Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread X(Ten)

Not open for further replies.
First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Furthermore, I would like to thank our Wiki editors HeatDolphin and Rocko for updating the Wiki. Great job.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you. Please, whenever possible, use RED font to make the drop info stand out. Thanks again.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinavere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

Common Guide Drop Related Questions(FAQ):

FAQ - If you are new (or a vet with a few questions) look here SECOND! (After reading the above!)

Q: What Are Penny Guides?
A: Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them.

Q: Do all guides from all stores drop at the same time?
A: No. While most chains have nationwide drops within their own store (as in every BB will have the same drops coast to coast), not every different chain drops at the same time (what drops at BB is NOT necessarily dropped at GS). When in doubt, check post TWO for drop info.

Q: I found a penny guide and a clerk denied me! I'ma report 'em!
A: Whoa, hold your horses there, pardner! First of all, not a question. Second, just because something is on the shelf, the clerk does NOT have to sell you that item. Most stores are PRIVATE property and as such can deny you just about anything they want - including a sale. The best advice is to not be rude, not be arrogant, and just try hard to get them to have pity on you.

Q: Why don't the clerks want to sell me their penny guides? Aren't they just throwing them away?
A: As stated above, the stores are ordered by the publisher to trash the guides, and are then given credit for those guides. If they don't do this, the publisher won't give them the credit - it's like losing a sale. On the employee level, selling a penny guide can sometimes get them in trouble (or even fired!) I know it seems silly, but this is their job we're talking about! Respect the man (or woman) behind the counter and you'll get a lot more guides than otherwise!

Q: Should I just ask if the store has penny guides then?
A: No, since that denotes that you have some insider information as to the runnings of these businesses.

Q: What if the clerk wants to know how I know so much about guide drops?
A: If asked where you got your info about guides that pennied, simply say either 'the internet' or 'a friend of mine told me they're on clearance'.

Q: But clerks will know what a penny guide is, right? I can talk to them like anyone else here...
A: Never use the word pennied to ANY store clerks unless you have built up a good rapport with them. Even then, it may seem a little fishy if you know more about their shop than they do.

Q: Are guides labeled as a penny on the shelf?

A: Sometimes. Most times, no. GS seems to label everything that gets a price drop, so often times guides will be stickered. But even so, they most likely won't sell them to you. A sticker does not mean 'have to sell'.

Q: I tried to buy a guide that this thread said was pennied and it didn't ring up as such! What gives?
A: Either 1) Our source was wrong (this rarely happens and is usually verified a FEW times within maybe an hour of posting), or 2) The clerk changed the price. It's usually number 2.

Q: What's the easiest way to get penny guides? This sounds like TONS of work!
A: Best Buy is probably the best place to get guides, followed by GameStop, GameCrazy, Toys R Us and then Blockbuster. From what I've seen though, probably 95% of guides that people get are snagged at BB - the rest come from the other stores. But it never hurts to try!

Q: Has there been a drop recently?
A: If you are asking this question you didn't fully understand the OP - go back and read it once more. When a drop happens, it will be posted, and then placed in the second post - trust us.

Q: How do you guys know so much about penny guides?
A: We sometimes have inside sources with the information from the stores themselves; other times, fellow CAGS just like you or me simply take suspected guides to the register and ask them to ring them up, to check their prices. Feel free to do this yourself, and help give back to the community by telling us what you find! However, DON'T ask "Has anyone checked XXX lately?", unless you are in the right thread (discussion area).

Thanks to GrilledWitOnions for creating the above FAQ, which should eliminate the need for such questions popping up in the thread from this point on out.

Star Ocean did seem to be the rarest of this lot. Found 1 each at 2/3 stores. And none in minty condition.

Speaking of which judging by current stock I am thinking Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days and Dissidia guides are going to be really hard to find later. Sucks.
Since people were wondering: The media manager at my store told me that the Fallout 3 CE was audited before it dropped in order to prevent sales at a penny.

I wonder why they chose that particular guide. My store had about 30 FO3 CE before they were pulled yet they still had 60 of the regular guides this morning.
Did many people find Tomb Raider: UW? I didn't see it at 2 stores, and forget to look for it at a third.
I think that was one that was pulled a couple weeks back before this drop along with the FO3CE.

Rocko was asking about this earlier, but if someone here has gotten the F3 guides for a penny and could please post a pic or two of the front/spine, I'd appreciate it. Both versions if you got them.

I'll probably head back tomorrow and try to snag some more, but wanted confirmation on the F3 guides first.

Thanks everyone!

First time I've ever been succesful hunting penny guides. Got everything I was looking for besides Fallout 3 CE and Tomb Raider. Overall, I'm extremely pleased.

Thanks Guys!

Check post 2098. I believe Shrike posted what you are looking for. The coever with a sole face on the front is the CE pennied I believe. The regular one that pennied is the non-GotY one.

Well, I was on the way back from the Niles, OH BB from picking up some guides and a deer got pwned by my car. The bad part is that my car has some collateral damage on it. :(

I've had a couple near collisions with deer before, but luckily I was on slower side roads and not a major highway or I probably wouldn't have been going slow enough to stop in time.

But the one time I was coming home from an auto auction in NY state following a semi and well....let's just say I've never seen anything be hit by a big truck till then. It was both cool and disgusting at the same time.

At least the poor deer didn't suffer like I've seen when smaller vehicles hit them.

Back on topic, I got out of my election worker training class WAYYYYY late, so it was like 20 to 9 before I got out, which caused me to be unable to check my one local BB for guides.

Oh well...not like I wanted anything from this drop or could get anything from my local stores anyway.

My supervisor has to take them out of the system first then I can get all of them for free.

Getting
Infamous
Street Fighter 4

I wonder why they don't audit all guides. They sell other CE for penny and have no problem. Odd.

Too bad BB either sent them all back or is about to eBay them. I don't even feel like looking for the recent guides because of the hype that was FO3 CE.

I don't understand how it works at all... I'm thinking that it might have been a test to see if auditing them would help prevent penny sales. Fable II, Tomb Raider: UW, and F3 CE were all audited.

I came up with a stack of like 10 guides, and the girl called the manager over. I had never been stopped buying them at a BB before, even with a manager, but this one said there was a glitch in the system and they needed to be pulled. However, I played nice and he let me buy 1 LBP, 1 Star Ocean, and 1 Zelda. Funny thing is, ive gotten from that location before with no problem. Ill prolly go back tomorrow and hope a different manager is working to get the rest.

Unfortunately when a manager says they need to be pulled they usually are pulled before long, so you probably won't find them tomorrow. At least the manager let you get a few for a penny though. The jackwads at my local two BB stores would say 'mark them up to normal price and then sell them to him' and I'd just walk out without anything.

That stunt(mark them up) is what they tried with me today.

On the bright side of splattering the deer, it gave me a creative new title for my trade thread.(I took out a deer for guides, what have you done?)

Almost happened to me tonight. They let me take what I had and I heard the guy at the counter say that the guy working in video games needs to pull the guides. Problem is, that guy is me. Hehehe.

That story had a nice twist at the end that I didn't see coming. Kudos M. Night Shamalon:applause:

Ordered online for pickups at 3 different BBs.
Went to the first one, and found out that they actually had in stock everything I want and more.
Scored one of each of most of the new drops, including LBP.
Not greedy, so didn't get multiples.

I've been unlucky with picking up penny guides at my local BBs (SF Bay Area) =(

San Carlos: Girl cashier was going to sell them to me, but manager came over and denied the sale.
Union City: All the pennied guides were pulled except the 1 lone LBP, which the cashier let me buy for 1 cent.
Milpitas: Manager doesn't allow its employees to sell the penny guides.

I'm still searching for Star Ocean:the Last Hope. If anyone has an extra, then please PM me.

Has any SF Bay Area CAGs been able to buy these penny guides?

I was lucky enough to find a sole Fallout 3 CE (still sealed). I just bought the game, is that guide have the same content as the other Fallout 3 penny guide?

Oh crap, sorry for being a jerk. I read your pm this morning but when I went to look in RSS I got distracted and forgot all about it till I just read your post.

GTAIV still has yet to penny. Strange but not unheard of.

Killzone 2
Call of Duty: World at War
Star Ocean
Street Fighter 4
Fossil Fighters
Infamous
Zelda: TTP
Mortal Kombat vs DS Universe
Fallout 3
Metroid Triology
Gear of War 2

Got everything I wanted, had a great day. Didn't know COD:WOW dropped though. The only thing I couldn't get was FO3: CE, but there was only one in the local area a week ago, so didn't expect it to still be there. Very happy. Plus, I'll try to PM FO3 GOTY edition tomorrow at a local BB to try to get it for $40. I've been wanting it for awhile, and that's a great deal.

They have been on the BB website for over 12 hours now (what it is like 15 now?). It is shocking that it took this long for it to make it to SD. BB is pretty much advertising it this time around.

How much did you spend in gas money to get around?

This is what happened to me today. I started putting a few guides in my cart at the El Segundo BB when one of the workers came over and told me that they couldn't sell guides for a penny anymore, only if you bought the actual game that the guide was for. I told him that I'd never had any problems buying guides for a penny before at that store and that I never had to buy any games just to get guides, and he said they just started implementing this policy a couple of weeks ago after the employees started to get guides for themselves for pennies. I went to the customer service desk to PM Fallout 3 GOTY and tried to see if I could get the guy there to sell me the guides anyway. Then as he started to ring up some of the guides, another employee came up and told me the same thing the first worker said, that I had to buy the game to get the guide for a penny. I asked her if it was only this BB that was doing this or if it was all BBs and she said they received a letter from corporate to start enforcing this policy so it was probably all Best Buys. So, I ended up just getting one penny Fallout 3 guide with the GOTY game. And when I got to the door to leave, the guy there even looked inside my bag to make sure I bought the right game to get the guide.

I then went to the Hawthorne BB and when I got there I saw one of the guys pulling all the penny guides from the guides section. I saw some of the pennied out guides still on the shelves in the games section so I quickly grabbed 3 of them and went to check out. The cashier was the same guy who turned me down on the PoP hardcovers last time (he called over a manager who tried to sell them to me for $5 each, then $2 each). Well, he turned me down again as expected, and said he couldn't sell them to me for a penny each, but I could get them for a buck each. So I ended up just getting the Star Ocean guide for 99 cents. Sadly, looks like this deal is close to dead in the CA South Bay area, they're really cracking down on people buying guides for pennies now. Lame.

Couldn't you just return the game ?

I just ordered 20 Fallout 3 guides from the Parma, OH BB so we shall see if they have them.

I'm doing it as a test to see if they don't have them, then will BB carry through on what it says in the emails if they don't have said item in stock.(that they will ship your order to you for free from the warehouse)

Imagine the look of suprise on my dad's face when UPS shows up at his house with a 10 ton box of FO3 guides. :p

1 of those BB is near my work. The other 2 BBs I pass on my way home from work. I was able to get a $40 Fallout3 GOTY at the last BB so the gas was worth it. I guess-haha.

It seems it is super tough getting penny guides in the SF Bay Area. Actually, I'd be willing to pay a few dollars for each guide.

Just wait a month or two. Typically they crack down for a month or two until the next notice from corporate comes down and then they ignore the previous notices.
