Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread XI

First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

Reduced Price Guide Discussion Thread(KEEP ALL DISCUSSION NOT RELATED TO GUIDE DROPS HERE!!!):

http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=169252

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you. Please, whenever possible, use RED font to make the drop info stand out. Thanks again.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinaevere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

Common Guide Drop Related Questions(FAQ):

FAQ - If you are new (or a vet with a few questions) look here SECOND! (After reading the above!)

Q: What Are Penny Guides?
A: Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Q: Do all guides from all stores drop at the same time?
A: No. While most chains have nationwide drops within their own store (as in every BB will have the same drops coast to coast), not every different chain drops at the same time (what drops at BB is NOT necessarily dropped at GS). When in doubt, check post TWO for drop info.

Q: I found a penny guide and a clerk denied me! I'ma report 'em!
A: Whoa, hold your horses there, pardner! First of all, not a question. Second, just because something is on the shelf, the clerk does NOT have to sell you that item. Most stores are PRIVATE property and as such can deny you just about anything they want - including a sale. The best advice is to not be rude, not be arrogant, and just try hard to get them to have pity on you.

Q: Why don't the clerks want to sell me their penny guides? Aren't they just throwing them away?
A: As stated above, the stores are ordered by the publisher to trash the guides, and are then given credit for those guides. If they don't do this, the publisher won't give them the credit - it's like losing a sale. On the employee level, selling a penny guide can sometimes get them in trouble (or even fired!) I know it seems silly, but this is their job we're talking about! Respect the man (or woman) behind the counter and you'll get a lot more guides than otherwise!

Q: Should I just ask if the store has penny guides then?
A: No, since that denotes that you have some insider information as to the runnings of these businesses.

Q: What if the clerk wants to know how I know so much about guide drops?
A: If asked where you got your info about guides that pennied, simply say either 'the internet' or 'a friend of mine told me they're on clearance'.

Q: But clerks will know what a penny guide is, right? I can talk to them like anyone else here...
A: Never use the word pennied to ANY store clerks unless you have built up a good rapport with them. Even then, it may seem a little fishy if you know more about their shop than they do.

Q: Are guides labeled as a penny on the shelf?
A: Sometimes. Most times, no. GS seems to label everything that gets a price drop, so often times guides will be stickered. But even so, they most likely won't sell them to you. A sticker does not mean 'have to sell'.

Q: I tried to buy a guide that this thread said was pennied and it didn't ring up as such! What gives?
A: Either 1) Our source was wrong (this rarely happens and is usually verified a FEW times within maybe an hour of posting), or 2) The clerk changed the price. It's usually number 2.

Q: What's the easiest way to get penny guides? This sounds like TONS of work!
A: Best Buy is probably the best place to get guides, followed by GameStop, GameCrazy, Toys R Us and then Blockbuster. From what I've seen though, probably 95% of guides that people get are snagged at BB - the rest come from the other stores. But it never hurts to try!

Q: Has there been a drop recently?
A: If you are asking this question you didn't fully understand the OP - go back and read it once more. When a drop happens, it will be posted, and then placed in the second post - trust us.

Q: How do you guys know so much about penny guides?
A: We sometimes have inside sources with the information from the stores themselves; other times, fellow CAGS just like you or me simply take suspected guides to the register and ask them to ring them up, to check their prices. Feel free to do this yourself, and help give back to the community by telling us what you find! However, DON'T ask "Has anyone checked XXX lately?", unless you are in the right thread (discussion area).

Thanks to GrilledWitOnions for creating the above FAQ, which should eliminate the need for such questions popping up in the thread from this point on out.

Best Buy Galactic Command NEVER closes, since they're always on the prowl looking for the next sucker to pay $50+ for an HDMI cable.:D

And yes, we have had drops on other days than Monday before.
...snip...
However, my local two BB stores no longer have even ONE copy of it in stock, so either they're stashed in the back, junked out already, sold out or they've been moved to the Outlet Center page on BestBuy.com or whatever else they do with old guides that haven't moved in a while.
Check the employee bathroom, err, reading room. :bouncy:
In the past they usually dropped at beginning of month, but its much more random lately it seems.
The last three drops have been on the third Monday of the month. I think they've scrapped the first Monday tradition in favor of the third Monday.
Regardless, it was funny seeing all the frenzy ramp up with no real basis for it.
Last Monday was the third Monday, that's the basis.
Last Monday was the third Monday, that's the basis.
My point being there was a lot of activity based on nothing more than a guess.

Stopped by and scanned Assassin's Creed II, Prince of Persia, Borderlands and SW:TFU. All scanned for $19.99, except for the SW guide, which was $9.99. GTA IV was marked $19.99, too, but I didn't scan that one.

I picked up Mortal Kombat vs Dc today in Waterford ct they had a stack marked at $10 in handwritting but rang up .01. There were also some other guides from previous drops like transformers, metriod and a couple others.
^^^What store? Gamestop?
Those are from the last best buy drop.

You should have picked up some Metroid Trilogy guides, it's pretty in-demand as guides go.

I stopped by my closest BB yesterday to grab some .00 Sudoku 'goodness' when I saw the girl who was working media during the last drop(the one I divided the guides they had on the shelf with:D). I was glad to see that she is still working there. I thought she might've gotten in trouble for buying the guides when I didn't see her for over a month there.

She clearly remembered me from the guide drop and I told her why I was there and she just laughed when I told her this makes 6 games in 6 months.

She also told me that she DID register on CAG under simply her first name, which I verified last night. So hopefully when she gets some time she may well turn out to be a source for us as well.

Snagged myself a sealed Metroid Prime Trilogy with a Sudoku and a coke for the price of 1.88. Dude ringing me up just said that's a damn good deal. lol

GameStop has the Gears of War 2, World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, and Grand Theft Auto IV Guides all at 9.99 in this weeks ad, down from 19.99..

Not a penny guide, but it's still reduced.

Went to an out-of-the-way Best Buy today and found they had shrinkwrapped all the guides left from previous drops and tagged them $2.99. Of course, the barcodes still scanned at $0.01. I had a good chuckle, then paid my pennies and left.

Hell, if stores would clearance them out instead of pennying them, I would definitely be willing to pay 3-5 bucks for most guides. Like my stupid GS that is 100% adament about destoying them (the dude that runs it is awesome though, best GS I've ever been to, but he's too by the letter)

I have never been successful in seeing any of these guides at all, at any store... so I'm wondering if there is anything else to it other than just catching it on the shelf? Or is my area just pretty on top of getting rid of their stock?

Not sure, I've gone out to BB a few times since I was curious about the thread and have scored a few guides. I don't ask around, I just look at the second post and see if anything matches up. Really helps having the list with you so you don't buy the wrong version. Almost bought the hardback fallout 3 game of the year before realizing it'd be full price.

Can I assume the price has dropped if I can't find a particular strat guide on the BB website? The white hardcover guide for Assassins Creed 2 is gone from the site...

Nope. Guide drops happen on Mondays. Just because it's gone from the site doesn't mean a thing.

At my local Gamestop, the 9.99 markdown guides like TR Underworld, GTA IV, and Metal Gear Solid 4 were gone. Hmmm. I was hoping they would go $5 before being tossed, oh well.

You could always order them off the kiosk in store.
^ How does that work, ordering off the kiosk in store? I'm assuming they don't show the 1 penny price...
Actually, they do. Just go on the kiosk and search for "game guide". All they have left is:

Cheats & Codes Summer 2009
Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon
Godfather II
Mirror's Edge Hardcover
Prince Of Persia LE
Rise Of The Argonauts
Sonic Unleashed
WWE Legends of Wrestlemania

However, unless you have a free shipping code, or Premier Silver, shipping is $5.99 per guide.

I'm thinking about doing that. Has anyone had any issues doing it? And where can I get free shipping code?

So they do show up in the kiosk in the store as one penny, but then I have to pay $5.99 per guide even if I ship to the same destination?

yes
I wasnt able to find anything via the Kiosk. Basically when you search it shows up as "73" results, then when you actually click on it it only comes up with 59.

It doesn't necessarily mean there wasnt a penny drop, it just means that if there was one, they wont be available for order. Another thing i'm wondering about, is if the penny drops from Early october are still available on the website because they never dropped to a penny on the public website (only the kiosK), if the "missing" 14 are the guides that dropped in late October (SFIV, Fallout, Zelda, LBP, etc) and were taken off the website because they went public for a penny.
does that mean the october ones are potentially still there? looking for zelda..

Thanks for the new interesting way to get some guides. I'll be trying it today.
Does Best Buy not do Penny books any more? I can't remeber the last I bought one from them
They usually 'freeze' dropping any guides till after the holidays. They do a big drop around this time of the year, so I would potentially look for a drop to happen next Monday.

Don't quote me on that, but this is around the same time they did it last year.

And jterp7, if your BB store isn't up on pulling the guides, then yes you could still see ones from October there.:D

is the only way to check the price by scanning it at the cashier? (seeing as its dropped off the site) I'm guessing I'd have to do the kiosk check? This is all assuming that I find it there physically in the first place. Have there been any instances where the cashier tries to mark the price as original and not sell it as a penny?

I know that this is technically off topic, but since it deals with pennying items out, I figured I'd ask here.

Doesn't BestBuy traditionally penny out the pre-orders of items once they're released? I wondering since my friend really wants some spare ME2 Inferno Armor codes. Since I pre-ordered from Bestbuy, I figured that maybe I could just pick up another for a penny.

At the one newer BB by me the employees ALWAYS call over a manager and the manager says to charge cover price, at which point I say no thanks and walk out.

But I don't think they can really just mark it up without telling you, since it should come up as .01. Just act surprised and say 'wow that's a hell of a deal'.

Of course, I've always told the cashiers ahead of time that a 'friend of mine' told me he got these guides for a super cheap clearance price. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

And GuardianE, I believe they DO penny out the pre-order items, but no one has mentioned being able to get them for a while successfully once the game(s) are out.

I think the last time someone tried was when Fallout 3 initially came out and they were grabbing the Nuka Cola or something bottle openers.

I got some penny Deca Sports gloves at Best Buy yesterday. I think that was a preorder item (or at least a bonus item with purchase).

I've had different experiences trying to pick up some guides. Sometimes the people don't care, I've had different experiences at the same store when getting Gears 2. The first time it rang up as a penny the guy just bumped it to 19.99 and gave me a dirty look and walked off. I said no thanks to the guide saying I didn't like the glare the guy gave me. Later I go back and go for it again, this time the girl that helped PM TRU's buy 2 get a 60 dollar gc deal is there, and she looks at me and said, "If that's what it's ringing up as, then that's what we're selling it as." Paid for that and a copy of Endwar and walked happily out of the building.

Saw at one BB they had a ton of spectrobes shirts which I believe were preorder items, but there was no price tag, they were placed over a price tag for a wallet in the ds section at 7.99. Would those be pennied as well?

That's actually illegal to do in some states too. Michigan was one example, I think.

I am not sure, but I think I remember a friend who works at BBY telling me how BBY handles preorder items. For things like golden guns and codes, the person who works that night clearing out the shelves usually keeps them.

Regarding the Spectrobes shirts, I believe those were still $10 or $15. The only reason I knew the Deca Sports gloves were pennied was because they had a price tag for a penny :)

Right you are... I have scored lots of stuff in the past for being incorrectly marked.

so I went looking for some deals and found an unmarked SFIV guide, didn't really need it but I thought it was one of the deals seeing as it was almost a year old now. There was no cover, no sku and long story short the store could not sell it, yet it still sat on the shelf. WTF?

Just noticed at BB behind the pile of Army of Two the 40th Day was a sealed guide for the original one... didn't pick it up but next time will for sure
Notice Scribblenauts, Halo Wars and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 for $13.98 at Target. No penny I know, but "reduced" it is..
Saw that, too. Thought it was kind of funny. I wonder which happens first: one or more of these pennies at BB, or they drop to $4.98?

Almost a year old? I thought this dropped in like October. Anyway, if you want it that badly, I'd recommend just bringing it to the front and asking if you can have it. It's out of the wrapper, there's no barcode or SKU, and it's probably banged up. Worst thing they can do is tell you no.

If you DON'T want it (I usually don't, if they're missing stuff), just have fun watching it slowly deteriorate every time you come back.
