Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread XI

Status
Not open for further replies.
First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

Useful Information(and links):

PLEASE keep ALL trade requests in there or PM's. Thank you.

Reduced Price Guide Discussion Thread(KEEP ALL DISCUSSION NOT RELATED TO GUIDE DROPS HERE!!!):

http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=169252

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you. Please, whenever possible, use RED font to make the drop info stand out. Thanks again.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Amazon
Barnes&Noble

Strategyguides.net
ToysRUs

Thanks to floormat, Guinaevere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

Common Guide Drop Related Questions(FAQ):

FAQ - If you are new (or a vet with a few questions) look here SECOND! (After reading the above!)

Q: What Are Penny Guides?
A: Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Q: Do all guides from all stores drop at the same time?
A: No. While most chains have nationwide drops within their own store (as in every BB will have the same drops coast to coast), not every different chain drops at the same time (what drops at BB is NOT necessarily dropped at GS). When in doubt, check post TWO for drop info.

Q: I found a penny guide and a clerk denied me! I'ma report 'em!
A: Whoa, hold your horses there, pardner! First of all, not a question. Second, just because something is on the shelf, the clerk does NOT have to sell you that item. Most stores are PRIVATE property and as such can deny you just about anything they want - including a sale. The best advice is to not be rude, not be arrogant, and just try hard to get them to have pity on you.

Q: Why don't the clerks want to sell me their penny guides? Aren't they just throwing them away?
A: As stated above, the stores are ordered by the publisher to trash the guides, and are then given credit for those guides. If they don't do this, the publisher won't give them the credit - it's like losing a sale. On the employee level, selling a penny guide can sometimes get them in trouble (or even fired!) I know it seems silly, but this is their job we're talking about! Respect the man (or woman) behind the counter and you'll get a lot more guides than otherwise!

Q: Should I just ask if the store has penny guides then?
A: No, since that denotes that you have some insider information as to the runnings of these businesses.

Q: What if the clerk wants to know how I know so much about guide drops?
A: If asked where you got your info about guides that pennied, simply say either 'the internet' or 'a friend of mine told me they're on clearance'.

Q: But clerks will know what a penny guide is, right? I can talk to them like anyone else here...
A: Never use the word pennied to ANY store clerks unless you have built up a good rapport with them. Even then, it may seem a little fishy if you know more about their shop than they do.

Q: Are guides labeled as a penny on the shelf?
A: Sometimes. Most times, no. GS seems to label everything that gets a price drop, so often times guides will be stickered. But even so, they most likely won't sell them to you. A sticker does not mean 'have to sell'.

Q: I tried to buy a guide that this thread said was pennied and it didn't ring up as such! What gives?
A: Either 1) Our source was wrong (this rarely happens and is usually verified a FEW times within maybe an hour of posting), or 2) The clerk changed the price. It's usually number 2.

Q: What's the easiest way to get penny guides? This sounds like TONS of work!
A: Best Buy is probably the best place to get guides, followed by GameStop, GameCrazy, Toys R Us and then Blockbuster. From what I've seen though, probably 95% of guides that people get are snagged at BB - the rest come from the other stores. But it never hurts to try!

Q: Has there been a drop recently?
A: If you are asking this question you didn't fully understand the OP - go back and read it once more. When a drop happens, it will be posted, and then placed in the second post - trust us.

Q: How do you guys know so much about penny guides?
A: We sometimes have inside sources with the information from the stores themselves; other times, fellow CAGS just like you or me simply take suspected guides to the register and ask them to ring them up, to check their prices. Feel free to do this yourself, and help give back to the community by telling us what you find! However, DON'T ask "Has anyone checked XXX lately?", unless you are in the right thread (discussion area).

Thanks to GrilledWitOnions for creating the above FAQ, which should eliminate the need for such questions popping up in the thread from this point on out.

I asked them what guides they may have in the back and they printed out a multi sheet list for me. It's definitely YMMV if you can get an employee to print one up and let you look at it, since I think it's only done for inventory purposes and not really supposed to be available to the public.

well never tried this before but decided what the hell its just cardboard boxes and broken game cases. so after no luck at 4 gamestops...one of the gamestops i go to regularly that manager wont give out the guides i decided lets try dumpster diving..long story short i came out with a TON of display lunchbox's for pokemon heartgold/soulsilver also got about 15 guides...
listed notables all in new shape as were just sitting in box:
phantasy star 0 x2
nostalgia x2
silent hill shattered memories x2
street fighter 4
fable 2 dlc x3
rest are just junk ones like saw,jak and daxter and wolfenstein and a couple of others.

for me, i seem to strike out at BB for penny guides, but can get them at my local GS. last weekend, i picked up the following at GS:

star ocean: the lost hope
muramasa: demon blade
jak & daxter: the lost frontier

:applause: I know I've thought about it, but I've never brought myself to seek out the store's trash and rummage through it. Definitely a CHEAP Ass gamer! Bravo sir!

New to this thread, I take it??
The one mall up in CT(just over NY state line along I-84) was a friggin' gold mine about 4 years ago.

They gave me a print out of guides they supposedly had in stock and I counted no less than 275 guides with .01 next to the title.

Unfortunately, after I started salivating and rummaging through one of the numerous bins they had out on the floor with guides stacked haphazardly underneath it one of the clerks came over and told me they were limiting me to TEN guides.:bomb:

I haven't been back there since, but if they still have all of those old ones in their stockroom and haven't pulled/destroyed any since then, that place could very well be the motherlode.

EDIT: It was the Danbury Fair Mall and the Gamestop/EB Games inside the mall.
I'll have to check it out next time I am in the area and post my findings.
I walked out with around 271 guides.
That's just crazy. I have a little more than half of that and the space they take up is ridiculous. I'm guessing it took about 10 trips to get all those to your car.

NICE:applause:
I have tried at 3 different gs's and no luck. I am starting to wonder if they truly sell everything or simply dump it. Once again, :applause: you the man!

Just got back from a GS that I don't frequent very often and was able to score a couple of the Mario beanies, one of each kind. They were behind the counter and when I politley asked if I was able to purchase one the kind lady said "here, take a couple for free"...sweet...I wil definitely be going back there. Also picked up Nostalgia and Fable II DLC. Alas, there were no Dragon Age Origin CE's in stock.

I went into a local GS earlier today to pick up a few things and saw nothing from this drop aside from a lone Overlord guide from way back when (it's not even in the OP, so talk about under-the-radar). I went up to check out and asked the employee if he had any copies of the Fable guide in stock, as I just got Fable 2 in the mail from Goozex and have been waiting to get a guide before I begin.

While the GS didn't have any of the Fable 2's in stock, he actually said he would drop off his own copy because he didn't want it anymore. I'll be picking the guide up on Thursday!

I've done a lot of shopping at GS over the years and there have been some ups and downs. Getting an employee to pass off a guide of their own on their free will is pretty high up on the props ladder. I definitely will be going back to that location in the future! Goes to show how far being sociable and talking games with the employees can take you.

I went to a GS that I rarely go to and was able to pick up a Dragon's Age CE guide. The clerk was willing to let me have the guide in exchange for a pre-order. So I pre-ordered FFXIII and was on my way. I wish every GS employee was this savvy. In the end, we both came out ahead.
I'll have to check it out next time I am in the area and post my findings.
Let me know what you find, since I don't think I've ever seen a store with that many penny guides supposedly in stock. If they still have all of those plus ones from every drop since....

You'd probably need a fuckin' U-Haul truck to lug them all out with.

I know that GameStop can sometimes pile up these pennied out guides instead of throwing them out after a few hours/days but I can't help but think that they had to throw at least some of those out at some point after getting bad enough. They do need to make room for all of the crappy games they get traded in :D

True. Like the model 39001 PS2 I looked at tonight, which had a controller that looked like it was gnawed on by a dog.

Went into a TRU recently and looked at their guides section. Didn't think they pennied until I checked Thread X. However, the last drop listed was back in 8/08. Any ideas why they drop so infrequently since they bother to penny at all? Or is it that no-one ever think to check (like me)? :dunce: Saw a SMGalaxy softcover there (pennied 7/08), so maybe it's worth going back to check others.

I've done it a few times with great success. I intercepted an employee theft or error in that I found the GTA4 guide amongst the penny guides. Biggest haul was 70+ guides. Some of which I should have left in there (most actually...). As long as it's clean (for a dumpster) I say, do it up. Hope there's no food places near by.

I found a ton of preorder codes a few days ago. No Mass Effect 2 ones though. I've found posters and other cool things.
That's what happened with me in Springfield(PA) the one time. I was on my way to Atlantic City with my then gf and I stopped at the Best Buy there. They had drops going back roughly a year or so and multiples of each.:)

That's how people are getting pennied guides since most GS has tightened their arse?

A former friend of mine on here always told me about hitting up the dumpsters behind the Gamestops that tightened up on letting guides go for a penny.

But the closest ones to me with possible external dumpsters are near a tattoo shop(bleh) and a Subway restaurant.

So yeah....I don't think I'd wanna risk dumpster diving in either on the slim chance they didn't obliterate their guides cuz knowing my luck they probably religiously tear them in two and/or mutilate the covers.
LOL Point taken. But I guess I have no one but myself to blame for them cracking down so damn hard, since I used to always just walk in with a cart to BB and just clear out everything the morning of a drop locally. Same deal with Gamestop, as I used to walk out with around 50 guides(sometimes per store)till I bumped into that DM the one time.

But I won't rehash that story, even though I still think his response was hilarious. I'm still shocked I wasn't blackballed for that.

Nice score at GS:

Dragon Age Origins CE
Nostalgia
Phantasy Star 0
Prototype
SWFU
Mini Ninjas

Also, picked up a LBP sticker book at another GS on Monday.

Umm, wow. I just picked this hardback book up last month at my local book store for $8. I'm seeing completed listings on Ebay around $100. Is it really that valuable?

Touche. But ya gotta admit that you STILL made out like a friggin' bandit in that trade deal(10 or so guides, including hardcovers for 2 common ones).

But that's why I seperated my 'better' guides from the dreck now and have them in two seperate places, with the common ones going for $2 each(plus shipping) and the 'better' ones being $5 each(plus shipping)and the REALLY good ones(HL:RTB, etc) being TRADE ONLY!! now.

Found at BB:

Killzone 2
Mirror's Edge (Studio Series Guide)
inFamous
Wolfenstein
Fallout 3 (Non-CE)
Gears of War 2
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Ghostbusters
Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe
Mario Kart Wii

I don't have them in front of me, but I can get more info about them later. Didn't find any Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction or Resistance: Fall of Man guides yet. That's where I want to spend my two cents.

Had a job interview, so afterwards I checked out a BB I hadn't been to before and picked up:

F.E.A.R. 2
Godfather 2
Pikmin
Resident Evil 5 CE

After I left I realized lord of the rings conquest was also pennied. I have to go that area next week, so hopefully it'll still be there. The cashier just wondered why items rung up at a penny as she bagged em for me. :)

I also hit up a mall to return white knight chronicles at GS (I've come to the conclusion I'm not going to pay full price for any game, even if it is store credit) and found a Sims 3 guide. Brought it up to the counter and he looked at it, bagged it and said it's free, have a great day. My first GS penny guide score.

There are a few additional drops that may have happened at Gamestop last week. These are guides that recently fell off the website:

Ghostbusters
NCAA Football 2010
Wolfenstein

I had a great haul today.Let me begin . I stop by 1 GS that I have scored at before. No parking in the front so I parked in the back. This store has a front and back entrance. No luck in the store but on the way back to my truck I see their dumpster and damn all u other cags for putting the thought in my head with your post. But I decide to look inside it was fairly clean as dumpsters go only used by GS I found a Fable 2 DLC guide and 5 pc games with case and manuals .
They were: Dirt,Demigod,Spore ,Ages of Empire III complete collection and Aion.
Barely any scracthes only all a little damp from the light snow from the day before. I don't really play pc games but my wife and Dad do.I saw some other stuff used controllers and such but I was leary of them. The games had field destroy stickers on the cases.
I also stopped by the Danbury Fair mall GS which IAmTheCheapestGamer mention He score in the past at. I pick of the rack Nostalgia,Champions Online,Dragon Quest V and Last Remnant , I go to pay the guy rings them up and ask me how I knew about them. I just say I found out on the internet. We chat for a minute or 2 and he goes you want some more and I go sure . He picks up a pile from behind the couter and tells me just to take them all. I get 2 -codes and cheats fall 2009, 1 ghostbusters, 1- mc vs dc, 1-mini nijas, 1- tmnt smash up, 1-left for dead and 4- The sims 3.
Thanks to all the cags who introduced me to the new sport of GS dumpster divig and to IAmTheCheapestGamer for mentioning the Danbury mall GS. Guess I should get into the trading aspect now.

Whoa. They dumped Aion into the dumpster? If I knew how clean/dirty the dumpsters are by the two GS stores that I know have external ones I'd go and try to find a copy of that. My one buddies' bro-in-law is HUGE into MMO's(huge WOW player), so a free copy of Aion would be insane to hand him.

And you're welcome, Wooz. I just wish I could've scored all the ones they had when I was there that last time.

If you decide that copy of Aion isn't for you or your family, let me know, since it's still coming up on the site so it might have been pulled in error.

I don't have them in front of me, but I can get more info about them later. Didn't find any Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction or Resistance: Fall of Man guides yet. That's where I want to spend my two cents.
Thanks, but I think all of these dropped a long time ago.
:hot: You found a Mario Kart and Zelda:Twilight Princess? Are there BB's in Mexico. These guides are over 2 years old!
Twilight Princess at least the white cover one only dropped recently.
