Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread XI

First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

Reduced Price Guide Discussion Thread(KEEP ALL DISCUSSION NOT RELATED TO GUIDE DROPS HERE!!!):

http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=169252

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you. Please, whenever possible, use RED font to make the drop info stand out. Thanks again.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinaevere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

Common Guide Drop Related Questions(FAQ):

FAQ - If you are new (or a vet with a few questions) look here SECOND! (After reading the above!)

Q: What Are Penny Guides?
A: Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Q: Do all guides from all stores drop at the same time?
A: No. While most chains have nationwide drops within their own store (as in every BB will have the same drops coast to coast), not every different chain drops at the same time (what drops at BB is NOT necessarily dropped at GS). When in doubt, check post TWO for drop info.

Q: I found a penny guide and a clerk denied me! I'ma report 'em!
A: Whoa, hold your horses there, pardner! First of all, not a question. Second, just because something is on the shelf, the clerk does NOT have to sell you that item. Most stores are PRIVATE property and as such can deny you just about anything they want - including a sale. The best advice is to not be rude, not be arrogant, and just try hard to get them to have pity on you.

Q: Why don't the clerks want to sell me their penny guides? Aren't they just throwing them away?
A: As stated above, the stores are ordered by the publisher to trash the guides, and are then given credit for those guides. If they don't do this, the publisher won't give them the credit - it's like losing a sale. On the employee level, selling a penny guide can sometimes get them in trouble (or even fired!) I know it seems silly, but this is their job we're talking about! Respect the man (or woman) behind the counter and you'll get a lot more guides than otherwise!

Q: Should I just ask if the store has penny guides then?
A: No, since that denotes that you have some insider information as to the runnings of these businesses.

Q: What if the clerk wants to know how I know so much about guide drops?
A: If asked where you got your info about guides that pennied, simply say either 'the internet' or 'a friend of mine told me they're on clearance'.

Q: But clerks will know what a penny guide is, right? I can talk to them like anyone else here...
A: Never use the word pennied to ANY store clerks unless you have built up a good rapport with them. Even then, it may seem a little fishy if you know more about their shop than they do.

Q: Are guides labeled as a penny on the shelf?
A: Sometimes. Most times, no. GS seems to label everything that gets a price drop, so often times guides will be stickered. But even so, they most likely won't sell them to you. A sticker does not mean 'have to sell'.

Q: I tried to buy a guide that this thread said was pennied and it didn't ring up as such! What gives?
A: Either 1) Our source was wrong (this rarely happens and is usually verified a FEW times within maybe an hour of posting), or 2) The clerk changed the price. It's usually number 2.

Q: What's the easiest way to get penny guides? This sounds like TONS of work!
A: Best Buy is probably the best place to get guides, followed by GameStop, GameCrazy, Toys R Us and then Blockbuster. From what I've seen though, probably 95% of guides that people get are snagged at BB - the rest come from the other stores. But it never hurts to try!

Q: Has there been a drop recently?
A: If you are asking this question you didn't fully understand the OP - go back and read it once more. When a drop happens, it will be posted, and then placed in the second post - trust us.

Q: How do you guys know so much about penny guides?
A: We sometimes have inside sources with the information from the stores themselves; other times, fellow CAGS just like you or me simply take suspected guides to the register and ask them to ring them up, to check their prices. Feel free to do this yourself, and help give back to the community by telling us what you find! However, DON'T ask "Has anyone checked XXX lately?", unless you are in the right thread (discussion area).

Thanks to GrilledWitOnions for creating the above FAQ, which should eliminate the need for such questions popping up in the thread from this point on out.

Don't understand why the guide publishers won't drop their guides to like $5 after 9 months or so, instead of field destroying them for nothing.

After X months, average Joe's are less interested in a particular old game, much less in its guide.

Even game publishers price drop their shit some number of months after launch, and I never heard they field destroy their shit to protect their pricing :whistle2:#

The only publisher I know that does this is Double Jump. All of their guides got a least one price drop.

Yeah, I used to work for EB Games years ago and I always knew that if we had a guide that I wanted, but did not want to shell out $15-20 for, I'd simply wait a few months and we'd usually "penny-it-out" of inventory. We even did that for a bunch of Call of Cthluhu hardcover Roleplaying books (which was sad), but those same books now sell for $75+ last time I checked.

Btw, has anyone ever gone to a "rare and hard-to-find books" store in search of out-of-print gaming guide books? Just curious. There are a few around my area, but I have never actually gone in to check. Although, I do go to Half-Price Books every once in a while, but they usually don't have much in that area worth purchasing.

On another note, too, I was recently looking for the Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions PSP guide book, and could not find it anywhere for less than $50+, but I stumbled across Powell's Books online and they had a "like new" copy for $8 + $4 shipping! I snatched it up very happily :)
Supposedly they stopped pennying them, which seems like it could be true as I've seen some pretty old guides that have dropped everywhere else at TRU as of late.
I do not think TRU pennies guides anymore. I saw 2 carts of old guides at 2 different stores. I scanned the guides and they rang up full price. The kid told me they had to "send them back", but we all know what that means.

Since their inventory is based on what local people turn in, it's going to vary wildly.

I have 4 HPB near me, and they have been gold mines. For both new and really old/rare guides. I've found guides for old Dreamcast games I own and for PC games from 10-12 years ago. My biggest score was the day I went and found a pristine copy of Dragon Age: Origins for half price right next to two(!) Valkyria Chronicles guides which were clearanced to $1.00 each! At the time, VC guides were going for $80 on ebay (they've recently dropped, which is odd).

Seriously?! Haha. Wow! I have been eyeing the Valkyria Chronicles game and guide up for a while, but I figured I'd hold out and see if I could get it cheaper. But that is just amazing!! :) I just may have to check some of those hard-to-find book stores out now.

VC is a fantastic game. And if you have a PSP, the portable sequel has much deeper game mechanics. :)

Good luck. Keep an eye out for the HPB threads, as I've picked up a bunch of my guides using their 50% off coupons. HPB also puts out a calendar that you can buy or they'll give it for free if you spend a certain amount. It has coupons as well. They're only 15% off, but good for your entire order.

Nice, I will be picking it up soon for sure! I've heard nothing but great things about it and I'm a big fan of tactics styled games. I was however able to grab VC II for the PSP a couple of weeks ago when Kmart had the game for $25, although I have not gotten around to playing it, either. Latest game I've had time to play has been Halo Reach! :)

I've also had DQ IX sitting on my floor w/ the guidebook for the last month and a half. Every time I see it I get a huge urge to pick up my DS and delve in, but a lack of time has prevented me from getting involved with it just yet. :/

You and basically everyone with an Xbox. ;)

Checked HPB locations and the closest ones are 47 and 49 miles away.

Was out of my area to visit someone and decided to check gamestop and found 2 copies of God of War Ultimate Edition. I got them both, kinda odd that they would still be on the shelf this long.

Also found a copy of darksiders and fossil fighters at the bestbuy near the gamestop. Both of them guides I didn't have before, even though darksiders has some extreme shelfware. The location also had a copy of FF XIII Collectors, so if thats in the next drop I know where I'm heading.

yeah this year has been very depressing....was hoping for a drop here soon cuz one of my local stores lets me trade them in and i then get games basically for free so this tread has helped me like you'd not believe!

Tomorrow will be the first monday of october, so there is a chance. But seeing as theres been no insider info, it will either be no drop or a silent drop of just a couple guides.
sadly looks like the weeks of anything penny is long over =(
It would be a shame if people succumb to this attitude and stop checking, because we're just now reaching 4 months since the last BB drop, which is about the same interval between the last few drops.

ha! @gantt - we're supposed to check? Man I never check unless I get word on here, but then thats more of me confirming. I figure the BB and GS insiders will definitely tip us if it happens..but maybe you're right, I wonder if there are at least 4 guides that are a penny at GS/BB right now, just sitting there!?!

For me it's more about BB's crackdown on penny guides, including the pre-pulls. BB drops were always a great, but have been severely lacking for the last year or so.

My BB has a ton of guides that I'm waiting to drop. In particular is RE5, ME (normal & CE), GOW 3 (normal & CE), & Borderlands.

I don't expect those SMG guides to drop anytime soon. It seems Nintendo guides take the longest time to drop.

NICE! Thanks for the heads up.

Edit: Wait, cheats and codes spring 2010? Shouldn't it be summer 2010 that pennies not spring?

Awesome, thanks lox. Still kinda hoping for a few more LE's. (FFXIII / ME2 anyone?)

Can't go until later today but I don't anticipate any problems. I'll probably have extras.

Ok, heading out to my local store now for 10am opening. Will report back.

Will also check some of the LE guides that have been around for a while now (ME2, FFXIII, & AC2). Post if there are any others that I missed and I'll scan them.

Hope you're the eastern timezone glock :D that'd be awesome. Will HOPEFULLY (as in, I hope they dropped in store) be heading out to bestbuy(s) today if true. Suspenseful! As always, THANKS FOX!

Bleh, went to BB yesterday and all those guides were there, doubt they'll be there today knowing my luck and the fact I can't go 'till after work. Good luck other people.

Got one of each except they didn't have bioshock which is what I wanted. Zelda, godof war, and mass effect le were all full price.

3 stores, all have had pulls. Maybe lox's store just didn't get the memo? Still able find sone scattered though. All those force unleashed's are gone. Found 1 bioshock & 1 Alan wake hiding behind others. Thank goodness for busy/lazy employees.

I went to my local 'money' store. This place always has guide drops and almost never pulls ahead of time, (if at all). Walk around the store and didn't see a single guide except for Halo Reach and DR2 on a promo cap. Place was a disaster as they were remodeling the store. Asked an employee who said all guides were in the back. Asked him to check on a few and he came back and said that all guides they carried had been keyed out and they were no longer carrying any guides at all.

Had the other half check the store by my house, read off the first 6 or 7 guides from the list and they were all pulled. Will stop there after work to see if I can find any stragglers, but for now it looks like the drop is happening and some stores had notification ahead of time to pull the guides.
God of War III also dropped.
Thank Lox. This is the only reason I miss working on Mondays.
The CE version?

I saw that at my local BB yesterday. God damn I hope they didn't pull it. Or anything because these were all there yesterday...:bomb:

BTW, do they pull mid-day or in the morning? If it's only in the morning I can wait 'till after work and use my lunch break for...lunch.
God of War III also dropped.

For real? My store pulled everything, but there still were God of War's, both normal and CE sitting there.
God of War III also dropped.

Yep, looks like I missed one. GoW III LE dropped.
Thanks Frosty!

Yeah sorry I should have verified. My store pulled everything. Soon I'll be in charge of gaming which is hella sweet. As for now I just grab them from the warehouse and buy them on break. haha. I will be in search of Platinum though.
When you guys say they pulled it, do they usually do it the day before or just before opening day of drop?
Inventory pulls them at 7am in my store. I would imagine it to be similar in most stores.

Same problem here. Guides section was cut in half.
Is that Alan Wake LE the one that comes with an art book or something?
Yes, and its bigger than the normal one. The back of the sleeve shows that it has the normal guide, and an artbook.

Looks like I might have to try and go to BB this evening, knowing I'll probably be disappointed. We'll see what happens.
