Salty I need to re-do my profile in CAG4.0
As the original deal morphed into a game deal and guitar advice thread, I decided to place the original BB deal behind spoiler tags for a reference point. And I listed the current deals below. The guitar purchase is the most difficult part for us beginners, so read the advice in the thread

Too busy to read the entire thread? Then try these following posts for the guitar advice. Thanks to SmileyMcSmiles for all the help :applause:

Guitar+Bass Version*****

Original Version*****

Original DEAL behind this Spoiler
Bestbuy has a separate, two week flier for music gear and they're advertising Rocksmith game bundle+ Epiphone guitar for $199.98 and you get a $50 giftcard with purchase of the game/guitar bundle.

Ad is a bit odd in that they only list sku's for the game bundle and standalone guitar (#2633103, 2633149, 2273055), so they may be doing in-store bundling. Plus they list the game + guitar bundle as a 10 savings over buying everything separate

I'll let the musician CAGs speak to the quality of the guitar;)

UPDATE: Bestbuy finally got the site updated with the offer.
Link Dead
Like I said before, seems like they are doing an in-store bundle instead of selling the official Rocksmith guitar kit. Won't know for sure until it's bought

UPDATE #2: deal is definitely an in-store bundle of standalone guitar + game bundle. Guitar is an Epiphone LP jr with a cherryburst finish and no strap or picks are included. Asked about substituting a different guitar model but bundle price won't activate if you switch it out

Alright, Toys r Us comes thru with a Rocksmith deal.

Buy the
iconxbox360.gif
version at $79.99 and get a $20 giftcard + 1 free month of Xbox Live Gold.

Don't see mention of the PS3 version in the ad

Can someone suggest a good device to record with? My husband likes to record himself playing the guitar than plays it back to play over like he's got some to play with. He does this a lot when inspiration hits him in the middle of the night. He also likes to record his jams. If the device can also be used for interviews that'd be great too. Thanks!

Bestbuy has a new separate ad for Musical Instruments. And they pulled a retread of the Rocksmith deal that started this thread. Only slightly tweaked.

Buy their package bundle of a Les Paul Jr (cherry sunburst) + Rocksmith game bundle
iconxbox360.gif
or
iconps3.gif
for $199.99 and get a free $25 giftcard + two free in-home lessons. Price good from 12/11 to 12/17

Also have a few different guitars on sale.

RS deal is on the last page.

I know this has turned more into just a guitar discussion than a Rock Smith discussion, but I figured I'd contribute something.

The Power Gig guitar bundle, you know, that awful game that came out last year that uses a "real" guitar, even though the strings are held in place and you only need to strum a single string for every song, has been crazy cheap everywhere. I've seen bundles for $25 at Best Buy earlier this year, and they are all currently $30 at Gamestop if you can find one.

While these are relatively small, mediocre guitars, they ARE working guitars for $30. I picked up a bundle back in the day solely for the guitar to use with Rock Smith, and they work just fine. For anyone completely beginning from nowhere, like me, you really can't beat a $30 guitar, especially if you're just using it for Rock Smith. They even come with an extra set of strings and picks.

as long as the guitar stays in tune with itself (e.g. the 12th fret plays the same note as the open string, etc) you should be good to go. way better to get a cheap guitar and decide later if it's worth investing more money in....besides, a really skilled guitar player can play a cheap axe just fine, but an expensive guitar wont make a new player any better...

also, the way rocksmith works (basically just needs a tone signal) means the quality of the pickups, etc are much less important....(imho).

I picked up the game at Target on Friday with the $10 GC at the discounted price of $69.99. The TRU thing is sweet too.

I'm enjoying the game. Started off slow but now it is really starting to pick up. Kind of wish there was a way to quickly pause the game to find out how to place your fingers on multiple strings for certain parts. As once I finally get my fingers situated, the moment has passed. Then when it comes up again, it disappears because I failed haha.

The duck hunt type game is pretty fun though. Nice little mini game.

It gets easier with time. I had never played guitar before trying the game and found that it was pretty difficult to get used to being on the right frets at the right time, but after playing more and more, I found that my hands were naturally finding themselves in the right place.

Also, I have only played 6 songs even though I've had the game for two weeks. I really want to work on some of the fret work, more than advancing through the game.
Also, I have only played 6 songs even though I've had the game for two weeks. I really want to work on some of the fret work, more than advancing through the game.
That Duck mini game is really good for learning where frets are. Sure it's only one string but still helps. If you do end up playing it, tapping (at least I think that is what it is called) works for this game too. Tapping is where you just tap the cord kind hard on the correct fret to play the note. This way you don't have to pluck the string and you can move faster I've noticed. Not sure if this was how the game was intended to be played or not. Plucking one string really isn't going to make a difference in learning anything on this mini game as the cord never changes.

I've messed around with Ducks a few times now, mainly to see how well I'm progressing and have found that my scores have gone up in the game by quite a bit just by practicing songs over and over again, and not messing with the mini-games all that much.

Again, I love the game as a learning tool. It's much better than I could have possibly imagined.
I'm a guitar noob. i want to purchase the game and figured id buy the guitar separate. This guitar is on sale for $99 and 15% off, so I got it for $84. Its my first time playing, so I don't need the Cadillac of guitars. Theres no feedback or reviews so Im a bit unsure.

I'm unclear on Amazon return policies for guitars. Is it a full refund within 30days minus shipping and partial refund if obviously well-used or after 30days? Because if I read BB return policy correctly, I can return within 30days like any other item which is more convenient for me. Except Amazon will have a better price.
Did anyone go to the Schecter sidewalk sale? If so, did you score anything?
Anyone, anyone...

Definitely a low cost way to try the game out. Just realize that you will have some issues because the Power Gig guitar maxes out at 19 frets. Not much of an issue when you're beginning, but it will cause problems.
The duck hunt type game is pretty fun though. Nice little mini game.
Yeah, Ducks was very helpful early on. Wait for Super Swing Baseball. That'll help alot more as it combines more skills. It'll have you moving across different frets and strings while throwing Bends at you

Bestbuy has a separate, two week flier for music gear and they're advertising Rocksmith game bundle
iconxbox360.gif
or
iconps3.gif
+ Epiphone guitar for $199.98 and you get a $50 giftcard with purchase of the game/guitar bundle.

UPDATE: Bestbuy finally got the site updated with the offer.
http://bestbuy.shoplocal.com/bestbu...3416&listingid=-2082219795&pretailerid=-99824
Like I said before, seems like they are doing an in-store bundle instead of selling the official Rocksmith guitar kit. Won't know for sure until it's bought

UPDATE #2: deal is definitely an in-store bundle of standalone guitar + game bundle, unless you get an experience similar to wizzy (see below). Good job wizzy. Guitar is an Epiphone LP jr with a cherryburst finish and no strap or picks are included. Asked about substituting a different guitar model but bundle price won't activate if you switch it out

Any news on the Amazon Gold Box deal today? I cant find the deal anywhere

Didn't realize this thread existed. Started a thread earlier today to say that I saw the Xbox 360 version for $53.85 yesterday at Sam's Club.

Right now it doesn't look like it's gonna happen unless they sneak it into the sale later.
Really hate when they don't preview all the sale items. Caused me to miss out on more than one deal.

Nice find. Probably YMMV but still worth it to see if your local Sams dropped the price. I'll update the OP

Where would the OP have gotten that information? I don't see any post on it anywhere. I want to buy it, a good deal will sell me tonight!

Put it in the OP as a heads up to check Amazon GB, since the deals were not known then. That's why I worded it that way

Right now best deal is TRU. But that ad only seems good on the xbox version
FREE DLC PACK ALERT!

I'm pretty sure these go for 640 MS Points each, but just checked the Xbox site and noticed these are all listed as FREE. Probably a mistake and won't last long.

Rock Hits 1

Rock Hits 2

Rock Hits 70s

If those links don't work, just do a standard search on Xbox.com for "Rocksmith" and you should see the packs lined up.
holy crap! thanks for posting this.

Wow, that's a great pack to have. Freebird by Lynyrd Skynyrd, Smoke On The Water by Deep Purple, More Than a Feeling by Boston, and Jessica by The Allman Brothers for free is a steal! Not to mention musically educational! ;) I really hope all of you guys stick with it, not just for the game, but to really see how much joy playing the guitar (or any other musical instrument) will bring enrichment into your lives and to those around you!!! \m/ :D

To be honest guys...your enthusiasm over all this has solidified my want for getting Rocksmith myself...I now just need a decent deal.

I know I'm a little over-enthusiatic about RS, but I can't help it. This mashup of learning guitar and video games feels so right to me. Would never had put in as many hours as I have if this were a traditional learning method.

Its got me spending more time on guitar sites than CAG. Even making a mental list of models I'd like to try out or own:drool:

Like in the other thread you created, these are actually videos, not songs. :p

Sorry guys.

I personally think RS is a great idea towards leaning and inching the GH and Rock Band crowd a bit further...at least those that are more inclined towards learning guitar in a more traditional fashion but wihile still maintaining a modern game design. But make no mistake, traditional methods will always remain a vital formula in some form or another.

For instance, it may not require everyone to be educated in traditional music theory. For most, guitar tab education will suffice.

Then again, there will be others that can learn by ear alone...impassioned by methodically learning by diligent practice and repetition. By learning from others--satiated only until perfection is reached. This is the category I fell in since I was young. I cared about only two things in life....my art and guitar. And it was more than just learning chords, scales, and arpeggios. It was about feeling right while playing. If it felt right...it would only then sound right.

fuck guys...I honestly couldn't imagine living in a world without music. That's the purest way I can put it.

I've been bamboozled! Well I had already decided to DL the RS songs after I worked my way thru the current playlists.

But I may dl Jessica right away. Wouldn't mind knowing how to play the Top Gear opening song;)

Didn't mean to imply that RS is better than other learning methods. But rather that this method hit the mark for me at this point in my life. It does a good job of keeping me engaged and wanting to push thru the roadblocks. Although this would have been amazing on the Atari 2600.

Funny thing about GH/RB was that I hit the wall at a fairly low level. Somewhere between Medium and Hard. I recognized that I could improve but wouldn't do it. There was no way in hell that I was going to put in the hours to max my skills on a fake guitar. So I stuck to having fun

I LOVE the look of the Dean Dimebag, but I don't think my wife would like to see my buy a second guitar this quickly, since I just bought my first when I bought Rocksmith.

Not a post to brag, but got 190,000 on the master mode for 'Next Girl' on my first attempt. It felt so damn awesome to actually play a song and not see the notes on the screen but feel like I knew what I had to do and then see that I actually did ok. Listening to my rendition after, it wasn't perfect by any means, nor would I expect that it would have been, but considering I had never played a guitar until 3 weeks ago, it was cool to feel like I'm learning how to play.

Just thought I would share that.

A lefty Dean flying V for $140?!? Hell yeah, I like - thanks much, rbarba

That's pretty cool. I took a different approach and kinda let RS take me for a ride. I can tell that I've improved greatly. But also know where I need alot of work. Basically suck at fast fret work; moving from string to string. Which means I also suck at fast chord changes. Just gotta put in more time

EDIT: oh, forgot to mention that I played a 6 song event last night. Did well enough for the Encore which was Good Enough. Let's just say that by the end of the song it was clear i wasn't good enough. Ah Rocksmith, nut puncher extraordinaire

Yeah, thought that lefty model would help some out, since LH guitars are usually priced higher. I'm guessing the sale has been pretty good because the number of available guitars has gone down since I first posted about it.

And if you'd rather have an Acoustic-electric, here's a link to the same sale for the a/e models. Not too many to choose from.

No idea why they created videos for Rock Packs, but then didn't release them in packs.

Just about to fire up the holiday one to see how that works.
