Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread X(Ten)

Status
Not open for further replies.
First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Furthermore, I would like to thank our Wiki editors HeatDolphin and Rocko for updating the Wiki. Great job.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you. Please, whenever possible, use RED font to make the drop info stand out. Thanks again.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinavere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

Common Guide Drop Related Questions(FAQ):

FAQ - If you are new (or a vet with a few questions) look here SECOND! (After reading the above!)

Q: What Are Penny Guides?
A: Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them.

Q: Do all guides from all stores drop at the same time?
A: No. While most chains have nationwide drops within their own store (as in every BB will have the same drops coast to coast), not every different chain drops at the same time (what drops at BB is NOT necessarily dropped at GS). When in doubt, check post TWO for drop info.

Q: I found a penny guide and a clerk denied me! I'ma report 'em!
A: Whoa, hold your horses there, pardner! First of all, not a question. Second, just because something is on the shelf, the clerk does NOT have to sell you that item. Most stores are PRIVATE property and as such can deny you just about anything they want - including a sale. The best advice is to not be rude, not be arrogant, and just try hard to get them to have pity on you.

Q: Why don't the clerks want to sell me their penny guides? Aren't they just throwing them away?
A: As stated above, the stores are ordered by the publisher to trash the guides, and are then given credit for those guides. If they don't do this, the publisher won't give them the credit - it's like losing a sale. On the employee level, selling a penny guide can sometimes get them in trouble (or even fired!) I know it seems silly, but this is their job we're talking about! Respect the man (or woman) behind the counter and you'll get a lot more guides than otherwise!

Q: Should I just ask if the store has penny guides then?
A: No, since that denotes that you have some insider information as to the runnings of these businesses.

Q: What if the clerk wants to know how I know so much about guide drops?
A: If asked where you got your info about guides that pennied, simply say either 'the internet' or 'a friend of mine told me they're on clearance'.

Q: But clerks will know what a penny guide is, right? I can talk to them like anyone else here...
A: Never use the word pennied to ANY store clerks unless you have built up a good rapport with them. Even then, it may seem a little fishy if you know more about their shop than they do.

Q: Are guides labeled as a penny on the shelf?

A: Sometimes. Most times, no. GS seems to label everything that gets a price drop, so often times guides will be stickered. But even so, they most likely won't sell them to you. A sticker does not mean 'have to sell'.

Q: I tried to buy a guide that this thread said was pennied and it didn't ring up as such! What gives?
A: Either 1) Our source was wrong (this rarely happens and is usually verified a FEW times within maybe an hour of posting), or 2) The clerk changed the price. It's usually number 2.

Q: What's the easiest way to get penny guides? This sounds like TONS of work!
A: Best Buy is probably the best place to get guides, followed by GameStop, GameCrazy, Toys R Us and then Blockbuster. From what I've seen though, probably 95% of guides that people get are snagged at BB - the rest come from the other stores. But it never hurts to try!

Q: Has there been a drop recently?
A: If you are asking this question you didn't fully understand the OP - go back and read it once more. When a drop happens, it will be posted, and then placed in the second post - trust us.

Q: How do you guys know so much about penny guides?
A: We sometimes have inside sources with the information from the stores themselves; other times, fellow CAGS just like you or me simply take suspected guides to the register and ask them to ring them up, to check their prices. Feel free to do this yourself, and help give back to the community by telling us what you find! However, DON'T ask "Has anyone checked XXX lately?", unless you are in the right thread (discussion area).

Thanks to GrilledWitOnions for creating the above FAQ, which should eliminate the need for such questions popping up in the thread from this point on out.

Talk about a sham . I went to 3 blockbusters over the past week to pick up some strategy guides from the drops to a penny . I had no problem getting guides at 2 of them they rang up for a penny and person sold them to be no problem at all. I tried today to pick up a super smash brothers guide since i didnt have one of them already. It rang up 1 penny the guy handed it over to the manager who rang it up same thing for 1 penny then he told the guy that these guides were supposed to be pulled from the shelves and destroyed and proceeded to tell him to ring it up and add 9.99 credit on it to bring it up to 10.00 and sell it to me. Talk about a joke. Aren't their laws against that.

Yes, there are very strong laws against false advertisement. Oh wait, the sticker on the actual guide says $10.00. Tough luck, looks like the law is on their side. It doesn't matter if you saw it as 1 cent on the register, at that point you already made up your mind and are willing to purchase the item based on the sticker price. They have every right to deny you the purchase and just say it's a pricing error or a computer glitch.

Just be happy you actually got something, the BBV in my area didn't even bother selling it to me, and then proceeded to remove the penny guides from the floor.

There are in Connecticut.

The only law I know of is that if the stickered price is lower than the one at the register, they're forced to give it to you at the stickered price.

Well if you're in the Buffalo area, don't bother trying the main street BBV in Amherst. They had TONS of guides but refused to sell, unfortunately. The guy was a real prick about it too, I don't really understand why either. He told me that he knew about "hoarders" like me (I literally had 1 SF4 guide) and that he wouldn't put up with our shit. I was just like "it's cool man, I just won't get it then" and he said (this is a direct quote) "you bet your ass you won't."

With his tone you would have thought I was raping his mother. Geeze.

I would think it would be different from state to state. Besides, what is someone going to do? Call the police?

Most states have a department of consumer affairs, or similar. Or, do nothing and let this economy take its Darwinian course.

To me it wasn't that big of a deal, but I was a little surprised at how ticked off he seemed. I'm a 6'3" 23 year old guy who's in decent shape, and he was a 5'5" 35+ fat bald man. It's not like he was intimidating. He was just someone who clearly takes his way too seriously.

It sucks he didn't sell the guide, but why should I trouble myself with going through all that because he's got anger issues?

I would've asked for a manager at that point, since you were only trying to get ONE guide and not grab a cartload(like I've done before ). As soon as the manager came over, I would've told him/her how beligerent the employee was to you and that you are never going to shop at their store again and you're going to tell all of your friends never to shop there.

Of course, there's a 50/50 chance that that shpiel may or may not work on the manager, but it never hurts to try really. But it definitely would've been better if you at least brought how pissy he was to the attention of a manager. People like that should not be working in retail. Period.

Hmmm...he used the term "hoarders?" He was holding the guides for himself, guaranteed. The only people who call other buyers hoarders, are people who are angry that they themselves didn't get stuff. If his primary concern as an employee is to destroy the guides, then he wouldn't care how many guides you bought; one or one hundred is too many. So "hoarding" wouldn't even come into the equation.

Anyway, I agree with other people that you should take time and report him. Assuming your story is 100% accurate (and I am), he should be reprimanded.

You definitely took the high road my man, but after that last snide comment about the 'you bet your ass you won't', I wouldn't have let that slide. Dude has obviously never been challenged before and must keep getting away talking to customers like that. I know here in my municipality in VA, there are laws against profanity in public (although they are rarely reported), however they will constitute a disorderly conduct charge.
That would have been the icing on the cake to see him get publicly humiliated and be issued a citation in his own store.

Now I know would have been a stretch, but I agree with everyone else, report the dude so he has to atleast justify why he used profanity AT a customer. He'll think twice about that next time.

Now when is Fallout 3 gonna drop at BB!?
Now when is Fallout 3 gonna drop at BB!?
My guess is like CoD4: stealthily, and when there are about 3 copies left nationwide.

All guides were pulled at my local Best Buy store. I must be one of the few who actually wanted a Terminator Salvation guide. That was the only guide I want out of this batch.

Anyway, has anybody noticed that the best_buy_outlet store on ebay has been selling penny guides? Right now there are not too many but in the past there has been many freshly dropped penny guide up for sale.

Yeah, it's been mentioned. Kind of weird that they do that.

I have more Terminator guides than any sane person would've bought, pm me and I'll send you one for $1+shipping.
That sucks. I think I have the SKU around here someplace, though I doubt they would let you tell them what the number is to allow them to sell you it.

Here's the SKU# for it, which WILL make it come up .01 at the register.

SKU: 8607395

Good luck and let us know if you manage to get it.
I was lucky enough to get a dude at the register that didn't care if I gave him the SKU. He was like 'Oh wow, a penny. Nice.' Thanks, IATCG.

Just got my first penny guides. I was pretty excited. Got MGS4, KZ2, Terminator, Wolverine Origins and Dead Space from Best Buy. Plus, they happened to have a bunch of PS3 games for half off, and I got the Special Edition of Blazblue for $30.

You're quite welcome. I have like 4-5 of the artbooks myself, though I only put maybe 1-2 on my TL for the moment. I actually have a couple of the complete bundles, since the artbook was originally paired with the official strategy guide.

So if you see the guide by itself, it too was pennied a while ago and should come up as out of the system(since I don't believe it was available as a standalone and only in the bundle).

Not anymore. They let me know that they weren't going to let me buy any more pennied guides. I guess the store manager told them that even though it rings up at that, they HAVE to sell it at 9.99.

Sad - especially since I've heard a manager say "if it rings up a penny, sell it to him for a penny."

This would have been a great time for Jack Nicholson (as The Joker) to walk up with his kazoo and say, "This store needs an enema."

I managed to find a Terminator Salvation, Wolverine origins, NFS Undercover and C&C Red Alert 3 guide but I could not find a Pokemon Visual hardcover guide.. Thanks CAG

At the BB store I went to this morning the cashier asked me if I wanted more guides.

I've gotten every single guide from the latest Best Buy drop, but not one from the Blockbuster drop. I found a store that had DC vs. Mortal Kombat, took two of them to the register, and the clerk gaped at the price. He asked me if I worked for Blockbuster (I should've just said yes, in retrospect), and then called the manager at home-- who, not surprisingly, instructed him not to sell the guides to me. I asked if he could give them to me instead, and he smiled and shook his head. The place also had Smash Bros and Metal Gear Solid 4, but I didn't even try 'cause I already had those guides anyway. Still jonesing for Street Fighter IV...

On the other hand, I found a Gamestop with two Star Ocean: First Departures, and the guy there scanned the guide, grinned and said that the guide had been discontinued and I could have them both on the house!

It's weird, I don't get a lot of pushback on guides. At Best Buy, they'll usually just sell them to me without comment. I repeat-hit a couple of Best Buys this week and still found lots of stock of a few guides, and some weird caches of older ones (Fracture?! haha okay!) so I snapped 'em up. I've already hooked a couple of CAGs up, if anyone is looking for stuff PM me and I'll see what we can do.
It's weird, I don't get a lot of pushback on guides.
You're probably in a region where there hasn't been a jerkwad loudmouth customer sending up red flags by making a big stink about his great penny deals. Used to be everybody played it cool, and there were penny guides for everybody. Only takes one or two knuckleheads to ruin it for us all.

So stay cool, mah babies!

I admit, I've been rude and loud before, especially when the one manager at Circuit City refused to sell me clearance games when they came up at their clearance prices. She was being a total bitch to me, even after I had mentioned that 'a friend' had picked up some games for those same prices. They were all marked $49.99 or some other similarly high price.

Had she just looked in her system, she would've seen that they had been gradually reducing in price till they reached the point that they were at when I stopped at her store.

But no, she said 'mark them up to sticker price if he still wants them'. At which point I believe I told her in no uncertain terms where she could shove those games. It wasn't anything I really wanted that bad anyway and I found them even cheaper at some other store.

I have also had confrontations with media employees over the guides before, though the last one was during that messed up guide drop a while ago where half the guides went back up in price.

The bitch manager was really snotty towards me, saying 'those are the last guides you'll ever get from here'. Of course, I just about a month ago grabbed 2-3 guides from a more recent drop from her store and I made sure she knew I got them as I kinda showed them to her on my way out the door.

So yeah, I've been an asshole customer, but only after being treated like a criminal and being bitched at first for showing how inept their management is and how lazy their employees are..

Best Buy in Brandon, fL on 60 must have restocked penny guides? I saw SF4, Dead Space, Bionic Commando, Killzone and more that I cant remember. They had many of each.

I swear 2 weeks ago they had none of these guides, so i dont know where they came from.

My local Gamestop was a prick to my girlfriend during the Fight Night promo. We were just trying to get a game to keep, too. I came in and handled business, though, and they've been great to me ever since.

On topic:

Lego Batman is ten bucks. Found a Twilight Princess softcover without a sticker, thought I found a copy of the pennied one... but when I brought it up to the register it didn't have a barcode. I knew what was going to happen - girl went to the back, got a code, and it rang up 14.99. Oh well. Worse things have happened.

I know, I have had similar experiences with employees and clearance games. Their minds just can't grapple that the game is actually cheaper than what its marked. :bomb:
I admit, I've been rude and loud before, especially when the one manager at Circuit City refused to sell me clearance games when they came up at their clearance prices. She was being a total bitch to me, even after I had mentioned that 'a friend' had picked up some games for those same prices. They were all marked $49.99 or some other similarly high price.
If that store was like my local Circuit City stores, almost ALL of the games - not just clearance games - had marked prices that didn't match their system prices. I thought this was as integral to the CC experience as the complete lack of any organization of games.

Hell, I'm convinced that one of the myriad reasons why CC went out of business is that customers saw games labeled $49.99 and $59.99 and left empty-handed, not knowing they would have scanned at $39.99, $29.99 or less.

But thanks, lady, for doing your small part to doom CC, eliminate competition and reduce the number of deals out there for us CAGs.

Viva la TRU! I'm thinking BB will get wise to their gift card 'deals' any day now.

You guys may want to check Fallout 3 at BBV. I brought it up to the register (it was marked $12.50). The guy scans it, pauses for about 15-20 seconds and tells me it is ringing up at 24.99. I told him thanks but no thanks and then he removed the sticker and left it behind the counter. It seems weird since every BBV has had 50% off their guides for over a month now.

Wonder if the recent Best Buy values will hold true for me. Was in there today and saw they had all of the recent drops. Forgot to check though. Last drop I checked at that store had them all full price.

The funny thing is bringing up a game or guide that is going to ring up super cheap(even funnier was when that one Prima $10 sale like a year or two ago hit and $10 guides were ringing up .00), then they look at the screen like 'wtf' and cancel the transaction then re-scan the item(s) and they still come up that price.

Of course, the absolute funniest shit ever.....was me price matching a copy of the God Of War II guide @ CC with only a receipt from BB saying it was a penny.:lol: Leave it up to me to price match a fuckin' penny guide. :D

Nice Fraud!
Nice Fraud!
How was anything I mentioned fraud? I simply used Circuit City's own price matching policy to get them to match the price of a guide I picked up about 30 minutes earlier from Best Buy.

The other was a glitch in their system, since they failed to realize that with the Prima game guide sale going on, it would cause guides that were already $10 to zero out.

Game Crazy had a small penny guide drop today:

Crisis Core - Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy XII
God of War II
Harvest Moon - Tree of Tranquility
Infinite Undisc
overy
Tales of Vesperia

My store only had two Crisis Core's and two XII's. Wish we had a Vesperia guide or two for me and my buddy.

Nice! I want all of them!
It's fraud plain and simple, your lucky not to get thrown out of the store and arrested for a penny guide.
How so? They have them on the shelf, that's what they ring up and if a clerk(or even a manager as I've run into from time to time)allow the sale, then where is the fraud?

You really need to check the dictionary, since what we ALL are doing in this thread is NOT fraud. Now, if I bought a penny guide and then tried to return it to Borders without a receipt and say I got it there, then yes, that IS fraud.

But buying something for the price it rings up as is NOT fraud.

Don't like what we're doing in this thread, then ignore it since some of us would rather pay a penny for a guide than get gouged $20 each.

EDIT: And it's you're not your. Please learn proper usage of words prior to using them. Thanks.

You're quite welcome, slowdive. I didn't check FO3 @ BBV, but it went MIA from all of my local Blockbuster stores recently. While not a confirmation that it dropped, the fact it went missing from the shelves is usually a good sign.
