Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread X(Ten)

Status
Not open for further replies.
First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Furthermore, I would like to thank our Wiki editors HeatDolphin and Rocko for updating the Wiki. Great job.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you. Please, whenever possible, use RED font to make the drop info stand out. Thanks again.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinavere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

Common Guide Drop Related Questions(FAQ):

FAQ - If you are new (or a vet with a few questions) look here SECOND! (After reading the above!)

Q: What Are Penny Guides?
A: Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them.

Q: Do all guides from all stores drop at the same time?
A: No. While most chains have nationwide drops within their own store (as in every BB will have the same drops coast to coast), not every different chain drops at the same time (what drops at BB is NOT necessarily dropped at GS). When in doubt, check post TWO for drop info.

Q: I found a penny guide and a clerk denied me! I'ma report 'em!
A: Whoa, hold your horses there, pardner! First of all, not a question. Second, just because something is on the shelf, the clerk does NOT have to sell you that item. Most stores are PRIVATE property and as such can deny you just about anything they want - including a sale. The best advice is to not be rude, not be arrogant, and just try hard to get them to have pity on you.

Q: Why don't the clerks want to sell me their penny guides? Aren't they just throwing them away?
A: As stated above, the stores are ordered by the publisher to trash the guides, and are then given credit for those guides. If they don't do this, the publisher won't give them the credit - it's like losing a sale. On the employee level, selling a penny guide can sometimes get them in trouble (or even fired!) I know it seems silly, but this is their job we're talking about! Respect the man (or woman) behind the counter and you'll get a lot more guides than otherwise!

Q: Should I just ask if the store has penny guides then?
A: No, since that denotes that you have some insider information as to the runnings of these businesses.

Q: What if the clerk wants to know how I know so much about guide drops?
A: If asked where you got your info about guides that pennied, simply say either 'the internet' or 'a friend of mine told me they're on clearance'.

Q: But clerks will know what a penny guide is, right? I can talk to them like anyone else here...
A: Never use the word pennied to ANY store clerks unless you have built up a good rapport with them. Even then, it may seem a little fishy if you know more about their shop than they do.

Q: Are guides labeled as a penny on the shelf?

A: Sometimes. Most times, no. GS seems to label everything that gets a price drop, so often times guides will be stickered. But even so, they most likely won't sell them to you. A sticker does not mean 'have to sell'.

Q: I tried to buy a guide that this thread said was pennied and it didn't ring up as such! What gives?
A: Either 1) Our source was wrong (this rarely happens and is usually verified a FEW times within maybe an hour of posting), or 2) The clerk changed the price. It's usually number 2.

Q: What's the easiest way to get penny guides? This sounds like TONS of work!
A: Best Buy is probably the best place to get guides, followed by GameStop, GameCrazy, Toys R Us and then Blockbuster. From what I've seen though, probably 95% of guides that people get are snagged at BB - the rest come from the other stores. But it never hurts to try!

Q: Has there been a drop recently?
A: If you are asking this question you didn't fully understand the OP - go back and read it once more. When a drop happens, it will be posted, and then placed in the second post - trust us.

Q: How do you guys know so much about penny guides?
A: We sometimes have inside sources with the information from the stores themselves; other times, fellow CAGS just like you or me simply take suspected guides to the register and ask them to ring them up, to check their prices. Feel free to do this yourself, and help give back to the community by telling us what you find! However, DON'T ask "Has anyone checked XXX lately?", unless you are in the right thread (discussion area).

Thanks to GrilledWitOnions for creating the above FAQ, which should eliminate the need for such questions popping up in the thread from this point on out.
Fallout 3 hardcover (non GOTY) is still pennied at BB. I picked up one today.
Thanks to slowdive21 for confirming this (although I don't know what you meant by "still" pennied: from what I've read, it didn't penny until today).

And apologies to Frosty for doubting your initial report of the drop: the way you put it, I interpreted that it hadn't actually pennied.

And kudos to whatever blueshirt left a sealed FO3 CE (non-GOTY) on the shelf. Audit, schmaudit. (And I bought a DVD with it, which I wouldn't have bought otherwise.)
I was able to pick up everything except for FO3 CE but I doubt there are many of those still out there. After returning from BB, I saw that CoD:WaW had also been pennied. I went back to pick it up and decided to get some extra guides to trade.

When the clerk scanned the first guide, he immediately called the manager. The manager told me that they should've been pulled and that she couldn't sell them to me. She then decided that she could sell them to me at $1 each. I chose a COD:WAW guide and paid the dollar. As I was leaving, she called the guy in the game department and told him to pull all the penny guides. This store had atleast 60 FO3, 30 GoW2 and 20 SO:TLH guide. They still had KZ2, Wolverine and Godfather 2 from previous drops.

I hope this doesn't ruin things for me in the future. I usually have no problem when I go in the mornings. I'll stop by tommorrow and see if they actually pulled the guides.
hawthorne right? HAHAHA you fail!
I then went to the Hawthorne BB and when I got there I saw one of the guys pulling all the penny guides from the guides section. I saw some of the pennied out guides still on the shelves in the games section so I quickly grabbed 3 of them and went to check out. The cashier was the same guy who turned me down on the PoP hardcovers last time (he called over a manager who tried to sell them to me for $5 each, then $2 each). Well, he turned me down again as expected, and said he couldn't sell them to me for a penny each, but I could get them for a buck each. So I ended up just getting the Star Ocean guide for 99 cents. Sadly, looks like this deal is close to dead in the CA South Bay area, they're really cracking down on people buying guides for pennies now. Lame.
haha seriously guys we know whats going on... you're better off trying torrance or something
This is what happened to me today. I started putting a few guides in my cart at the El Segundo BB when one of the workers came over and told me that they couldn't sell guides for a penny anymore, only if you bought the actual game that the guide was for. I told him that I'd never had any problems buying guides for a penny before at that store and that I never had to buy any games just to get guides, and he said they just started implementing this policy a couple of weeks ago after the employees started to get guides for themselves for pennies. I went to the customer service desk to PM Fallout 3 GOTY and tried to see if I could get the guy there to sell me the guides anyway. Then as he started to ring up some of the guides, another employee came up and told me the same thing the first worker said, that I had to buy the game to get the guide for a penny. I asked her if it was only this BB that was doing this or if it was all BBs and she said they received a letter from corporate to start enforcing this policy so it was probably all Best Buys. So, I ended up just getting one penny Fallout 3 guide with the GOTY game. And when I got to the door to leave, the guy there even looked inside my bag to make sure I bought the right game to get the guide.

I then went to the Hawthorne BB and when I got there I saw one of the guys pulling all the penny guides from the guides section. I saw some of the pennied out guides still on the shelves in the games section so I quickly grabbed 3 of them and went to check out.
How many guides did you try to get at SC?
I think about 7-8 guides. Basically, 1 copy of the ones that dropped today and were actually available there at SC, which has tons of pennied guides. I saw rows and rows of Fallout3 non CE there.

Ah, a stack of pennied guides. That explains the management attention, the refusal to sell, and the scarcity of any of today's drop - including any FO3 non-GOTY - by closing.

Moderation, common sense, whatever you want to call it, people. Learn it. Know it. Live it.

As always, everyone over-reacts to any refusal to sell. It's a STORE decision. There ain't a damn thing coming down from corporate on this. Picked up 1 or 2 (for any game I own, so I can keep one guide pristine and use the other) of each guide from this drop (except FO3 CE) between 2 stores. Once clerk knew me and was talking about how cool it is that I come in and get these and the new cashier at the other store talked at length about how cool it was that the guides were a penny. No manager calls, no dirty look, no problem. I've never had a problem getting multiple guides at ANY Best Buy I've gone to...

I must be lucky, because I usually have at least 5 and sometimes as many as 15 guides when I go to checkout, and I have not once had problems at Best Buy. Gamestop is hit-or-miss, BB is pretty much always good to me.

Epic drop, thanks to the usual suspects for tips, Frosty for confirming, and IATCG for maintaining the list. Really psyched to get a copy of Star Ocean.

. Take your job seriously much?

You say you guys know what is going on yet you still neglected to pull the guides until after I showed up at 4:30 pm. If you want to see how much I failed, check my trade list in the guides section.

Anyways, what's up with the dick attitude?

Argh, dammit. Figures that there's a major drop while I'm on my vacation entertaining an especially lovely woman. Is it worth leaving the hotel for this? Maybe.

Please tell me that's a trick question. My answer would be "no".

If you guys couldn't get guides, I pretty much picket up at least 2 copies of almost every single guide. Please check my trade list in the trade forum if i can help any of you guys.

What is your problem?

Ooooooh. You guys at the Hawthorne store are sooooo awesome for DOING YOUR JOBS?

Good work, junior detective.

Is there anyway to search online for Guides that dont show up on the website. Want to see if my local one had Call of Duty which I forgot but its not on the site

Moderation and 'testing the waters' is what stoppped me from having an epic haul back in March with that messed up BB guide drop. I took 3-5 guides up to test out, then went to my car and by the time I came back in the media manager had ordered the rest pulled and gave me a snotty remark when I went to grab more.

So, I'm all for discretion if it's a store you've never picked guides from before, but this one was one I've picked up multiples from and they go in spurts.

But as of late they've been doing their jobs well. I haven't found a single one since the drop that included Saint's Row 2.
Anyone order them from the website and get confirmation that they shipped?
my order did not ship yet. I'm a little worried since the guides are now off the site supposedly thanks to SD. I hope the huge amount of orders from them didn't kill the orders even though it's not a price mistake
Anyone order them from the website and get confirmation that they shipped?
Not shipping yet, but not canceled either.

What makes me laugh is that even though the guides that were clearly marked a penny are off the site now, some of the guides from one of the prior drops are up there still with their MSRP prices listed.

EDIT: Sorry about the omission of Little Big Planet. The second and third posts are finally 100% updated(I believe).

I was refused a bunch of guides last night at the Costa Mesa BB. I was pissed as just earlier in this thread another lucky CAG had listed his haul from the same store.

I told the sales supervisor to stop making customers do his job. If he didn't want to sell them he should make sure they are not on the floor. Of course he argued how the drop had only occurred today, yada yada, so I pointed out that guides from 2 months ago were still on the shelf and that he was FOS. And I also pointed out that had the item been 100$, I'm sure he would have allowed the sale to go through.

If this happens again, I swear I'm going to talk to the manager just to be a prick about it.

Im a bit of a wild card when it comes to getting guides. Ive been doing BB penny guides monthly for many years. Only 1 time did I get stopped. I brought up a cart of like 25 guides and was not allowed to buy them. This was a year ago. Even with the bad experience I kept going back each month. Employees change all the time, even if they dont I just go when the kids are cashing out. So of the 50+ times Ive hit a BB for guides, only 1 time I was halted.

I pretty much act with reckless abandon, not advisable but Ive been doing this long enough where I dont even care. Example yesterday I hit all 4 of my BB in order and quickly. I immediately grabbed a cart upon entering the store, cleaned out everything from the rack and immediately brought it to the cashier. Each store had around 30-40 guides.(a few of which I traded to local cagers who pmed me) So all of my actions, including walking fast were probably suspicious. I also went at around 11am when there are 5-10 employees standing around doing nothing, even more likely to be watching me. 3 of the 4 stores I had a group of 3-4 employees standing around me while I cashed out. They all act amazed and some even asked me if they could have one. Customer here and there also asked. Like I said ive been doing this so long that Im no longer about being coy or being cute with employees or customers. I pretty much tell the person ringing me out straight up that "I do it monthly, they always ring up as a penny, lets get this over with..."

You could say I should act with more caution but Ive been hitting the same stores for years and the same managers/employees have been there and never care, never grab them for themselves so I dont even think twice. Its sucks that you (Iam) have had that "blacklisting" of sorts but Id just keep going back without worry, maybe a different set of employees. I should also note my BBs pull guides asap mid way in the day so If i dont go in the morning Im screwed, although if I do get there in time its no problem getting them. Yesterday was funny though cause I found 1 copy of Godfather 2 I must have missed last month with a nice yellow 1 cent sticker on it. I laughed.
Parma, Ohio store seems to be out of guides.
Confirmed. They sent back the 20 FO3 guides I ordered this morning.

At least I got a personal call from the BB Manager there to let me know that they no longer had the stuff in my order.(the 20 FO3 guides)

I guess it's time to call BB customer service and get them to ship those to me. :D

The way people have been talking on this site and SD about this drop im almost sure they got cleaned out buy a single CAG or SD... Im was suprised to go into bestbuy to get my two guides I ordered for in store pick up to see a bunch more on the shelf so it seems as though the stores were not all on the ball this time around..

Thats ok the extreme hoarding on guides mentioned here recently will just re-alert Managers to be on top of the guide drops for now on...

Hey another Derek!

But I dont care because A. If dont get them then nobody does since my stores pull fast B. I put an invitation on CAG earlier that any local Cagers can have any the guides I got for free. So basically I did the leg work for them (anyone who would have wanted some locally). Already handed out 20 guides to local caggers. Dont see how I can get the flame.

Now some people on SD are saying they are having their orders canceled both for shipping and pickup. I really hope it's because they sold out online or the guides weren't available in their store.

I've tried that too(the walking quick, going early in the am, etc) and lately they've been pulling them before the store even opens, so even if we get advance notice I'm still SOL.

Mind you, 90% of the ones that have dropped lately are ones I don't need, so I would just be getting them for trading purposes, but it kinda sucks that my area is a dead zone anymore for this.

Maybe you think you're a saint, but I'm sure you charge shipping to those you trade with, so had the guide been on the shelf it would have cost them 1c. You're just a selfish prick!!

Did you even read what he said? He was giving them to local CAGs... not shipping them.

I certainly read the part where he takes a shopping cart and clears out the store. And what do you think is happening, do you think he's having a CAG open house where you show up to grab a guide or two. I doubt it, he's just a greedy SOB who's justifying his actions by pretending to be CAG friendly.

CAG friendly folk take what they need, not everything they can grab.

Well, in this case I support him. There was apparently a pull order sent down from Galactic Command(hope the creator of that phrase doesn't mind me using it) because all the stores I checked today had pulled them this morning.

So grab them while you can... because they are pulling them rapidly at least for this drop.

Just because they are being pulled at one store, doesn't mean it's happening everywhere. My local Best Buy had penny guides for months. So, unless you're physically taking them out of the hands of the employees who are throwing them in the dumpster, then I'm happy I live in an area where people don't hoard.

I'm just saying that the manager at one store said that a recall order was issued from corporate this morning for the penny guides from this drop.

My local best buy had all the guides still there except a few and the one I wanted(SF4)... I think someone hoarded all of the SF4 guides and RE5 limited guides in the San Jose area. Because the best buys there have tons of the FO3 guides, GOW2 guides so I know the stores don't pull them but there is a empty marker for where the RE5 limited guide and the SF4 guides.

this is kinda funny, but make sure to double check for the fallout guide, my store actually had one buried behind all the new goty editions, and to someone who doesnt know any better it would look more or less identical (non-ce) so i assume whoever stocked it was probably not a gamer

RE5 LE dropped last month, so they have been long gone in most places.

Lots of stores had metric tons of FO3 regular guides.

i know it dropped last month. That's why I bring it up as a comparison. That there is a empty marker last month where all the RE4 limited were last month when I went to look a day late. And this month theres a empty marker for all the SF4 guide were.

Of course nothing is definitive. They may have been all bought online or something.
