Reduced Price Guides-Discussion Thread

Only other thing I could think of at GS is the manager at that store went into the system and marked up that pennied guide to MSRP, which would make no sense whatsoever since the correct thing to do was pull it and chuck it in the dumpster like they're supposed to.

But then again if corporations always did what they're supposed to on time then we'd never get in on this deal at all.

Ha. They tried, but I notice it on the screen. They made up some BS and refused to sell it. It was 2 FF13 Ce guides. I was disappointed, but Oh well. What can I do. It's just a book.

I was able to get a Halo Reach L.E. guide today at GS. That guy was way cool. We talked a little about games and then I walked over to the guide rack.

I was straight with him about the guide (I've read online that some people have been buying it at one cent), he looked it up and he said yeah. I asked him if I could buy it and he told me "I'll let you have it" :D

I still gave him a penny, that made him laugh

Congrats!

I went into a GS yesterday to ask about 3rd Birthday and spotted a Halo Reach guide as well. For some strange reason, there was a sticker on it that said the guide was for sale for 3.99 until 12/xx.

Anybody ever come across that before?

3.99 was worth it for me, and I tried to purchase it along side setting an Okamiden preorder, but he refused to ring it up and put it under the register.

I'm really starting to like Best Buy.

BB 3/3 - 5 Guides
GS 1/3 - 1 Guide

went to best buy today to return some games (during last drop one best buy said the penny price only was if you bought the game and the guide). Afterwords looked at the guides, which I had already done once the day after the drop.
I see ... Super Mario Galaxy 2 LE not wrapped and pretty dirty along with the code book. So i scoop them up and head to the register. At the register saw MoH CE (or LE?) sitting there, got that too. Cashier asked the guy next to her if they were were supposed to be a penny, he says oh yeah most of them ring up that way.
Funniest part was nobody could find the sku for SMG2, so i googled it and told them what to type in, lol. I'm glad there is still somewhere to get my guide fix since gamestops here have been cracking down.

This may sound like a cheesy idea, but what do you folks think about adding pictures of the guides as links in the list? The names tend to blur for me, especially with CE/Standard edition guides, so I think having the pictures of them up would be great to better memorize it.

The idea itself is fine but the implementation of it would probably be a big hassle (not to mention the size of a picture multiplied times dozens of guides). Maybe IATCG would be willing to put the CE/LE letters of the respective guides in yellow to highlight them some more as a mid-solution.

Yeah, it will probably be a huge pain. Even if you just hotlinked it from some random site. I wouldn't mind helping out though, the drops don't happen frequently anyways, and it we should be able to keep the past six months or so up to speed.

As for the size thing, I see how that could be an issue. But if it's just put in links like this it should make it easier.

Alan Wake

Animal Crossing City Folk
Assassin's Creed Brotherhood CE
Assassin's Creed II
Crackdown 2
Dante's Inferno
Dead Rising 2 CE
Dragon Age Origins: Awakening
Fallout 3 GOTY
Final Fantasy XIII CE
Just Cause 2
Left 4 Dead 2
Legend Of Zelda: Spirit Tracks CE

I'm not going to add this, though it is a good suggestion nonetheless. My opinion is if folks want these things when they drop to a penny, then they should educate themselves enough to know how many versions of a guide are out there and what they look like on their own.

But as of now I'm not adding in a post with pictures/links to pictures for each guide that drops OR bolding/highlighting the LE/CE/SE designations on those version guides that have dropped.

But if you want to take over post #6 of the main guide thread and make this photo wiki yourself, RabbitSuit, then by all means PM a mod and ask for them to transfer that post over to you to edit. I believe they have been able to transfer ownership of posts before, though I'm not sure if their power is limited to JUST the OP of a thread or not.

I'm pretty sure it is possible, though I'm not sure if it can be transferred over to another user or just to a mod. For an example of this, see the thread gargus made about cockroaches in their Gamestop games, which was transferred over to I believe Shrike after gargus refused to stop unspoilering pics that were spoilered numerous times.

That's very odd, I've never come across that :whistle2:k That would have been a great price to buy it at.

Nice, BB is still my 1st choice for guides but lately I've had luck with some GS around here.
...but what do you folks think about adding pictures of the guides as links in the list?
I don't think pictures should be added to the list; I would hate to further facilitate penny guides to lurkers. I think it's fine the way it is. But if you need it then you can just save the JPEGs of the guides and paste them in a Word doc for yourself. Just a suggestion ;)

I keep an Excel file for the guides and update it whenever there is a drop. I just print it out and take it with me.

This last weekend, I went to a GS I had never gone to (I was looking for a God of War 3 U.E. but didn't find one. A great, local CAG ended up hooking me up :D) and found some guides from previous drops: Brutal Legendx2, The Saboteurx1, Vanquishx1, Zelda C.E.x1, and a couple of others.

I didn't ask the guy if I could buy them; he didn't clear my cashier profiling radar. I hope there is another cashier when I go this weekend.

Hm, you make a good point. Is that a huge problem though?

I guess I'll hold out on that, but now that I know the mods can do that kinda junk, I feel like asking them to let me take over an outdated topic I frequent o.o. Anyways, I wouldn't put the effort into creating a list just for myself.

Btw, did TRU stop reducing guide prices or something? Or have people simply not gone in to check these days?

Well, I've gotten the recent urge to collect strategy guides (for no reason in particular), but I stopped by my local Vintage Stock and picked up:

Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
Wild Arms Alter Code F
Red Faction Guerrilla

Each for $2 each. It's no 1 cent like everyone else seems to be finding, and they are definately in some used condition, but I can't find discounted strategy guides anywhere else.

You should check the trading thread. Several people are willing to sell guides for cheap (saaaay, post #28, for example).

1. Are Halo Reach Legendary LE's hard to find, ie truly limited?
I found 5 HR and 1 AC: B CE today and got them all, added those to the 2 HR LE's I already have :)

2. Which out of the 6 covers are most rare or desired, I would think Noble 6 maybe?

Sorry if this is a bit off topic, but is $6 for "The Legend of Zelda: Spirited Tracks" CE and $9 for Bioshock 2 CE, all in mint condition, a good deal?

Both are far from a cent, but they're alright. They're both a great deal from MSRP, but you could find those prices from multiple scores easily enough.

There was some gentleman with a huge amount of Spirit Tracks CEs for 1.99 and 4dollar shipping with 2dollar shipping for every additional one. And Amazon is about the same price either way. And there's an 8.99 Bio2 CE guide with free shipping on Amazon as well.

Yeh I found a perk to wearing my rep clothes and checking out at closing time with a 17yr clerk lol I'm not a collector of guides but I think I'm gonna have to keep a few of these
You mean the guides for $8 each? Or the games? I ask because I think the FFVII guide is still in print actually.
It is, is it? Well....crap. Yep, it's the guides.

*sigh*

Yeah. Last time I checked it was still being printed. I've seen it readily available at every Borders/Barnes & Noble store I've stopped at. Maybe that's changed, as I couldn't tell you the last time I was in a Borders/B&N store, but just like the game the guide isn't worth much.

That's why I thought it might be worth something. Every bookstore around here from Barnes & Noble, to Borders, to Books a Million...I haven't seen any guides of games more than a couple years old.

Still new at this:D

General rule of thumb for me is: If it's hardcover, for a popular game/series AND goes out of print, then it might be worth something.

But there are exceptions to that rule, of course. Case in point: Gran Turismo 4: Driving The Game.

Nice looking hardcover artbook that details the making of the GT4 game, but it has ZERO value just about.

Even the original Silent Hill guide by Prima is worth jack shit, even though the game/guide came out 12 years ago.

It's just weird how some guides/artbooks become worth decent bank and others are worth nothing.

Sorry if this has been discussed before, but does anyone know if the price scanner Best Buy app will show if a guide is a penny? I am just curious because my Best Buy does not have price scanners. Thanks
I was checking values for the Mass Effect 2 CE game for another CAG on eBay and look what I found: http://cgi.ebay.com/Mass-Effect-2-C...113?pt=US_Nonfiction_Book&hash=item3365fbf8b1

Hmmmm....that name looks awfully familiar from somewhere and look at the price 'omg down to $27 from $31'.
Lol, he's got a lot more listed on CAG here. But it's up to him to list for whatever he can sell for.

I need some $$$ to pay off my lowball winnings, so I wouldn't mind making me some dough!

Only reason I mentioned it is I believe he's one of the ones who always complains about people reselling/hoarding. I just found it funny that I'm not the only hypocrite on CAG.

maybe its just a 'coincidence' like the shrike on slickdeals that posts cag deals

Yup, that's me. However, you couldn't be more wrong about me being one that complains about reselling/hoarding. I like how you just assume that without actually bothering to check and see if it's accurate. So not only am I not a hypocrite, you seem to enjoy jumping to uninformed conclusions and resorting to calling people names with absolutely no basis. So goes the old saying about what happens when you assume. Except, in this case, the only ass is you.

Apologies if you haven't been one of the people to complain about hoarders/resellers around here, but it just seems like that's the popular bandwagon to jump on lately around here. So much so that even the mods are silencing people and deleting posts that even half mention anything about flipping/reselling/hoarding.

Again, apologies if I misspoke, but I definitely thought you were one of the people to jump on people for hoarding/reselling.

Fair enough, apology accepted.

Just so you know my process, most (not all, but most) of the guides I'm selling I've gotten through trades. GS guides are essentially dead in my area as are most BB's. The games and guides I sell are how I'm able to pay for my gaming wants and needs.

Since I've been perma-banned from the whole GS chain(still can't believe that:lol:) and my local BB stores have been cracking down lately I've been getting less and less from drops.

Not that I was getting all that many to begin with anymore, since I think the one BB employee has been hoarding everything to resell at a local flea market for $2 each.

But $2 each is still better than $19.99 or even as much as $39.99 for some LE/CE/SE's as of late.

So, I would appreciate some feedback here. I managed to score a Fable III LE @ Gamestop today. What's the problem? I already have a sealed Fable III that I got for $10 @ Gamestop back around Christmas time.

Which one would be more 'trade worthy', CE or regular? I have sat on CEs a few times (Prince of Persia) and finally had to donate them to goodwill.

However, the regular hasn't dropped yet anywhere...I am at a loss as to which to keep.

Advice?

If there's a CE out there you want, put the Fable III CE up for trade for the one you want, chances are someone will bite(I believe there are quite a few people looking for the Fable III CE but not sure how many of them got in on the gamestop drop). If not I say keep it as a collectors item, it may not become rare some day but it's not like your sitting on a stack of them, if you like fable III you will probably appreciate keeping the CE version of the guide instead of the regular. It truely depends on your taste, I personally like keeping a copy of both if I can manage to get lucky enough to get both, but otherwise I would keep CE over regular any day.

I haven't had any luck picking up penny guides from BB and GS. I stopped by 4 GS tonight. Two of them had the Fable III CE, but couldn't give it to me because of the district manager  How does the DM know whether or not the guides are given out or thrown into the trash?

Yeah I haven't had much luck either. So far all the guides that have dropped at gamestop weren't in stock at the location where they will give them to me, and the other locations will have none of me getting the guides.

I think official GS store policy on pennied guides is for the DM to personally oversee the "destruction" (which usually means tearing the cover off and then tossing them in the trash) of the guides, but it is YMMV on how strict the DMs enforce this policy. Some DMs are much more lax and allow store employees to give them out; some DMs are very strict.

You might just have a strict DM, or the employees are just using that as an excuse to grab it for themselves after their shift (it's entirely probable, especially with Collector Edition giudes). *shrug* In any case, there's not much you can do about it -- just please don't call GS corporate and raise a fuss.
