Rei no Otaku gets the hat trick with General Gaming Thread #9!

Drew Brees will now appear on the cover of the next Madden game. His knee cap will broken in the 3rd week of the season.

Sorry to hear about your PS3, myke. That blows.

I'm speaking from experience, but absolutely DO NOT try to swap out the HDD's without backing up your saves first! If you try to take the HDD from your 60 GB and put it into a new PS3, it's going to automatically reformat it.

Pretty much all of the recent PS3 game saves are locked to your profile, so simply backing them up on a USB flash drive will not work! The only way you'll be able to keep your saves and trophies is if you do a full system backup on a external HDD. I ended up losing all of my saves about two months ago when I bought the FFXIII edition PS3. I tried to just swap out the HDD from my old 80 GB, and all of my saves and trophies got wiped. I had like 5 hours on my FFXIII save file, and had to start all over again. That was just awful...I lost my saves/trophies for Uncharted 2, Tekken 6, Street Fighter IV, Bayonetta, and much more.

The system will give you a warning before it reformats your HDD, but since my FFXIII PS3's default language was in Japanese, I didn't really bother to read it closely and pushed "OK" like an idiot.

It almost sounds like its possible to lose trophies based on your experience. If they're synced to the server that shouldn't be an issue, right?
It almost sounds like its possible to lose trophies based on your experience. If they're synced to the server that shouldn't be an issue, right?
Yeah, but when was the last time you forced a sync?
It almost sounds like its possible to lose trophies based on your experience. If they're synced to the server that shouldn't be an issue, right?
The first time you resync with a new system you'll get those Trophies back that were on the server. If you failed to sync trophies to a server, you'll lose those Trophies.

When it comes to putting your HDD into a new PS3, it will ask you to format it, you have a choice of saying yes or no.

Looks like I must have synced recently, as the last ones I got (FFXIII) were all viewable online.

The money is moot at this point. the absurdity of locking HDDs to systems is infuriating, as that means I lose all of my gamesaves and downloaded data. fuckin' ridiculous.

I backup my laptop every Friday because I'm afraid of hard drive failure, not because I'm afraid the laptop will die. If the laptop dies the data is still recoverable. I've never seen anything like this; it makes zero fucking sense.

Hey Dallow, I sent that money for the Prime. Sorry it was a little late, things got tight for a minute. You ever find your Xenogears?

Also, your PM box is full, hence this post.
RE5- terrible horror game, great co-op action game.
Agreed. Thought it was a blast in co-op.

But I was never much of a fan of the series before RE4 so I don't mind them getting away from survival horror and making them more action oriented.

If you have a way to *mount* the drive in a computer, you can probably pull all your data to copy back onto it... the only place you'd get fucked is with whatever games you had that had "copy protected" saves.

The co-op should have been completely separate from the single player, like Uncharted 2.

They ruined the single player by having forced co-op.

I still haven't picked up RE5. I'm tempted to grab the new Gold Edition version being released soon but haven't read up on it much.

So Myke's situation has gotten me looking around.

Some people are saying a full backup and restore on a new system will result in the transfer of your copy protected saves. Some are saying your copy protected saves won't be transferred. Clear this up, GGT!

I cannot figure out for the life of me how to get Netflix on PS3 to run in Hi-Def through wireless. It always go to 480.

I still can't find anything on the NXE when I need it. Then again I only have to delve into those menus when I want a demo or DLC.

Glad I'm not the only one who gets lost in NXE. The marketplace is a fucking mess! MS can't design a simple navigable menu for the life of them...it's like they came up with a "cool, hip" design, then tried to shove a menu system into it.

I get lost in NXE quite a bit myself. They should really clean it up and simplify it. I like the overall design of the NXE, but the blades and everything on the original 360 dashboard was ridiculously faster and I miss it.

Why not invest in an external HDD? They're not so expensive nowadays, and you only need one that's big enough to hold all of your PS3 data (so you can probably find an 80 GB external HDD or something for pretty cheap).

Also, I'm an idiot. I didn't lose my trophies because like you said, they're synced to the server.

If you do a full system restore onto an external HDD, the copy protected saves will transfer over as well. Don't worry, I've done it before.

I really dig the blades and wish we could go back - but they'd have fewer opportunities for product placement then. :(

kenji: I have a spare hard drive, but it's the principle, I suppose. the hard drive works, so it's just nonsensical that I need to back up something that works so I can get it to work.

Oh shit myke, that sucks. Is it YLOD?
My friend got that recently, and managed to 'blowdry' his system enough to turn it on, backup saves, deactivate accounts, and use the data transfer onto a new Slim.

Since then, I've backed up all my saves on to a USB stick. (save for the copy protected ones of course)

If you want to move your copy-protected saves to a NEW system, you need both PS3s next to each other, and connect them with an ethernet cable and use the 'data transfer utility'.

Ah, thank you.
Let me check for the game and I'll clear my inbox and get back to you.

Nope, it's red. Starts green for ~2s, turns yellow for ~1s, then blinks red.

I've thought about buying a heat gun and trying to fix it - but I've got so much to do this week getting ready for a conference and going out for a job interview early next, I don't want to fuck with it anymore. If Sony can assure me my HDD will work in their repair, I'll pay for it. If they can not, then I'll heatgun it when I get some time.

Taking the PS3 apart and cleaning it was fun and quite easy compared to other consoles. I don't know if I fucked up the BD drive parts when I opened it up to get WKC disc out, though.

EDIT: I got the chance to finish Sword and Poker on my iPhone. The most I've ever played any $0.99 game. Holy crap it's good.

That is basically what the YLOD is. Even if it doesn't turn yellow, it's the same thing.

It'd be pretty shit if I got snowed in Wednesday since that would be two consecutive Apple Store trips I'd miss on account of weather.

I have shitty luck with electronics. This MacBook is from September was a replacement for a MacBook that had been serviced 4 times in 2.5 years, and now I'm on PS3 #2, Wii #2, and 360 #4. It'd be one thing if I were a flithpig and not an obsessive clean freak - since I'm the latter this shit don't make no sense.
It be pretty cool if I got snowed in Wednesday with a copy of BioShock 2 :)
Could well happen, the apartments I live at only made a token gesture of getting rid of the snow in the car park. I don't expect them to dig my car out for me, but at least clear the main bit out. God I'm starting to hate these winters.

Finished co-oping Halo Wars over the weekend, it wasn't bad. Playing through Ghostbusters now then after that I think I'll finally get round to playing the Shivering Isles on Oblivion.

Damn, it looks like this playthrough of ME2 won't be perfect either. I lost the loyalty of 2 squad members...

Thanks to myke's trauma, I'm taking a snapshot of my PS3 now. Precautionary, I hope...

Is there a list of games which have copy protected saves somewhere -- I want to know what I'd stand to lose.

2 run throughs. 2 "perfect". No issues whatesover...
Stop throwing your electronics on the floor, Myke.
Maybe I should start to clean my apt by not using a garden hose, right?

Of all my console deaths over the years, I own two of them; one was a PS2 whose MB I soldered through, and one was an Xbox that...I forget what I was trying to do, but I basically soldered two points together and shorted the whole thing. Sold it as indiv. parts on eBay and made my money back, though.

The DIY route seems rather simple for the PS3, dallow - it's just a matter of having 2-4 free hours to complete said task.

If I can fix 360s, I can fix PS3s? Maybe I don't need the backup plan contingency. :D

I didnt even know you could lose loyalty???

Well i beat it last night. Not as good of a main story as ME1, but the side stories are what made ME2 good to me.

Plus for some reason i love the whole idea of Legion and the heretics... makes ME1 more interesting

You can when your crew members have an argument. Unless you have paragon or Renegade points to talk calm both people down.

Legion is my favorite party member .I just hate that you get him so late into the game.

I tried the Sonic Racing demo. Uh...why the hell did the game logo appear after lap one and send me from 2nd to 7th place? If that's an item, that's a real dick item if I say so myself.

I also played some more Critter Crunch, which is really, really good.

Ninja Blade has alot of Quick Time Events. I would have liked to be in on that design meeting. QTE, than another QTE, than a cutscene, then another QTE.

Messed up on a Loyalty mission and lost the trust of another. I guess I could always bring them along with me for the final mission. Also the first time I played I purposely let someone die to ensure he wouldn't annoy me in 3.

What are the odds of having more than a cameo role in ME3? 33% of the first cast returned as recruits, right? So you're talking what, 3 members of your current team, if that percentage holds up?

I have no idea but I just want that Achievement for everyone surviving.

I'm going to try to purposefully make some people die on my Renegade playthrough of ME2. I was going to finish it off tonight, but I think I'll hold till tomorrow since the new armor's going to be out.

Also, how many of your squad members argue? I've only seen Jack/Miranda argue, but everyone I know makes it sound like there are more arguments.

It turns out that Netflix on PS3 doesn't upscale non-HD stuff to 720p, but instead keeps it at its' native resolution. sigh. I hope they fix that in the future.

Tali and a certain party member. Also Shepard will get into an argument with the Merc if you choose the Paragon option during his mission. And if you don't have a high of Paragon score you can never gain his trust after it.

It might not work so good without the loyalties. :S Make sure everything else is upgraded, I suppose, then take them with you? They'll probably still die though. :(
