Reduced Price Guides-Discussion Thread

Well, I'll be on my laptop eagerly awaiting the ~0930 update!

Just to confirm for tomorrow, it seems our best shot at drops would be the following:
Mortal Kombat vs DC
Left 4 Dead
Bionic Commando
Resident Evil 5 Limited
Fallout 3 Limited

and other, but less likely, potential drops are the following:
Mirrors Edge Limited
Fire Emblem
Dead Space
Fear 2
Prince of Persia

Did I miss any?

Since none of those guides listed still on the website dropped to a penny, it does not look like there is a lot of hope for a big drop today if any.
 
Don't forget the Prince of Persia LE. That was mentioned as being deleted from the system also.

Either way, today is the moment of truth!
 
Well, the first leg of my epic quest today is done. I'm at Panera eating Facacca(sp?) bread and drinking Mickey D's orange drink($1.07 for a large, best drink deal around atm) while eagerly waiting and hoping for good news. :D

And that would be bad news. I still go and have them check the FO3 LEs though.

Geez, first there were a hundred useless posts in the Guide Drop thread. But the important "No guide drop today" post is now in the Guide Discussion thread.
 
well on that note just curious on peoples thoughts. i have access to at least 4 persona 4 guides at gamestop for 9.99 should i snag em all considering the trend
nocturne,persona 1 2 3 all are 50+ new think its a good bet????
 
Like i said there are no guarantee's and no pattern. Those guides will probably drop at some point, most guides do but as to when....

Exactly. That's why it's silly to camp out for guides when you don't know for sure. Heck, it's silly to do that anyway. I laugh at people who camp out for concert tickets. How much sillier is it if you're doing that for a strategy guide?

That's a safe bet. I know Double Jump has complained before that their small book style guides are too expensive to reprint, hence why nocturne and persona 3 never got them.
 
yah i know persona 3 i bought like 3 extras and was stupid and traded them off and a few months later they went from 15$ to now they averaged 45-50+ new sealed.
 
Thanks for checking Frosty. How about checking Maximo:Ghosts Of Glory's guide for the PS2 for me. I saw a couple copies of it the last time I went to Atlantic City with friends at the BB in Springfield(PA) down by King Of Prussia. I had it checked and it came up MSRP.
 
I checked the Maximo: Ghosts to Glory guide before I left.* It had been pennied out.
I don't know when. I can get the sku tomorrow if you want it.

I used to work Mondays but the last one and next I'm not scheduled. I could probably get in a few minutes before opening though. Probably not able to report until 10am-10:10am. I'll keep an eye out every day I'm working for any shenanigans.

I checked in the computer, not the guide itself. Being such a new store there's no way we'd have a guide that old.
 
So I checked the local Best Buy for price guide drops after work today and when I brought a stack up to be scanned, the cashier (who actually was an old coworker, cool person) informed me that if any of them scan at 0.01 then she is not allowed to sell it to me.

What is the deal with all the blockbusters I visited today having $10 clearance tags on %90 of the guides?
 
Sinnbox- BBV is having an unadvertised sale on guides. All guides should be 50% off unless it's a franchised store. It was discussed in the BBV thread. I'm not sure if it was ever posted here or in the discussion thread.

In my experience, the best way to deal with BB cashiers that refuse to sell is to say "that's alright, I'll go put these back," calmly walk away, and roll up to the next available cashier, who probably will sell to you.
 
I'm pretty sure in August and September we'll see the most guide drops. They need to make room for the Fall lineup. At least that's what a GS manager told me from what he remembered last year.
 
Take this with a grain of salt, but my friend who has worked at BB for three years claimed he saw a company wide memo regarding penny guides. He said that in an effort to stop penny guide sales, BB got rid of the media manager position and replaced it with a merch manager. The merch manager is supposed to be much more competent (and trained) in dealing with penny guides. If my friend is right, it'll get a lot harder to get penny guides during the next drop.
 
I highly doubt bestbuy is going to go thru such a massive overhaul of firing people and changing job positions at thousands of stores just to stop penny guide sales....
 
Yeah, I'm with Brian. It would be cheaper to just sell penny guides than to go through sweeping employment changes across 600 stores nationwide.

That's like saying "our living room needs a new paint job, so let's tear down the house and build a new house".
 
If BB does not replace them with new hires, why wouldn't they let a percentage of their staff go in this economic environment? Pennied guides alone may not support the action, but could certainly be a piece of the puzzle.

If this is true, then I say YAY since then the red headed douchebag at my closest store may be gone and the bitch media manager at the other one may be kaput too.

If true, thank you Best Buy, since I had no problem talking to the normal manager and he always agreed that if the guides are out there they should be sold for .01.
 
I wish BB had scanners somewhere, like Target. Sure, every item I've picked up so far has been unmarked half-off, but it also means I can't just grab a bunch of things and check their prices.

Which is bullshit because Best Buy supposedly gets credit from the guide publishers when a guide is pennied out. If they're not getting credit I don't think BB would penny them out in the first place.

I think you misunderstood. They aren't firing anyone, merely changing their positions around. Instead of having a separate manager for each department watch over clearance/pulled goods there is supposed to be a new person called the merch manager who does that as one of their primary duties (storewide).
 
Bad news. As of right now I'm not working on the 3rd, which is the first Monday of the month. I could be there at 10am or depending on which manager is there I may be able to get in around 9:50am-9:55am. I'm closing on the 2nd so I'll check to see if anything changes.

Thanks for checking. On the bright side, whenever we do get a drop, it will be an epic one. Hopefully they don't start stealth dropping everything on random Mondays like they did with MGS4. I'm only trained to check these threads every first Monday.

Aa few more guides got updated status' to discontinued or deleted. I know Street Fighter IV was one of them. Some of the others are Indiana Jones Staff of Kings, Halo Wars, Mirrors Edge, Infamous, Terminator Salvation, Wolverine, Killzone 2 and one I really really want and have two of in my store Star Ocean.
 
Wow did I really drop the ball. I didn't work today so I didn't check the guides. I guess some dropped. I'm going to head over there later tonight and grab some. I could have worked today but figured nothing would happen till next week.

*Oh and by heading over there and grabbing some I also meant I will check the computer for anything else not noted.
How come nobody posts in here any more. I post more in this thread then any others I think. I'm not very good at online communities.

I want the RE5 guides to drop cause I'm gonna have at least 10+ copies. Hoping to nab a Fallout 3 LE from someone then the rest go 1 for 1 as long as I want the guide being offered.
