Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread XI

First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

Reduced Price Guide Discussion Thread(KEEP ALL DISCUSSION NOT RELATED TO GUIDE DROPS HERE!!!):

http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=169252

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you. Please, whenever possible, use RED font to make the drop info stand out. Thanks again.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Amazon
Barnes&Noble

ToysRUs

Thanks to floormat, Guinaevere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

Common Guide Drop Related Questions(FAQ):

FAQ - If you are new (or a vet with a few questions) look here SECOND! (After reading the above!)

Q: What Are Penny Guides?
A: Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Q: Do all guides from all stores drop at the same time?
A: No. While most chains have nationwide drops within their own store (as in every BB will have the same drops coast to coast), not every different chain drops at the same time (what drops at BB is NOT necessarily dropped at GS). When in doubt, check post TWO for drop info.

Q: I found a penny guide and a clerk denied me! I'ma report 'em!
A: Whoa, hold your horses there, pardner! First of all, not a question. Second, just because something is on the shelf, the clerk does NOT have to sell you that item. Most stores are PRIVATE property and as such can deny you just about anything they want - including a sale. The best advice is to not be rude, not be arrogant, and just try hard to get them to have pity on you.

Q: Why don't the clerks want to sell me their penny guides? Aren't they just throwing them away?
A: As stated above, the stores are ordered by the publisher to trash the guides, and are then given credit for those guides. If they don't do this, the publisher won't give them the credit - it's like losing a sale. On the employee level, selling a penny guide can sometimes get them in trouble (or even fired!) I know it seems silly, but this is their job we're talking about! Respect the man (or woman) behind the counter and you'll get a lot more guides than otherwise!

Q: Should I just ask if the store has penny guides then?
A: No, since that denotes that you have some insider information as to the runnings of these businesses.

Q: What if the clerk wants to know how I know so much about guide drops?
A: If asked where you got your info about guides that pennied, simply say either 'the internet' or 'a friend of mine told me they're on clearance'.

Q: But clerks will know what a penny guide is, right? I can talk to them like anyone else here...
A: Never use the word pennied to ANY store clerks unless you have built up a good rapport with them. Even then, it may seem a little fishy if you know more about their shop than they do.

Q: Are guides labeled as a penny on the shelf?
A: Sometimes. Most times, no. GS seems to label everything that gets a price drop, so often times guides will be stickered. But even so, they most likely won't sell them to you. A sticker does not mean 'have to sell'.

Q: I tried to buy a guide that this thread said was pennied and it didn't ring up as such! What gives?
A: Either 1) Our source was wrong (this rarely happens and is usually verified a FEW times within maybe an hour of posting), or 2) The clerk changed the price. It's usually number 2.

Q: What's the easiest way to get penny guides? This sounds like TONS of work!
A: Best Buy is probably the best place to get guides, followed by GameStop, GameCrazy, Toys R Us and then Blockbuster. From what I've seen though, probably 95% of guides that people get are snagged at BB - the rest come from the other stores. But it never hurts to try!

Q: Has there been a drop recently?
A: If you are asking this question you didn't fully understand the OP - go back and read it once more. When a drop happens, it will be posted, and then placed in the second post - trust us.

Q: How do you guys know so much about penny guides?
A: We sometimes have inside sources with the information from the stores themselves; other times, fellow CAGS just like you or me simply take suspected guides to the register and ask them to ring them up, to check their prices. Feel free to do this yourself, and help give back to the community by telling us what you find! However, DON'T ask "Has anyone checked XXX lately?", unless you are in the right thread (discussion area).

Thanks to GrilledWitOnions for creating the above FAQ, which should eliminate the need for such questions popping up in the thread from this point on out.

Picked up one lone pennied AC2 LE guide from Gamestop. Didn't try any others since I haven't checked this thread since Friday

Just saw all of the GS drops at my GS and I tried with just one of the AC LE and got shot down. I did everything right, but so did the employee I guess. Too bad, I'll have to stick with getting my drops from BB.
I have a receipt that I will post sometime today with sunshine islands on it....I might have to dig thru the trash tho..
Mystery solved:

Looked at my receipt, no where on there is Harvest Moon DS Sunshine Islands....the clerk must have just made a mistake thinking they were the Animal Island one....

So, to confirm...Harvest Moon DS Sunshine Islands DID NOT DROP...(and I have 2 of them):D

Struck out at San Mateo and both Redwood City, CA Gamestops, which pulled all the guides.
However, the cardboard bin outside the south Redwood City location contained Ratchet: Crack in Time (was desperately looking for this), COD: Wii Edition, and Star Wars, all labeled 1 cent. Thanks to the OPs for the list!
So, any anticipation for a drop tomorrow? Its Sunday night, kids!
There would be more rumblings about Best Buys website deleting guides if there was a potential BB drop.

Although it will be interesting to see how us Cagers handle the BB drops going forward. Last month you pretty much had to hide the guides a week before, then go back and buy them

If so and the $20 off coupon for the Nerf N-Strike bundle from the Gamer's Club is still working tomorrow, I know what I'm doing in the afternoon.;)

interesting..I didn't think about that, and nobody really mentioned it in the thread at the time, gotta keep that in mind next time.

on a more random occurrence, there is this one BB I go to, and for the second straight week in a row, they put old guides in the rack that weren't there before. First I grabbed Haze & SF4, then last week I nabbed an Assassins Creed Art Book (for part 1!!) figured that was definitely a penny, sure enough :D just curious if anyone else has encountered this? thats why I always make it a priority to glance at the guides..

The one BB I visit has done the same thing a few times.

Then again, there's still two BBs in my area with old guides. One with a couple Transformers RotF guides, and one that has 5+ SFIVs and some others.

My local Best Buy has a habit of doing that, but the manager seems to be a little nutty. I asked about the Final Fantasy face plates the other day and he authorized someone to open up one of the Limited Box Sets to see what's in there. (Needless to say, I did not allow such sacrilege since I knew they weren't there.)

I stopped by one of my secondary BBs and found that they are fully stocked with CEs so I'm hoping for a drop on some of those. Was able to pick up a couple extra GTA4 guides to trade for those that missed out.
Of course, they were just waiting for you to ask.
You've reminded me of a book I had long ago: "Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions." I miss that book.

I've also noticed the BB beast regurgitating a few guides a lately. Picked up a sealed Godfather II after it disappeared months ago.

More then likely an employee found the pulled guide in the back and thought it should be on the floor.

How funny would it be if none of us checked today and all the great guides are pennied. This thread would go crazy once the first person confirms a drop this late in the day.

ok, I went to pleasant hill, CA bb.

checked all the CE's(bs2, me2, ac2, they even have ff13 CE)

all full price. They have couple ff13 CE copies left

I took the wii blaster and one copy of ff13 CE to register. The cashier seems to know about the coupon. He called the manager to overrited and made the wii blaster free. Also got 15% off the ff13 CE for some reason (maybe cause it was purchased with a game)

I've never had the pleasure of obtaining a penny guide, but was hoping the Dragon Age: CEs at Best Buy dropped, but no go. I'm thinking I'm just going to go ahead and buy one. Since release, there have been 8 of those guides and they are tormenting me lol.

Hit two gamestops today. 1st one nothing and second one found ten guides all from different drops. I have scored at this store before so I figured I was golden, no go this time. the cashier asked the other one what to do and he said to get rid of them or charge full price. I said no thanks and walked out.

Stores throwing out strategy guides rather than taking even a couple of bucks or even say 50 cents for them will always remain one of life's unanswered mysteries.

No, it's not. Retailers get a certain percentage back in a refund from the publishers for destroying any remaining guides.

Well even that is pretty dumb. Such a waste.

Anyone looking for cheap(er) guides might want to check their local GameCrazy (if they're going out of business). I just got several guides for like $4.00 each - and these are good guides. Stuff like Infamous, Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition, PERSONA 3, etc... :booty:
Making money is dumb? Don't ever start your own business.
Apparently I didn't type in English (or your preferred language).

Your English is fine. Your sense is not.

Best Buy will make more money by destroying the guides that they were asked to do by the publishers.
What they get from the publishers is greater than the few cents you're willing to pay.

Come to think of it, I think the issue is with your math skills, not your English skills.

True. Plus, if people knew that guides would keep getting marked down until sold, they would wait even longer to buy, devaluing the newer copies as they would sell even less.

This is the same reason stores throw out perfectly good food. Because people who could afford it would simply wait until it was marked down enough, then buy it. Destroying merchandise ensures that consumers stay active in the buying cycle.

They may not be a penny, but I encourage anyone with a Half Price Books nearby to give it a look. They are running coupons this week that offer 30% off today, 20% off on Fri/Sat, and a whopping 50% off on Sunday.
Coupons
Selection and pricing varies wildly. The stores near me had a few gems, but I hit a store a little farther out and hit the freaking jackpot. Multiple Valkyria Chronicles for $2.55, pristine Dragon Age Origins for $4.50, minty Resistance 2 for $2.55. And on and on. 11 guides at that one store alone. Most under $3.

Just a heads up.

Kinda bummed that I didn't get those coupons myself. I thought I was on their e-mail list. I totally would have gone on Monday with the coupon.

I didn't receive them either. I found out about them here.

You know you can just print them out, right? They are universal. In fact, if you go to a store and tell them you're on the e-mail list, they'll just give you that day's discount (at least at the stores near me).

Make sure you go on Sunday. 50% off!

I'll be on vacation then, so I hope they have a store in St. Petersburg, FL!!! I would kill for a cheap DA: O or Persona 3 guide. Shit! They have no stores at all in Florida!

Something interesting happened today. I went to BB to check the old drops and found a few. When I checked out, the first pennied guide had some kind of pop-up on the cashier's screen that she had to confirm. She let me buy them, but before I could leave, some blue-shirt came carrying a clipboard came over and told my cashier about them being dropped from the system... yada yada...in a mild, non-threatening voice. I couldn't hear exactly what was said without being too conspicuous. I went on my way with the guides though.:)

Maybe it's a manager auto-flag in the system now? Strange, never happened to me before. Even with free games. I just find it too coincidental that she showed up just as I was buying those guides.

Did you have any M-rated guides. Sometimes, there's a pop-up for those.

Brutal Legend, Prototype, GTA Episodes LC, and Mirror's Edge

I still find it suspicious that she showed up just as I was getting those though. Where's my tin foil hat!!!!

Yeah, there's a pop up for GTA (IV and Liberty City) for sure, because one cashier actually had me show them an ID (I look no where NEAR underage). The manager was probably just snooping ... they seem to do that sometimes! ;)

Nice score, though! At least you got them ... before ... the manager got there to nix them! :D

Tried picking up GTA: Chinatown Wars, Final Fantasy: Dissidia, Call of Duty Modern Reflex and Tekken 6 guides at Gamestop. As soon as the cashier rung me up, he didn't hesitate and tried to mark me up to full price. I politely declined and moved on.

Tried going over to Best Buy and it seems like all the guides were pulled.

Getting penny guides are getting harder and harder it seems.
