Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread XI

First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

Reduced Price Guide Discussion Thread(KEEP ALL DISCUSSION NOT RELATED TO GUIDE DROPS HERE!!!):

http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=169252

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you. Please, whenever possible, use RED font to make the drop info stand out. Thanks again.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinaevere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

Common Guide Drop Related Questions(FAQ):

FAQ - If you are new (or a vet with a few questions) look here SECOND! (After reading the above!)

Q: What Are Penny Guides?
A: Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Q: Do all guides from all stores drop at the same time?
A: No. While most chains have nationwide drops within their own store (as in every BB will have the same drops coast to coast), not every different chain drops at the same time (what drops at BB is NOT necessarily dropped at GS). When in doubt, check post TWO for drop info.

Q: I found a penny guide and a clerk denied me! I'ma report 'em!
A: Whoa, hold your horses there, pardner! First of all, not a question. Second, just because something is on the shelf, the clerk does NOT have to sell you that item. Most stores are PRIVATE property and as such can deny you just about anything they want - including a sale. The best advice is to not be rude, not be arrogant, and just try hard to get them to have pity on you.

Q: Why don't the clerks want to sell me their penny guides? Aren't they just throwing them away?
A: As stated above, the stores are ordered by the publisher to trash the guides, and are then given credit for those guides. If they don't do this, the publisher won't give them the credit - it's like losing a sale. On the employee level, selling a penny guide can sometimes get them in trouble (or even fired!) I know it seems silly, but this is their job we're talking about! Respect the man (or woman) behind the counter and you'll get a lot more guides than otherwise!

Q: Should I just ask if the store has penny guides then?
A: No, since that denotes that you have some insider information as to the runnings of these businesses.

Q: What if the clerk wants to know how I know so much about guide drops?
A: If asked where you got your info about guides that pennied, simply say either 'the internet' or 'a friend of mine told me they're on clearance'.

Q: But clerks will know what a penny guide is, right? I can talk to them like anyone else here...
A: Never use the word pennied to ANY store clerks unless you have built up a good rapport with them. Even then, it may seem a little fishy if you know more about their shop than they do.

Q: Are guides labeled as a penny on the shelf?
A: Sometimes. Most times, no. GS seems to label everything that gets a price drop, so often times guides will be stickered. But even so, they most likely won't sell them to you. A sticker does not mean 'have to sell'.

Q: I tried to buy a guide that this thread said was pennied and it didn't ring up as such! What gives?
A: Either 1) Our source was wrong (this rarely happens and is usually verified a FEW times within maybe an hour of posting), or 2) The clerk changed the price. It's usually number 2.

Q: What's the easiest way to get penny guides? This sounds like TONS of work!
A: Best Buy is probably the best place to get guides, followed by GameStop, GameCrazy, Toys R Us and then Blockbuster. From what I've seen though, probably 95% of guides that people get are snagged at BB - the rest come from the other stores. But it never hurts to try!

Q: Has there been a drop recently?
A: If you are asking this question you didn't fully understand the OP - go back and read it once more. When a drop happens, it will be posted, and then placed in the second post - trust us.

Q: How do you guys know so much about penny guides?
A: We sometimes have inside sources with the information from the stores themselves; other times, fellow CAGS just like you or me simply take suspected guides to the register and ask them to ring them up, to check their prices. Feel free to do this yourself, and help give back to the community by telling us what you find! However, DON'T ask "Has anyone checked XXX lately?", unless you are in the right thread (discussion area).

Thanks to GrilledWitOnions for creating the above FAQ, which should eliminate the need for such questions popping up in the thread from this point on out.
Super lucky, in fact, I think I went to at least 10 best buys, and only found 1 single guide - Army of two 40th day.
That was the June drop, not February. But, not doubting that something different may be happening.

Unless you're sure it was pre-pulled, you also have to consider the possibility that it was a "grab all them -----" ahat. I've seen them go store to store in pairs, one with a list, the other stripping the shelves bare. You may even have seen them, just understandably mistaken them for large roaches.

The June drop, I left, among many other things, 5 DA:O CE guides on the shelf for future shoppers. Each store that I bought stuff from immediately pulled the remainder of the guides on the drop list. I should have grabbed all dem shitz and traded them out to people - as it was, they ended up in the back rooms or dumpsters.

This is why many of us 'grab all dem shitz' asshats, as gantt so kindly referred to those of us who do this, buy up everything. It's either you take them all or risk them being dumpstered.

As of late around here it's either I grab everything and risk getting denied for everything or I cherry pick guides and by the time I go to my car with the 3-5 I may grab they're pulling the rest and will block any further sales from the drop.

In the case of hardcover LE/SE/CE guides I'd grab every last one I see since I know they should trade like mad on here and it's better than having them end up in some landfill someplace.

Back when I first joined CAG and started grabbing guides for a penny some BB/GS stores started bundling the guides with the games they were for and charged one set rate for both. Unfortunately that set rate turned out to be MSRP for guide and game.

Of course, I wasn't referring to *you*, oh keeper o' the thread :)

I'm sure the guide experience is different depending on where you live, which store(s) you try, and, yes, your reputation at that store. Personally, I don't *think* anybody at my local stores recognizes me as an individual, except perhaps one nice customer service rep.

It's been very rare that anybody other than the cashier has been involved in my guide purchases. I don't run back to check, but I seriously doubt that the moment I walk away from the till, the cashier runs to tell somebody "pull the pennied guides!" or the POS automatically sends a text to the MOD. Of course, I don't walk up with a dozen guides, either.

When I see drops posted here, I make the effort to get to the stores ASAP. I'd much rather the person who made it 1 minute or 1 hour before me take only what they need - with a possibility that the store will pull in response, and I'll get nothing (maybe - just because a guide gets pulled off the shelves doesn't mean it is immediately tossed or destroyed) - than that person take everything and the *certainty* that I'll get nothing.

And I suspect the CAG arriving as I'm leaving feels the same way.

Went into bestbuy today since it was next to office max where I needed to go. Didn't look like the shelf of guides was missing anything that was previously there, so if there is a drop tomorrow I don't think there was a pre-pull(unless they will do it tonight/tomorrow morning). Any word from the inside on if there's any changes to the prices of guides?
With tomorrow being a holiday I don't expect much.
in the many many many years i've been penny guiding there's been a few mega drops on holidays!
Me 2 CE and AC 2 LE both scanned at full price. It isn't looking like there is a drop today.
I think those, along with Bioshock 2 would have been most likely today among CE guides... Looks like no drop. Damn.

Thanks, Glock.
Wow no best Buy drops for a while huh?
yes it's been a terrible year with only one drop so far (maybe a stealth drop or two) which is the worst in history!!!

I'm waiting for a Borderlands drop along w/ GOW3 CE, ME2 CE, & Zelda Spirit Tracks CE. However @ this point I'll take whatever drops I can get.
yes it's been a terrible year with only one drop so far (maybe a stealth drop or two) which is the worst in history!!!
Two. The last few drops have been about 4 months apart. So I take some comfort that, going by that schedule, we're not due yet.

Ok, so just got back home. Went to a couple bestbuys.

I think I may have stumbled onto something though. At one bestbuy I went to they had 10 copies of Dragon Age Origins Limited Edition in the back room, indicated by a computer inventory system that I saw at another bestbuy. So I asked an employee if he had the guide, it might be in the back. He said he would check, and came back with it. I quickly asked how many he had, he said he saw about 10 or so, so I asked if I could have a couple more. He came back with five more guides, in total he gave me 6. He then pulled out some other guides he had stored in the back(which were no longer on the shelves at the store) saying he had multiples of these guides in the back as well.

Pokemon Platinum
Pokemon Pokedex HeartGold/SoulSilver
Bakugan
White Night Chronicles
and there was one more but for the life of me I can't remember it.

So I left with the 6 guides and thought, the rest are in the back why not see if I can get them seeing as no one is gonna see them anyway, that way I can at least throw them on here for trade if anyone was looking for it. So I went back in, same employee and he actually told me to forget everything he showed me. He said he isn't allowed to grab any of the guides from the back anymore and that I should just forget about them.

Possible pre-pull? Wonder if frosty or lox can confirm?

btw overall haul for today that I got:
Dragon Age Origin Collectors edition x6
Pokemon Dungeon Explorers of Sky x2
Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days
Mario and Luigi Bowsers inside story

Edit: This was the pokedex guide incase anyone is interested, I know there are quite a few out there http://www.buy.com/prod/pokemon-hea...e/q/listingid/97008799/loc/106/213771002.html

Actually won't be heading in to my store till around 5pm but I will do some digging around. I haven't heard/read/seen anything about guides at my store in so long. I really want Modnation to drop cause my Gamestops are fail.
I think I'm out of the game save for must haves and hardcovers anyways.

Finally remembered the last guide he pulled from the back room. It was the regular edition of Fallout 3 Game of the Year(softcover). Another note I forgot to add in my last post was all of them had the red clearance sticker on them with the regular MSRP price, that would be brought down 30% due to clearance. Resident Evil 5 which was still on the shelves also had this sticker. Not sure if that means anything, but just throwing out the info I have incase it can lead to any source of information regarding the next drop and what it will contain.

Also the employee after realizing the Dragon Age Origin guides were pennied out said he was speechless that they made it through 4 loops, not sure what he meant by this. It could mean 4 cycles from his store or something else, or could be bestbuy terminology for something. Again, just saying what I forgot to add to my original post.

I saw White Night Chronicles and Fallout 3 GotY today. Should I have scanned them? I figured they would not have been pennied, since this particular store is usually pretty stingy with the drops.
I saw White Night Chronicles and Fallout 3 GotY today. Should I have scanned them? I figured they would not have been pennied, since this particular store is usually pretty stingy with the drops.
I scanned them at another location and they both rang up full price. They were still on the shelves(at least the Fallout 3 GOTY one was) at 3/4 bestbuys I went to. So it could be this locations is ahead of the game, or really behind. Seeing as they still had copies of Dragon Age Origins Collectors Edition sitting in the back, I really can't tell you what to think. Could even be just that store making room for more guides.

I'm working the morning shift tomorrow, so I'll peek and poke around and report anything I find if there's anything worth reporting.

I doubt it though.

Just to follow up on my post from earlier that I made from my phone.

Hit the local BB at 10am open, Scanned ME 2 & AC 2 Hardcovers. Both rang up at full price. I stopped at this store Sunday just to check what guides were there so I could gauge if there had been a pre-pull when I showed up on Monday. Well, if anything had been pulled I didn't notice it. All the Hardcovers were still there, including the Bioshock 2.

I will be stopping tomorrow to pick up a copy of NHL 11 and I'll take another look at the guides and report back if anything drops or if guides were pulled. Just FYI this will not be until around 6pm EST.

Well as yesterday I saw this thread about the strategy guides thought why I wouldn't try it at the game stops in town.

1st store I went to I found a Mario and Luigi Bowser's Inside Story (BTW torn and everything) and Red Steel 2 (sealed) I went to the counter to check them out the guy told me where did you find this (M&L) this doesn't exist, he has it in his hands and just dropped it "see this doesn't exists" and for the RS2 it showed as .01 cent and said where did you found these I can't sell them to you sorry but then he just give them to me.

2nd store I got (2) Iron Man 2 and (1) Harvest Moon Sunshine Islands and the guy was surprised they went for a 1 cent and told another clerk if it was right and she say yes I guess. So I got those for 3 cents
Well had luck in my first time though he he.

Picked up another Red Steel 2(sealed), Metroid Prime Trilogy(sealed), Modnation Racers, WWE Smackdown Vs. Raw 2010 and Uncharted 2:Among Thieves. All at GS

After all this time on CAG I just noticed this thread. Ok so I noticed on the recent guide price drops, "Fallout 3 Game Of The Year LE" from BB went down. I search for it on BB's website and found some stores that have in stock. I'm excited. I've held back from buying the game thinking it would've been too hard.

Hopefully Resident Evil has a penny guide too. I gotta collect all the blue diamond things.

Hey bud - the guide you looked at on the site is not the LE guide. I will almost guarantee you will find no LE guides anywhere at BB... There were very few in the wild - most of us couldn't even find one...

Res Evil 5 LE pennied months ago. No way you find one on the shelf now. The Reg edition is still for sale at regular price.

Never hurts to run by your local BB and see what they still have, though. I just wouldn't get my hopes up for those 2 guides.

Sorry if this has been posted before.

Just discovered that Walmart.com is carrying the hardcover guide of Mirror's Edge for just $15.00. Got free shipping to my nearest Wal-Mart store.

Link:
http://www.walmart.com/ip/10231573

Pretty good considering that Amazon and B&N is carrying it for around $21.00, and the paperback version is still going for $24.99 at Borders.com.

The guide appears to have some great features including:

- Complete Strategy Guide
- Detailed labeled maps
- Locations of every collectable
- Strategy for every building and every enemy encounter
- In-dept DICE Studio Profile Paired with Exciting Behind the Scenes Info
- 30+ pages of behind the scenes content
- Stunning concept art
- Revealing interviews with the developers of your favorite DICE titles
- Photo tour of the DICE Studio
- Beautifully labeled maps detailing every hidden package, foothold, and leap of faith
- Pro-tips and strategy to help you complete every Xbox 360 Achievement and PlayStation 3 Trophy
- Locate every package and follow the quickest route to the drop off point
- Become the master of your environment with multiple strategies for every enemy encounter-the choice is yours

Hope this helps out some looking to complete every achievement they missed.

As far as I know there isn't a paperback version of this guide.

This pennied out a while back at BB and I think most people who wanted one got one at that time.
As far as I know there isn't a paperback version of this guide.
I was also surprised to hear there was a paperback version. The only version I ever saw at Best Buy was the hardcover. And a non-standard, smaller-than-normal-guide hardcover, too. (GRRRR) Seemed pretty thin to me; I might have to open it now that I see there's apparently all this great content there.

Damn. Ok, I'm a guide newbie and it was 3 am - a lesson learned. It's been two years since the book was released. I missed the penny deal on the Mirror's Edge book over a year ago. What got me to order this was all the behind the scenes stuff that's offered in the book. I miss playing that game, I want more of Mirror's Edge and I needed a fix!

Since I'm new to the guide scene I'm gonna research how often behind the scenes features are included in guides.

Hell, perhaps my cut of the money from this sale will go towards EA's Tim Langdell legal prosecution fund over the EDGE trademark fiasco. Here's hoping Langdell isn't harrasing Prima over thier publishing of the guide and using the word EDGE. Then again, that's wishful thinking.

 I just skimmed through the Wikipedia article about Tim Langdell. What a douchebag. He seems to sue anyone who uses the word EDGE in anything gaming related and demands a cut of their profits.

I'm shocked he hasn't sued Gamestop for using the word EDGE for their discount program.

Oh damn you man, you just gave his lawyer a new headache and Tim a new reason to smile and laugh

Maybe GS already cut him a deal and that's why prices are so high for the used and they're always the last to drop on the new ....

On a different note ... I just discovered that my local TRU has a bunch of game guides ... so, did they stop pennying them, or is there just no one to keep track of them?

No LE drops on the website... At least of the most likely candidates (ACII, ME2, Bioshock 2). I may get a chance to run by today, but I'm not expecting anything...
oh ballbarfer, it wouldn't be Monday without you posting hope of a BB drop..don't worry though, I'm right there with you :D
yeah i'll be reporting back with any news (i'm on the West coast so give me a few) but LOL yeah i've very excited to say the least cuz this has been one of the worst years for BB drops in history!

There wasn't a drop at bestbuy today. I just came back from buying RE5 Gold. I checked their kiosk and scanned Assassins Creed II and Bioshock 2.

If their every 4 months pattern they are doing so far this year continues were looking at october for a drop, hopefully.

Supposedly they stopped pennying them, which seems like it could be true as I've seen some pretty old guides that have dropped everywhere else at TRU as of late.

But then again I don't really go to TRU more than maybe 2x a year and that's due to the fact that their clearance is ALWAYS clearly marked and gets snapped up long before the last markdown.
