Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread XI

Status
Not open for further replies.
First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

Useful Information(and links):

Reduced Price Guide Discussion Thread(KEEP ALL DISCUSSION NOT RELATED TO GUIDE DROPS HERE!!!):

http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=169252

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you. Please, whenever possible, use RED font to make the drop info stand out. Thanks again.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinaevere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

Common Guide Drop Related Questions(FAQ):

FAQ - If you are new (or a vet with a few questions) look here SECOND! (After reading the above!)

Q: What Are Penny Guides?
A: Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Q: Do all guides from all stores drop at the same time?
A: No. While most chains have nationwide drops within their own store (as in every BB will have the same drops coast to coast), not every different chain drops at the same time (what drops at BB is NOT necessarily dropped at GS). When in doubt, check post TWO for drop info.

Q: I found a penny guide and a clerk denied me! I'ma report 'em!
A: Whoa, hold your horses there, pardner! First of all, not a question. Second, just because something is on the shelf, the clerk does NOT have to sell you that item. Most stores are PRIVATE property and as such can deny you just about anything they want - including a sale. The best advice is to not be rude, not be arrogant, and just try hard to get them to have pity on you.

Q: Why don't the clerks want to sell me their penny guides? Aren't they just throwing them away?
A: As stated above, the stores are ordered by the publisher to trash the guides, and are then given credit for those guides. If they don't do this, the publisher won't give them the credit - it's like losing a sale. On the employee level, selling a penny guide can sometimes get them in trouble (or even fired!) I know it seems silly, but this is their job we're talking about! Respect the man (or woman) behind the counter and you'll get a lot more guides than otherwise!

Q: Should I just ask if the store has penny guides then?
A: No, since that denotes that you have some insider information as to the runnings of these businesses.

Q: What if the clerk wants to know how I know so much about guide drops?
A: If asked where you got your info about guides that pennied, simply say either 'the internet' or 'a friend of mine told me they're on clearance'.

Q: But clerks will know what a penny guide is, right? I can talk to them like anyone else here...
A: Never use the word pennied to ANY store clerks unless you have built up a good rapport with them. Even then, it may seem a little fishy if you know more about their shop than they do.

Q: Are guides labeled as a penny on the shelf?
A: Sometimes. Most times, no. GS seems to label everything that gets a price drop, so often times guides will be stickered. But even so, they most likely won't sell them to you. A sticker does not mean 'have to sell'.

Q: I tried to buy a guide that this thread said was pennied and it didn't ring up as such! What gives?
A: Either 1) Our source was wrong (this rarely happens and is usually verified a FEW times within maybe an hour of posting), or 2) The clerk changed the price. It's usually number 2.

Q: What's the easiest way to get penny guides? This sounds like TONS of work!
A: Best Buy is probably the best place to get guides, followed by GameStop, GameCrazy, Toys R Us and then Blockbuster. From what I've seen though, probably 95% of guides that people get are snagged at BB - the rest come from the other stores. But it never hurts to try!

Q: Has there been a drop recently?
A: If you are asking this question you didn't fully understand the OP - go back and read it once more. When a drop happens, it will be posted, and then placed in the second post - trust us.

Q: How do you guys know so much about penny guides?
A: We sometimes have inside sources with the information from the stores themselves; other times, fellow CAGS just like you or me simply take suspected guides to the register and ask them to ring them up, to check their prices. Feel free to do this yourself, and help give back to the community by telling us what you find! However, DON'T ask "Has anyone checked XXX lately?", unless you are in the right thread (discussion area).

Thanks to GrilledWitOnions for creating the above FAQ, which should eliminate the need for such questions popping up in the thread from this point on out.

I wiould have no issues paying like $5 for s guide I wanted and I rarely get anything around me anymore but its still entertaining to read these posts...

My last score was a Bowsers inside story guide woohooo ;)

Every time I go to that bestbuy I see a lone Kingdom Hearts 358 days guide sitting there but I pass simply because I already got this bowser guide with no reason to have it...

No luck on the Gow III CE. GS i stopped at hadn't pulled them since i saw a Red Steel 2, but had no GoW III CE (They checked). Didn't bother trying to get Red Steel 2 either

Picked up a pair of Iron Man guides for free after finding 7-8 of them on the rack. Sadly they already threw out the GoW CE one(s). :(

The lone GoW III CE guide I saw was "already taken by another employee". Did manage to pick up one of everything else except for the Guinness Book :)wall: I actually was interested in this) and the DS guide

Swung by a GS here. I ... never ... have success here ... ! But, lo and behold, I see a stack of guides on the floor ... behind the register! :(

I go up to the guy and politely ask if they have any BFBC 2 guides (which I saw one of). He goes behind and hands it to me and says I can have it, that they have several that were marked as a penny. I ask 'what other ones?' and he shows me, then let's me have them all! I ended up with a copy of BFBC2, Red Steel, Iron Man 2, Guiness Book, 2 HM:SI, and two Modnation Racers. No luck on GOWIII. They had some DS pocket guides I passed on.

Even though he didn't ask, I put down a pre-order on the new COD Black Ops, to help him out, and he goes running to the back and comes back with a COD poster for me (which I didn't even realize came with the pre-order). Altogether, a wonderful store/experience!

Figures...El Hoardo has taken a job in the sanitation business. He's always one step ahead of us.

Yay, more guides I won't see except through CAG trades, 'cause they're at GS.

Good to know that we're getting some good ones this drop. Good luck to any CAG that's found some.

Went to my final GS after work. They'd already pulled the guides, but I spied a stack of ModNation Racers and Iron Man 2s behind the counter. The guys working gave me a ModNation when I asked about it (didn't care to ask about Iron Man). When I left, IATCG's post inspired me to to check the dumpster for yesterday's drops. Surprisingly, it was a success. I found a good number of Bad Company 2s and and a Red Steel 2. Not exactly how I expected to end the day, but a win is a win.

I found a GoW III CE guide at a local GS but it was sitting on the shelf behind the register. When I asked about it, the guy told me that someone already had dibs on it. I'm guessing it was one of the 2 employees working at the time. I also found a Modnation Racers and Red Steel 2 at another GS but there was a long line and I didn't want to wait.

You're not kidding... Back on July 4th Weekend I had a horrible run-in with El Hoardo or La Whoreda.

I went for a late night Burger King run and got, "Sorry we are all out of beef so we don't have any hamburgers."

So I decided to run up the road to Arby's and got, "Just to let you know, we are all out of beef."

I guess they both have to upkeep those cankles some how.

Lol, wow! Apparently you should just go Veggo MVP! ;)

I think the El Hoardo took all the GOW III CE guides here! :(

I found a store (that I've had good luck with before) that had a GOW CE and a Modnation - took them up to the counter and she says "Sorry we can't let you have these anymore, they're really cracking down on policy"

ON the bright side she said if they do relax the policy in the future to make sure I keep checking back because they recognize me and they'll make sure they save stuff for me.

Glass half full I guess

I too would pay $5 for a guide if they'd consider dropping them to that price before just pennying and dumpstering them.

I'm just shocked that Gamestop hasn't tried to adopt EB's old strategy of buying used guides from people for $.50-$1 a pop and reselling them in another section of each GS store. They would probably make some good money on them and could probably have someone affiliated with the company come in to snag all of the pennied guides to keep the profit in the company rather than just junking good merchandise.

That's how the stores in my area were for a while, but that was back when I was getting my 20-30 guides per store hauls and the employees were ringing them up like a normal transaction. All of the grabs I've managed to make lately from GS stores have just been them scanning them to take them out of the system and them handing me the guides.

I guess I should finally update the second and third posts, huh?

Thanks again to all who provided info about what dropped this time around. Without you guys verifying, this thread would be harder to keep updated.

EDIT: Second and third posts are updated with the drop info.

i tried two gamestops both already pulled. going to try the one that holds items for me today when i go to the bestbuy event for dragon quest 9.
LOL at dumpster diving..I was somewhat excited about IATCG's sudden venture into dumpster diving that I couldn't stop thinking about it. I just had visions of oversized GS plastic bags with so many guides they were ripping thru..So I went by the one store where the guy always overrides the price, sure enough, he was working, and all the guides were pulled! Make my exit and drive around to the back. At this point, I was pretty psyched and said I would get out of my truck, at least walk over to the dumpster and at least open the lid and peek in. Then I thought how great it was that I was wearing flip flops and may have to get physical. Open the lid, empty empty empty! The garbage truck grabbed all dem shits!!

Inspired by the tales of dumpster diving, I went to the largest GS in my area to take a look...and found that they actually put locks on to keep them shut!!! I'm not sure if it's because they're really paranoid about shameless dumpster divers, or because they happen to be located next to a major bookstore...

Wow, I scored. Thought there was no chance, but I got God of War 3 CE, Modnation Racers, and Harvest Moon Sunshine Islands. Not very interested in the Sunshine Islands guide though, so if anyone is interested in a guide swap PM me.

Stopped by last Thursday. Found Red Steel 2, GoWIII CE, Harvest Moon SI, and Modnation. Left Iron Man 2 on the shelf. Everything rang up full price, except Red Steel 2, which rang up the expected $0.01. Left with RS2.

yea...last i heard there was some government investigation into it. its an employee perk...they get to "try the games" or "borrow the games" that are new, and then bring them back and sell them as new when they were used.

its shady to say the least, and why i hate buying from them anything that isnt sealed

I actually saw a KH 358/2 and FF Crystal Bearers at a BB tonight, thought they might be on the list but couldn't figure out what I'd do with them. Is there usually someone out there who wants these things?

The funny part about that whole argument is that, based on the condition of the item, there is no way to prove that it has been "used" at all. Making the whole point moot.

Except of course on a whole philosophical level.
The employees probably wanted the last three for themselves and overrode the price.
Doubt it. He said that anything that rings up $0.01 should have been removed from the shelf, but since they didn't, to just give them all to me for free. The ones that rang up full price they put back on the rack.

Having said that...is there a difference between scanning the GS barcode tag on the front and the ISBN tag on the back? It's been a long while since I even tried to get anything at GS and I can't recall if that's an issue or not.

I think it doesn't matter if they scan the actual UPC on the back of the guide or the sticker they sometimes put on the front cover or spine. But I know that the UPC they scanned certainly made a difference at Best Buy during the drop in which the Warhammer Online guides dropped. When they scanned the front UPC, it came up $9,999.99, but when they scanned the normal UPC on the back cover it came up $.01 . Now that's a hell of a price difference.

Maybe the price on the back was what it was worth after reading it. That or it's like Russian Roulette not knowing what price you'd pay. ;)

I had a weird experience. I asked for the guide for MNR at one GS store, and the employee mumbled something to someone and then said we don't have anymore. Oh well, then I went to another store and the employee told me he had to rip off the cover to give to me for free. I didn't ask it for free. I guess it was a .01 one and he saw how low the price was.

Actually, that is GS policy to rip off the cover before giving the guides to customers. Some stores won't even let you have the guide at all, so at least you do get the guide, but I can understand where some folks(me) are irked by the coverless guides. Although that's cuz I usually just take them to trade here for stuff I want and I know a majority of other CAG's prefer stuff mint/complete.

I suppose, but this was the one and only time it happened in front of me.

If you don't want the cover ripped off, just offer to pay full price. Simple.

Penny guides are a mistake. Getting them at all is a huge bonus. Getting them mint (so people can trade and/or make money off selling them) is an absolute gift.

I did check several GS's around here right when the drop happened. Keeping with the new stricter DM rules in my area, every store was cleaned out, guides destroyed, immediately. The DM makes his rounds and checks each store. Quite the bummer. (I'd take coverless guides in a heartbeat, since I want to read them.)

Actually the guides being a penny is NOT a mistake. It is simply the marker for the employees to pull/destroy them, but every so often some of us manage to get guides for free or the penny price depending on the employee.

What you just wrote is the definition of a mistake.

It's a marker, not a price. Those guides are slated for destruction. Getting them (for sale or for free) is a mistake. The employees aren't supposed to do it. They are breaking the rules, usually out of ignorance. Or, as in my case where the DM has laid down the law, they are willfully breaking the rules in rare instances.

If GS ever updates their software, penny guides will disappear forever. All I'm saying is, "Enjoy the glitch while you can and be grateful." Complaining about guide condition or demanding that the price be honored is mind-boggling.

Marker. Price. What the fuck ever. All I know is that the stores where I still find ones on the shelf give them to me after clearing them out of the system. Is it wrong for them to do it?

As long as I don't come in when their DM is there and rub it in his face that they broke the rules, I see it as them scratching my back for me scratching theirs since I routinely return the favor of letting me have a guide or two with a pre-order deposit. I help their numbers and they help me to get guides I want in the condition I want.

Is it wrong of me to nitpick about the condition of something I'm getting that I'm not supposed to get? In my eyes it isn't since I intend to use the guides, either personally or in order to get guides that I truly want by trading for them.

If Gamestop, Best Buy and so on actually marked these things down to $5 before pennying them instead of them either being full price or 'we can't sell them to you', they might actually get more real guide sales. But 90% of the time the ones that're left by the time they penny are torn up pieces of shit that have been thumbed through by everybody and their uncle and are only worth that penny price by then.

It's actually a price marker... And it is there as a means of signaling the clearing out of inventory for a publisher refund.

As for the employees breaking the rules by selling them or giving them for free... In some instances they have to give them for free to save their ass so that they don't get in trouble for having a $0.01 transaction that shows they failed to do their job. Some states, Michigan is one of them, it is illegal for them not to sell an item for a price that is advertised, rings up, or known to be, and doing so can result in a very hefty fine from the state.

Like I said, if they ever update things so they can replace a price with the word "destroy" or "pull", this game is over.

We're exploiting a loophole (like most of the best CAG deals). And basically getting something for FREE. If some of you want to rationalize that you are somehow owed this free item and want to make demands about it, then we have vastly different views of the world. More power to ya.

Sorry for the OT. It always bugs me when folks treat the $.01 marker as an actual clearance price. The less attention drawn to it (by in-store complaints and/or arguments) the better.

Going on a run to a distant BB and GS. Maybe they'll be out of the draconian DM's range of influence..... ;)

Sorry for the OT. It always bugs me when folks treat the $.01 marker as an actual clearance price. The less attention drawn to it (by in-store complaints and/or arguments) the better.

Going on a run to a distant BB and GS. Maybe they'll be out of the draconian DM's range of influence..... ;)
I don't really feel like I'm 'owed' them, but if I do find guides on the shelf that should've been pulled at least let them admit those shouldn't be there and let me buy them or give 'em to me for free. The way some clerks/managers act, they think pennied guides are a huge secret.

You don't even know how many times I've had the GS employees at some of the stores round here go 'that can't be right' and override the price back to cover price or just plain old override it without saying anything.

Or the best has to be when they explain penny guides to me. Then I take over mid sentence, smirk and ask them nicely if they'll consider giving me one if I pre-order something for $5 down.

I admit though that when I first started grabbing guides for this price I was doing exactly like you said some may do now. But like they say you get more flies with honey than with vinegar.;)

So it's not a good idea to make a video and put it on youtube?

I realized that after I posted it, but I figured someone would point it out pretty quick.
