Salty I need to re-do my profile in CAG4.0
As the original deal morphed into a game deal and guitar advice thread, I decided to place the original BB deal behind spoiler tags for a reference point. And I listed the current deals below. The guitar purchase is the most difficult part for us beginners, so read the advice in the thread

Too busy to read the entire thread? Then try these following posts for the guitar advice. Thanks to SmileyMcSmiles for all the help :applause:

Guitar+Bass Version*****

Original Version*****

Original DEAL behind this Spoiler
Bestbuy has a separate, two week flier for music gear and they're advertising Rocksmith game bundle+ Epiphone guitar for $199.98 and you get a $50 giftcard with purchase of the game/guitar bundle.

Ad is a bit odd in that they only list sku's for the game bundle and standalone guitar (#2633103, 2633149, 2273055), so they may be doing in-store bundling. Plus they list the game + guitar bundle as a 10 savings over buying everything separate

I'll let the musician CAGs speak to the quality of the guitar;)

UPDATE: Bestbuy finally got the site updated with the offer.
Link Dead
Like I said before, seems like they are doing an in-store bundle instead of selling the official Rocksmith guitar kit. Won't know for sure until it's bought

UPDATE #2: deal is definitely an in-store bundle of standalone guitar + game bundle. Guitar is an Epiphone LP jr with a cherryburst finish and no strap or picks are included. Asked about substituting a different guitar model but bundle price won't activate if you switch it out

Good info in this thread, thanks to all those who have been giving advice. I've noticed Rocksmith has gotten really mixed reviews. As someone who is interested in learning to play but has no experience, would Rocksmith plus a guitar from someplace like Guitar Center be a good place to start?

I notice their BF ad has Rocksmith for $59.99 and $25 off a $100+ guitar. Is this a good deal or is going through someplace like GS with the $50 Rocksmith and then finding another deal on a guitar online more advisable?

Hey etcrane, prior to RS my only guitar experience came from GH and RB. RS has been doing a good job of easing me into the different techniques. And Guitarcade mode is pretty much all about technique repetition.

I say try Guitar Center first and use the Bestbuy deal as a baseline. Never know what kind of offer GC will put together to keep you from buying at BB. I like the LP jr that I got from BB and it seems to have settled in now that I've had it for a while. But the Dean xmt does seem easier to play since it's not all lacquered up.

But as has been stated you can find better model. Really depends on your preference and how much you want to spend

Also thought that GC blackfriday ad had a guitar on sale for $99. Don't know the model but if they apply the 25 credit to that then you're only spending 75 for a new guitar

If you find out what model guitar is on sale for BF, post it here. Might help out someone else

Awesome, thanks for the advice. I'm still kind of on the fence but I think I may take a pre-BF trip over to Guitar Center and see what they have in stock and then take a look at their BF ad again too. I've also been mulling over renting a guitar for a week and then trying the game out as a sort of 1/2 investment before throwing down more cash of a better guitar.

No problem.

Just remember to ask for the real tone cable (the game's pack-in cable) if you rent it. Otherwise you gotta buy your own cable to play

And I looked at GC's black friday deal for the 99 guitar. Pretty sure it is the Les Paul Jr. The sunburst is the model that gets packed into the official Rocksmith bundle and the Ebony is the same model in a different finish. For comparison, the Bestbuy deal had the Les Paul Jr in a cherry sunburst finish
@ crazedracer Thanks for the tip on those gamestop codes. Asked at my local shop and they let me have one

I'll give it a try, but no promises. They scanned my powerup card to give it to me. Don't know if they're tracking that sorta stuff

Edit: confoo, need to know which system. Codes are console specific
ALSO, if you have a cool GameStop around that you frequent, it is worth noting that they still have the pre-order codes in their computer for RS (so that they can print them in case someone lost theirs or something)... My goos GS had NO issue printing me a code for the 2 preorder songs (Free Bird - Skynyrd and BodySnatchers - Radiohead)... More importantly, for those of you that may be buying a guitar, they can also print the OTHER preorder bonus - which was a $25 coupon off a guitar at Guitar Center - combined with any sales that GC runs (they usually do big sales at ALL holidays), you could get a good guitar that you can actually try out in store for pretty cheap.

What is this now? Gamestop has Rocksmith codes?!
Look at crazedracer's post

stinks that they took such good songs out for preorder bonuses, guess I'll have to wait for a xbox market place sale on them.

thanks rbarba

If you can, cool, if not no big deal. I can just buy the radiohead song. 360 please.

Cool man, thanks rbarba4! It's worth a shot. And I agree...what's with taking out 2 songs for preorder bonuses that imo are better than a lot of the songs in the game?

Props go to crazedracer. He let us know it was possible, even if it is YMMV. I just gave it a try and it worked

Off topic: does CAG have a subforum for music. The more I dig into learning guitar, the more questions I have. And it might be fun to get a Rocksmith self-help group going to share experiences and progress

Sorry man, got rejected on the double dip. As he explained it, corporate tracks this sort of stuff and it gets fishy when they issue too many duplicate codes to the same person

that's cool. thanks for trying!

I dont shop GS enough to walk in and ask for it.

Quick reminder, BB deal ends Saturday (today). So act fast if you're buying there or if you're planning on using it in your dealings with other stores
here is guitar center BF ad. there is an extra 15% on friday but i cant read the scan. Not sure if it excludes clearance.
http://slickdeals.net/blackfriday/deal/guitar-center/957#ad-scans
Still fuzzy, but I think the bfads version says that it excludes used , clearance, price matches and vintage equipment. And it's not combinable with BF deal or Thanksgiving weekend deals.

But if you buy RS from them you still get the $25 credit towards a guitar purchase.

Probably a good idea to browse their goods before BF just to get an idea of what you'd like
Let's say Rocksmith game only is $70. That means the guitar is $80. Do you think I can get a decent guitar that's better than the bundled one for $80?

I've been meaning to learn to play guitar for like 25 years.
Add $20 more to that budget and you're set. There's a bunch of decent $100 beginner guitars. This First Act one is just awful though. First Act's cheap lineup is unbelievably crappy.

It's been a while since guitar advice dominated the thread, but hopefully I can still get some help. After busting out at BB Trying to get a left-handed guitar(why did I ever expect anything else?!), I found a GC in my area. I wanted to see in person the Epiphone Les Paul, but then noticed a lefty Fender Stratocaster on the used wall. It was a basic black that they labeled a 6.0 (couldn't find any explanation in those terms online, though, so I don't know how old it is) and it appeared to be in great shape - no scratches or dings like many of the other used ones. It was $250 vs. $180 or so for the new Epi.

Any suggestions on one over the other and if I should go for the used one, any red flags that might give away that it's a secret lemon? Thanks much!

Also, when I asked the GC guy for a recommendation, he suggested that I force myself to play right-handed, which I thought was really weird (and kind of made me not want to buy there...)

^ what kind of sound do you want? If you want it to sound like a single coil get the Strat, if you want it to sound like a humbucker get the Les Paul. Strat = Jimi & Stevie, Les Paul = AC/DC type tone. As far as red flags, you would need to play each and see how they sound/feel. I prefer Les Paul due to the rosewood vs maple fretboard and shorter scale.

Honestly, you'll probably hear that recommendation a lot. I am lefty, but play right handed. It's easier to find guitars and probably just as "easy" to play like that. Not to say that there aren't/weren't some great left handed players - Cobain, Iommi and Hendrix, to name 3. And lefty guitars are MUCH easier to find now than they were years ago. Do what you feel comfortable with. Sit down in the GC and finger a C chord and move to a D chord on both and strum. You'd be surprised to see what feels more comfortable. I still air guitar lefty , but I think that reversing the chords fingerings every time I look at tab, etc., would have been harder if I was to have played lefty.

I'm a lefty, but I prefer playing with a right-handed. My left hand is far faster than my right so it actually makes it easier to play.

I seem to have better finger memory in my left hand. While I'm not blinding fast, I do a better job reaching and speed switching than I think I'd be able to do with my right hand... I think as turned around as a righty would feel on a lefty guitar, I feel better on a right handed guitar. I think that's what the guy at GC knew, he just explained it skyline poorly.

As a righty who has just started playing, I can't help but think things would be easier if I was using my right hand on the frets (in other words I should be using a left handed guitar). I mean my right hand is more dexterous than my left, so shouldn't the dominate hand be the one doing the heavy lifting?

But what do I know, other than RS is killing my index and middle fingers.

This thread talked me into buying a guitar again for the first time in over 10 years. I appreciate everyones insight and I ended up ordering the Dean Vendetta today and bought the BB exclusive rocksmith paid just under $170 out the door...about $10 bucks more than for the junior epiphone. Thank you

Mentioned how my friend was looking at the SG Junior. Well, she did buy it afterall. Got a chance to try it out in RS and I was really surprised at how light it felt. I even went and weighed it; only a pound difference between it and my LP jr. And I found it really easy to play. Pretty standard equipment like the Les paul jr but the thin neck and beveled edges of the body make it really easy to use

Not meant a a recommendation. It just left me with a positive impression about its ease of use. You gotta decide if you like the feel and sound. My friend sure loves it. She could never get comfortable using the LP jr or the Dean

Sweet! :D

Some advice though...If you're going to keep the guitar primarily out in the open on a stand, make sure you keep it away from open windows (especially during hot summers and cold winters) and away from heaters/vents. Any direct contact to extreme temperature changes (and extreme humidity) can/will cause variable deformation of the wood (severe contraction and/or expansion). I've seen everything from simple bowed necks that require a readjustment of the truss rod, to outright cracked necks and bodies.

In other words...it's not a good thing....at all.

First thing I'd do Confoo is tune the guitar using Rocksmith's in-game tuner (I assume tuned to standard E). After all the strings are properly tuned to standard E (E, A, D, G, B, E) , I would finger every note on the fretbaord for every string (one at a time). If the note has a clean resonance, it's all good. If any particular note has a rough, twangy sound with little to no sustain, that's what's called fret buzz. A little fret buzz can be OK, but if fret buzz severely affects more than a couple notes, the guitar will need to be adjusted and re-set (neck/truss rod, tremolo bridge/bridge saddles) and intonated.

Let me know how it goes!

What are you talking about smiley? humidity, long term exposure to sun and temperature changes?

I'm gonna learn how to play Hey Joe, set my guitar on fire, and walk out of my living room.

Rock and Roll baby! ROCK AND ROLL!

I was a bit bummed when I went into Guitar Center today. I spoke to a few people and said that I was a beginner and hadn't ever played the guitar before, but was looking for a good starter guitar and they instantly threw me at the $500 and up models.

I have no problem spending more money on something when I know, without a doubt, that it's something that I'll stick with forever, but I'm jumping into this without much background (I played the drums for about 5 years in the 90's, but never touched a guitar.)

Having said that, I'm looking at the Vendetta XMT or the Ibanez RG120. Hopefully I'll get a better sales person on Friday when I go look to pick the game up with Rocksmith.

That sucks to hear man...but it isn't surprising. Starting way back when I was 19, I worked in practically all the ma & pa guitar shops near me. Within those years, I had the opportunity to work in a Guitar Center that was about to have a grand opening. Despite all that I had heard and was warned about working at a GC, I decided to see for myself...perhaps out of sheer morbid curiosity.

I endured training, which took place in a conference room inside a a nice hotel. I met all my co-workers, some were cool...some seemed shady, the kind I not only wouldn't buy anything from...but even be friends with. The training (or programming) that took place in there made me laugh and shudder. I won't go into detail...but they try to program their workers via a training program on laptops, and turn them into douchebag-like salepersons. ..the kind you obviously experienced today. Suffice it to say, I left before the store was even finished...and went back to work in another ma & pa guitar shop.

And during the holiday rush period...expect their douchebaggery to go to 11.

If you don't have a ma & pa shop and have to go to GC, that's fine. You just have to go in there knowing what you want and be assertive about it. Just because you're a beginner doesn't give them the right to abuse and take advantage of an unknowing customer. That's just bullshit.

If you are still getting grief from them when you return and have no other options...I suggest either buying online from them or musiciansfriend.com (great customer service, they are like the Amazon of online musical instrument shopping). Or, you can even get guitars straight from Amazon themselves...

Here's the Dean Vendetta XMT (it's now $121.26, but the price will go back down I'm sure, still a great price):

http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-list...p?ie=UTF8&qid=1322108189&sr=8-1&condition=new

Here's the same from GC online for $99:

If you need any more help or have any other questions man, just let me know. That's what I'm here for. And remember, when you go, just know what you want...and let them know what you want. Don't let them derail you from your decisions. All they are doing is trying to either reach their quota or fatten their wallets with commission from sales they know certain customers don't need.

Thanks for the help, Smiley.

Which guitar do you feel is a better entry level model, the Dean XMT or the Ibanez RG120? I don't mind spending a touch more if the quality is that much better.

Yeah no problems man. It's really a toss up, you can't go wrong with either really for an entry level guitar. In fact, they both just aren't great entry level guitars...they're good guitars in their own right. I remember my first electric guitar cost more than either of these and was the heaviest and most crappiest quality of a guitar I've ever played...to this day. but I still loved it as it was my first. ;)

Ibanez are known for their flat and thin sculpted necks. This can be either good or bad, depending on the personal preferences of each individual. Which is why it's always good to get hands-on with a guitar before you buy. Don't worry about looking dumb for not knowing how to play. It's about comfort. Sit down, lay it across your lap and grab on to that neck. Give it was few strums. Get a feel for the thickness of the neck and how it feels in your hands. It also uses Agathis wood for the body. Agathis belongs to the Alder family of woods, but it's the cheaper and lower quality step-cousin...it's OK, but not considered a great tonal wood...unlike Alder, which is a great wood, but reserved for more expensive guitars.

The Dean Vendetta uses Paulownia, which is a better wood than Agathis, IMO. It's lighter and provides better resonance and a warm tone.

Like I said, you won't go wrong with either really. But if I had to choose just one between these two, I'd go for the Dean Vendetta. The humbucker pups are of better quality, as is the tremolo bridge. Not to mention it has a better finish (Satin Natural or Translucent Black) and looks more bad-ass all around. ;) \m/

EDIT: Here are two reviews of both guitars for more in-depth info.

Ibanez RG120: http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/reviews/electric_guitars/ibanez/rg120/index.html

With the 15% off coupon at Guitar Center, I don't think I can go wrong with the Vendetta XMT. I'll be ordering that one from Guitar Center's website.

Thanks for the help. I'll let you know how it all goes as I start messing around with it.
Ah crud. Looks like they increased to 8 bucks. Now to decide if I go to GC for their 2fer 10 deal.
BBY has a stand for $4 I believe.

Has any one used one of those ipod connectors with their guitar? I want to get one of those too so I can practice without an amp or the game. Any recommedation is welcome.

In all honesty, if you have the money to spend, then I would recommend going with a nicer model. Nicer guitars hold their value better so if its not something you stick with you can always turn around and sell it at a decent price later on. If you buy something really cheap you will have a rough time getting anything for it. Plus, learning on a nicer model is, IMO, superior to learning on a cheap model. If you dont have the money to spend then....well, obviously this becomes a completely different issue and going the cheaper route would probably be the best idea.

I'm leaning towards your thinking. I think I rather spend a little more to get something nice so I at least have a better chance of selling it if it doesn't work out. I'm leaning towards the Squier Affinity Strat. $60 more than I want to spend, but it's using Amazon credit so it's not as bad. Plus I think I would have an easier time selling it. However I'm going to look at some other guitars too and peek at some auctions to help gauge which one would be worth more used. Rather hedge my risk on this at first.

Thanks for the tip. This works out well, especially since BB is doing free shipping. Plus no extra trip to GC

Dug thru BB's black friday deals and found that they have the GHS Boomers on sale as well. The 5-pack is 12.74 and I think the single packs are 2.84 and they also get free shipping

And while not the Dean Vendetta XMT, BB has a different Dean on sale for BF. It's the EVO XM on sale for $79.99 plus free shipping. Anyone care to critique and compare it to the Vendetta XMT?

Squire Affinity Strats....Squires in general are not what they used to be, for many, many reasons. Also, please don't fall into the trap of thinking that paying more automatically = a better instrument. Truth be told, the Dean Vendetta XMT is by far a superior instrument than a Squire Affinity...and for less. Better materials, better craftsmanship.

Now, if you're someone that really believes they will stick with the guitar and want to make a more long-term investment with a truly superior instrument, be prepared to pay more than just a $60 premium. A lot more. But it simply isn't necessary.

For someone starting out, you only need something that works well. That's it. I've dealt with people and co-workers that barely have started and spent way more than needed, not only on their guitar...but on amps as well. For instance, one guy ended up buying a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier half-stack. This is an outstanding amplifier...but the guy didn't even have the foggiest idea on where to begin with it. I guess he bought it because he thought it would make him look cool by being able to hit a power chord and shatter windows and blow people's hair back.

Too much too soon.

Keep it simple. A great guitar player can make even the shittiest instrument sing like an angel. That is a saying I was told from a dear friend that I will never forget. Basically, the guitar itself isn't what defines the player...the instrument is only the vehicle the player uses to channel outwardly the passion within. I really hope you all have fun with this....and in time you'll see that' it's a hell of a lot more than just a series of exercises and memorization. It's about release, from the gut, from the heart, from the soul. It's a reward you honestly can't place a price on. Cheers! \m/

What's up bro!

You're officially the first to ask for amp advice...and I'm here to help. Without a shadow of a doubt, and not just because I have one myself, the best amp you can start out with right now is this....

http://www.amazon.com/Line-Spider-I...WBIM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1322233846&sr=8-1

A Line 6 Spider15 watt(er).

Why? Because it kicks ass, it will give you all you honestly need and more. It's not just for beginners, it really is a compact powerhouse. It will give you all you need for any play-style that suits you. Clean channel provides clear/warm tones....all the way to variable levels of gain. From muddy blues to hard-crunching metal tones. And unlike other amps of this size, you also receive the benefit of other various effects such as Reverb, Phaser (think Eddie Van Halen tones), Chorus, Echoes, and a couple more I forget (sorry, still have guest and we're still drinking). Also, channel switching is easy on this thing...I really can't say enough about it.

I remember telling Confoocious about my first amp. A small radial dial switch, D-cell battery powered amp I could latch onto my belt line. It was called the G-Blaster if I remember right...really ghetto...but really righteous as it was the first amp, along with my first electric guitar my mom bought me ages ago.

Sorry, you guys bring the good years back...lol.

Seriously, get this amp. It's affordable and it's honestly a piece of equipment you will keep for its awesomeness and portability for some time to come. I love mine...and that's not just the beer talking.

But if you'd rather go for another amp or want to hear about other options, I'll still help you out...I promise I won't take offense. ;)

Just to add to the advice... I have the Epiphone Les Paul Special II, so I'm not sure if the bundled one is exactly the same or not. However the one I have is pretty nice, though I do have a couple small issues. Remember it was bought separately...

I went through two guitars initially and finally they just offered a 40% rebate to keep it and fix it myself. First one had EXTREMELY loud buzzing and the paint and fret board were messed up. Second one the nut was far FAR too low and even after raising it a few of the strings ring while playing. Buzzing was normal though and paint job much better. Only other issue I have are the strings are VERY close together so if you have bigger hands or having a hard time using a pick this will make it much more difficult.

Thanks for the advice, Smiley.

It's on the top of my list for amps now.

Enjoy the beer, and have one on me. Wish I could join you for one, as I'm at work. Damnit.
