a fair price so i grabbed Gears of War and Spidey 3 the other day!
Got those guides today for 1 cent each at BB
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Prima
GRAW 2
Shadowrun with sticker
Thanks for the info. So I'm assuming Rogue Galaxy is a penny now in store as well, if it can be found?

I went out of town yesterday with a friend and hit a mall I normally get guides at.

First GS store in the mall I hit had few guides out, so I had them check the following:

Ultimate Gameshark Codes 2007(not sure which is pennied, but the one I checked rang up $9.99)

Sims 2: Pets

Needless to say, I grabbed Sims 2 Pets and left UGSC 07. Then, I headed to the second GS store in the mall, which usually has a huge rack of guides in the back of the store. This is where I picked up numerous Tales Of Legendia guides the last time I went out of state on a day trip.

So, I tried my luck there anyway. I waited till there was only ONE clerk left in the store(the rest went on breaks or went home). The huge guide rack was long gone, replaced by the all too familiar small metal rack of guides that I see in MANY GS stores anymore.

So, not seeing any guides that pennied out, I jokingly ask in a roundabout way if they have the Art of WOW Book. I describe it. The clerk reaches under the register to a little shelf and pulls out a copy of it. He scans it, then scans it again, then says 'I hope you have the money to pay for this, it's a penny'. Then, he goes on about how he hopes there's another copy cause he would've snagged it.

I felt kinda bad since he said he hoped the other copy that was showing in stock was in the back(and I hope so too cause it was the SAME clerk who let me grab numerous penny guides last time there), but like the game show Press Your Luck, I did just that.

I asked for a Tales Of The Abyss guide next. He checks the lil shelf again, then checks the back. No go on the TOTA guide, but I'm happy since I got the ONLY item I wanted from the recent drop. So, with that in hand, I went back to the FYE in the same mall and grabbed some PS2 games with my credit for 30% off(store is liquidating all their games). I snagged both Capcom Classics Collections for PS2 with $30 something in credit and was out the door.

Sorry for the long post....but I felt like the whole day yesterday was finally worthwhile when I snagged that art book AND I kinda felt like BRAGGING. :p

Sims 2: Pets IS up for trade on my TL, usual shelf wear and what not, the Art of World Of Warcraft book IS NOT!!!

I don't recall seeing this in the thread, but looks like Independant Playstation Magazine (PSM) ran another piece on penny guides.

From the October 2007 Issue.

Letters section

"Penny Guide Woes

'I went to GameStop and asked to see the pennied out game guides as detailed in the August issue of PSM. I was informed that the guides can't be sold, they are thrown out and if an employee sells one and gets busted, they get fired.': Brian Lucas, Charlotte, NC

editor Teresa: 'Sucks. It seems that right after our intrepid reporter gathered this morsel of value that the practice was stopped. Unsold books are usually returned to the book publishers in that business, but this clearly means a bunch of products, probably heading to recycling (where they may be worth more than the penny the store could sell them for). Hey, EB/Gamestop, why not put them on sale for $1? You'd still clear the back catalog of stock, right?'

"

I wish PSM would just shut up about it.

I saw that too and was about to post it. I really just wanna rip up PSM everytime I see one now (not that I didn't before, but you get my point).

Well, one one hand, that reader letter works well for us. It is now clearly stated that they can't be sold, many of their readers will probably no bother with them any more. Less requests will probably mean GS and everyone else will put up less resistance to the guides.... maybe?

Hopefully. Thats the way I'm looking at it.

I think that this will start driving EB/GS to make sure they're following through with disposing of penny guides, as it's been explained in PSM that they dispose of them.

If they don't, I'm sure some numbnuts will point out the letter in this month's PSM. :bomb:

I was thinking that too.

Me: I'd like to purchase this guide.
GS Employee: *Scans* Sorry, cant sell this to you, havent you read the PSM article, I could get fired!

That's when you have to be sly... like a cooper.

Clerk: *Scans* Sorry, cant sell this to you, havent you read the PSM article, I could get fired!
Me: Well, don't sell it to me, just hand it over! *cheesy smile and a thumbs up*
Clerk: ....no.
Me: You sure....? *pulls out a shiny nickel and pushes it across the counter*
Clerk: *trades the guide for the shiny nickel*

See!? It can happen! Of course then they'd be nickel guides... but whatever.

I'd prefer to get the guide at a penny or free, but the recent guide sales at EB/GS like GOW for $5 is right at my break price for getting most guides.

Like I said, I'd prefer them at a penny but I'd pick up most guides at $5. Never a sports title guide, but GOW totally.

LOL Someone took that article word for word, didn't they? I mean, cmon, ANY smart retail employee who actually gives a crap about their job and the company WON'T let something be sold at such a low price or given away.

Of course, this is why I usually find the most lackadaisical employee in any BB or GS I go to, since if they're daydreaming on company time they probably don't give a shit if they sell something that cheap.

Funny part is, that original article that was in PSM was hilarious to point out to the local employees, who already ask me when I come in 'what pennied?'. They just laughed and hoped that no one in corporate read the article, no biggie.

A little bit of a timeline on BB.

A news letter went out Friday Aug 17 that a task notice would go out Monday to pull a list of guides. Monday that said action item went out.

On Thursday August 23, the prices were dropped to 01.

So apparently BB's new tactic is to try to notify employees on Monday with the hopes that all guides will be pulled by the time they go to .01 later in the week.

Of course those guides that some of you gave a new home in appliances might not get pulled on time :)

That's what I was hoping for. At least this gives us an opportunity at the expense of lazy BB stores. There was a crackdown in the Richmond area maybe a year-and-a-half ago, but stores went lax with pulling guides by the next drop. That will hopefully happen again.

Too late for Rogue Galaxy, but maybe not too late for Bioshock

Did Rogue Galaxy penny out? I remember having one scanned at $9.99-16.99 or something.

I also picked up that Narutard guide and Sims Pets 2 today at GS in the mall; I usually hang on to a copy of each guide I pick up for my personal collection, regarldess of whether or not I have the game yet, but I see myself going out of my way to never own or play either of those.
Don't feel bad, I thought it was "Elder Scrolls: Quivering Mound of Love Pudding."
 Don't you pick on me, Richard. I'm sensitive.

Plus, I've already chastised myself for this rather embarrasing error.

Yea, the from the BB memo:
Dropped Today

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced warfighter 2 (8288729)
Shadowrun (8380815)
Shadowrun (8367787)
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon (8030043)
Rogue Galaxy (8258477)
Codes & Cheats 2007 (8246962)
Stalker Shadow of Chernobyl (8297489)
I've yet to see any of these guides since the memo to pull, let alone Rogue Galaxy, but it would make sense that it fell to .01 with the others (Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, GRAW 2, and the like).

I can confirm Rogue Galaxy indeed dropped to .01
I got one today at a BB where I'd stashed it.
I also scanned the following but no dice:
Viva Pinata
Nintendogs
Pokemon Ranger -Prima
Super Paper Mario -Prima
Mario Party 8 -Prima

I scored a few guides at one central Virginia BB (location withheld to protect the innocent):

Stalker (x3)
GRAW 2
God of War 2

I left a Stalker semi-hidden if any Richmond CAGer is interested. Of course I didn't find the guide I wanted most: Rogue Galaxy. The fact that there were a few guides left, though, makes me think a CAGer, not a BB employee, got to them first. I'm in the process of renovating my trade list to reflect the finds.

Hull Street right? :D I scored a few decent ones months ago during the last penny drop. The one here on Midlothian Turnpike tosses them all religiously. I guess I goofed not stopping by Hull Street this time. They made such a fuss during my first penny guide score, that I though they would pull them all in the future.

Nope. West Broad, surprisingly enough. I also visited Midlo (none this time, but I got a few last drop) and Glen Allen (nada) today. Hull and Colonial Heights were a bust a couple of days ago. It doesn't surprise me that Hull gave you a hard time. They almost denied me way back when they first opened.

That GoW 2 guide has been steadily shedding its plastic covering the last couple of times I've been in there. Someone unsuccessfully tried to rip off the new UPC sticker. I don't know why they stopped, perhaps heat from loss prevention. It was fully unsheathed this time, though.

Nice unexpected store at a far-off GS today when I went to track down my copy of Nocturne for $48:

Tales of the Abyss (x2)
Valkyrie Profile 2
Resident Evil Outbreak File ##2 !!!
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (PS2, $1)
Syphon Filter 2 ($1)
Star Trek Legacy (x2)
Red Steel (x2)
Pokemon Ranger
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon

I don't recall whether or not I had found the NP versions of the Pokemon guides earlier, but the Trek and Red Steel ones are going up for trade. TotA and VP2 I'm considering, I might not even list because I don't want to trade them unless I get amazing offers -- I'd rather sit on them since they're already somewhat hard to find. REOF2, TMNT, and SF2 are all games I have that I'm now quite glad to have the guides to pair with.

But yes, Nocturne. Ahahaha. Now I just need to find the guide for it...

Man, you guys who find guides at EB/Gamestop are so lucky! The stores around here are really diligent about dumping them once they drop.

Lucky single finds here and there, though for the most part, squat on my end.

I know! I don't know how you people always seem to have such luck!!! In my entire time browsing this thread(s) I've only ever been able to score like 2 of the drops at Gamestop/EB.

I know you kids can't be stashing guides in those stores. Am I just extremely unlucky? Or are all the gamestops outside my state manned by troglodites?
