Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread XI

First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

Reduced Price Guide Discussion Thread(KEEP ALL DISCUSSION NOT RELATED TO GUIDE DROPS HERE!!!):

http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=169252

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you. Please, whenever possible, use RED font to make the drop info stand out. Thanks again.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinaevere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

Common Guide Drop Related Questions(FAQ):

FAQ - If you are new (or a vet with a few questions) look here SECOND! (After reading the above!)

Q: What Are Penny Guides?
A: Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Q: Do all guides from all stores drop at the same time?
A: No. While most chains have nationwide drops within their own store (as in every BB will have the same drops coast to coast), not every different chain drops at the same time (what drops at BB is NOT necessarily dropped at GS). When in doubt, check post TWO for drop info.

Q: I found a penny guide and a clerk denied me! I'ma report 'em!
A: Whoa, hold your horses there, pardner! First of all, not a question. Second, just because something is on the shelf, the clerk does NOT have to sell you that item. Most stores are PRIVATE property and as such can deny you just about anything they want - including a sale. The best advice is to not be rude, not be arrogant, and just try hard to get them to have pity on you.

Q: Why don't the clerks want to sell me their penny guides? Aren't they just throwing them away?
A: As stated above, the stores are ordered by the publisher to trash the guides, and are then given credit for those guides. If they don't do this, the publisher won't give them the credit - it's like losing a sale. On the employee level, selling a penny guide can sometimes get them in trouble (or even fired!) I know it seems silly, but this is their job we're talking about! Respect the man (or woman) behind the counter and you'll get a lot more guides than otherwise!

Q: Should I just ask if the store has penny guides then?
A: No, since that denotes that you have some insider information as to the runnings of these businesses.

Q: What if the clerk wants to know how I know so much about guide drops?
A: If asked where you got your info about guides that pennied, simply say either 'the internet' or 'a friend of mine told me they're on clearance'.

Q: But clerks will know what a penny guide is, right? I can talk to them like anyone else here...
A: Never use the word pennied to ANY store clerks unless you have built up a good rapport with them. Even then, it may seem a little fishy if you know more about their shop than they do.

Q: Are guides labeled as a penny on the shelf?
A: Sometimes. Most times, no. GS seems to label everything that gets a price drop, so often times guides will be stickered. But even so, they most likely won't sell them to you. A sticker does not mean 'have to sell'.

Q: I tried to buy a guide that this thread said was pennied and it didn't ring up as such! What gives?
A: Either 1) Our source was wrong (this rarely happens and is usually verified a FEW times within maybe an hour of posting), or 2) The clerk changed the price. It's usually number 2.

Q: What's the easiest way to get penny guides? This sounds like TONS of work!
A: Best Buy is probably the best place to get guides, followed by GameStop, GameCrazy, Toys R Us and then Blockbuster. From what I've seen though, probably 95% of guides that people get are snagged at BB - the rest come from the other stores. But it never hurts to try!

Q: Has there been a drop recently?
A: If you are asking this question you didn't fully understand the OP - go back and read it once more. When a drop happens, it will be posted, and then placed in the second post - trust us.

Q: How do you guys know so much about penny guides?
A: We sometimes have inside sources with the information from the stores themselves; other times, fellow CAGS just like you or me simply take suspected guides to the register and ask them to ring them up, to check their prices. Feel free to do this yourself, and help give back to the community by telling us what you find! However, DON'T ask "Has anyone checked XXX lately?", unless you are in the right thread (discussion area).

Thanks to GrilledWitOnions for creating the above FAQ, which should eliminate the need for such questions popping up in the thread from this point on out.

i can confirm that EVERYTHING on the original list posted dropped.....the BB i went to today even had price tags of 1 cent listed on the shelf in front of the guides LOL so i had no problems buying all them shits!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SON-OF-A-- I missed it! all this news about a drop today and I had a busy evening after work :bomb:

well I think I could have only got Dissdia and maybe a couple of others..guess I'm going back to check tomorrow to see if they're still there. If not, there are going to be some bare looking shelves and endcaps around, so I'm hoping they left them!

Thanks too all of you that updated through out the day. i was able to pickup several of the guides. Hope to pick up more tomorrow. I passed on some earlier due to not knowing. i also price checked dragon age CE and it was 35.

Now the million dollar question is will more drop tomorrow?
I actually work at Best Buy and lame excuse for what they told me for not selling it just pissed me off. (don't work at this one.) I then proceeded to call customer service and complain, as I know all managers at this Best Buy are on their last leg and about to get fired.
Yea I work at target and ive seen the "chewing out" we get for selling salvage or better said leaving it on the floor. Id agree with you I went to one of my BB purposely so that this one manager who has been a significant douche last few times I was in there would get what id call the equivalent of a stern talking too lol
i hate to do this but can someone tell me what page to find the original list on ?
Pages are meaningless because everybody can set how many posts appear on a page.

It seems like IATCG has been working hard to keep the posts at the start of the thread updated; start there.

Durrrrrrrr. READ THE FIRST COUPLE OF POSTS(aka PAGE ONE)!!!:bomb::bomb::bomb:
Well, looks I get mostly screwed out of this one, as I've had no chance to run to BB until tomorrow, if I'm lucky.
If your BB happens to be one that still has the guides out, of course. None of mine did.
sorry jeez last time i looked there it didnt have the new stuff
That's because I do this thing called sleeping and can't be here 24/7 to update the thread.;)

Of course, instead of just going 'does anyone have a centralized list for me', you could try doing a thing called READING and skim the last 3-5 pages of posts for the list. It's been mentioned often.
The COD Reflex edition is a softcover Wii version guide.

Please note it is a softback guide. Also, please note it is Wii edition only, and it's not got a "2" in it.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare Reflex

Its not MW2 its MW1 for the wii. They call it MW1:Reflex Edition. (It looks the same as CoD4 for the ps3 and 360.

On another note I was just wondering about Blockbuster and Game Crazy. Surely these must have had drops since the last time they were checked (last August). Are these places no longer pennying guides or something?
Thanks for clearing that up guys, I must have been confused with the CoD:MW2 Prestige edition guide that I saw tonight.

One local store here had all the guides pulled last weekend. The one that I scored guides at on Monday seemed to miss out on pulling the guides that dropped early Monday. They did pull most of what dropped today, except for GTAIV and some Tekken and Ratchet guides that they had near the checkout lanes. Not sure why they had guides there, but the fact that they were away from the other guides is probably why they didn't pull them.

Thanks as always to all who posted about the guide drops!

Some dumb noob named "xTraPointLess" just sent me a PM telling me he cleaned out a whole section of my city. Ok, thats good for you, but he didn't tell me which stores he at least hit up. He seems like a "slickdealer" with his bragging about it. If he at least say which stores specifically, I'd at least thank him and then tell him to go fuck himself for being an ass about it.

Sorry, buddy. Didn't mean to irritate you. I actually posted on the Guide Discussion Thread that I got like 5 guides total. That's all that was at the 3 BBs I went to. Sent you a follow-up PM before I saw this, sorry I got you all bothered. Was actually trying to help. Anyways, good luck.
Has the RaC: ACiT guide actually been found by anyone yet? I need to add it to my Insomniac collection and this would save my a lot of money.
Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time was one of the guides I saw with a 1 cent shelf label. So it is out there.
Before I go out tomorrow, has anyone checked the Germantown, MD and/or Rockville, MD BB's?
I checked out the ROckville BB (the one on Shady Grove Road) - I also checked the Gamestop nearby (Fallsgrove) and further north (the one by Lakeforest). I haven't tried the Germantown one (I assume you mean the one on Father Hurley, but usually it is MUCH better than my local bestbuy).

stopped at the BB in Dewitt, NY last night and picked up some of the guides that were confirmed but couldn't find any Ratchet & Clank and Prototype guides. Had to get manager approval, but as i was leaving I heard the manger tell someone on his little walkie talkie to go over and pull the guides. Just wanted to give a heads up to any other CAG's in Syracuse, NY.
Don't be a dick, man.
It's not being a dick. It's called getting sick of people wanting the info right under their friggin' noses and not wanting to hunt for the info for themselves. The second post has all of the drops for the past 6 months and the third post has a Wiki type post with all of the drops dating back to who knows how long ago(thanks again to perdition(troy for compiling it), so the info IS there if you just LOOK for it.

The info they were looking for was contained within the last 3-5 pages(going by 50 posts per page like I use though), so all they would have to do is skim those pages and look for the big list. It wasn't hard to find.

How do you know I'm not being serious?;) In all seriousness though, it does and has become quite a pain to see people asking shit that's been answered 1000x before though.

Those were some of my old stomping grounds when I would go to the auto auction up in Lafayette for work. I used to hit all the malls up that way within 2 hours or so. :D The Kmart up by the Shoppingtown Mall was like one outta the 1970's. They had a copy of Juiced 2 for PS3 the last time I was there and their clearance looked like it was untouched.

But you are right of course.

You will soon enough, you whippersnapper! Now, as IATCG says, get off my lawn! And leave those penny guides...

I'm still wondering why only NGS2 got pulled at my store. Does that guide/game have some special significance that I'm not aware of?

Well, I did get 6 of them from one of my local BB stores when I hit mine(and 4 are already spoken for:shock:)and I plan on hitting up my closest one again today when I go for my noon interview there. Hopefully the manager doing my interview doesn't get called over to approve my penny guide sale.

Then again, this was the same store that had guides pulled on Monday already, so I don't have my hopes set too high.

As for being cantankerous, I prefer the term irrascible, ya damn whippersnappers. And if yer gonna leave any guides on my front lawn, make sure they're copies of Tales Of Vesperia, HL2: Raising The Bar, Lost Odyssey, etc, etc.;) After all, I need something to offset my Social Security check those damned politicians keep taking chunks out of.

Like this thread is EVER on-topic anymore. I gave up a while ago with asking a mod to clean out off topic posts since it never helps. The only thing that still irks me are the people who ask questions covered in the first couple of posts or they could find the answer to by skimming the last 3-6 pages of posts.

You'd think people have lives or something with how many times they forgo looking for answers and just repeat the questions.

another CAG was saying that this was in fact, 'out of system' and he couldn't buy one the other day, what happened for you? ring up at full price? only one store in the Houston area has these left I think..

edit: my god, my t-mobile gamer pic is horrible! sorry..

Actually, i think that is a $20 word right there! Anyone other than me sorry I used that stupid line yet? Not asking you IATCG, we know where you stand, even if you did use it yourself.

Anywho, I am off to another Best Buy to see what they may/may not have left for a penny!

Wren, when you went to the one in brandon, did they pull all of the ones that now dropped? Or just the first 4-5 that dropped on monday? Just don't wanna waste my lunch if they're def gone. Thanks

I used the price scanner, and it rang up as full price (not out of system)

^^assume they're not going to have it! this is a very strange drop..check behind other guides, look all over..

and yeah, maybe start w/ a couple guides to test out the cashier, if they let it slide, or think its cool. say, "I want to check some more.." or "I want to grab a few more for friends." nothing wrong w/ that. A big pile is risky, don't need a manager coming over in a situation like this..
So do you guys just take a big 'ol stack of them to the register or what? I've bought 1 before, but never so many at a time.(Assuming they have it)
At my local store that is 90% of the time cool with it, I usually bring around 15-18 guides on average when they have them (that's all I feel like carrying and don't want to get the cart). One store further out, through, I don't have high hopes for. Tried to get four Brutal Legend guides Monday but the lady would only let me have one. So it varies, might be better to just test the waters with a few till you know how each store is.

Darth, they have nothing except a light blue code book that may or may not be that cheat code book that confirmed to drop. I couldnt see a year on it and dont really care that much so didnt dig through it. Also, they possibly had a champions, but again, I didnt positively confirm that the one I saw is the on in this new list. Had I known you were interested before I left, I would have made sure to check. Again though, they definately dont have anything else on the list.

Everything was pulled at the Woodbridge NJ location. I havn't checked the East Brunswick location (anyone checked?) but I am looking for GTA IV and Prototype.

I went way far out of my way during lunch to a best buy I've had luck with in the past. I could only find a single Tekken 6 from this drop behind a bunch of other guides. But they also had a bunch of stuff from really old drops like x-men origins wolverine, killzone 2, and terminator salvation.

Hey Lox, which best buy do you work at?

got lucky! was able to grab the last copy of FF Dissidia. Checked another, and they were all gone. A rep asked if he could help me. I said, "yeah, show me where the penny ones are!" he just smiled and walked away..again, Houston CAGs don't bother with Katy FWY @ Bingle, or 290 and Hollister.

Indeed.

And so far it's looking like all my local BB"s are picked clean. Thank god for the trade thread. At least when I work tomorrow I can look around to see if any store in the district has 'em.

Man, I wish I could land a Dissidia. Thats the main guide I've been looking for during this drop but all Ive found are Warhammer Online, Saw, and Prince of Persia :(
