Salty I need to re-do my profile in CAG4.0
As the original deal morphed into a game deal and guitar advice thread, I decided to place the original BB deal behind spoiler tags for a reference point. And I listed the current deals below. The guitar purchase is the most difficult part for us beginners, so read the advice in the thread

Too busy to read the entire thread? Then try these following posts for the guitar advice. Thanks to SmileyMcSmiles for all the help :applause:

Guitar+Bass Version*****

Original Version*****

Original DEAL behind this Spoiler
Bestbuy has a separate, two week flier for music gear and they're advertising Rocksmith game bundle+ Epiphone guitar for $199.98 and you get a $50 giftcard with purchase of the game/guitar bundle.

Ad is a bit odd in that they only list sku's for the game bundle and standalone guitar (#2633103, 2633149, 2273055), so they may be doing in-store bundling. Plus they list the game + guitar bundle as a 10 savings over buying everything separate

I'll let the musician CAGs speak to the quality of the guitar;)

UPDATE: Bestbuy finally got the site updated with the offer.
Link Dead
Like I said before, seems like they are doing an in-store bundle instead of selling the official Rocksmith guitar kit. Won't know for sure until it's bought

UPDATE #2: deal is definitely an in-store bundle of standalone guitar + game bundle. Guitar is an Epiphone LP jr with a cherryburst finish and no strap or picks are included. Asked about substituting a different guitar model but bundle price won't activate if you switch it out

I appreciate all that you've added to the thread, but comments like this really turn me off.

I'm looking to have fun and try something that I've never done before and you're telling us that we're never going to be taken seriously because we bought a single piece of a equipment. It just comes off a bit douchey.

You'll have to forgive us for picking up something that is an entry level piece of equipment that allows us to play around with some of the effects that more expensive equipment will give us later.

I'm very happy with the Line 6 that I picked up yesterday as it gave me the chance to tune my guitar as well as access their online training site that gave me some lessons to take before I dive into Rocksmith.

Again, I thank you for all of your comments suggestions in the thread.

Yep - and NEVER buy a crappy, imperfect guitar that a noted guitar maker wouldn't use, modify it with a cheap humbucker in the bridge position and then think that you're going to become some kind of guitar God. I mean, really, who could be so fucking stupid???

Maybe this guy????

EVH_frankenstrat.jpg

Buy what you want. There's nothing wrong with starting cheap with an amp that gives you a few effects and moving up if you really like playing. There will be plenty of time to pick up new gear as you get older and better. The important thing is having your hands on the guitar and playing what you feel.

I'm just telling you, what I have learned. If you're playing in front of people, you want a tube amp. If you're just jamming in your room and want a ton of effects to mess around with, Line 6 is the way to go.

Tube amps are expensive. I even played on a Line 6 stack in public until I realized that I got ZERO tone and they sounded like a bunch of noise whenever you crank the volume knob past six.

As you said, Line 6 is an entry amp. They're perfect for learning.

Also, here are some more guitars for you guys. These are Jay Turser guitars, which are about the best knockoff you can get.

http://www.amazon.com/Jay-Turser-Jt...cal-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1322752206&sr=1-7

Here is one for LEFT handed people
http://www.amazon.com/Jay-Turser-Jt...cal-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1322752206&sr=1-8

I also recommend picking up one of these. It'll save you a TON of space and it'll help protect your guitar. Plus it looks pretty cool on your wall.

Not saying rush out and buy a Peavy 6505 or an Engl. We all had to start somewhere. No way would I advise somebody that just started playing to go out and buy expensive gear. I was just talking to the other guys in the thread. Chill.

It was the tone. No one that is looking at a Line 6 and a cheap guitar to play Rocksmith with is worried about what they'll play at their gig next week at the Verizon Center opening for Disturbed.

I'm personally glad to see so many people interested in picking up a guitar. If Rocksmith had come out 10 years ago, I would be pretty damn good by now. I hated lessons, sitting listening to someone rip a solo and then saying "OK, now go plink these three strings for the next week and we'll teach you how to play a G chord next week." Now I play a couple of hours every other night or so.

I feel like my "job", so to speak, in here is to help the noobs in the thread get some bang for their buck. If they get serious about the craft, they'll make their own decisions on gear in the future.

I completely forgot about this game, I am going to be picking this up tonight at the local gamestop but for some reason I can locate it on my phone but when I go online it doesn't give me the option for pickup@store. So I have to call them to have them hold it. When looking on the website, the guitar bundle will allow me to do the pickup thing but not the game itself with the cable.

I had a guitar class in high school and loved it but never really got back into it. It's been 6 years since I was a senior, and I figured I'd pick up this game and use one of my friends many guitars. I'll have to post up a pic of his newest one. He got it imported from china and it's a knock off of a $3000 guitar, can't remember the name but apparently they used to sell them in the states until the company that made the real ones sued and they were banned to be sold in America. The only bad thing is that when he got it, it came in a sweet case, but during shipping the neck broke off, but with some gorilla glue it looks like it's perfect and holds a tune.

I'm a tone nazi. I can't help it. In music, you get what you pay for. It's traits you pick up down the road. We all start somewhere.

I am too though. I thought Guitar Hero would bring a lot of people into playing, but it really didn't. It was so lame to see guys that could get 100% on expert songs in guitar hero, but couldn't play a basic bar chord on a regular guitar. Rocksmith is good for guys really wanting to learn. I never took lessons, for that reason. I was 13 I would always get on Ultimate Guitar and beat and bang on my poor old first guitar till I got a song right.

I've answered countless pm's. Encouraged people to buy a small practice amp so they will continue playing when they are sick of the game, and shown them a few things to help protect their instrument. From what I've seen, Dean is growing in popularity from this game.

They certainly gained a new customer with me. Mine should be coming in today!
If you check out the "Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought" section on Amazon on several of the Dean XMTs you'll see Rocksmith there!
I want to say that this thread had something to do with that. :)

I have owned many Line6 products and think they suck, HOWEVER this is not useful advice for beginners, which this thread is aimed at.

Plus your elitism is flat out outdated because the Fractal Audio Axe-FX smokes.

Yeah - I was definitely in the "Just because you can play it in GH or RB doesn't mean crap" camp. It just didn't lead to people wanting to play real guitars - I think for the same reason that I never got good - because lessons and practicing sucks. It's flat out boring.

And I am glad for the help that you (and many others) have provided to the noobs in the thread. Really, who amongst is wouldn't LOVE to see the next Kurt Cobain or Yngwie say that he got his start from a bunch of video game hacks on CAG? :applause:

Glad to see Dean get a little loving, too. They make good guitars - that don't cost $600 and up. For $99, I'd much rather have a Dean than have to add $40 for a Squier.

Anyway - I just got defensive because I hate to see someone not get a little Line 6 that would increase their enjoyment of their guitar because they think it makes them look like a poseur. As long as you have a guitar in your hands, you're not a poseur - you're a guitarist... Now where is the link for that Marshall stack that I wanted??? :D

Would those 10% off coupons that Best Buy tends to have work on the Line 6 15W amp? I cant remember if they exclude items like that or not. If it would work, it would be a good way to make the deal even sweeter at $90 whenever the next 10% off coupon comes rolling around.

So are you saying that these guitars are suitable for beginners with no experience? Because that looks like a more suitable price range for me to decide if I want to try or not.
Also, here are some more guitars for you guys. These are Jay Turser guitars, which are about the best knockoff you can get.

I also recommend picking up one of these. It'll save you a TON of space and it'll help protect your guitar. Plus it looks pretty cool on your wall.

This is kinda what I was saying with my Ibanez. Fender can get away with charging more for the same (or even inferior) thing because they have brand recognition. There are lots of guitars out there constructed just as well as some of the Fenders that cost less. I've been a fan of Dean guitars for years (I don't own one, but my dad has a Dean acoustic that he loves).

It's the reason the MIM Strat was my 1st electric guitar and why I didn't get the Michael Kelly (which is a great guitar) and the Ibanez until further down the road. It's just hard to tell people not to do it the way you did it though because at this point, they know as much as you did back then. The most we can wish for them is to do what gives them the most enjoyment.

Like I said, anything that gets them playing. Once they get deeper into it, they'll learn about different wood types and what type of head their amp has. None of us knew that stuff when we started out. It's always good to research your investments. Just don't let it bring you down or diminish your excitement in your purchase.
So are you saying that these guitars are suitable for beginners with no experience? Because that looks like a more suitable price range for me to decide if I want to try or not.
I haven't touched a Jay Turser guitar in about 6 years, but my roommate in college bought one (a Gibson SG knockoff) and researched them heavily before making his purchase. It was a pretty nice guitar and had a good tone. If you want to take the time, just look for reviews, compares specs, and see what people are saying. At least people in this thread are pointing you in the direction of some good cheaper names. Jay Turser, Dean, Ibanez, Schecter, Michael Kelly...there's a lot more out there than just Fender and Gibson. If you want to take the time to do a little digging, you'll find a really nice guitar. I promise.

Stay away from the first link - it's a 3/4 scale guitar. You won't be able to play some of the solos and the guitar will feel like your hands are swallowing it. The second one would probably be fine.
So are you saying that these guitars are suitable for beginners with no experience? Because that looks like a more suitable price range for me to decide if I want to try or not.
Just FYI, that first link is to a 3/4 sized guitar, which is aimed for younger children (imagine a GH or RB sized instrument.)
EDIT: crazed beat me to it.

Yes these are just fine for beginners with zero experience, especially for those on a budget. If you stick with guitar you'll probably want to upgrade this within a year. However, from reviews they seem to have quality control related issues, which might actually turn you off from playing guitar. If you can afford the extra ~$60, then the Dean Vendetta XMT (or even the XM) is a better choice (and more likely to hold it's value just a little bit more than the Jay.)

I got the game w/ cable today for $49.99 at GS :)

Game works fine, no lag when using optical for audio & hdmi for picture. My Home Theater receiver is an old one so it doesn't change automatically to adjust between stereo and 5.1 so is the game in stereo or surround? Dolby digital only sounds basically the center speaker; if anyone knows the correct format I will appreciate it!

I have been playing off/on guitars since a decade ago; I have a Gibson Les Paul & a Classical Valencian Guitar and can play some normal stuff. The game campaign mode is good if you already know some of the basics of fret movement; if you don't you will be moving your fingers between strings 2 much when you could for example just hold all of the strings with one finger to play 2-3 notes one under the other and the fingers moving from 3-5-7 etc. Don't know if they explain it in other modes I just played 6 songs in the campaign and they started adding up more notes pretty fast to each song.

I never bought GH or RB but did play it a few times and was an ok player, while here I was doing good because I already knew the basics.

This is a great game to practice songs due to muscle memory, not necessarily learn at least at the campaign side of the game; the tutorials I would recommend to the novices to do first for a few weeks before actually trying to play the songs for real so your finger movement can be done properly and you learn correctly from the start.

So far I have liked this game more than RB or GH; the venues and people in the crowd are definitely on the very weak graphical side but since you have to keep looking at the virtual frets all the time it doesn't really matter.

Don't buy the Epiphone Junior that comes in the bundle; at least get an Epiphone Les Paul Special II; anything less than that amount of money is just going to sound horrible and will be a waste of money. A decade ago Squier Strats were good for their price too (regular size). I'm a Gibson man myself :)
For anyone that doesn't know: Squier= Cheap brand of Fender & Epiphone = Cheap brand of Gibson.

If I buy a new guitar it will be a Carvin! My friend has 5 of them (he has 30+ awesome guitars, but he is rich & I'm not YET) and they sound AMAZING!

I recommend this game for a novice that wants to improve his/her skills and learn new songs in a new way PLUS you get a really good analog to digital cable for your guitar that you can probably hook up to garaband or any other computer app. If you never touched a guitar watch some videos on youtube about basics before going into the game.

Thinking about getting this.

I'm looking at the Dean EVO XM and the DEAN Vendetta XMT?

Should I get one over the other? I'm a total noob.

I picked this up for $50 at Gamestop tonight. I can't wait to check it out this weekend. I play bass, but this will give me a great excuse to bust out my B.C. Rich Bich!

There has been some going back and forth on amps..

How much are you all paying for a Line 6? Aren't they like almost $200 minimum?
I see one on amazon on sale for $99 and thats a good deal I suppose.

Thing is that the games effects aren't terrible. This is a HUGE advantage to you. You don't have to buy crappy pedals to see if you like them. You can virtually take them for a spin.

I started on a 15w practice amp. Cost like $50. It made my guitar sound worse than it was. It was wasteful to run any effect pedal into it lol.. but to just practice with and learn on it was more than enough.

I think a lot of people I see pick up guitar buy too much amp to start and not enough guitar. Your amp will only ever be your amp. Your guitar can sound a lot different depending on the amp it is plugged into. I feel a guitar is a better investment than an amp.

I would never tell anybody exactly how to spend their money. This is cheapass gamer after all, but a little extra money on the guitar can actually help your playing/enjoyment.
(intonation...ability to stay in tune...action level...material the fretboard is made of)

If I were to start all over again I would buy a Squire or an Epiphone for around $200 maximum. Since I have rocksmith to fuck around with on top on my amp I would buy a 10w-15 amp for 35-75 bucks and call it a day. If and when I enjoyed enough I would upgrade my amp first...move into a nice solid state amp for 300-500. Then if I really enjoyed it or had the money I would buy a serious instrument for 1g+.

Wow....I wrote so much more than I thought I would...

Pro-tip: Your local music store may have these items used for cheaper than you would pay new. This is less likely because of the holiday sales going on. Don't be afraid of used gear..especially when you are starting.

Just a heads up. Sam Ash has a holiday sale from 12/1 to 12/7. You can save 10 off $99, 30 off $349, or 60 off $699. You can get the codes direct off their website.

And realized I never mentioned which store had the $40 amp. This is a regional deal. You can get it in-store all weekend long if you're anywhere near the new Guitar Center in Orange, CA. More details on GCs website

ooh...this is exciting. I just read that on December 13th Rocksmith is releasing a 3-song Megadeth DLC pack. Songs include Public Enemy No. 1, Symphony of Destruction, and HANGER 18! I still haven't played this game yet (will this weekend), but is anyone else excited about trying to play Hanger 18?

Picked this up yesterday @ GS. Traded R&C:All 4 One & LBP2 from the PS3 bundle I picked up on BF, so no out of pocket cost. Sweet!

Played for a couple hours last night. Really enjoyed it once I ran the audio through an external speaker. (The audio lag was killing me through the TV). Remembering which string is which color is the only thing that's giving me trouble. Great game, though.

ah man quasar502, would have paid you for those games :/, were planning on getting all 3 tonight and enjoying the weekend

I have some Line6 gear I might consider selling since I don't use it anymore, maybe it could be of use to someone else.

I have a Pod 2.0 and a Pod XT, both fully upgraded. Haven't looked at what the going price is but feel free to make an offer. I also have the floorboard for each of them. I live in the SF Bay Area in case anyone is interested in an in person transaction.

$65. You can't go wrong. You can buy the guitar and game for about the price of a Dean. If you're just wanting something to learn on, those are fine for you! As long as you have something to hook up and play the game with.

Anyone looking at buying the Dean guitar may want to check out Guitar Center's current sale. They have a 15% off coupon good towards 15 different brands and Dean Guitars is one of the brands. Deal expires 12/04

And the Toys R us deal ends today if you're gonna try to pull that together

I finally got around to putting some time in today. Really neat learning tool.

Funny, I got that achievement when I was trying to play without the guitar plugged in.

Kidding aside, I love the game... what I'm finding is that my hands are really not made for power chords. It's going to take some serious stretching and practice to be able to pull off holding down the E (red) on the 5th fret and the A (yellow) on the 7th fret.

You're using index and ring fingers, right? I never use my middle finger for a power chord that skips a fret...

How would you play the G chord that pops up during Freebird? The practice mode walks you thru by holding down six frets. WTF?!? Am I suppose to grow another finger? Still trying to figure that one out

I don't know what the chord looks like, but is it a barre chord? You can play a G major chord starting with your index finger barring all 6 strings on the 3rd fret and then you can place your ring finger on the 5th fret A string, pinky 5th fret D string and middle finger on the 4th fret G string.

gmajphoto.jpg

An easier way to barre multiple strings is to rotate your index finger slightly so that the boney part of your finger is placing pressure on the strings and you don't have to start the barre on the low E with the absolute tip of your index finger, but move it upward so you can use more of the bone for pressure. You also don't have to put massive pressure on all 6 strings, only making sure to use enough to get sounds out of the low E, B and high E strings since the remaining 3 are fretted with your remaining fingers.

I know it's hard to visualize, but an easy way to do this is to make the E major chord shape using your middle, ring and pinky fingers and adding your index. You can see that if you remove the index finger from the picture above and slide down 2 frets, you have an E major chord.

Thank you! That does make sense. Gotta go back in and practice it. I be dumb:whee:
First, nice guitars! Second, how do you like Rocksmith? I'm figuring you already have a background in guitar since you have two nice ones. Also, I need more money to spend on all my hobbies!
Thanks, I'm definitely having a lot of fun with the game, although I'm not familiar with a majority of the songs. The interface took a little getting used to until I found the Invert option so it read more like tablature.

So I played Rocksmith tonight for the first time. I must say, it was pretty awesome. I play bass in a band, but always wanted to play guitar better. I never took the time to learn chords and all that, since I never needed to know it. This will be a fun way to learn some things and have a blast doing it.

And since I missed where everyone was showing off their guitars, I thought I would post a picture of mine now :D. It's a B.C. Rich Bich NJ Platinum Series with Seymour Duncan Distortion pick-ups. I love this thing!

alright, I've been experimenting with using an acoustic guitar with Rocksmith and want to chime in for those that were curious on using an acoustic. My guitar is a regular acoustic with no built-in pickup. I'm only a beginner so please excuse me if I use incorrect terminology. I did lessons a zillion years ago but hadn't touched a guitar since and it all disappeared.

I didn't want to drill holes for a pickup into the guitar so I got a magnetic soundhole pickup. I read that this kind of pickup is perfect for some one who is looking to plug in with a minimal investment and doesn't want anything to be permanently installed.

I first tried a cheap one called the KQ-1A pickup. It was $12 at Amazon.

41QuWOPqqPL.jpg

KQ-1A_2.jpg

Looked great. But I had a hard time passing the setup as Rocksmith kept saying to turn up the volume of the guitar which was of course impossible with this pickup. I thought about getting a pre-amp or using an old karaoke machine we had but decided to get a different pickup because more equipment also means more variables to the equation to diagnose in the case it didn't work.

So I got the Seymour Duncan Woody SA-3XL Adjustable Pole Pieces Soundhole Pickup. It has a dual coil setup to eliminate hum which intrigued me and it's reasonably priced as well.

41nDQYiPBEL._SL500_AA300_.jpg

woody-XL-installed.jpg

So I load up Rocksmith again and while the setup is much easier than the other cheaper pickup, I had to strum louder than I thought I should have to strum. I'm a beginner so I don't know exactly how hard you're supposed to strum.

Okay, normally, the Rocksmith cable is over 11 feet long and supposed to plug directly to your electric guitar's pickup hole. The pickup cable is 14 feet long so that's over 25 feet in length. Maybe that's too long. I used a stereo coupler to connect the 2 cables since both cables have a male end:
72321.jpg

I later thought maybe it'd be better to get a mono coupler for better performance and one is coming in the mail.

Anyway, I go to play for the first time, tuning, riff repeater, guitarcade, etc. And I just felt like I had to strum awfully hard. So I thought I'd be returning the pickup and getting a cheap electric guitar (but I love my acoustic!).

Then the next day, I went back and tried it again. Plugged in the guitar again. This time it played perfectly in Rocksmith! I didn't have to strum hard. It sounded good. I was doing okay.

I was still having trouble with the frets toward the soundhole. Would an electric help with that?

Anyway, I started thinking, what's the difference between yesterday and today? Is it that inconsistent? Hopefully the mono 6.35mm to 6.35 mm coupler will help a little. I know I did improve the way I pinched the string against the fret so maybe that's the reason.

I think I can totally survive with this setup. I still might get an electric so that I can play in silence (the whole house can hear me playing with my acoustic). I think I'll be keeping this pickup because it seems like a quality pickup and down the line if I wanted to plug into an amp, I can with this.

After my experience with the $11 pickup, I wanted to make sure I got one that reviewed very well and my pickup reviewed well at the guitar sites.

I saw the Seymour Duncan SA1 Acoustic Tube Acoustic Pickup which is appealing in that it has a volume knob and a very short cord with a female end so no need for a coupler and no worries about having over 25 feet of cord.

But now the electric is on my radar purely for learning purposes. I saw a Jay Turser 300 series guitar for $100. If anyone has an opinion on a cheap one, let me know. I just want to learn. No fancy sounds. I plan on going back to the acoustic for the bulk of my playing when outside of learning. The cheap ones on Craigslist were really beat up.

But yeah, if you're curious about using an acoustic, here's my anecdote.

I bought a Jay Turser Les Paul clone with a Jay Turser amp (with tune feature) as well as a Muza 500 12 in 1 distortion pedal, along with Rocksmith. Total investment only around $300! :D

I have not had a proper electric guitar in 20 years. The first thing I want to do is put into the Marshall GUV'NR pedal tone and try to play the complete Thunderstruck intro, maybe impress my wife. LOL

Ordered my guitar last night. Now I just need to find a good deal on rocksmith.

What would be a better tuner a snark sn-2 or a korg ga 40?

I am leaning towards the snark because of the ease of use. I have never touched a guitar so any advice would help.

I plan on getting an amp later once I am better and know I will stick with it to justify buying a more expensive better sounding one.

Another question whats the difference between a solidstate and tube amp? Does it really use vacume tubes?
Save some money at first and use the in game tuner.
Sounds like a plan.

What kind of cord would I need. Was going to order one along with some usb cables from monoprice.

Both tuners serve the same purpose. Everyone seems to prefer snark. I have 3 snark tuners and love them all. Tube amps really do have vacuum tubes in them. They generally sound better and livelier than solid state. They can help improve a guitar's tone, whereas with solid state amps a guitar will sound exactly as it is. Solid state amps are usually described as "sterile" sounding, and tube amps usually have more character. There are great sounding solid state amps and not so good sounding tube amps and vice versa.
