We drive home from a late dinner around 11:30pm. As we approach our block I noticed it's pitch black, all the street lights are out, and our neighbors' homes are unlit. There's no cars on the road except us, and the intersection is dead, no lights; there's no one on the streets. Odd.
My significant other is worried. "Let's go to my sister's house," she urged.
"Why," I responded, "this is our home."
We park, and enter our place. We use our cell phones as light sources to navigate inside the house. I locate my maglite for moments like this. I tell my significant other to get the candles and matches.
She looks out the windows and begins to panic. She doesn't want to stay, cause she's afraid of the dark. In the distance, I see a police car combing the houses with a spotlight. Moments later, flares are set around the intersection.
It's a blackout.
I locate my defensive weapon where I placed it for moments like this. I live in a tough neighborhood. I double-check our alarm system. It's still functioning, but the display tells me AC power is out and it's running on backup.
If zombies bust through my windows or doors at this moment, I'm gonna start taking some heads off!
I help my significant other to bed upstairs, it's getting late. I stay up to keep watch. Luckily power returned half an hour ago. I go check the kitchen clock, and by my calculations power was out for nearly 5 hours.
I blow out the candles. That was a fun experience. "R-E-S-I-D-E-N-T E-V-I-L: Home Edition!"
