Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread Seven and a Half.

First store had a stack at the front door; rummaging on the racks, I found a single LCS and a couple VCS. I had both scanned, turns out Liberty City Stories is pennied, Vice City is still full price. The employee gave me the guide; I asked about the ones up front, and he told me those were free, so I grabbed 'em - there weren't more than a handful there.

The second store; no dice. The first mall store had nothing, so I went to the other shop in the mall, store #4. I found another Naruto and Sims 2 Pets on the shelves, then went up to the counter and ased about Castlevania. he said they had been pennied and were being thrown out, but he'd get me one if I wanted. I immediately offered to give them all a good home, and he came out with a nice stack of them that had been sitting in a box in the back.

Store #1:
Pirates of the Carribean At World's End x2
Hour of Victory x2
Call of Duty 3
GTA: Liberty City Stories

Store #2:
Hour of Victory x2
Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII
Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surver
Call of Duty 3 x2
Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin x2
The Sims 2: Pets
Naruto: Uzumaki Chronicles x2
Shining Force EXA

Duplicates are up for trade, so is the Sims and possibly Fantastic Four. I'm only letting go of my spare PoR for a really good offer...

There are another couple of stores in my area I need to hit, but ATTN Long Island CAGS: There's still a Sims 2 Pets and a Naruto at the Smith Haven Mall GameStop.

So I've noticed over the last 15 pages or so that this thread has devolved into a person's helpful post of new drops at a store, followed by 50 posts from people giving their subsequent store visit experience, as well as thinly veiled attempts at putting their trade list here instead of the Guide Clearinghouse thread.

Can I make an appeal to Gwen that we keep this thread talking about guide deals and only guide deals (i.e. this guide dropped to $x.xx at store xxxx)?

The reason I mention it is not to be difficult, but I find myself having to dig back post after post of "I went into BB today and they didn't have the penny guides, so after lunch I went to another BB and I was able to score the penny guide", etc. etc. just to find a post of what dropped and where. Respectfully, I don't think many people, if any, care about what you found, bought and what happened at a store, unless it is about a guide drop not previously mentioned. All it does it makes this thread unnecssesarily longer. If that was a rarity, I wouldn't even bring it up, but it's the majority of posts on most pages.

Perhaps we could create a Penny Guide Social Thread where people can discuss their store experiences and other items (i.e. thinly veiled trade list updates that aren't direcly related to posting a guide deal)?? Just a thought.....

I think that was tried and eventually it devolved back into the mangled mess you see now. I don't even try for them locally anymore, so I don't even have to worry bout posting, but I do kind of wonder as to why such newer ones drop, yet certain older guides are stuck forever at reg price.

For example:

@GS/EB/etc:

God Of War(non dvd version)
Kingdom Hearts

@BB:

Animal Crossing: Wild World
New Super Mario
Nintendogs

One store chain has pennied these out a LONG time ago, while the other has them languishing in inventory at MANY stores. Much like the newer PC guides which dropped @ BB and GS within months of the game releasing:

Mage Knight Apocalypse
any others I may have forgotten about

I'm still puzzled as to how I found copies of Rome Total War Barbarian Invasion, SWG: Total Experience and R6: Lockdown at an out of my area GS on Sunday, when they dropped probably a year or MORE ago, yet the rest of the guide shelf was up to date.
Well, someone sure is snarky tonight.
Sorry, if it sounds snarky, it's merely because tone doesn't come across well in written format. I promise that I'm trying to be as diplomatic as possible in my post. I'm sure most of the regular posters in this thread are like me and find this the only, or one of the only threads they regularly check. I lurk in this thread literally every day. I'm just making a suggestion that I feel is for the best for this thread. If people want to talk about what happened in a store, then they should have that outlet; I just feel it should be in a different thread, is all...

I think a lot of people intend to post relevant information, but don't keep up with what guides have already been mentioned and they end up duplicating information. I don't mind personal score posts too much, as actual guide drops are pretty rare and the list still gets updated. Plus Isometimes learn relevant information in the "junk" posts that I otherwise would not have picked up on.

Might sound good in theory, but in reality I don't think it'll work. Besides, isn't the guide wiki updated with just relevant penny guide info? I would think you could just check that.

In most cases, duplicating information = confirming information. There have been many instances where someone has reported a drop only to find that other stores were still charging full price, with people across the country having various hits and misses.

i think the current formant is fine, epically if you can check often. I mean with the recent GS drop it is only 3-4 pages. Also you never know where a post will have some useful info
In most cases, duplicating information = confirming information. There have been many instances where someone has reported a drop only to find that other stores were still charging full price, with people across the country having various hits and misses.
You mean like me having the Scarface guide price checked at at least 3-5 different Gamestops in as many different areas as I could and them all coming up at full price. Yet people here reported that it had dropped @ GS at least a month or so ago.

Last time I checked, it was STILL full price, unlike what people reported.

Also, people were reporting GRAW2 and Shadowrun coming up full price; but they were pennied in my area. They were also reporting Rogue Galaxy as pennied, but none of the ones I had checked came up as such.

When Cheapy overhauls the site with the new update, each user should have a "There U Go" rating. Every time someone posts meaningless info in a thread like this, the post can be classified by a mod (or other members) as a "There U Go" post. That person's "There U Go" rating would then go up by one.

I guess this off topic post of mine would count as +1 on my "There U Go" rating. To make this official, someone needs to quote my post and say "There U Go!"

Well those are the result of a sticker over the UPC like i said a while ago. Same deal with the GoW 2 guide. If they ring up at full price there is a sticker over the barcode that if removed would make guide $.91

I think this thread is fine the way it is. I like reading most posts that don't explicitly give drop information. Besides it's not that painful to keep up to date.

I agree . . . this is a discussion thread. When big drops occur, they become THE news for awhile and its easy to get the list.

THIS IS NOT THE TRADE THREAD

I like reading about everyone's experience trying to get the darn guides. Celebrate w/ those who get them, commiserate w/ those who don't....makes it feel more like a community.

Also...the earlier we get news of a drop, the better. I could (sort of) understand wanting to get there before your other local CAGs (or more likely the FW/SDers)...but a CAG who's on the other side of the country is not going to swipe your guides. ;) Not that I'm complaining (OK, much)...but I think there would have been a better chance of more CAGs getting the guides if we'd gotten earlier notice.

I see what you're saying, but that is why I suggested a social thread for those discussions. I wouldn't suggest to eliminate those discussions, but just to put them in a different place that isn't expressly for guide drop information.

Definitely agree with your second point.

Thanks..

But the social discussions keep the whole thing afloat . . . remove these and the "real" thread drops like a rock.

We could have the thread stickied and only post news of new drops and keep a social thread elsewhere (Deal Discussion?) but wouldn't that be duplicating the effort of the wiki list?
But the social discussions keep the whole thing afloat . . . remove these and the "real" thread drops like a rock.
Agree with schultzed. There was like a two month period just recently with no drop information that would have buried the penny drop thread if social discussion was prohibited.

Besides, Gwen does an AWESOME :applause: job keeping the first page up to date on drop info. Really anyone who just wants to keep up with drop info only should just check the first page and be good. Anyone who wants to keep up on guide drop discussions can peruse like normal.

If it's not broken, don't fix it. I don't think there is a prob with the thread the way it works now.

Gwen does an awesome job keeping everything up-to-date, no question. It's just where I live, time is of the essence, and I literally have to go out as soon as I see a post about penny drops, else I miss out, so if I wait for the first page/wiki to be updated, then I usually miss out. It has happened several times in the past.

As far as this thread dying if there were no discussions, etc. allowed, that's fine. The penny guide social thread, or whatever, would stay at the top of the list, and this thread wouldn't "die", it would just be updated when a new guide or guides drop.
We could try using this thread for discussions.
Damn it! Sonofabitch... OK, neocisco goes on my untrusted linker list...

got lucky today @ 2 gamestops. got 2 gow le, shining force exa, castlevania por, & gta vice city. 2nd gs got lucky wit rogue galaxy and mint condition gow le. too bad he didn't give me the sealed one. I noticed too that they just pulled these guides off the racks they were either behind the registers or the counter. I guess you could say they are actually doing what they are supposed to. grab the guides this week before they throw them out

So true. Besides, I personally like the social discussions, if only because know which stores Slim Gatsby ransacked. I kid, I kid.

How did you get lucky with Rogue? I though tthey were still $10 at GS.

And for a while, CAGs in Jersey/NY and southern PA knew which stores I was hitting when I was hoarding back in the day. :whistle2:X I can't count the times I hit Springfield, PA's Best Buy or their Gamestop brand stores while I was en route to Atlantic City.

And Middletown, NY was a huge gold mine for me for a while, which I'd hit whenever I was taking a friend to Monticello for the slot parlor(20 miles away on Route 17).

And Paramus, NJ was one of my major scoring spots for a while too, but not anymore. I hit that area while going out to see Sicko at the mall there and not much of anything left.

I'd hit my own area more, but I've been almost completely blackballed from getting guides here. Of course, I guess that's what happens when you ONLY come into the GS stores when there's a drop and immediately hit the guide racks and clear half of them and walk out laughing at their ineptitude with 30-40 guides per store.

As for why I was hitting NY/NJ and southern PA, I initially thought ALL guides retain value perpetually and was gonna use them to start an Ebay biz. Stupid idea, I tell ya.
How did you get lucky with Rogue? I though tthey were still $10 at GS.
oh it was? lol then i got a freebie, freebie. LOL! i just handed it to the guy and was like "i saw these at the counter, i wanna buy em" and he was like "oh, they were all penn-- (goes to his boss)" then shrugs. a second later he took the sealed copy of GOW LE, gave me the mint opened one with RG "here you go". i left like a bandit. i wasnt aware it was $10 i swear.

Actually, a lot of stores in our region have been on top of throwing them out. I found two FF: RotSS and a single Shadow Hearts at the two Montauk Highay stores, and nothing but a single Pirates and a Star Trek Legacy at all three of the South Shore Mall stores.

I had a GoWII LE guide scanned; came up full price.

I left a Virtua Fighter 5, a bunch of Vice City Stories (not sure if they were the pennied ones or not) and a few others if I recall correctly at one of the Montauk Highway stores (the one by Kohls/Kaybee).

It could be worse. I mean, someone out there is gonna be looking for one of those guides out there... Like how I got Just Cause a few days ago, so depending on if I think I'll need the guide or not, I may send a PM your way. :p
Nahhh. You just lost your time invested. Stupid would have been paying full price for them.
True and since I went in with a friend on the potential 'Ebay windfall', it was their time and gas and car, so I lost maybe $5 total. Then again, said friend is also an ex gf who I think still has a thing for me, so she was willing to bend over backwards for me at that time.

I may keep 1-3 copies of my multi copy guides and am definitely keeping the ones I have only one copy of each for a personal collection.

And, if I could only count all the guides I've bought at full price and later on sold to EB for $1 each. Silent Hill Prima Version

Too bad she didn't want to bend over forward for ya ;)

and on topic : Gow II LE guide.

I may stop over at the Kohl's store (call it the South Port one, since that's the center it in.... and the other is at the Majestic center. Having 2 stores within like 2 minutes of each other can get confusing) and see if they still have those 2. Or at least the VF5 one because I'm definitely gonna pick up a copy when i get a PS3.

LOL Mind you, it was MY wonderful idea to try and sell guides on Ebay, so I should've been the one ponying up the cash for gas at least. :whistle2:X But, we won't get into that.....and well.....she's still into me, but I like her 'as a friend only'.

Pics or GTFO

on a related note, looks like the Oblivion guide is getting another print. There will be a 496 page Oblivion GOTY guide. Hope this means the existing Oblivion and Shivering Isles guide will be pennied soon.

It's "Frickin' huge." I saw it today at EB. Surprisingly lightweight though. Cheap ass paper I guess. It was shrinkwrapped too.

Kind of like the Godfather guide which has had numerous printings already too, not that that helps me to grab a newer version around here for a cent.

actually that one only got 2 version. The PS2/Xbox version and one that also has PSP and Xbox 360.

I really thought there were more, but I believe you are right. I just always expected a PS3/Wii updated version to come out too at some time.
