Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread XI

First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

Reduced Price Guide Discussion Thread(KEEP ALL DISCUSSION NOT RELATED TO GUIDE DROPS HERE!!!):

http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=169252

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you. Please, whenever possible, use RED font to make the drop info stand out. Thanks again.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinaevere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

Common Guide Drop Related Questions(FAQ):

FAQ - If you are new (or a vet with a few questions) look here SECOND! (After reading the above!)

Q: What Are Penny Guides?
A: Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Q: Do all guides from all stores drop at the same time?
A: No. While most chains have nationwide drops within their own store (as in every BB will have the same drops coast to coast), not every different chain drops at the same time (what drops at BB is NOT necessarily dropped at GS). When in doubt, check post TWO for drop info.

Q: I found a penny guide and a clerk denied me! I'ma report 'em!
A: Whoa, hold your horses there, pardner! First of all, not a question. Second, just because something is on the shelf, the clerk does NOT have to sell you that item. Most stores are PRIVATE property and as such can deny you just about anything they want - including a sale. The best advice is to not be rude, not be arrogant, and just try hard to get them to have pity on you.

Q: Why don't the clerks want to sell me their penny guides? Aren't they just throwing them away?
A: As stated above, the stores are ordered by the publisher to trash the guides, and are then given credit for those guides. If they don't do this, the publisher won't give them the credit - it's like losing a sale. On the employee level, selling a penny guide can sometimes get them in trouble (or even fired!) I know it seems silly, but this is their job we're talking about! Respect the man (or woman) behind the counter and you'll get a lot more guides than otherwise!

Q: Should I just ask if the store has penny guides then?
A: No, since that denotes that you have some insider information as to the runnings of these businesses.

Q: What if the clerk wants to know how I know so much about guide drops?
A: If asked where you got your info about guides that pennied, simply say either 'the internet' or 'a friend of mine told me they're on clearance'.

Q: But clerks will know what a penny guide is, right? I can talk to them like anyone else here...
A: Never use the word pennied to ANY store clerks unless you have built up a good rapport with them. Even then, it may seem a little fishy if you know more about their shop than they do.

Q: Are guides labeled as a penny on the shelf?
A: Sometimes. Most times, no. GS seems to label everything that gets a price drop, so often times guides will be stickered. But even so, they most likely won't sell them to you. A sticker does not mean 'have to sell'.

Q: I tried to buy a guide that this thread said was pennied and it didn't ring up as such! What gives?
A: Either 1) Our source was wrong (this rarely happens and is usually verified a FEW times within maybe an hour of posting), or 2) The clerk changed the price. It's usually number 2.

Q: What's the easiest way to get penny guides? This sounds like TONS of work!
A: Best Buy is probably the best place to get guides, followed by GameStop, GameCrazy, Toys R Us and then Blockbuster. From what I've seen though, probably 95% of guides that people get are snagged at BB - the rest come from the other stores. But it never hurts to try!

Q: Has there been a drop recently?
A: If you are asking this question you didn't fully understand the OP - go back and read it once more. When a drop happens, it will be posted, and then placed in the second post - trust us.

Q: How do you guys know so much about penny guides?
A: We sometimes have inside sources with the information from the stores themselves; other times, fellow CAGS just like you or me simply take suspected guides to the register and ask them to ring them up, to check their prices. Feel free to do this yourself, and help give back to the community by telling us what you find! However, DON'T ask "Has anyone checked XXX lately?", unless you are in the right thread (discussion area).

Thanks to GrilledWitOnions for creating the above FAQ, which should eliminate the need for such questions popping up in the thread from this point on out.

nothing at my local best buy but mine is usually very good at pulling, New Super Mario Bro's. did ring up normal for me btw. and fallout game of the year is still full price too.
Can anyone confirm half off Spirit Tracks CE or NSMB guides? Interested, but sounds like YMMV.
Half off is almost always YMMV at Best Buy. So far, $9.99 has been the only reduced price I have seen system-wide. I did price Spirit Tracks CE and Halo ODST today and both rang up full price.

When guides are sold 'half off' or a certain percentage, they're usually YMMV. They require manager overrides, as they are the ones deciding which merchandise they need to eliminate.

I did post they were clearance. Thing is, they usually put stuff for discount before the guides drop. Its how they operate. Thats why I posted it.

Legitimate and useful post. I was responding to another who thought it might be universal.

I found a GS that still had Magna Carta 2, FF Dissidia, Fable 2 DLC and GoW2: All Fronts. Since I already own the other guides, I only tried and bought MC2. The guy was tripping out because I was getting LBP GotY and a guide for $6.xx. I might go back and try to pick up the rest for the trade list.

I did notice that this GS had signs up for "50% off select guides". The picture on the sign showed GoW collection, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, CoD Reflex, LBP Super Book and 2 others that I don't recall. I might have bit on KH but I really couldn't get in to the game and I've put it back into the ol' backlog for the time being. I'll pick up the guide when/if it pennies.

thanks for the tip emg28, might be worth looking to see if some GS's around here have that 50% Off sign up..wouldn't be opposed to paying $10ea for GoW Collection and LBP Super Book just to secure them..

$10 for a guide? Good lord. Are you nuts? LOL I've become spoiled. The most I'd pay for a single guide anymore is $5 and that's pushing it unless it has lotsa useful information in it.

haha, well yeah, I agree, those $4.98 Target clearance guides fit that bill, which I did pick up Halo Wars for after BB pulled that fast one on us w/ their last drop. However, I think LBP Super Book will go pretty quick, that thing is massive too! And to the normal person, 50% off is like, "OMG, I have to buy this now!" deplenishing the stock for when it pennies...so I'd rather be safe than sorry on that one...much rather have it for a penny or get it at BB, but the future is uncertain for that place, which sucks!!

Yeah only guide I would spend $5 on would be the Fallout 3 GOTY hardcover ( if there is even one )

Why yes, yes there is.;) Of course, I already have two of the softcover non-GOTY ones.:D Mind ya, I doubt I'll ever use them cuz I couldn't stand the game.

Not even a YMMV deal... just a one-shot one-store offer:

Saw the MW2 LE at BB on a clearance rack for $19.99
Probably gone by now.

I stopped by a GS that's in the middle of knowhere and scored big about 15 guides for the last few drops .The cashier was really cool .I did try Codes and Cheats Winter 2010 and it rung full price He was like u don't want this one and I said that I didn't. He said he's not suppose to give them to me and I told him I know . I told him some stores do and some don't. He was like I don't care I'm gong to give them to u Here's a bag. I BSed with him awhile and went on my way.
Saw a FF12 limited edition guide at one for 14.99. Hadn't seen one of those before.
LOL They used to have TONS of those lining the floor by the one guide shelf at the one GS around here. They had so many that they stacked them up and made another shelf for other guides from them.

Stopped by Gamestop today to look around (wish I had the list of pennied guides!) and I saw the Fallout GOTY hardcover and it was like $34.99 and my gf remarked that it would be nice if it got cheaper, and the GS guy quietly said "It'll probably get pennied out first," which was odd since I've never seen anyone mention the penny guides.

Anyways, there were 3 GTA 4 guides there, which have pennied according to the list, so I'll make sure to go back. The sticker said $9.99 so is there a possibility the store could have overridden the pennies at all?
So anyone have any ideas? Was the GTA 4 guide $9.99 before it pennied or could have the store overridden the penny value?
Call and ask for a price check.

Grand Theft Auto 4 is pennied. I just checked RSS. It must be a store price.
I've been checking every day I work for over a month and not found any new info. I'm not a huge message board guy so I really haven't popped in since I've had no news.
I did finally update my trade list.
Still have lots of work though. Just wanted to throw that out there...

I think the original question pertained to GameStop. Your answer applies to Best Buy, right?
anyone know where I could find a boderlands guide for cheap?
Try the guide trade thread for that. You'll have to skim through alot of posts to possibly find one someone that has it to trade though. The link to get there is in the first post of this thread.

You are better off to search the thread. :)

Oh yeah I guess it does. Sorry I tend to zone out at work.

Out of three gs I've visited I've only found 2 penny guides: Chinatown and crack in time. Both times they handed them over fee of charge unlike bb that goes through the whole paying bs

finally had some luck at a local BB. I think they sometimes clear them off the shelves but forget to throw them away. And then somebody notices them in the stock room a month later and puts them out on the shelves.

I went to Best Buy today to pick up WarioWare D.I.Y (it comes with 500 bonus points... a $10 reward zone cert) and used a $10 reward zone cert on it making it $25. While there, I looked at the guides. I saw a Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2. I wen to the register. I didn't say a word. Handed both to the cashier, she noticed it say .01, but didn't give a damn. She did giggle a little bit though. Anyway- score!

I keep finding the same fucking guide though. Grr~!!

Found a brutal legend guide at the Polaris BB in Columbus today.

Figured I'd stop by on my way back home from a Clippers game to get food and check Target and BB, and I found that. I also picked up a bag of robins eggs at Target for $.63 :D

(egg shaped Whoppers candy)
Has anyone checked any guides today? My BB stores are sans price checkers...
Going to work in an hour or two, I'll check what I can. If I don't post anything by 3, then most likely nothing dropped.

I was about to ask if anyone checked anything. It's kind of unusual that we didn't have anyone say 'did anything drop' this morning.

I guess many have given up on checking.

Thanks in advance, lox. Let us know as soon as possible, though I won't be home till later this afternoon, so it'll suck for me if stuff dropped since I won't be by a BB.

Hopefully they don't start trickling the drops to one or two like Gamestop has been doing sporadically as of late. But define 'good' ones cuz I think most of the LE/SE(Dragon Age/Bioshock 2/Mass Effect 2/etc) ones are missing from the site already.

Then again, I haven't checked the site's list of guides in a while, though I did use it yesterday to finish up my trade order. They have some sweet, sweet trade in prices on stuff.

I guess I meant Borderlands and Ass Creed II LE (still on the site). All the other ones you mentioned are the sweet ones.

I'm about to take drive over there now...

At 11:15AM, I scanned:

ME2 (both reg. and CE)
Dragon Age: O (CE)
Bioshock 2 (reg. and CE)

All rang up full price.

I wonder what's going on with BB? The last drop was hella wierd, and there hasn't been anything since. Very odd, and I really hope it isn't a sign that BB is drying up the way TRU did (I don't think anyone has gotten anything from there in years). GS is a crapshoot, but at least some people score from time to time.

Thanks for checking, shieryda. We should check to see if there's a pattern from last year's drop around this time to this years, so then we might have some idea when the next will be.

It seems like they follow the same pattern sometimes too, so if that's true then there will be no further drops till June now.

Hopefully by then my local BB employees will have forgotten that I cleaned out the store the last time.

I still think that my closest BB has a picture of me posted in some employees only or managers only area. I had a guy who I didn't recognize tell me "we've had problems with you before with this" when I tried to get free Nerf 'n' Strikes.

LOL I wonder if that's why I wasn't hired at BB. Maybe Galactic Command has me on a troublemaker list, since I still laugh at getting a $20 gift card that time when they had the $10 off Prima guides glitch that allowed guides already $10 to ring up FREE.

I also kinda snicker when I go in and find penny guides and bring them up, since it's a 50/50 chance I'll get denied.

That reminds me. I should check my closest one again and see if they finally removed the rest of those Prince Of Persia guides from the prior drop yet. They had something like 2-8 of them in with all of the other guides.

I should have replied that "it isn't my fault that your galactic command is staffed with Circuit City's rejects" or something of the sort. :p

The woman that always rings up my penny guides asked me "So you actually buy stuff from us sometimes, right?". I will now be able to confidently say "Yes". After all, I'm going to be buying an Ipod Touch with the gift card I got from Trading LBP... Which I got from GS credit from Nerfs... Which I got from BB for free... Which means they gave me my IPOD for... free... too... DAMN. I guess I'm still not buying anything from BB, really :)
