Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread XI

First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

Useful Information(and links):

Reduced Price Guide Discussion Thread(KEEP ALL DISCUSSION NOT RELATED TO GUIDE DROPS HERE!!!):

http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=169252

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you. Please, whenever possible, use RED font to make the drop info stand out. Thanks again.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinaevere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

Common Guide Drop Related Questions(FAQ):

FAQ - If you are new (or a vet with a few questions) look here SECOND! (After reading the above!)

Q: What Are Penny Guides?
A: Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Q: Do all guides from all stores drop at the same time?
A: No. While most chains have nationwide drops within their own store (as in every BB will have the same drops coast to coast), not every different chain drops at the same time (what drops at BB is NOT necessarily dropped at GS). When in doubt, check post TWO for drop info.

Q: I found a penny guide and a clerk denied me! I'ma report 'em!
A: Whoa, hold your horses there, pardner! First of all, not a question. Second, just because something is on the shelf, the clerk does NOT have to sell you that item. Most stores are PRIVATE property and as such can deny you just about anything they want - including a sale. The best advice is to not be rude, not be arrogant, and just try hard to get them to have pity on you.

Q: Why don't the clerks want to sell me their penny guides? Aren't they just throwing them away?
A: As stated above, the stores are ordered by the publisher to trash the guides, and are then given credit for those guides. If they don't do this, the publisher won't give them the credit - it's like losing a sale. On the employee level, selling a penny guide can sometimes get them in trouble (or even fired!) I know it seems silly, but this is their job we're talking about! Respect the man (or woman) behind the counter and you'll get a lot more guides than otherwise!

Q: Should I just ask if the store has penny guides then?
A: No, since that denotes that you have some insider information as to the runnings of these businesses.

Q: What if the clerk wants to know how I know so much about guide drops?
A: If asked where you got your info about guides that pennied, simply say either 'the internet' or 'a friend of mine told me they're on clearance'.

Q: But clerks will know what a penny guide is, right? I can talk to them like anyone else here...
A: Never use the word pennied to ANY store clerks unless you have built up a good rapport with them. Even then, it may seem a little fishy if you know more about their shop than they do.

Q: Are guides labeled as a penny on the shelf?
A: Sometimes. Most times, no. GS seems to label everything that gets a price drop, so often times guides will be stickered. But even so, they most likely won't sell them to you. A sticker does not mean 'have to sell'.

Q: I tried to buy a guide that this thread said was pennied and it didn't ring up as such! What gives?
A: Either 1) Our source was wrong (this rarely happens and is usually verified a FEW times within maybe an hour of posting), or 2) The clerk changed the price. It's usually number 2.

Q: What's the easiest way to get penny guides? This sounds like TONS of work!
A: Best Buy is probably the best place to get guides, followed by GameStop, GameCrazy, Toys R Us and then Blockbuster. From what I've seen though, probably 95% of guides that people get are snagged at BB - the rest come from the other stores. But it never hurts to try!

Q: Has there been a drop recently?
A: If you are asking this question you didn't fully understand the OP - go back and read it once more. When a drop happens, it will be posted, and then placed in the second post - trust us.

Q: How do you guys know so much about penny guides?
A: We sometimes have inside sources with the information from the stores themselves; other times, fellow CAGS just like you or me simply take suspected guides to the register and ask them to ring them up, to check their prices. Feel free to do this yourself, and help give back to the community by telling us what you find! However, DON'T ask "Has anyone checked XXX lately?", unless you are in the right thread (discussion area).

Thanks to GrilledWitOnions for creating the above FAQ, which should eliminate the need for such questions popping up in the thread from this point on out.
I found some updates in the system, where I found the Feb drop list, all the way up to April and it didn't have any "pull these guides" tasks. So maybe this time it won't get sent out. I'll continue to check every time I go in to work which is usually always the end of the week.
And if I get the chance tomorrow, I'll also check.

Only 2 of the penny guides were at my local BB - Ninja Sigma 2 (sealed) and Champions Online. They had Scribblenauts (?) and WOW Dungeon Comp. 3!!! Did not know that was out... The Ninja guide had a $0.01 yellow price tag on it. None of the others did. Ah well, better than nothing!
Cleaned up. Keeping Samuel L Jackson, because he's awesome.

Much obliged, ma'am. *tips hat* Nice to have you back around these parts.

I stopped by the local BB and all of the Dragon Age guides were gone for some reason. They had 3 regular and 1 collector's just a day ago. Very strange. Maybe they were pulled? Can't imagine they all just sold that quick.

Got shot down today at GS on SH:SM and L4D. Can't believe they had that behind part 2. Forgive my laziness to check, but I figured that dropped a while ago (?)

Anyways, I hate how some of the employees think its ok to start adjusting the price to the sticker price! Its like, why would I take those two guides up there, knowing they're a penny, seeing them scan in at a penny, then want to pay full price? like out of all the guides, I just magically picked those two. when I declined the guy couldn't understand..he was like, the sticker is the price, I pointed to the screen where it said 0.01!! :bomb: oh well.

The one time I got denied and lied to by the assholes at Chapel Hill OH(I ended up telling the one manager fuck you!) the one employee saw me grabbing a stack of guides and went up to the front ahead of me to "buy a drink" but actually did it just to tell the clerk to charge me full price. Pissed me off to no end.

Oh noes. You guys weren't able to buy something they shouldn't be selling in the first place. Guess you'll have to find something else to gather dust on your bookshelves.

Why is it that most of the last 50 posts, or so, look as if they could be Facebook status updates or personal blog stories????

It wasn't the getting denied that pissed me off. It's the manager lying to me and the employee going out of his way to make the cashier charge me full price.

If they had just explained that they couldn't sell them instead of trying to charge me full price by saying it was a mistake and glitch in the system then I wouldn't have been as pissed off.

I love when they pull that 'glitch in the system' shit. I had the one bitch manager at a Circuit City up in NY state pull that excuse out of her ass about 4 years ago when I found some games marked $49.99 that were on clearance for $4.99.

She then practically accused me of tampering with the prices somehow. Yeah lady, I snuck into the back room, got onto the computer you guys enter prices on and made up my own sales deal.

Mind you, the day I heard CC was shutting down I was tempted to take a trek to that store n ask for her n say 'ain't it a bitch, bitch?'.
No, I'm going to be a Nazi in this thread when I move tonight and burn all the inferior guides I have triplicates of before departing.

Exterminate the Maddens.

I tried selling and trading the lesser guides away, as they are the cause of all of my collection's problems, taking up all that precious shelf space. Practically controlling media.

Since i can't get them relocated to someone elses collection, disposing of them is essentially my final solution.
Oh my ears! Oh God, my ears! The subtle undertones are killing me!

This coming from the guy who sent me a taunting pm when I asked about penny guides. How about you go back to Slickdeals where you came from.

Oh, I forgot to mention to you chicago folks. The Bestbuy at the HIP had about 10-15 Prince of Persia softcover guides. If you're looking for one, and are nearby, there you go. Melrose park, Burbank, elston, are basically pointless. They have nothing. Melrose park had some games for $15 bucks. A boy and his blob, dead space extration, fable 2 and such.

Oh, and the GS in the mall has exactly one Fable 2 expansion penny guide. I bought the other one.

If anyone ever needs Fallout 3 guides let em know. I can snag em for cost (Probably $5.50 shipped they are HUGE)as my bestbuy still has 40+ for some reason.

I am assuming dragon age did not drop for either version, since they are on the shelf at my BB.
I dunno Rocko, these threads have tons of posts and we hear the same questions and arguments and discussions over and over. Folks get sick of the same useless posts when they're hoping to see information which is actually new and helpful.

So can I PM you to delete repeat questions and general banter in every single deals thread that gets considerable attention, because they're not useful to me? Because, you know, that's more or less the content of every single thread that passes through the deal forums, minus a few useful posts containing information about the deal.
This coming from the guy who sent me a taunting pm when I asked about penny guides. How about you go back to Slickdeals where you came from.
Hey, you TOTALLY took that PM the wrong way. And after you sent me a PM back and then posted a nasty comment on here, I sent you another PM that had all the info you needed in it.

Settle down. It's cool.
Oh, and the GS in the mall has exactly one Fable 2 expansion penny guide. I bought the other one.
Thanks for the info, I'll see if it's still there. You should really check the BBs up north. I haven't hit them yet so there's probably some pennies up there.

anyone else confirm missing or pulled DAO CE's? Somebody on CAG (bvharris *cough cough*) just sold one in a lowball for well over sale price. Not wanting to thread crap on his lowball, I just sat back and smiled as bids went way over retail, thinking I might as well grab one for $35 while a few BB's still had them..
And you love reading every last one too. Admit it.;)
you said i was on your ignore list but i guess you were so desperate for attention you took me off or in fact are a dirty filthy liar and never put me on. YOU NEVER GOT A PENNY GUIDE PM\'ED YOU LIAR

Actually, I do take people off of the ignore list all of the time or hit 'view post' when I wanna see what they have to say.

As for not PMing a penny guide though, that I most certainly did, but since Circuit City has been out of business for a while now and I did that about a year before they started closing sales that receipt is loooooong gone.

But hey, if you wanna continue going back and forth, have fun talking to yourself because I'm done responding to ya.;)

Stopped by BB today to pick up my eventually free LotR steelbooks and stopped by the guides to see if they left the tekken 6 guides out(which they didn't) and the guy who had looked stuff up for me before asked if I was back for more. I wanted to say "no, your lying asshole of a manager wouldn't let me have any" but I was polite and said "just looking."

Relax. A mod already had to come in here and zap away a whole bunch of stuff that was way off topic and what not just yesterday. It seems I garner new fans on here by the day.

I kinda enjoy the attention.....NOT.

LOL, IATCG, you should just put in parentheses (General Discussion) but all joking aside, I don't mind all the back and forth banter, if anything, this thread is the most cohesive unit I've seen. We're ready to mount up at the drop of a dime, and we stay ready! Other threads, the deals come, they die, they're gone..

Shrike and guinaevere, far be from me to tell you how to handle your responsibilities but IMO it seems that some temp (and maybe perma) bans are in order at this point.

I actually do think IATTCG likes the attention. That's why we have to hear the same stories over and over.

That being said, Joemartinez has got anger issues. he PMed me saying he was reporting me to the mods for personal attacks. Then proceeded to talk about my mom. I thought I was in 7th grade again. Ahhh to feel young again.

i agree

IATCG, you're doing a great job with this thread, it just seems as of late people who joined in Jan/Feb this year are extra argumentative. Clutters up the pages when people have to correct them, or comment on morals or the evils of companies. I've recently found the ignore button and have made good use of it. That said, thanks and keep up the good work.

That should be some more cleanup, though if there were some extra posts that were nuked, my apologies.

Plus, we've had someone else with a week vacation from here in trying to stir up trouble where there isn't any.

Sigh, my local Best Buy has been pulling early. There was no sign of any penny guides anywhere.
how much does it normally cost to ship guides , and what type of package and where do you buy the packages to ship them in ?
It depends on how you send them out. If it's only one guide, I'll usually use a flat rate Priority Mail envelope($4.95) to ship out single guides. But if the guides won't fit into the envelope without being smushed, I'll typically use a bubble mailer, put cardboard on at least one side of the guides and ship it out Media Mail.

Only problem with shipping guides Media is that they seem to take f'n forever to get there sometimes.

Don't forget to add in Delivery Confirmation though, which costs varying amounts depending on whether or not you buy it at a retail post office($.75) or via Paypal(I believe it's under $.20).

Media Mail shipping typically runs around $3-4 or close to there from what I remember(including $1 for buying a single mailer in that estimate). Then again, I usually use Priority as it's just easier. I don't have to try and cram the guides into a mailer, pad them with cardboard and the whole nine yards. You just plop the guide(s) in there, seal it up and mail it out.

On very rare occasions, someone will grab 10 or so guides from me, which I then ship out via a flat rate Priority Mail box($11 or so). It helps if you also wrap up the guides in a plastic bag and perhaps seal said bag in the event the mailer is somehow compromised in transit.

As for where to buy the packages to mail out the guides with, the Priority Mail ones are free from the post office and they'll supposedly even deliver some of them right to your house. But the bubble mailers are typically bought from any standard retail store(Target, Kmart, etc). Of course, I've bought mine from Dollar Tree before.

tl;dr version:
Buy mailers from any store(Kmart, WalMart, Target, Dollar Tree). It costs between $4-6 for mailing guides, dependent on whether or not you calculate shipping from home or go to the post office. Delivery Confirmation is a MUST for sending anything. It costs $.75 or so from the post office and $.20 or under through Paypal.

Stopped at the League City, TX Best Buy and they had all of this drops guides except Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 and the GTA guides.
