Salty I need to re-do my profile in CAG4.0
As the original deal morphed into a game deal and guitar advice thread, I decided to place the original BB deal behind spoiler tags for a reference point. And I listed the current deals below. The guitar purchase is the most difficult part for us beginners, so read the advice in the thread

Too busy to read the entire thread? Then try these following posts for the guitar advice. Thanks to SmileyMcSmiles for all the help :applause:

Guitar+Bass Version*****

Original Version*****

Original DEAL behind this Spoiler
Bestbuy has a separate, two week flier for music gear and they're advertising Rocksmith game bundle+ Epiphone guitar for $199.98 and you get a $50 giftcard with purchase of the game/guitar bundle.

Ad is a bit odd in that they only list sku's for the game bundle and standalone guitar (#2633103, 2633149, 2273055), so they may be doing in-store bundling. Plus they list the game + guitar bundle as a 10 savings over buying everything separate

I'll let the musician CAGs speak to the quality of the guitar;)

UPDATE: Bestbuy finally got the site updated with the offer.
Link Dead
Like I said before, seems like they are doing an in-store bundle instead of selling the official Rocksmith guitar kit. Won't know for sure until it's bought

UPDATE #2: deal is definitely an in-store bundle of standalone guitar + game bundle. Guitar is an Epiphone LP jr with a cherryburst finish and no strap or picks are included. Asked about substituting a different guitar model but bundle price won't activate if you switch it out

Good deal, but like the fate of all music games, this is fated to end up in the bargain bin or at Big Lots within a couple of months, I predict. Music games are hot, but niche, and they take the dedication, time, and work of a strategy Role Playing game to master. (100s of hours), and even after you've mastered them, you still haven't scratched the surface.

I have been looking for a reason to put my squire strat to use after only learning like 2 notes in a year lol. Unfortunately, Best Buy decided to send me this months magazine on the 21st and the coupon expired on the 23rd (Something i have to bring to their attention tomorrow). Hopefully the deals on this game will continue. I don't think it's worth $80 but if the prices stay down, i will jump on it.
What thickness guitar picks are recommended for beginners?
That depends on your style of play or what you think you would want to play. When I played more Metal stuff I used a very thick pick but for more leisurely strumming songs I use light picks.
What thickness guitar picks are recommended for beginners?
The best ones to start out with are either light or medium picks. They won't give you as much resistance when you strum.

Tough.. but it was only 20$ off. I would've gone with the GS copy for 50$. I picked my copy up on Friday and I love the game. I just wish I had more time to play it (got a lot of schoolwork in the next 3 weeks unfortunately).

Sounds like you're talking about playing guitar - something actually tangible - not playing a RPG. Oh, that's right - this isn't a plastic guitar game - it's teaching you to play a real guitar. While I agree that the plastic guitar games are COMPLETELY over. This game is far above that. I think the people that get it are getting it to actually learn the craft of guitar. There isn't much "game" there...

I don't think it's going to sell MW3 kind of numbers, but I doubt it's going to be $5 at Big Lots in 6 months, either.

So three sizes to get with the BB deal are 0.60, 0.73 and 0.88mm?

Did a quick Target run and saw that they have a "Temporary Price Cut" on Rocksmith to $69.99. Obviously not as good as other deals but may be worthwhile if you have Target giftcards.

And Guitar Center has a 10% off coupon, on their site, that expires today. Almost got me to buy an amp. But held off until I develop some semblance of skill
What thickness guitar picks are recommended for beginners?
Sounds like you're coming into RS like me. In that I had NO experience with a real guitar. You won't know what feels right until you use it for a while.

So start with something around .80 mm and see how it goes. I've switched to something a little heavier only because I couldn't get comfortable with the .8, but this was after some 20-30 hours of play time. I need better resistance with the strings or else I lose track of the string I'm strumming. And I also found myself overstrumming and hitting the string beneath the one I wanted

I'm currently on a 1.5mm pick and it just feels better to me. It's brought me under control some. But it may not feel right for you. Just put some hours in using one size and go from there.

Yesterday was fantastic, went to a pawn shop and they sold me this guitar and a lil amp for 45 bucks....

457173913.jpg

Then i went to gamestop for the rocksmith special. This game is hella fun.

Amazon comes through again. Gave me free shipping on my Dean Vendetta, and it arrives tomorrow instead of "wednesday-friday". Although Wed would have been fine since I'm sick. I just need some picks, a strap and a stand.

After reading these post and seeing your guitar from the pawn shop, I am so close to buying this game. I bought an acoustic-electric about 2 years ago with the intention of learning to play guitar and ended up giving up after a few months. This thread is getting me stoked to start again.

Well darn, guess I waited too long. I had the Rocksmith game in my cart and while trying to check out, it bombed out. Guess I should have started the process a little earlier to keep from hitting the deadline.

Edit: I was actually able to complete the transaction at www.ebgames.com instead of gamestop.com. Thanks to all for all the great advice!

OK, this next deal is a bit screwy.

Toys R Us CM sale knocks 50% off Rocksmith (down to $39.99) when you buy one of the following games at $59.99 (NFS the Run, BF3, MW3, AC Revelations). Currently works online. Took it to the final step of checkout before paying and it kept the discount.

Decent deal if you were planning to buy one of those other four games

Heck yeah, thats what i did. I was reading the thread and contemplating. Then went to the pawn shop and was like, hell for less then a hundred i get a nice guitar and the game. I cant lose.

Trust me, i rarely go to pawn shops...not a fan. But i figured on a used guitar, it should be solid. When i went in, the guy was nice and let me try out all the guitars on all the amps. secured that it worked and that i got the guitar i wanted. ALSO, keep in mind. PAWN SHOPS want to move product they will cut you deals, bundle and always come down. *casts +15 speech on you* now, go get em.

Update, played the game for about 2 hours tonite, finger tips hurt haha. Love the game though, song selection is great. at first i was scared that i wouldnt like the songs i had never heard but having to actually play them, makes you respect them. ROCKSMITH is badass.

Wow, thanks for the heads up buddy!

I want to see more of other peoples guitars!:applause:

I also picked up this game yesterday and my fingertips are hurting a bit and I have been playing guitar for a few years lol. Probably played like 3 hours straight haha.

Mostly only played power chords before so hopefully this game can teach me some new tricks as I play along.

So far I'm digging it, just get a little confused with the colors of the strings.
So bought this game for $50 from Amazon and looking to pick up a guitar. Seen the Dean Smiley recommended went up in price a little but seen this one for under $100 http://www.amazon.com/Dean-Vendetta...YO0U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1322460843&sr=8-1 . Don't know crap about guitars so not sure what the difference is. Can anyone recommend it as a beginner guitar?
The description and equipment looks to be the same. Only difference is the finish. So you should be good
Remember how i posted the pic of the guitar earlier that i bought? well i decided to look it up on amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Squier-Fender...al-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1322462835&sr=1-10 and wow... to think i only paid 40 bucks for it yesterday and it looks and plays brand new! I am in heaven.
Nice find. Was it cheap because it was missing a string?

Seriously? On cyber Monday you're chatting about your guitars in video game deals forum and killing the posts for actual game deals?

I keep clicking this link hoping someone had a deal on the game. No one cares about your guitars.

Take it somewhere else please.

Amazon should have a lightning deal for RS at 12:15pm Pacific today.
Here's the hint: Guitar lessons have never been that fun!

Gamestop still has the
iconxbox360.gif
on their site for 49.99. The
iconps3.gif
is unavailable. Don't know about in-store price until someone reports it here.

Only other known deal is TRU, which requires you to buy another game to get RS for 39.99

EDIT: forgot to mention that Guitar Center has a 15% off one item coupon for Cyber Monday, good online or in-store.

This game is about learning guitar so why can't people post about guitars? If you're only interested in a game and not actual guitars go play rockband. Either way you come off as a Dick.

I used to own a bc rich warlock bass but sold it. I might pick up another bc rich but this time a guitar. Id really like to learn. I'm happy a game like this without plastic instruments came out.

For those that have played this game...any of you complete novices? I've never played a guitar in my life, am I still within the target audience?

Also, @Big St3ph3n - that guitar looks sweet. Definitely going to see if there are any pawn shops around here and see if I can find something.

I have never played a guitar before this. Everything about it made sense immediately. Now if only my damn fingers would do what I want.

Great to hear. I have concerns about my pinkie not being long enough, but looking at the videos, most people appear to have smaller pinkies than the rest of their fingers.
Yesterday was fantastic, went to a pawn shop and they sold me this guitar and a lil amp for 45 bucks....

Then i went to gamestop for the rocksmith special. This game is hella fun.
The only difference i see between yours and mine is the color but i wonder how they compare in perfomance

Very nice! I'm thinking of heading to a pawn shop for lunch, wish me luck!

Oh and by the way, it looks as if the deal is still working through gamestop.com as well as ebgames.com for the XBox 360 version.
After reading these post and seeing your guitar from the pawn shop, I am so close to buying this game. I bought an acoustic-electric about 2 years ago with the intention of learning to play guitar and ended up giving up after a few months. This thread is getting me stoked to start again.
I know right!!! Is there a forum outside of CAG for this game? I guess I could bing/google it. Would be sweet to talk to people familiar with the game, and guitar.

I think amazon shipped the game saturday, so two day shipping may arrive today!

Also the deal at TRU is pretty good. I looked through Amazon BM deals and it looks like at 12:15PM (pacific) it may be another deal on Rocksmith.

"Upcoming Deal
Guitar lessons have never been that fun!"

I got the $50 Amazon deal, plus paid $220 for a Jay Turser guitar and amp. The guitar is a Les Paul clone, and the amp has a lot of knobs and a built in tuner. The Jay Turser is rated better than the Epiphone Les Paul everywhere I saw. It also has a Tune-O-Matic bridge, not the typical Floyd Rose tremolo.

Any opinions on how I did?

Unlike my old guitar I had 20 years ago as a teen, this one has humbucking pickups, and no whammy bar to kill the tuning. My old one was a Strat clone. God I hate Strats... so stuck in the 80s. I hope to get a nice beefy "Dimebag Darrel" sound from those humbuckers.

If I don't play it, my 6 month old boy might someday.

Here's mine... A 2002?? Crimson Red Transparent Fender American Strat. They discontinued the color. This isn't a great pic. Too see the guitar up close is to love it. The Red is more of a stain than a paint job. You can clearly see the grain of the wood underneath the red. It's really beautiful.

RockSmith is definitely an Amazon Lightning deal now at 12:15 PM PST. I might end up canceling my taxed version from Gamestop that will take at least a week to get here and pick up one from Amazon that will be here within 2 days.

Also, love seeing others guitars, it is giving me the fever :)

I dusted off my old guitar this past weekend... I really need to start playing again and at the very least my son will probably want to learn. I have an amp and an effects pedal too but I really need to just get used to making chord changes and being accurate with my strumming/string picking again. I really wish my wife didn't hate it... I used to play while watching TV when I lived alone but not anymore...

Amazon deal is LIVE. Each version is $49.99

Act fast, already at 60% claimed

EDIT: DEAD, only lasted 3 minutes WTF!

Wow, glad I was waiting on the deal to go live. That sold out quick! Now to cancel my taxed GS order. This might be fun with the issues I have had with their site.

I used to own this exact guitar, color and all! great little fiddle!

Glad to see it went so quickly this time. I think it made it all the way through the hour on Friday.

I've heard such great things about the game, I just can't wait to get into it.

Oh, and my Dean Vendetta will be here tomorrow from Guitar Center. Now I just need to go buy a strap and some picks.
Missed the Amazon deal due to work...lame...
I am sure there will be plenty of deals to be found on this in the future.

So, it looks like the only RS deals are at TRU and Target. No one's mentioned getting it in-store at Gamestop today for the 49.99

If you're holding out for the PC version, gamestop is still offering the preorder bonus' of two free songs and the $25 voucher towards the purchase of a guitar. I'll update the OP shortly with the info.
The Epiphone Junior is back on Lightning Deals for $100 for those interested.

Know it's not as feature complete as the Dean, but I still dig the LP jr.
And my friend relayed the origin story behind the TV yellow guitar, as it was told to her by the store clerk. Goes back to the way white guitars looked when broadcast on black&white tv sets

I found out that I am unable to cancel my Gamestop purchase of the game. Instead of me sending it back, I would be more than happy to sell to you at cost +shipping. PM me if interested.

I appreciate the offer but my wife talked me into finding a guitar I like first, then getting the game. Out of curiosity...how much was the GS deal again? I may be able to justify this as a "savings" since I anticipate getting a guitar soon.

So... who's been playing this a decent amount? I got my copy today from Amazon, and I'm pretty impressed. However, the audio delay is crazy annoying! I've been reading up that some delay is inevitable, but it really destroys my original hope that I could just plug my guitar in and play with tons of effects through my surround sound. I can, but the delay is almost intolerable. It's much more manageable when playing the game songs, but I can't stand it with the AMP feature.

Has anyone been able to reduce the delay? Right now I just use HDMI for everything, which is apparently the worst way to go when it comes to lag. But I've been reading reports that going the optical out route doesn't help as much as you'd think.

Also, if they release songs for this regularly my wallet is in trouble, because this game is awesome.
