Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread Seven and a Half.

That's an interesting mix of old and new guides. I'm tempted to try one tomorrow. Does anyone know how easy or hard getting penny guides at GC tends to be?
 
Thanks for the tipoff! I remember seeing FFVII at a GC about 20-30 minutes away when I was on a Classic Plastic Quest, and being all WTF? $17 for a guide for a 10 year old game?

I'll have to check that one out again...

If you are going to the one down the street from the Smith haven mall, tell me what they have. I wouldn't mine getting a few of the guides on that list.
 
I think the one in Lindenhurst has a bunch of strategy guides behind the counter.. I'm pretty sure this is where I saw either a FFVII or a FFVIII (or both).
 
I know last time an employee there I was cool with showed me a huge stack of guides that had to be destroyed and said he'd take them himself, but the manager said they were to be trashed -- before I even knew about penny guides, he had just brought the topic up on his own.

But, management has changed since, and now one of my best friends works there, which is the only reason I even have a remote hope of grabbing anything.

I'll let you know if they actually left anything on the shelves...

Thank you so much ctice44 for the list. Was able to pick up a bunch of penny guides

Started to drive there and waited for the light to turn and one of those people that walks to your car for some charity thing. Felt bad, cuz it was hot, so I put in a dollar and got a lollipop. Parked, went into GC and found only Suikoden Tactics on the rack. One guide is better than nothing so I thought and they the guy helping me says we have a bunch of pennied guides here and I hit the jackpot, picked up:
Grandia 3, MGS PO, Romancing Saga, SF Alpha Anthology Suikoden Tactics, Virtua Fighter 5, Xenosaga 2, Yakuza adn the guy the helping me dug out a Splinter Cell Double Agent guide and a egm and just told me to take it.

Helped the guy out by signing up a MVP card since he was so helpful
The guides look great also. Sorry for the little story, but after getting shot down by eb/gs stores and scoring at GC I am just so happy.GC is my new favorite store now.

That is one thing I've noticed about GC. When they're cool enough to hook you up w/ penny guides they'll usually have guides that dropped from several months ago in the back.
 
Thanks for the GC list, but my store is still run by jerks. I must be 0/7 there over the years and they always try to sell me penny guides at oddball prices (or as they call it, a 'discount if I buy an MVP!'.

I have very good luck at any EB/GS in my area, though, when .01 guides are in-stock.
 
I was able to get only a couple of guides at that GC, and I had to renew my MVP. But it helped the numbers of my friend and my fave store, so its all good:

Well here it goes im going to totally ask a newb question here but in the listings on the first page when you click the link for drops by date the first store " Gamespot" is that a typo meaning "Gamestop?

Lindenhurst was cleaned out. According to the staff, they threw everything away yesterday. :cry:

Well the Gamestop near me didn't have any, so I went to Borders. They had both of the FFVII and FFVIII guides marked at 15.99

I tried to get the manager to pricematch a penny, but he said there was no way that it was that cheap. I told him to call over to Gamestop and ask them what the price was in their system :lol:

He didn't budge :(


I will gladly pay a few $ via paypal if anyone picks up FFVII for me :)
 
got FFVIII guide today (new copy not for trade, but i do have a used one up for trade) along with few other guides. I dont even need to buy anything.

I was never into the FF series, but once had FFIX and it's guide from an EB 3-4 for 1 special, but took them both back unopened the next day. Only one I regret is the Prima Silent Hill guide and maybe Duke Nukem Time To Kill(which I got back now thanks to a CAG).

I finally scored at a local GS, though only the Fantastic Four guide, which is up for trade(but not on the TL as of yet). I'm half tempted to plug in my cam and snap a pic of me with the guide in front of me with my middle fingers showing and send it to the District Manager for GS in this area, since I really irked him when I was pointing out guides which were on the shelves 2 months past the time they dropped and he's a total dickhead.:roll:

I wish I had a cam phone when he was flinging the guides I was pointing out as pennied at the one local store, poor bastard looked like he was gonna have a coronary any second.:lol:

But, I don't wanna ruin everyone elses chances and get myself truly blackballed from the local GS stores:roll: , since the dump store still has some PS1 games I wanna grab but am still undecided on. Although.....I could.....nah.....better not, since it might be considered harassment by communications, but it'd be worth it just to make him wonder which store gave me the damned thing and make him think they told me bout them(which he thought when he spotted me at the aforementioned store).:lol:

You never know till you try actually, as I PM'd a copy of God Of War II's pennied version guide(without those UPC stickers on the back cover)at a Circuit City just down the hill from the BB I snagged the GOW II guide at.

I shoulda grabbed them all though, since the next time I tried it(with the CC receipt only), I was shot down by an ASSistant manager who all but accused me of thievery for trying to PM a penny guide, saying he'd 'never PM such a ridiculous price'.

I found a few guides today and the guy would not sell them at a penny yet he went to manual over ride and attempted to put the total the guide originally costed.... forget that I had over $100 in guides
 
Well, the manager at my local GS who was cool with letting me get guides that were left on the floor was on vacation, not back until next week, didnt really want to confront the employees, it was only a Hour of Victory guide, so no big lost.

I think the managers are the problem because last night I was able to go to a different location and get some with no issues from the employee working..
 
i live 2 minutes on bike from the levittown gs, by lowes, today i went and it was empty as always they have EVERYTHING i want,gc broadband adapter,dmc2 mint,time crisis 3, blah blah blah. so i got wow for a friend so we can play on a private server together. i swung around back to find there dumpster overflowing with newly added swag. i scored 1 phantom hour glass 1 halo 3 and cod 4 tall 6 foot poster. 1 tetris starwars budle thing. some god of war inserts two officail xbox magizines, august and september 07.

and madden 07 guide :D

Meh, the only reason the manger is cool with me is because a friend of mine use to work there and I got to know the employees there a bit. Of course, now theres a set of new employees, so Im not sure how they'll react to penny guides. But since it was only a guide that I didnt really need or want, I didnt care much. If it had been something else that I had more interest in, then I might have attempted it.

While Blockbuster doesn't "penny out" guides, I did save a couple Gears of War amd Superman Returns guides from being field destroyed today. :D Both are for trade.

edit: I work there. Chances of a non-employee getting them w/o paying full price are

And you'd be suprised at how many stores have the FFVII guide. They shipped out a fresh batch of FF7 guides a month or two ago. I did manage to get a FFVIII guide that I found in the back. Hooray!
 
got very lucky again today.. got x6 gears of war le, c:por, ff x-2, ff vii dirge of cerebus, and x7 shining force exa. I was gonna get xenosaga iii but I didn't know if it was pennied plus it as buried under 30 or so guides I didn't wanna hold the line. I did preorder castlevania dracula x just to give em a little bit of business.
 
I stumbled across a new GameStop in my travels, and although they didn't have any guides left, I noticed a few Penny Arcade collections next to the register.

I made out with

For $0.03.

If anyone wants my spare vol. 2, I'd swap it straight-up for a 3 or 4.

I like the format of the OP with the basics, the second and third posts being updates. But depending on how busy I am, I fall waaaaay behind in updating the wiki and consequently, the related second and third posts.

Updating the wiki would be a million times easier if someone would PM me with updated lists so I don't have to cull through this thread every so often to find what's a new drop where and when and what's just chatter. You know... like the very handsome kdunn did back in post 276?
