Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread X(Ten)

First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Furthermore, I would like to thank our Wiki editors HeatDolphin and Rocko for updating the Wiki. Great job.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you. Please, whenever possible, use RED font to make the drop info stand out. Thanks again.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinavere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

Common Guide Drop Related Questions(FAQ):

FAQ - If you are new (or a vet with a few questions) look here SECOND! (After reading the above!)

Q: What Are Penny Guides?
A: Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them.

Q: Do all guides from all stores drop at the same time?
A: No. While most chains have nationwide drops within their own store (as in every BB will have the same drops coast to coast), not every different chain drops at the same time (what drops at BB is NOT necessarily dropped at GS). When in doubt, check post TWO for drop info.

Q: I found a penny guide and a clerk denied me! I'ma report 'em!
A: Whoa, hold your horses there, pardner! First of all, not a question. Second, just because something is on the shelf, the clerk does NOT have to sell you that item. Most stores are PRIVATE property and as such can deny you just about anything they want - including a sale. The best advice is to not be rude, not be arrogant, and just try hard to get them to have pity on you.

Q: Why don't the clerks want to sell me their penny guides? Aren't they just throwing them away?
A: As stated above, the stores are ordered by the publisher to trash the guides, and are then given credit for those guides. If they don't do this, the publisher won't give them the credit - it's like losing a sale. On the employee level, selling a penny guide can sometimes get them in trouble (or even fired!) I know it seems silly, but this is their job we're talking about! Respect the man (or woman) behind the counter and you'll get a lot more guides than otherwise!

Q: Should I just ask if the store has penny guides then?
A: No, since that denotes that you have some insider information as to the runnings of these businesses.

Q: What if the clerk wants to know how I know so much about guide drops?
A: If asked where you got your info about guides that pennied, simply say either 'the internet' or 'a friend of mine told me they're on clearance'.

Q: But clerks will know what a penny guide is, right? I can talk to them like anyone else here...
A: Never use the word pennied to ANY store clerks unless you have built up a good rapport with them. Even then, it may seem a little fishy if you know more about their shop than they do.

Q: Are guides labeled as a penny on the shelf?

A: Sometimes. Most times, no. GS seems to label everything that gets a price drop, so often times guides will be stickered. But even so, they most likely won't sell them to you. A sticker does not mean 'have to sell'.

Q: I tried to buy a guide that this thread said was pennied and it didn't ring up as such! What gives?
A: Either 1) Our source was wrong (this rarely happens and is usually verified a FEW times within maybe an hour of posting), or 2) The clerk changed the price. It's usually number 2.

Q: What's the easiest way to get penny guides? This sounds like TONS of work!
A: Best Buy is probably the best place to get guides, followed by GameStop, GameCrazy, Toys R Us and then Blockbuster. From what I've seen though, probably 95% of guides that people get are snagged at BB - the rest come from the other stores. But it never hurts to try!

Q: Has there been a drop recently?
A: If you are asking this question you didn't fully understand the OP - go back and read it once more. When a drop happens, it will be posted, and then placed in the second post - trust us.

Q: How do you guys know so much about penny guides?
A: We sometimes have inside sources with the information from the stores themselves; other times, fellow CAGS just like you or me simply take suspected guides to the register and ask them to ring them up, to check their prices. Feel free to do this yourself, and help give back to the community by telling us what you find! However, DON'T ask "Has anyone checked XXX lately?", unless you are in the right thread (discussion area).

Thanks to GrilledWitOnions for creating the above FAQ, which should eliminate the need for such questions popping up in the thread from this point on out.
I hear ya. That's why I qualified it with "if a CAG got it", meaning a true CAG. In some cases I've started just sending PM's instead of posting specific deals.
Amen, that's what I started doing for a while now, and exclusively after CAG kidu copied the CAG community Target clearance game list over to slickdeals...
Not necessarily, unfortunately. There are a ridiculous amount of lurkers and hoarders on here now that are nothing more than leaches.
Amen to that. This is why I changed my location to Witness Protection Housing a while back, plus it's why I mention 'my local ' when I say where I got these deals from.

Only if I think I won't be back to a store will I mention some locations, but I'll usually PM the locations where I saw stuff to other local or semi-local CAGs. Although, I know of at least one semi local CAG to me(friend from on here, no less) who Ebays alot of their stuff and has shown me pictures of massive stacks of guides and games, including some stuff I've been looking for forever.

Unfortunately, they go by Ebay prices and values when I've asked for some stuff, which I refuse to pay when I know what they paid in the first place.

I love it when hoarders bitch about other hoarders.
I love it when hoarders bitch about other hoarders.
About the only time I may really hoard anymore is when it's a hardcover guide that was originally priced @ $29.99 or when it's for a popular game.

Of course, there have been rare occasions where I'll have a dry spell when going to grab some guides where I may grab every last one. But those are few and far between anymore.

But I will say that unlike the hoarder I mentioned, I don't hit NY/NJ and big parts of PA(anymore).
The lake forest, CA bestbuy had a bunch of guides. But the douche cashier said they have to send it back so they can't sell it.
Ok, I have to ask. Was the cashier that denied you a doofy looking guy that had his ears sticking out? Not trying to be mean, well maybe a little, but I've never been denied at that store until this drop by the doofy-ear guy.
I'm hoping you actually delt with the same guy I did, and the rest of the cashiers remain clueless about the whole penny drops thing.
I love it when hoarders bitch about other hoarders.
I'll admit. I'm a hoarder at times still with the guides, but the games? NO WAY!!! The only time I've grabbed all copies of any game was back when CC still had Dynasty Warriors Gundam for $15 and they were getting $33-36 each at Blockbuster.

Otherwise, that's just too much cash to be wasting on stuff that'll collect dust until it sells.

Now, with the guides, at least with BB, If you don't grab everything you want and try to leave guides for others: they are gone. I bought 2 MG4: LE's and left 2 of there. The next day, all pennied out guides left from the three drops were gone.

I've tried it both ways at times and after a while BB starts to pull all guides that have pennied and they get strict on allowing the sale of them even. However, for a while they're very lax and they allow you to get anything you want at any time.

But after going through dry spells, that's when I go overboard with the guides.

Checked out my local BB and all the mags were normal or semi-clearanced priced. GoW2 was 9.99, while Resistance 2 and MGS4 were still 19.99. I looked at the back and on all the guides one of the two barcodes had been marked through with a black marker. Does this mean anything significant? I will keep an eye on this store because I really want some of these guides. Thanks for the heads up

Did you have the guides checked at a scanner? Resistance 2 is pennied, but the other two if softcover are not. One of the barcodes is marked through or covered with a sticker, because it forces the cashier to scan the correct barcode.

You do realize that the Limited Edition(hardcover) versions of the Gears Of War and Metal Gear Solid 4 guides dropped, right?

If you had the normal editions price checked, then it's no wonder they came up those prices.

Also, I've seen the barcode thing before, though they usually have a blank yellow sticker over the other barcode.

Personally, I don't even know why they use two barcodes, since one never rings up in the system anyway.

GoW and MGS4 were both hard cover special editions. Resistence was a soft cover. I had the person working scan them right in front of me (I could even seen the computer screen as he checked). GoW came up 9.99 and MGS4 and Resistance came up 19.99.

Was this at a register or one of the kiosk things in the media department?

If it was one of the registers, I believe there IS a way in those to mark back up the guides. Perhaps the cashier pressed some buttons to do price overrides to their pre-pennying prices?

I have seen it done(to me) and the managers have told employees to 'mark them back to cover price' before to the other employees and all it takes is a couple button presses typically.

I would definitely go back when a different clerk is working and try for those again, unless they pulled them after you said you didn't want them.

I(and many other CAGs) tend to go to female cashiers all the time and with a smile and a little prepping for the prices they'll come up(saying 'I heard these were on clearance')they'll usually check you out without so much as flinching many times.

thats exactly what i do, a little bit of charm goes a long ways lol, anyways as far as drops today i will be going in about a half hour on my lunch to check.

What I usually do is find the cutest female cashier, walk up to them, say "I heard these were on clearance," and lick my eyebrows.

I actually got denied at a best buy near me for the first time in the 4 years I've been doing this. I was a little shocked. But then I went to another nearby BB and got all the guides I wanted. One of those was actually stickered at .01.

I'm gonna try and head to another further off BB this afternoon and see if I can score any of the LE guides that I missed from this drop and maybe a couple of the other more popular ones for tradebait.

Same thing happened to me with this drop. First denial ever at Best Buy!

This typically works for me as well, though I skip the eyebrow licking part. ;)

"I think these are on clearance, they should be pretty cheap." Then when they ring up the cashier at least has been prepared for a lower price and doesn't freak out.
The BB on S. Lindbergh in South County St. Louis is LOADED with guides. Numerous SR2, SSBB, R2, plus lots of others, only thing they didn't seem to have was MGS4 LE.

I picked up the two guides I couldn't get in trades, so I'm good. This was right at 9PM tonight, so unless they clean them out after close tonight or before open tomorrow, it should be a target-rich environment for STL CAGs.
I was unable to go here until Saturday night and they were pretty much cleaned out, except for 2 copies of the Gears LE guide, which I bought. This store seems to be clearing out guides, as the only ones left are being presented where the games are at 20% off.

I need to run over there tonight to do a PM and an exchange, so I'll take a look in the media area and see what you're talking about.

Picked up virtually everything I wanted this weekend from various BB's... Certain guides like SSB and MGS4 were only found at one store...

Bah humbug....the BestBuys around Austin always clear out the guides before I can pick up any pennied ones and the local Gamestops just don't allow me to ever buy theirs.

My BB isn't even bothering selling them for a penny anymore, they are now free - you just take them.

I picked up:
Grand Theft Auto:Chinatown Wars
Grand Theft Auto:Lost & The Damned
Madworld
Pokemon Ranger: SOA
Saints Row 2
Super Mario Galaxy(Premiere Edition)

passed on:
Haze
Madden 09
My Sims Kingdom
Resistance 2

I ended up picking up 4 more guides at a further off BB yesterday and they still had a bunch of some of the other ones when I was leaving.

I picked up:

Afro Samurai x1
Saints Row 2 x3

Other than those, they had 3 or so Spyro guides, 1 Resistance 2, 1 Endwar, 2-3 Haze and a mish mash of others.

However, they didn't have ANY of the LE guides in stock, though I only wanted those for collection purposes. I was told by the clerk working media that they just shipped out all of their Fallout 3 LE's about a week earlier to sell on the website or whatever.

If anyone on here is in the Poconos in PA, I think you already know which NEW Best Buy(bout a year old) that I'm talking about.
Did Fallout 3 LE penny?
Only at GameStop. Look for black helicopters and the Fallout 3 CE on the Best Buy Outlet eBay store.

No, Fallout 3 LE was not pennied. There's still a stack sitting at my store at 34.99.

I was in the store today and picked up a guide. I had it price checked (knew it was .01) and then I went to the front with that guide and a dvd box set. The bitch up front manually adjusted that guide to 19.99 (tagged at 14.99) after rescanning it FOUR times. I finally told her, after she manually adjusted it that I don't want it if it wasn't the price it was price checked at. She got all pissy and said "who in the hell price checked it for you at a penny" ... I told her the guy who scanned it since it rings up for .01. She got on the microphone and started bitching about it, said that it's not supposed to go for .01 but the manager said to allow it since it was price checked at that.... If it hadn't been price checked, I wouldnt have gotten it I guess. The cashier could have just let it go, instead of being a bitch though.
I wouldnt have gotten it I guess. The cashier could have just let it go, instead of being a bitch though.
It's probably not a good idea to let something tagged at $15 go for 1 cent without making sure it's okay first. Job security.
I was just there. They told me nothing dropped this week.
I've been travelling so I haven't updated my lists in a few weeks. I almost wonder if this might have been part of a previous drop. Hard to verify it now.
I get guides from gs since I get along with the manager. I sure nothing dropped.
I'm not arguing that nothing dropped this week. I'm speculating that this particular guide may have dropped 1 or 2 weeks ago along with one of the other drops, and nobody noticed.

Sorry, was typing from my phone so my short comments may have come across as argumentive. I get guides pretty regular and I haven't got it in the last few mos so it may be pennied out next week or two but I'm sure it hasn't yet. If you want it, probably a good idea to stake out one that has it now and sit patiently for next Tues or Wed.

No problem and no offense. I'll keep my eyes open. I picked up one at Best Buy anyways, but maybe for someone who needs it, or has a chance to check it next time they're in, might be helpful.

Went back in there today and the guides were finally dropped....bad thing is the only one left was a lone copy of the GoW2 LSE. Good thing this was the one I was wanting the most. I guess my BB is just slacking on pennying their guides out. I was hoping to pick up on the MGS4 guide to but im happy coming across anything useful for a penny. Thanks again for the heads up and quick responses guys.

Metal Gear Solid 4 LE
Gears Of War 2 LE

Saw both of these today if I pick them up is it a definite that they will scan at a penny if I price check them?

Both your name and your question gave me a little chuckle. Anyhow, they most likely will, but you can always take 1 copy and ask a nice sales rep to price check it. Maybe even hide the other copies just in case they decide to takes yours since they should be pulled. Then go back and get hidden ones once confirmed. 95% sure that most BB have pennied their guides by now, but there are some around me that have older guides that should be pennied and are not. YMMV

Always try first, ask questions later. You might have just cost yourself those guides - they might not be there when you get back. If they don't ring up pennied, just say that you thought they were on sale, and you don't really want them. No reason to be shy or feel embarrassed.

I checked my Best Buy the other day and they didn't have any of them. I think they are tossing them now. Not a big deal, since I didn't need any from the most recent drop.

Someone discovered my favorite Best Buy store.:( I have bought guides many times only have been turned down a few times there it was a real gold mine. Two months ago I went first thing in the morning to check some guides took them to the register no drop as I was bringing the guides back I noticed a guy bringing back what looked to be half the guides that were on the shelf I saw him he did not see me. I was unable to make it to this store on the first day for the most recent drop when I went the following day the shelves had been cleaned out no SSB, Mario kart, Chinatown Wars absolutely nothing sucks for me.

I must be only person who buys these guides from my stores. Went back to my store and snagged another 25 guides that were still sitting there since i'll be donating to my club for gameroom prizes for the convention we run each year.

Mostly Saints Row 2
Resistance 2
Mario Kart
Mad world
Smash Brothers

Still funny that there are MORE guides still sitting on the shelves i didnt snag

That DOES suck. That's actually how I first met one of my other fellow local CAG's, was that I was getting ready to grab some guides from a out of state Best Buy and they actually work nearby at another store.

I think the other local CAG's know I'm pretty much the 'guide guy' around here and they just leave the stores alone, but I also think it's that the stores are pulling 90-95% of the time anymore.

That's what makes it so hard to find any good guides for trade fodder anymore, is that Best Buy seems to be sticking to their pull and destroy orders anymore.
