Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread XI

First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

Useful Information(and links):

Reduced Price Guide Discussion Thread(KEEP ALL DISCUSSION NOT RELATED TO GUIDE DROPS HERE!!!):

http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=169252

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you. Please, whenever possible, use RED font to make the drop info stand out. Thanks again.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinaevere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

Common Guide Drop Related Questions(FAQ):

FAQ - If you are new (or a vet with a few questions) look here SECOND! (After reading the above!)

Q: What Are Penny Guides?
A: Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Q: Do all guides from all stores drop at the same time?
A: No. While most chains have nationwide drops within their own store (as in every BB will have the same drops coast to coast), not every different chain drops at the same time (what drops at BB is NOT necessarily dropped at GS). When in doubt, check post TWO for drop info.

Q: I found a penny guide and a clerk denied me! I'ma report 'em!
A: Whoa, hold your horses there, pardner! First of all, not a question. Second, just because something is on the shelf, the clerk does NOT have to sell you that item. Most stores are PRIVATE property and as such can deny you just about anything they want - including a sale. The best advice is to not be rude, not be arrogant, and just try hard to get them to have pity on you.

Q: Why don't the clerks want to sell me their penny guides? Aren't they just throwing them away?
A: As stated above, the stores are ordered by the publisher to trash the guides, and are then given credit for those guides. If they don't do this, the publisher won't give them the credit - it's like losing a sale. On the employee level, selling a penny guide can sometimes get them in trouble (or even fired!) I know it seems silly, but this is their job we're talking about! Respect the man (or woman) behind the counter and you'll get a lot more guides than otherwise!

Q: Should I just ask if the store has penny guides then?
A: No, since that denotes that you have some insider information as to the runnings of these businesses.

Q: What if the clerk wants to know how I know so much about guide drops?
A: If asked where you got your info about guides that pennied, simply say either 'the internet' or 'a friend of mine told me they're on clearance'.

Q: But clerks will know what a penny guide is, right? I can talk to them like anyone else here...
A: Never use the word pennied to ANY store clerks unless you have built up a good rapport with them. Even then, it may seem a little fishy if you know more about their shop than they do.

Q: Are guides labeled as a penny on the shelf?
A: Sometimes. Most times, no. GS seems to label everything that gets a price drop, so often times guides will be stickered. But even so, they most likely won't sell them to you. A sticker does not mean 'have to sell'.

Q: I tried to buy a guide that this thread said was pennied and it didn't ring up as such! What gives?
A: Either 1) Our source was wrong (this rarely happens and is usually verified a FEW times within maybe an hour of posting), or 2) The clerk changed the price. It's usually number 2.

Q: What's the easiest way to get penny guides? This sounds like TONS of work!
A: Best Buy is probably the best place to get guides, followed by GameStop, GameCrazy, Toys R Us and then Blockbuster. From what I've seen though, probably 95% of guides that people get are snagged at BB - the rest come from the other stores. But it never hurts to try!

Q: Has there been a drop recently?
A: If you are asking this question you didn't fully understand the OP - go back and read it once more. When a drop happens, it will be posted, and then placed in the second post - trust us.

Q: How do you guys know so much about penny guides?
A: We sometimes have inside sources with the information from the stores themselves; other times, fellow CAGS just like you or me simply take suspected guides to the register and ask them to ring them up, to check their prices. Feel free to do this yourself, and help give back to the community by telling us what you find! However, DON'T ask "Has anyone checked XXX lately?", unless you are in the right thread (discussion area).

Thanks to GrilledWitOnions for creating the above FAQ, which should eliminate the need for such questions popping up in the thread from this point on out.
xD game stores actually accept game guides for trade in credit?
Electronics Boutique(before being absorbed by Gamestop) used to take them in trade for $1-2 each at one point. The only other option you might have is if a used book/game store in your area takes them in or you happen to have a store called Half Price Books in your area.

Otherwise you're SOL and bound to be stuck with them forever.:bomb:

Speaking of which, where is Mike Toole? I haven't seen him post in this thread today, which is unusual!
Iwhich case, you learn to build guide thrones and forts! ;)
I thought about doing that when I had about 500-600 guides or so, but instead I ended up dumping the majority of them on the local shop for $.25-$1.00 each. Most weren't worth crap anyway, so it was nice to get the room back that those things took up. Of course, now that room is taken up by that metal rack I got for free and loaded up with the game cases I bought up from Hollywood Video.

I used to have a shitload of guides in those plastic storage totes, but I lent the totes to a friend when they were moving and never got them back.:bomb:
Oh, random tidbit: my receipt from my first success today was 2 ft long approximately. :D
Did Chapel Hill actually have guides and allow them to be sold?

This sucks finally a drop and I am on Vacation in Orlando. I don't think I'll have time to hit any BB down here . Hopefully when I get back to CT I'll have some luck but that won't be until Saturday.

Sure. If you bought more than 40 guides in one go, please show me up. :D

Come on guys. Not here. Go back and do it on chat roulette like you two always do. ;)

Another one to add to the list:

Little Big Planet Super Book (Has the GOTY & PSP versions in one guide)

Also picked up:
Singularity
Red Steel 2
Alan Wake LE
Crackdown 2
Dead to Rights: Retribution

My Best Buy had them sitting on the bottom in a pile by the SG's all labeled for a penny (Just wish they would hide them more...)

Still need Bioshock II LE & GOW 3 LE, but I can wait to see if the regular editions go in the future *crosses fingers*
Are you serious? One of my besybuys had that and thats one I was waiting to drop. I need to go back tomorrow.

When I went this morning, the lady claimed GOW was $35. After reading the posts here, I went back tonight and they still had it. I got it for a penny. Someone had cleaned out the rest of the guides but left this one for some reason as well as leaving the other Alan Wake CE. I picked up that, too, to try to trade for Bioshock 2. Amazingly, the cashier said someone bought all 22 Bakugan guides in one transaction. I guess tomorrow I gotta look for Bioshock 2 and now the Little Big Planet guide since that is supposedly a penny.

Actually I think it's called Little Big Planet Super Book, but I put it in as Big Book for now, pending someone confirming it tomorrow.

Thanks for the addition to the list, Joe Fongul.

Wow 22 is so extreme. I hope I run into one some day holding his giant stack. I wouldn't be afraid to call him out in front of the cashier. I went to my local BB and got 1 GoW LE copy.

Damn the LittleBigPlanet SuperBook woulda definitely been a good pickup...

Ill go back tomorrow. Also another potential drop could be God of War Collection? Ill check it out tomorrow at my store.

DAMNIT!!! The one day that I choose to work overtime until midnight (9am-12 midnight) there is a drop.

Ah well I'm taking my daughter to BB in the morning & hope to find @ least a few guides! I hope I hit the motherload because my store had @ least 20 of these guides on the list this past saturday. If @ least get 1 I'll be happy tho.
Any why do these fuckbiscuits think that Modnation Racers is a PSP game?
Actually I believe it is both a PSP and a PS3 game.

You can change it to Super. I would have looked at the guide to confirm the title, but my wife stole the guide from me as soon as I got home ;)
Any why do these fuckbiscuits think that Modnation Racers is a PSP game?
There is a PSP version of modnation. The guide covers both versions if I recall correctly.

None of these guides are showing up in the inventory locator, so I'm gonna assume is because they were pulled already & cleared out of inventory. However I also know that if they have less than 3 of an item in stock, history would indicate that they may still have some left even it's shows OOS.

Ah well...it's on my way to Target tomorrow to look for clearance items. It would be sweet to pick up Bioshock 2 CE guide & the game for less than $10!

:applause: I thought it was super, but I wasn't 100% sure. All I know is that I've missed out on getting it a couple times for cheap now. I still have the vanilla edition of the guide that doesn't cover the GOTY edition and I paid MSRP for that since I figured I'd never find it once it dropped(and I was right).

During our lunch break, my co-worker and I drove to five different BestBuy.

We each picked up:

2x AW Bundle
2x GoW UE
2x BS2 LE

I didn't bother picking up the rest. Some of the guides that I saw were Alpha Protocol, Star Wars, ModNation, Crackdown 2, Iron Man 2, pretty much everything on the list. This was at Lakewood, CA, Compton, CA, Downey, CA, and Cerritos, CA. OH YEAH, do not go to the one in Long Beach, CA. I saw one of their employees pulling them off the shelves and was told not to sell them.

Crossing my finger! I hope the next drop would include the Zelda Collector's Edition (Green hardback cover) and Mass Effect 2 (hardback cover) guides. I saw a gang of them. At least 5-10 of them at each store.
Argh I go and there's no GOW3 CE guides left anymore. Cashier said some guy came and bought all 20 of them.....goddamn hoarders.
Maybe he ran outta gas on the way home. ;)

Was able to get at least 1 of every guide. One store was fully stocked. The two other BB I went to they clearly tried to pull the penny guides but there were a few straglers in the aisles that they missed.

Very happy to see a guide pull today, glad to see they still exist :)
Maybe he ran outta gas on the way home. ;)
Hopefully. I mean come on. 20 of the same guide? Really? Really?

Wow, I wish I made it for those drops, I've had more luck months after drops with finding guides than I do the day of drops.

Any chance one of those over 10+ would be for sale for a nice price? I'd definitely like one to keep sealed next to the one I have now.

It's nice to see everyone getting guides again. Makes me miss the times I would go to various Best Buys and grab as many as I could to help CAGs. Speaking of which, anyone care to help a fellow U.S. Soldier out? I am deployed and guides like this help me pass the time while I am away from home and the family.

I went to the Best Buy in Bloomington, IN yesterday evening and all they had was about 4 copies of The Force Unleashed Guide on the bottom shelf. I picked up one since I was already there. They made a comment about the price but didn't give me any trouble. As I was leaving I overheard the cashier tell someone that they pennied out a bunch of guides and that they were back in the warehouse. I briefly thought about going back in and asking another associate to look in the warehouse for me, but decided I didn't want anything that badly =)

Oh well, I've gained CAG wisdom and will go earlier next time.
Struck out twice today. THe Sidney Marcus store in Atlanta only has a Sabouteur guide from the last drop and the Pleasant Hill store has a Bowser Inside Story guide. Left em both.
Forgot to mention that Pleasant Hill has out 15 Bakugan guides as well.

So I'm assuming the regular editions of Bioshock 2, Alan Wake, and GoW 3 are all still full priced right? My store still had a few of those, but they're pretty good about pulling pennied stuff.

Also, where is the link to the SKU checker? I can never find it when I need it.
actually, all the undercutters are awesome. Since they kill the market and if you miss out on a guide drop, you can get most guides for $5, which is worth it if you want it and you don't to waste gas.

I certainly don't feel sorry for the resellers on here who pick up every guide.
I can't believe I am saying this, BUT...

I agree with confoosious.

Went back today and the LittleBigPlanet Super Book was pulled off the shelf either yesterday after I left or this morning before opening. Wish I knew about it when I originally went yesterday, would have been nice to have.

Here's to February's drop, hopefully we'll get some insider info the day before the drop so we can stash guides or it doesn't end up being a pull.

I knew there was going to be a drop tomrrow, just based on the fact that I was out of state and Murphy's Law likes to plague me as a hobby. Nevertheless, I talked to someone at work, finagled a ride, and went today with my fingers crossed. Everything was pulled. Sonofabitch. Thankfully, I knew at least two locations where extra copies of guides were stored/hidden (probably from me), so I went and found a clerk to talk to about checking for it. She thought I was talking about actual games (they keep extras of those there too), so when she realized I wasn't, she passed me off to someone more knowledgeable on the subject. I asked her if she would check for me, and she happily obliged, and pulled out a stack of guides fro m this drop. Nothing really what I was hoping to get, all the HCs were gone, but I got a lot of Force Unleashed, Bakugon, and Pokemon Platinum. As I was paying I remembered the second location, so I asked if she'd check there too. Again, happy to oblige. She goes back there, comes back a few minutes later with a crate full of guides from previous drops. They'd been holding back on me. While it had nothing from this drop, it had a 1000 hint book, lots of Halo WArs, a few Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Sky, SvRaw 2010,Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, Scribblenauts, Madden 10, Fallout 3, and a single Bowser's Inside Story. I didn't know about the LittleBigPlanet book though, so I have to go back tomorrow.

Overall, a good day.

And to anyone who couldn't find any of the ones I listed, if I got more than one copy of it, I'm happy to help you if you're willing to help me with some I missed.
