Revolution Name Revealed - Nintendo Wii? WTF?

http://www.4colorrebellion.com/archives/2006/04/27/4cr-on-wii/

4cr sounds off... of most note is Octorok's comment:
Nintendo Wii. Hmm… I like it. It seems Nintendo has hired some really good marketers this time around. The fact of the matter is this: Everyone can make as many PeePee jokes as they want, but that only further illustrates the brilliance of this name, and I’ll tell you why.

In the subconscious of the social collective-mind and community, any press, good or bad, is good for a new product brand. Why? Because the brand gets distributed to potential acceptors. The more people talk about and discuss your brand, the more widespread your product’s branding becomes, and the more effective the iconography will be. Good or bad, it doesn’t matter. The fact is that the more people ‘talk’ about it, the more people will ‘hear’ about it, and the more ‘distributed’ the brand becomes for potential acceptors. The name “Wii” is bound to evoke discussion and debate all over the Internet, and eventually in many other circles, and this is exactly what Nintendo wants: Widespread showcasing of the Brand to the greatest possible pool of brand-acceptance candidates. Now, to fail from this point on, Nintendo’s “Wii” brand would have to launch poorly and with lackluster reviews. If in fact “Wii” launches strong, the brand will be a homerun!

When I first saw the name, I didn't even think of the name being a euphomism for dicks or piss. It's Wii, not Wii Wii. How many people say "I'm gonna go play my PS2 PS2." The novelty of the name will wear off. Shoot, it already has, all these "Wii Wii" jokes are pretty stupid.
What of the mainstream crowd Nintendo is trying to pull in? You know, the people that DON'T play games? Say someone is working in an office and in a casual conversation, they say "Hey, wanna come over tonight and play my Wii?"
I'm not sure about everyone else, but when I invite someone over to play videogames, I typically ask "Do you want to play some games?"

Maybe some people say "Do you want to play some 360?" or "Do you want to play some PS2?" In that case, the person you are talking to already knows what game systems you have.

I remember one night my neighbor came over and saw me playing my DS. The conversion went something like this:

"What the hell is that?
"Nintendo DS"
"Nintendo wha?"
"DS. Dual screens? Nintendo's new handheld. The bottom screen is a touch screen."
"What? Really? What game is that?"
"Mario Kart"
"Cool. Can I try it out?"

Imagine that same scenario except someone comes over to your house to see you controlling a game with a controller that looks like a remote and is responding to the way you move it and hold it. How long do you think the name "Wii" will be relevant?

It definitely doesn't have the same natural feeling as saying PS2 or 360, but in time it will...or maybe we'll just say "Want to play some Nintendo?" ;)

Hmm... I expect better from them. And their first reactionary one was better (one of them riding Kirby on a rainbow yelling "Wiiiiiii!", the other unamused)

The Kirby Wiii was actually my personal photoshopping Wiii in there. The original comic didnt have any text. I just remembered it amidst the conversation yesterday. The facial expressions are fantastic, and they say to me. You might actually have a good time if you stop taking yourself so seriously.

Their news post puts it in better perspective. They also linked to that very reasonable blog I linked to earlier. From the comic, YOU SHOULDNT BE EXPECTING TOO MUCH from them. They need to be funny to their target audience. You shouldve known exactly what today was going to be like.

 Then I give you credit, sir. Genius.

I like all the stupid arguments people are putting up. "WHAT IF THEY CALLED IT THE NINTENDO COCKSUCKER, WOULD YOU GET IT THEN?"

I mean, really. Taking the name I call your mom every night. How is that fair to her marketing potential?

RF wins this thread for "This announcement has broken the internet."

Shock of the name:

Zing!!!

The name killed Nintendo.com yesterday. Newsarama.com, PVP, Penny-Arcade and MANY other websites all have PAGES worth of talk back.

This is the second (major) time that Nintendo has dropped info on people and this time it seems to be even more noticed than the controller.

Imagine the amount of discussion during E3. As internet gaming fans we'll get an incredible amount of info to feed on. For the non-gamer I'm pretty sure Nintendo will be attacking the press with more than just a press release (Can't wait to see more Reggie and Kaplan on TV).

We were set to call it the Revolution. Really, we were. But then, I accidentally took its name. Due to the deep magics, I am incapable of releasing a name I have taken, so wii had to come up with a new one. Oops. My bad.

BTW, I apologize that I was travelling all day yesterday, because this thread is easily thread of the year. Easily. There's enough comedy gold in here to build a few castles, with enough left over to craft some sort of boat.

I will now attempt to make a pun/joke that has not been made.

Please, Nintendo. Do not give Mario another water pack. It will just be too scary.

I dont know, chief. At this point nearly every conceivable joke has not only been made, but so many jokes have been made ON TOP OF THAT, that when it resurfaces, it seems new.

And this cycle happened with great fervor for probably 12 straight hours yesterday.

I got one...I heard that R. Kelly is going to be the new spokesperson of the Nintendo Wii.

I came up with a better name in less than a day.

Nintendo wanted to have a name that would mean something everywhere. They wanted something with "i"s because it looks like a remote. Wanted something different and cool.

The Nintendo iVi

The "i"s are silent, so it's just V. V is 5 in Roman numbers, most everyone on Earth should know that. Plus going to a store and asking for a "V" sounds a lot better than asking for the "We".

So let's call call it the iVi, then maybe Nintendo will use it! It's not too late!

I am so tempted to go to Gamecrazy and Gamestop and EB right now and ask to pre-order the Wii.

Me: Good day, shopkeep! I'd like your finest Wii pre-order!
Clerk: ....Huh?
Me: DID I STUTTER, MOTHERfuckER? I SAID I WANT TO PRE-ORDER WII. NOW SIT YOUR FATASS DOWN AND TAKE MY MONEY.

I'm thinking the level of wtf-ness that will appear in game stores with clueless employees is going to skyrocket.

Oh, and it will happen.

I remember trying to explain to one of the EB Games managers about the DS Lite, he didn't believe me about it.

But then people would call it the ivy. Or i-v-i.

And all that trailer proves, Strell, is that this wasn't a marketing blunder. The thing markets itself.

Yeah... when I first read it, I read it as "ivy."

Any publicity is good publicity. Everyone is talking about Nintendo right now and we aren't even at E3 and we haven't seen any games in action yet.

Exactly. Nintendo let's a small cat out of the bag and it's equivalent to a gold mine of talk time.

Look how much attention the Wii thread is getting already - really quite amazing!

Nintendo's "strategery" has done it again!

I disagree. Yeah, they're talking about Nintendo - in a negative way. Nintendo REALLY has to blow people away at E3 or else you're going to hear a lot of "first that Wii crap and now THIS? Ugh."

No... if people aren't impressed by Wii at E3, then the name will be irrelevant. It will lend itself to easier jokes about a crappy system, but that's about it. If people really like the system, then that's all there is to it. But everyone will WANT to see it to figure out why the hell it's named Wii, if nothing else.

I think the name is pretty irrelevant anyway. When people say "well, at least everyone is talking about Nintendo" its stupid because its E3 time - everyone will be talking about Nintendo ANYWAY, regardless of what the name is. Even as a non-fan I'm interested to see the Revolution/Wii/Whatever. You can't help but be interested when details of a new console are revealed regardless of how you feel about the company behind the console.

I didn't realize that MS or Sony were getting op-eds written about them in a lot of major publications since yesterday. But I could be missing something. Nor did I see any 400+ post threads in the Sony or MS boards recently.
I got one...I heard that R. Kelly is going to be the new spokesperson of the Nintendo Wii.
Yay!! I waited 20 fucking pages for one R. Kelly Piss joke.
"Hey guys, wanna come over to check out my wii?"
"One second...you have a..........WHAT?" *runs*
Should we give a prize to our one millionth variation on the "come over and play with my wii" joke? I mean, it's really not getting tiresome at all. Keep beating the horse. Maybe it'll get up.

Damn dude. Wii.

Ive been chewing it over for the past day and it still hasnt sunk. I understand what they are trying to do in establishing a unique brand name like 'google' 'yahoo' or 'amazon' but those names have some hard consonants and strengh to them. Wii is just... wiik. The REVOLUTION was a name that made you want to flip over your table, punch someone in the face then get a triforce tatooed on your arm. They better have a damn solid marketing strategy to convince the American public that its legit, because with a name like Wii people will find it easier to shove it aside as a niche novelty item. I still have undying faith in the system, but I hope the rest of America dosent dismiss it as a joke. The Big N better have some savage shit to blow our minds with at E3 if they want to make up for this, which I expect they will.
I wonder if Women's Entertainment Network will try to sue?
I don't get it? Is this like the Shaq jokes that aren't funny(well I like 'em)?
I wonder if Women's Entertainment Network will try to sue?
They already did. Nintendo settled out of court for an undisclosed sum and an agreement to include vibration in the controller.

Not to mention a little immature.

I actually think Fami-wii would be a better name. We put the we in family. Another one I thought of was, We have wifi. When I first saw the name Wii (in the GameRush thread) I thought someone mispelled wifi.

When the competition says, "We are better", well, you know what they're really saying. wink wink

If Nintendo has a good showing at E3, the other guys will be going wii, wii, wii, all the way home. har har

And is this forum going to put in a Wii icon every time someones types we/wii? That'd be cool. Sorta like the shaq-fu (he's a dumbass) one. Weeeee!

Imagine going into a store and a pretty sales clerk asks you what system you want. You say, "We". She goes, "Not a chance dorko".

Maybe this has been mentioned. but what if its just the initials?

They like 3 etter systems
NES
N64
NDS
GBA

ETC

So what if Wii Stands for something else?

I think the following snippet (from a GI interview about the name change) bears more importance on the success of the Wii than the name:
I would say 9:30 in the morning on Tuesday of E3 will be filled with surprises and I would just show up. Because there’s been a ton of speculation. Some of it’s right. Some of it’s not. We’d say that if that’s the only secret you’re expecting [that the nun chuck controller is also motion detecting] you’re going to be very surprised.
So it would appear that they've got more than one more trick left up their sleeves for E3, more reason they wanted to get the news about the name out of the way early.

W-I-I?
Not to mention a little immature.
"Oooh, oooh, look at me! Hey, everyone! I'm MATURE! Clearly, I refrained from making jokes and generally having a good time! See this stick crammed up my ass? It proves I'm more mature than the internet!"

...idiot. No one cares. Relax and have a good time. Wii all need to unwind sometime.
