Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread X(Ten)

First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Furthermore, I would like to thank our Wiki editors HeatDolphin and Rocko for updating the Wiki. Great job.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you. Please, whenever possible, use RED font to make the drop info stand out. Thanks again.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinavere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

Common Guide Drop Related Questions(FAQ):

FAQ - If you are new (or a vet with a few questions) look here SECOND! (After reading the above!)

Q: What Are Penny Guides?
A: Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them.

Q: Do all guides from all stores drop at the same time?
A: No. While most chains have nationwide drops within their own store (as in every BB will have the same drops coast to coast), not every different chain drops at the same time (what drops at BB is NOT necessarily dropped at GS). When in doubt, check post TWO for drop info.

Q: I found a penny guide and a clerk denied me! I'ma report 'em!
A: Whoa, hold your horses there, pardner! First of all, not a question. Second, just because something is on the shelf, the clerk does NOT have to sell you that item. Most stores are PRIVATE property and as such can deny you just about anything they want - including a sale. The best advice is to not be rude, not be arrogant, and just try hard to get them to have pity on you.

Q: Why don't the clerks want to sell me their penny guides? Aren't they just throwing them away?
A: As stated above, the stores are ordered by the publisher to trash the guides, and are then given credit for those guides. If they don't do this, the publisher won't give them the credit - it's like losing a sale. On the employee level, selling a penny guide can sometimes get them in trouble (or even fired!) I know it seems silly, but this is their job we're talking about! Respect the man (or woman) behind the counter and you'll get a lot more guides than otherwise!

Q: Should I just ask if the store has penny guides then?
A: No, since that denotes that you have some insider information as to the runnings of these businesses.

Q: What if the clerk wants to know how I know so much about guide drops?
A: If asked where you got your info about guides that pennied, simply say either 'the internet' or 'a friend of mine told me they're on clearance'.

Q: But clerks will know what a penny guide is, right? I can talk to them like anyone else here...
A: Never use the word pennied to ANY store clerks unless you have built up a good rapport with them. Even then, it may seem a little fishy if you know more about their shop than they do.

Q: Are guides labeled as a penny on the shelf?

A: Sometimes. Most times, no. GS seems to label everything that gets a price drop, so often times guides will be stickered. But even so, they most likely won't sell them to you. A sticker does not mean 'have to sell'.

Q: I tried to buy a guide that this thread said was pennied and it didn't ring up as such! What gives?
A: Either 1) Our source was wrong (this rarely happens and is usually verified a FEW times within maybe an hour of posting), or 2) The clerk changed the price. It's usually number 2.

Q: What's the easiest way to get penny guides? This sounds like TONS of work!
A: Best Buy is probably the best place to get guides, followed by GameStop, GameCrazy, Toys R Us and then Blockbuster. From what I've seen though, probably 95% of guides that people get are snagged at BB - the rest come from the other stores. But it never hurts to try!

Q: Has there been a drop recently?
A: If you are asking this question you didn't fully understand the OP - go back and read it once more. When a drop happens, it will be posted, and then placed in the second post - trust us.

Q: How do you guys know so much about penny guides?
A: We sometimes have inside sources with the information from the stores themselves; other times, fellow CAGS just like you or me simply take suspected guides to the register and ask them to ring them up, to check their prices. Feel free to do this yourself, and help give back to the community by telling us what you find! However, DON'T ask "Has anyone checked XXX lately?", unless you are in the right thread (discussion area).

Thanks to GrilledWitOnions for creating the above FAQ, which should eliminate the need for such questions popping up in the thread from this point on out.

LOL!
I dunno man, have you tried using them for kindling? They burn pretty good!

Nabbed a couple of each Best Buy drop to kick around/trade. Except Bionic Commando, couldn't find that one. I'll have to see if I can score a Street Fighter IV guide from BBV tomorrow.
Some new guides pennied at Blockbuster. I managed to pick up:

Street Fighter IV
Metal Gear Solid 4
Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe
Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Checked GTA IV but it was still $10.00.
Can also confirm MK vs. DC, Street Fighter 4, MGS4. I rang them up and she said "this cant be right". I said "a penny huh?"; she asked me where I heard that from and said I read online they were on clearance. However, are Blockbuster Penny guides YMMV? I went to another one and Super Smash Bros and MK vs. DC rang up as $10. Isnt this a system nationwide thing?

Perhaps it was a Franchise store?

Thanks, lamuh13! I picked up KZ2; now I just need a PS3 and the game. :) (I'm a KZ PS2 fan so there's a reasonable probability of that at some point; meanwhile I'll just use it to whet my appetite).
Fallout 3 regular is NOT pennied. I checked it and it rang up $24.99. Got multiples of all the rest though.

Then some dude (customer) in line starts shouting at me as I'm at the register: HEY ARE THOSE PENNY GUIDES???? WHICH ONES???? TELL ME!!!! He's about to shoot his wad, runs over and starts yapping at the mouth about slickdeals and how you can find out on slickdeals about penny guides, then sell them on Ebay for $5. All I could think was:

A. "Be cool, dude."
B. "There go my future penny guides at this store".
Thanks for the Fallout 3 info, but do you think this "dude" would have suspected penny guides if you hadn't walked up to the register with multiples copies of all the guides? Something to be said for consideration/subtlety.

Looks like all the guides from the BB drop disappeared from the site, along with Star Ocean and Little Big Planet. Did anyone manage to check those two guides?
Looks like all the guides from the BB drop disappeared from the site, along with Star Ocean and Little Big Planet. Did anyone manage to check those two guides?
That's a good question, since there's that 'Game Of The Year' edition of LBP coming out this fall(I believe), so it may be like other guides that had multiple versions due to revisions(Godfather, Oblivion).

Each version pennied when the new version with the new info was due to come out.

Half Price Books is one place, which unfortunately we don't have over here in my area, but I've read about people in this thread and the discussion one taking 40+ guides and walking out with some good stuff for essentially $.40.

And then we suffer the consequence of the stores in that district cracking down and pulling and destroying guides, and often people lose their jobs.

Just figured I'd mention one of the places I've heard of. Of course, I've been guilty of taking 300-500 to the local shop at one point and dumping them on them after they sat on my TL for like a year with very little activity.

They initially were giving me $1-1.50 each, but I think since the owner knows I get deals(cuz I gloated like a jerk when he bought 2 Beatmanias from me that I got from BB for $2 each for $50 total) he didn't want to get taken over the coals again by me.

They gave me like $.25 each for them after the initial lot of them, which is still 24x more than I paid, so I was happy.

So, where the hell ya been hiding Gwen?
Ugh, got denied yesterday. I had 2 dead space, a wolverine, and a bionic commando and the guy at the register was like "one cent? That doesn't seem right. I better ask my boss..." I tried to be like "oh, I think they're just clearanced or something" as an explanation so he wouldn't have to ask, but he got on his walkie talkie and then wandered off and came back a few minutes later and said he couldn't sell them. There were still so many left on the shelves too. I'm going to try again today at a different one.
That doesn't seem right at all. If the price is clearly marked...

According to Frosty The Batman, it seems like WWE Legends Of Wrestlemania also dropped. Can someone verify this? My BB doesn't seem to have this guide.

Had a tooth pulled the other day over in Westwood, CA. On my way home I was so numbed up & full of "happy gas" that I found myself dropping in a Best Buy right around the corner from the dentist. I thought I hit the mother 'frikin-load because there were a bunch of guides that have been pennied for awhile. I had CS price check a few & Killzone 2 & MGS were full price while Dead Space, the Pokemon hard cover, & Bionic Commando came up as a penny.

I quickly returned to the guides section to pick up a few more copies & within 30 seconds a manager came up to me & told me there had been a mistake & all guides were priced as marked. To make an annoyingly typical conversation short I left empty handed >.<

Anyway, if anyone wants to try their own luck then go to the Westwood CA BB & see what you can get out the door =)

On the last major drop a few months ago at BB i went to one that is always a gold mine for me and the cashier hassled me about it but after pleading that i'd been coming there for years getting these the store manager let me walk out. Went to the same one yesterday and they had the guides PRICED ON THE SHELF AT A PENNY. Go figure!

Penny guides get me in their stores. Without them I don't think I would even go into a Best Buy. During the two latest drops I've bought 2 games and new cell phones due to the fact that I was in the stores looking for guides.

Please don't have customer service price check items because they have closer contact with the managers. Register monkeys are less likely to spill the beans.

Now my local spot is ruined. :bomb:

YAY interesting story time!

went to best buy today after having no success at blockbuster:

I go in with some headphones I want to return but i go to the guides first..find wolverine and 1 command and conquer..then look behind some stuff and find 3 more command and conquers and one killzone 2 so at that point Im holding the guides under my headphones (big skullcandies) and this employee (ive had trouble with her before) starts walking towards me with a dirty look and i just start walking thru aisles away from her..shes following me but I eventually lose her and make it to the customer service place. I return the headphones and ask to price/check buy the guides. The customer service girl I trust cause she never follows rules (ive returned things without receipts to her)....so I buy those 7 guides and decide to go back to the guide section to see if I missed anything...I knew I at least would walk out with those 7 guides since I already bought them.....Well I go back and find hiding behind a guide, like 10 terminator guides..so I pick em all up, and then I see all the NFS...but I couldnt remember if it was undercover or underground that was on sale (lol) so I only took like 4...I go to the register and she says they are all a penny and scans them all thru and then Im like, can I go back and get one more thing? She says yes (MISTAKE!) So I go and get the 8 other NFS guides and bring em back, and I see the manger and some other employee watching me and following me to the clerk. When I get back to the register, I see the managers point at me and the clerk says yeah its him. And the manager walks up and goes No no no we cannot sell those to you...we have to destroy them. You can keep the ones youve already bought, but you cant have these....so i was just like...ok....whatever and left

if I wasnt so greedy wit hthe NFS guides i probably could have slipped by before the manangers came

so if anyone wants C&C Red Alert guides or Wolverine Guides PM ME!

I am jealous, the EB/GS stores here have pretty much shut the door on any penny guides unless sometimes your buying that game and they offer it to you for a penny...

As far as Bestbuy its pretty much a closed door as well .... ahh the good old days.... last time I was able to get a good number of guides was when the Mario Galaxy Hardcovers went to a penny...

Yeah, my apologies. The store had just opened & the registers were still unmanned. My decision making skills were hampered by the happy-gas.

I can also confirm that WWE Legends is pennied. Got one at the Watertown MA Best Buy, along with Bionic Commando, Spider-Man: Web of Shadows (hey, where'd this come from?), LEGO Indiana Jones (yes!!), and two sealed copies of Fable II LE (HOLY CRAP). Good shopping day. Unfortunately, Target next door didn't have the $15 SOCOM Confrontation I was hoping for, but you can't win 'em all.

Oh yeah, I just had to add this. B:L I highly doubt I just ruined your local spot, lol. There were far too many penny guides at the place I visited. You must be thinking of an entirely different store...or you stink at picking up penny guides...worse than me ;-)

Picked up a total of 19 at two different stores. Paid a total of $.20 :p

They called someone over at the Chapel Hill, BB when I went to purchase some and they let me buy them, but they pulled the rest off the shelves. :(

Bought 12 at the Fairlawn, OH BB with no problems. The cashier thought I was awesome for buying 12 guides for $.13

At the Fairlawn, OH BB I left at least one of each penny guide with the exception of one that had only one copy available. That BB is the only one I have seen the guides tagged as a penny at.

The Canton, OH Strip BB had NO penny guides AT ALL. Either they police their guides well, or we do. :p

I know you do it because you CAN, but honestly none of these guides are worth anything in Resale value. It's not like you got 19 Fable 2 LE.

So, what will you do with 19 guides? It's not winter, so they're not even worth burning for heat.

Thanks for leaving a few in Fairlawn, haven't had time to get out yet with kids going back to school.

If you tools noticed, I left some behind, and I would have left a lot behind at Chapel Hill, but they pulled them off the shelves.

It's called trading fodder, not just reselling.

Also, you're welcome daminion.

I'm not trying to give you a hard time, but most people probably wouldn't even want to trade for those guides. Trading involves paying a couple bucks in postage and those guides just aren't worth a couple bucks.

Oh piss off.

I'm willing to trade/give them to other CAGs. After my experience at the chapel hill BB, I didn't want to just have the employees take them off the shelves and destroy them.

I left at least one of each at the store anyways. I didn't take them all!

Lmao this is hilarious. He's hoarding something that the stores are going to DESTROY anyway. Not only is there no point in leaving anything on the shelves, but he did that anyway and you're STILL yelling at him. My god, you people.

You seem awfully pissed off that he had the nerve to buy something for a penny that you don't even want. What an idiot. He wasted all of 20 cents and a couple of hours of his time of no one wants the guides. I would bet you waste that just being a troll on the boards for a day.

Got the one of the guides I wanted at fairlawn oh, c&c. Missed out on the Pokemon thing for my son, and there weren't any dead space's to be found.

Left a killzone and NFS for anyone who wants it.

I do have an extra Dead Space that I could get to you somehow.

Send me a PM and maybe we can meetup and I'll give the Dead Space guide to you, if you want. :)

EDIT: thank you to N3uro and crazedracer. At least some people have common sense around here. :/

Wow, my post is coming off as me being pissed? Being a troll? I was merely just pointing out a fact that no one will want to trade for those guides if it involves paying more than a penny. If anyone is getting awfully pissed it would seem to be you...

If you come across unpulled guides always grab all them shits. If not they will go in the garbage once you buy 1 and alert them that they are unpulled.

Sheesh. Knock it off with the backseat moderating, will you?

I'll tell you what, ballbarfer: PM me with a list of all of the stuff you want and I'll fly around the country and buy it all up, just so you can't have it.
