Yes, It actually was
As for the sale...wtf? They're not doing swaps anymore? But...how am I going to get vol 7 of R.O.D? :(
If I don't trade it for ROD vol.1, I'll send my double of vol. 7 your way.

I'll be in touch, K?

Same goes to GuilewasNK- I'll find out if my sister is ordering, or see if I can talk my brother into Trigun. :D
i've found the haibane renmei box for pretty cheap somewhere (under $9)...can anyone recommend the box to me? is the art work on the outside and the quality of the box worth that price?
There's no real artwork to speak of- it's a light, textured brown all over, with the Haibane logo in the middle and some linework on the sides... think an old book. It's a nice, sturdy box tho', and it comes with an extra pencilboard (at least it's supposed to- no promises if it's used.)
Yes, It actually was
Well then... wow, some people got an amazing deal. In any case, it's no longer on the sale list, which means that they don't forsee getting any more in. It *could* happen, but it's highly unlikely.

Yeah, it's OOS right now, with status of "On Order From Manufacturer", and in the description it says "Eligible for Geneon Bountiful Bargains REMIX - Yes ". I'd love to get the artbox if I could.
As far as the R.O.D. TV complete set goes, does anyone know how many episodes that is?
26 episodes of unadulterated awesomeness.

Well, since you're raving about Read or Die, I guess I'll bite on that. I'll place the order tomorrow.

Right now, I'm looking at Read or Die 1-7 and Tenchi OVA 1, 3, and 4. Volume 2 is available at DVDplanet, who is having a 20% off sale, for $14.95 pre-discount.

Damnit, no ROD artbox. That sucks hard.

I have ROD TV 3-7 in my cart, but there isn't really anything else I want. :whistle2:k

I might throw in 5 Lupin The 3rd DVDs since I bought a few of those in the robert's anime corner Geneon sale... that's better than starting something like Heat Guy J and not being able to finish the st.
So I'm guessing you like Read or Die XD
No kidding.

On a different subject, I pretty much agree with Kirin's list (despite the fact I like ROD TV a lot less and I think it's missing a few suggestions of awesome shows like Legend of Black Heaven and Captain He(a)rlock). Having said that, I must give a bit of a warning about Koi Kaze.

Many people, myself included, feel the show is in very poor taste as the main relationship in the show is between a 28 year old man and his 14 year old half sister. I personally thought the show was pretty mediocre but the whole relationship aspect of it pushes the show from "meh" to "terrible" for me. If you're going to buy Koi Kaze, I hope you know what you're getting yourself into.

I ordered the following cds. I wasn't interested in any anime on the list.
Gun X Sword OST 1 and 2, Haibane renmei OST (Yoko Kanno), Madlax OST 1 and 2 (Yuki Kajiura), Memories OST (yoko kanno), Noir Ost 1 and 2 (Yuki Kajiura), Strawberry Marshmallow OST, Yuki Kajiura Fiction

Whoops, I think I actually put an asterisk there on accident. I enjoyed Koi Kaze quite a bit, but yeah, I totally know what you're talking about. Even I didn't feel perfectly comfortable while watching it.

Bottom line, though... R.O.D!!

I enjoyed the show a lot. As someone mentioned earlier in the thread, it made you think after it ended. My only problem was that they only slightly explored why she was so obsessed with her brother. And it wasn't until the very end when they visit the mother.

Also she was his full sister, not half.
Also she was his full sister, not half.
Oh, that really makes it so much better in my mind................

Yeah, Koi Kaze is certainly getting an out of context spot on my late night Shit Anime panel up in Jacksonville to horrify people

Nothing holds a candle to Eiken in the disturbing category. At least you can laugh at it though because it is so ridiculously absurd.

Be sure to mention Trigun and Weiss Kreuz, too!

It's not THAT bad. You're making it sound like a full on hentai flick. I thought it handled the touchy subject matter in a mature way.
It's not THAT bad. You're making it sound like a full on hentai flick. I thought it handled the touchy subject matter in a mature way.
I think that is the beauty of anime and manga. You can explore themes that may otherwise be too disturbing with live-action.
I think that is the beauty of anime and manga. You can explore themes that may otherwise be too disturbing with live-action.
Exactly. The show made me question whether what they were doing was really wrong. They were happy, and they were hurting no one with their relationship. So what's wrong? Now that's a whole other debate, but I'm just trying to say that the show handled the subject well enough that I had a lot of sympathy for the main characters.

I like Koi Kaze you just have to get past the bro/sis thing. Hell people its anime, if a kid can drive a 50ft robot why can't they do a show about incest. Anyways it was a really good show and it is really no way like hentai.

That's the thing though, it's not a real relationship and none of the complications of reality exist in anime. Koi Kaze exists to justify all of the lolicons out there in Japan in their incredibly sick addictions to what amounts pedophilia in animated form. The problem I have isn't just the content of Koi Kaze. It's the fact that Koi Kaze has all of these underlying justifications to destigmatize something that should remain stigmatized because it is inherently wrong. In my opinion, it doesn't matter how well it is handled simply because the ultimate underlying message of the show and what it is suggests outweighs the drama and the plot of the show (and the idealized ending) especially considering the intended audience for the show and manga.

And while I'll leave out Trigun (Grendaizer is a much worse show with similar content) because while it's not great, it's still an okay show, Weiss Kreuz is hillarious and will be tossed into there (as well as the 40 pound breasts of Eiken).
Anime noob question - I really haven't watched much anime at all. I've seen Ninja Scroll and liked that, and I liked Castle of Cagliostro (I think that's what it was called). I'm thinking of going for 3 sets with the 25 for $100 deal, but I'm not sure what I'd like. I like all kinds of action, whether it's shooting or robots, and zombies are cool. I really don't like the cutesy stuff. Recommendations?
If you liked Castle of Cagliostro, then at least try to get some of the Lupin the Third DVDs in this sale, as CoC was a Lupin the Third movie.

Does this mean that the voices for the main cast will change depending on which company makes the dvd?
I was seriously thinking of getting the movie packs at the DD sale, but I dont know if I can enjoy them as much if I have to get use to an entirely new voice/ delivery style.
I really enjoyed the voices on the tv series that they played on adult swim.
Yes, the voice casts are different. Funimation (who released the movie packs) used their own cast, Geneon (released Secret of Mamo and the TV volumes), Animeigo (released Fuma Clan), and Manga (released CoC) all used their own casts. Discotek has the rights to Fuma Clan and the third movie (Legend of Babylon), but they haven't announced what cast they'll use for them yet.

:whistle2:k

Not sure whether to get 5 Heat Guy J volumes, or the full Paranoia Agent and one Heat Guy J (first with artbox).

I haven't seen either but I decided I'd try something new rather than just get more Lupin (4-9). I need 5 more DVDs to go with the 5 ROD.

I'd say go with Paranoia Agent. It's an awesome show if you haven't seen it. I haven't seen Heat Guy J though I do know after this sale, those will pop right into the bargain bin where as Paranoia Agent probably will stay at full price.

Yeah, I actually played the laserdisc arcade game (Cliff Hanger) way before I got to see the movie. The game was pretty rad for its time.

I highly doubt that. That's like classifying any show or movie where characters have a relationship as porn.

But I'll agree to disagree lol. I recommend it as long as you're aware of the subject matter.

I think we are at that point of agreeing to disagree. It is something that a person needs to know going into the show before buying it.

That's the case with any kind of fiction, live-action or otherwise, and regardless of subject matter. Unless something is based on real events (Amy Fisher for example) then complications of reality never exist.

I will say this though, it's pretty cool a civilized debate broke out in a 25 for $100 deal thread.

It was unexpected.

Nah, it's really not worth. Thanks for the propers though. Just google "Nymphet + Seven Seas" for all your debate needs on this subject (though it's a lot less civilized and much more stupid, plus Koi Kaze is a much better handling of the subject then Nymphet). A debate really doesn't have too much of a place on a deal forum. It's just something worth considering.

Just a quick question for those of you who have experienced all of the past rightstuf sales. This is only my second one .

From looking at my first order it was on March 2nd.

My questions are, do they have these sales at regular intervals? - Can we expect another one in Septemberish?
Do they only do this when they have massive excess stock they need to get rid of
Or only when the owner is feeling generous?

What have the past brands been? I know the last one was ADV, but what were the ones previous to it?

I'm already contructing a mental list of Viz , Bandai, and Funimation stuff that would be cool to get. :p

I enjoyed Heat Guy J. Pretty cool setting, story, had a good dub.

If you haven't seen Paranoia Agent...I'd probably go with that. It may be pretty niche though...it has some "out there" moments. When I saw it on AS I enjoyed it though.

You do get a vol 1 art box + bonus DVD if you go with Heat Guy J, however (it doesn't say it comes with a bonus DVD on the page but it does; only holds half the series though). Both are pretty good series', so a good choice either way.

Both of the series' are mostly standalone episodes and things tie together at the end.

Heat Guy J's double box set can be bought for cheap at places like Electronics Frys. I think I saw the whole set for $40-50, which comes out to...$4-5 a dvd

No, these are not regular sales, and it shouldn't be assumed that they will continue to happen in the future. Sales like these are usually dictated by the studios themselves, when they have an excess backstock of titles that they need to liquidate for one reason or another. They then arrange this sort of sale with retailers like Rightstuf, and what we have now is the end result. The catalyst for the excess in titles in the first place is likely the Musicland bankruptcy that occurred last year.

The first sale of this type at Rightstuf was Geneon during the fall of last year, followed by ADV earlier this year. Now we're back to Geneon. Previous liquidations have occurred with Geneon and Bandai at stores like Big Lots and Dollar General, and Funimation has recently used FYE/Coconuts as well.
What have the past brands been? I know the last one was ADV, but what were the ones previous to it?
It's gone Geneon, ADV, Geneon. There was a solid year and change between Geneon and ADV, but ADV, Geneon 2 was only about three months. It's a really up in the air type thing. I'd say Funimation is due for one next (especially since FYE's just sent back /are sending back the overstocks of the 5 for $15 Funi DVDs).

I'd say we may see another one in September, but if not then, look for the next one around February/March.

Rei: Out of morbid curiosity, pro-Nymphet or anti-Nymphet? I think it's pretty clear where I stand.

This is only the third one. First was a Geneon sale, then the ADV one, and now the "remix" version with some new stuff that wasn't there last time (Magical Project S, Ultramaniac, Mahoromatic, Mao Chan, R.O.D., Dual, Fafner, Melody of Oblivion, Saiyuki Reload and some art boxes that weren't there before).

Some history:
First sale: Added some new stuff a few days before the sale ended: Ai Yori Enishi figures and art box, Someday's Dreamers, Ippo...

Second sale: To my knowledge nothing new was added. They pulled the plug on the sale early because ADV were douches and held back stock for their ADVfilms.com "sales" (speculation).

Doesn't look like anything else is going to be added to this sale honestly. If you want to keep up on potential "hints", check out the AnimeOnDVD forums as Shawne (owner of rightstuf) posts there often.

It doesn't look like there's a set schedule for when these sales happen. I do rather enjoy them though! Hopefully, they'll end up doing sales like these for all the major publishers. The ADV wasn't nearly as great as the first sale because most ADV titles can be had for cheap at Best Buy.

Rei: Out of morbid curiosity, pro-Nymphet or anti-Nymphet? I think it's pretty clear where I stand.
Definitely pro-Nymphet.

I also LOVED Koi Kaze. In fact, its one of my favorite animes of all time. And that's a pretty strong statement I'd say. The nature of the relationship made the drama even stronger, and the way it was handled was very realistic and mature. I was absolutely riveted from start to finish and have seen it several times since that first viewing. The dub is excellent too.

With that being said, I wouldnt recommend it to anyone nor would I show it. Just because of the subject matter, its something that most find "sick", "disturbing" and/or "disgusting". However, I believe the way the show was treated negated all of that and the relationship was very realistic in the way it developed.

Oh and is the ROD TV any good? I HATED the ROD OVA (it was soooo BORING)... so would someone that hated the OVA enjoy the series? Longshot I know.

I havent pulled the trigger on anything from this sale yet. I do want to add Haibane Remnei to my collection (have already seen it) and maybe Trigun (have NOT seen) but not much else really catches my eye.

For those wondering, I do love Chobits, Somedays Dreamers and quite a few others from this sale. I do wish that Paradise Kiss, Strawberry Marshmellow and other series were available though.

I didnt really care for any of the characters in the OVA for ROD and for some reason do not enjoy shows that are heavily action oriented. I prefer dramas/slice of life/romance shows and even comedies over pure action series. So therefore series like Paradise Kiss, Koi Kaze, Strawberry Marshmellow, Kamichu!, Rumbling Hearts, etc seem to resonate with me more than action shows. Though I hated Sentimental Journey, My Dear Marie and If I See You In My Dreams which looked like they were my thing, but werent.

I just remember being very very bored during ROD and just wanted it to end.

I also loved Slayers (such great characters), Najica Blitz Tactics (even more than Noir), Kiddy Grade, Rev. Girl Utena, Fruits Basket and many many others....

I'll probably go with the 5 ROD, 4 Paranoia Agent, and vol1+artbox of Heat Guy J, then. Once I convince myself I have $50 to spend on this stuff.

I really wish I could just spend $25 for the ROD... and I really really wish they had the Vol 7 artbox.

Well then, I have good news for you - R.O.D The TV focuses a great deal more on its characters, and while there's a fair amount of action, it's definitely not as non-stop as the OVA. Several episodes near the beginning of the series are very much slice-of-life, and it's these episodes that I love the most. The characters are super-endearing, and it's a joy to watch them interact with each other.

Oh, you like Slayers... that explains it - I find Slayers to be the very *pinnacle* of mediocrity, and most of its fans seem a bit... off. But you did mention Utena, so I suppose I can forgive you. ;)

I was pretty much ready to give up on the ROD Vol 7 with box comeing back in stock and get it somewhere else. But now Gad Guard 4 went out of stock and doesn't even have a check back message.
