Salty I need to re-do my profile in CAG4.0
As the original deal morphed into a game deal and guitar advice thread, I decided to place the original BB deal behind spoiler tags for a reference point. And I listed the current deals below. The guitar purchase is the most difficult part for us beginners, so read the advice in the thread

Too busy to read the entire thread? Then try these following posts for the guitar advice. Thanks to SmileyMcSmiles for all the help :applause:

Guitar+Bass Version*****

Original Version*****

Original DEAL behind this Spoiler
Bestbuy has a separate, two week flier for music gear and they're advertising Rocksmith game bundle+ Epiphone guitar for $199.98 and you get a $50 giftcard with purchase of the game/guitar bundle.

Ad is a bit odd in that they only list sku's for the game bundle and standalone guitar (#2633103, 2633149, 2273055), so they may be doing in-store bundling. Plus they list the game + guitar bundle as a 10 savings over buying everything separate

I'll let the musician CAGs speak to the quality of the guitar;)

UPDATE: Bestbuy finally got the site updated with the offer.
Link Dead
Like I said before, seems like they are doing an in-store bundle instead of selling the official Rocksmith guitar kit. Won't know for sure until it's bought

UPDATE #2: deal is definitely an in-store bundle of standalone guitar + game bundle. Guitar is an Epiphone LP jr with a cherryburst finish and no strap or picks are included. Asked about substituting a different guitar model but bundle price won't activate if you switch it out

My local best buy is clearancing out the

Fender® - SKB Molded Case For Stratocaster® and Telecaster® Guitars - Black
Model: 0996101506SKU: 8883176

for $78.99, down from $149.99. Picked one up tonight. It wasn't marked in-store, but it scanned as the lower price. Be sure to use the previous link for your best buy clearances first.

There was supposedly a Mustang at the store I went to where I got the deluxe Strat, inquired about it and the guy said the bridge was damaged so I didn't bother. The Jaguar was there that day too hiding in the lesson room and I passed on it. The Mustang apparently sold a couple days later to someone else who didn't care about the damage, and the Jaguar sold later on too, then was returned two days ago because they couldn't afford it or something (I'm sure it would've fetched a profit on eBay without question though...). Just got a new job offer with considerably better pay so I figured what the hell, I'll snatch the Jag too, even though the small frets isn't really my thing. Don't really regret passing on the Mustang too much but even as a guy I like the "cute" colors like Daphne and Sonic Blue. Percentage off street price it's a better deal than the Jaguar too, though maybe not after having to replace whatever was wrong with it.

In other news the 20% discount did work on some clearance accessories today (amps don't count period as far as I can tell, damn shame lol); a Fender T-shirt and a Beatles licensed strap, so I'm guessing it's an issue that the picks I got (the D'Andrea tins that got clearanced a long time ago) either weren't labelled as a music accessory or that it's not tagged in their inventory system anymore because they aren't listed online anywhere. Also the individual store clearance listings for Musical Instruments has expanded since the last time I checked; most of them are irrelevant items like clothes and drum pedals but they did add some cases (SKB Tele/Strat for $78ish, SKB P/J Bass for $95) and amps (acoustic-electric guitar amps too) to the list, and what I believe to be accurate stock of those Fender Pawn Shop models (the surf green and black ones). The bag included with the Jag is kinda mediocre, better than the dust cover one from Monoprice but nowhere near as thick, not much in the way of pockets for accessories, and didn't even include the backpack style straps (there's metal rings to attach them though...) as the $15 on sale Musician's Gear/Friend bags. Missed out on the Cube 30X amp for $87 too because someone bought out all of them at once.

Dunno, mighta been. Helped a buddy move a monster projection tv from his parents place, and he did all the driving

That's lucky with the jag. Snag that sucker before it disappears again. And I'd go for the sea foam pawn shop but only if it dropped more. Probably better it doesn't drop; I need a breather

Not my picture, but damn purple looks GOOD

And yeah the Jag is sitting in my room right now. Tempted to go check out the other store in my area with the SKB Tele/Strat case on the off chance the Jag will fit in it, it'd be a bit under 70 after tax if the 20% accessory discount works on it.
Anyone have recommendations for hard rock / metal? The Schecter C-1 Hellraiser maybe?
Just about any Schecter would do fine... Or Carvin, or Jackson, or BC Rich... Lots to choose from. If you want to be a real heavy metal rocker, make sure the axe has XJ frets...

Couldn't hack the plastic guit version.

Can't wait to see what I do to this:lol:. Oh the humanity!

Straight from Monoprice:

Fretboard radius? Approximately 14”

Fret wire size? 2.4 mm

Pickup routing configuration in the body? 5-position switch fir 1st position; 1st & 2nd position; 2nd position; 2nd & 3rd position; 3rd position

Nut width and material? 42 mm. Regarding material, we’re still confirming the type of plastic with the supplier, so it could be corian, micarta, etc, but it’s not bone or ivory or any organic materials.

String spacing at the bridge? The distance from the 1st string to the 6th is 51.5 mm, so the distance between strings is about a hair over 10 mm.

Neck thickness at nut, 12th fret? 41.5 mm @ nut; 53mm @ 12th fret

Not exactly what I was looking for in terms of the routing but since I already bought it I can just pull off the pickguard myself later when the strings wear out. I'm such a cheapass that I don't want to cut new ones early lol. That neck thickness can't be right either, maybe they were thinking fretboard width. Between this cheapie and the Legacy I got, the Legacy is definitely the more MIM Fender/higher end Squier correct in terms of physical measurements, in case someone was trying to decide between them. Not that the Monoprice one is bad.

So you guys that have been doing this awhile do you eventually memorize the songs to where you can play them outside of the game?

I just started the game and am only at level 2, but feel like I've already learned way more than I ever did on my own trying to teach myself.

Its really cool how the progression has built up from one string to two and so on so you feel like you can actually do the stuff its asking in the song without being overwhelmed. I've already gone from one finger and one string to using 3 or 4 fingers including my pinky to fret notes. And the best part is the progression feels so natural that you do it without really thinking about it.

One thing I wonder is should I be playing all the notes with a down stroke or down then up or does it matter?

So far I'm really happy with the Schecter Ultracure I picked up on mega sale from Amazon. Its huge though. I think I might have to find a bass case for it. If anyone knows of a decent large case let me know. This guitar has a fat azz.
Thanks ... that's kinda what I was figuring.
Hopefully they take it ok.

With the PC version being released, I thought for sure someone would have already been down the road of buying a boxed console version just to gut for the cable.

I'm having the same problem finding a case for the Fender Jaguar, the lower bout is around an inch too wide for just about every "universal" guitar case I've tried. And I'm not paying over $100 for an "official" SKB one.
So you guys that have been doing this awhile do you eventually memorize the songs to where you can play them outside of the game?

I just started the game and am only at level 2, but feel like I've already learned way more than I ever did on my own trying to teach myself.

Yes. In fact, I've already inquired with a couple of local bands about rhythm guitarist spots...

You can play any way you want. Sometimes, when you get used to listening, you'll hear where the band guitarist is using one or the other. Most of the time, it's dictated by speed or comfort whether you downstroke only or do both...

You pretty much memorize songs when you want to. It's possible to choose a song and level it up in Riff Repeater immediately so you get the full note version and just learn it.

In my case I chose to play thru the events as they were thrown at me because it always seemed like there was a purpose to those particular sets. It's only been recently that I bothered to properly memorize songs. Kept saying I'd do it but kept putting it off.

Right now, I have 4 songs that I can knock out at will
Angela
Boys Don't Cry
I can't hear you
Next Girl
Two others that I do well, but not well enough (timings off or just forget notes)
Step out of the car
Take me out
And about 10 others that I tank at the 99k mark just to avoid master mode on'em. I'll get to'em once I tighten things up on these.

And personal choice on alt. picking vs downstrokes. You'll become a much better player learning to alt. pick. I practice it but still revert to downstrokes most of the time:lol:

And congrats on the Schecter. I've been happy with mine. The Stargazer plays like butter. Hardly any effort at all.
Took a look at the shipping box and saw that it was shipped out from the manufacturer in August, so at least it wasn't sitting around too long in the M123 warehouse

The "coffin" universal case I got for my PRS works - which makes sense since the PRSs are wide like that, too... I ended up using straps, picks and pedals to price match enough at MF over the holiday to get the SKB jag case with GCs... Ended up costing me $90 for a pedal, 3 of the italian suede straps, 100 picks and the $139 SKB case :) Damn thing is still backordered, though, so it'll be another month or so before I get it.

As far as playing songs in master mode/outside of the game, I can do:

(I Hate) Everything About You
Breed
In Bloom
High and Dry
Bring Me To Life

I have to really love a song to all the way, no shit memorize it... Like, to where I could step on stage and play it without hesitation. So it makes sense that the above is a short list... They aren't the easiest songs in the game, but they're the ones that have always been my favorites.

I've master mode played other songs and done OK, but I wouldn't step on stage and try to do it without tightening things up and playing through them about 50 more times :)

Yup, the problem of going with anything that's not a LP, strat or tele. Still don't have a case for the Firebird. For now keep it in it's gigbag (nicest I've seen) and hang it on the wall. Still love it:D

Bunch of other songs I definitely wanna learn by heart. But currently focused on the ones that already triggered MM status. Been burned a few too many times by MM encores and still want the last few secret songs unlocked
Breed and In Bloom are just a couple of the songs I have sitting on the edge of MM status, along with Where's my mind, Use somebody...

It's funny how I can't get 100% on Angela but usually do on Next Girl. The long pause as well as the tempo near the end always seem to throw me off. But hey still consider it good since I only learn a song thru playing it. Rarely jump into riff repeater

You should predominantly be using alternate picking (down up, down up) for proper technique. Consecutive down strokes are normally reserved for palm mutes or sections in metal music where you want a good "chunk" sound.

Economy picking is used when arpeggiating chords or something called "sweep picking". If you want to work up to harder solos, I really can't stress proper technique enough, to which I'd recommend alternate picking.

Just about any time you are using consecutive upstrokes would be when playing chords and you want the higher registers to play earlier in the chord for accentuation purposes.

Does anyone know if there is a way to put the fret number above the note like in scale runner. I know there is that fretboard at the bottom of the screen just the interface never became intuitive to me. I can play fine its just figuring out what I am suposed to be playing never clicked with me. So by the time I register what the game is trying to tell me I am way out of tempo to play it.

Never mind. Played some on the playstation tv I got over Christmas makes this MUCH better. Before with my old crt tv the numbers on the highway were all blurry and I could barley read them. Now everything is nice and clear. Wish I got two of these from best buy so I wouldn't have too keep moving it when I play standing up. Well I did get two one was for a friends and wasn't sure if he would like it so didn't need 3 of them.

Sunshine of your love
Surfer hell

Lots of othe ones are fun like nirvana the holidays songs just don't like the repeating note songs like song two and go with the flow. Just keep my finders jumping around and ill have fun.
Could be off, but think those prices are a bit high. Well, maybe the blizzard pearl is justified at that price

Here are a bunch of MIM Fender strats that you could get from 250-350. And a return policy in case it turns out to be bad

If I'm wrong, Speak-Up! Help a CAG out
Thanks for the link. I think I'll most likely get a ~$250 MiM Strat online then. That, or the used Epi LP Studio Silverburst my local Guitar Center has.

EDIT: I'm thinking this one if it's still available when I get my money deposited in my bank account. Otherwise, I might go for this one or this one. Thoughts anyone?

How local are we talking because if they're all the same price you might as well visit the store and try them all out. Store to store shipping for used items is not free. That being said, you snooze you lose if you live in the city. Lost out on a used gold top Ibanez sz for 200 that looked pristine because I didn't buy it the day I saw it.

Ah, dang. I didn't realize shipping wasn't free for used items. No store local to me has any Strats I would want.

In regards to that first link (the agave blue strat), I have one of those and it's a beautiful color. Mine is MIM as well. When I first got it it was my favorite guitar for a while. It may not be the best deal out there but it's still a good guitar for the price when you compare what else is availible in that price range

I would say if you find a great deal get it while you can. I missed out on a few while I tried to decide if it was what I wanted. Guitarcenter used online section can be annoying though. Bad pics and little to no description. Some times they don't even show the model just the brand. Just them trying to get you on the phone.

Here is a pic of my newest guitar. Followed shortly by another most likely a se custom 24.

Here is a fun little gadget. A callus builder. I never thought I would see one. Almost want to get one. My work has me using gloves and being soaked in oil all day. Builds good hand strength heaving around iron castings all day. But it softens my hands making it hard to build up calluses. Not a pain thing but when I fret I end up deadening strings becase my finger tips are too soft.

Noticed that MusiciansFriend brought back the 150% price match offer from the holidays. So keep an eye out for good pm opportunities:)

And AMS' weekly deal is for the Korg Pitchblack+ pedal tuner at $49.95
http://www.americanmusical.com/RSS_Feeds/weeklydeals.aspx
Nice thing about it is you can store different tunings. Pretty cool if you're switching between standard & drop d tuning. Or even if you move back and forth between guitar & bass

Thanks to the CAG who refreshed the BB clearance talk.

Grabbed the fender/skb case and it works perfectly for my PT:bouncy:. Store I got it at only had 1 and it was still inside the cardboard box.
Easily the best case I've got

But ONLY go for it if you have tele or strat that's a fender or just like it. Interiors molded to that shape. And the headstock area can only handle a straight headstock. NOTHING angled

Think I saw this same one on Hellomusic for $475. Not as good as the BF prices but still better than regular pricing.

So it's up to $200 now... Hmmm... I have a plan. Have to wait until tomorrow when my Paypal money hits the account... Stay tuned ;)

This should be good coming from you lol
And technically bad for me since I still have money ready to burn
In fact I just bought a used Squier VM Strat with a flamed maple neck(!) and a dinged up body, GAS attack

That's how it worked last tim. Each item was limited to $100 but if you order multiple things the gift certificate will be over $100. Kind of a silly restriction because you can just place multiple orders.

Ahhh yeah. I see what you mean now. I am doubtful that what I'm going to try tomorrow will work, but you never know until you try. I've been turned down before on stuff like this and I've had some go through that I had no hope for. Roll the dice. What's the worst that can happen? Don't answer that.

I know they had 2 kinds. Worker had to track down the clearance model to get the right price

Even though they were identical (same brand, look, size) only one was on clearance.
Always find it funny when clearance hits one item and not the other, ONLY because the sku got changed

And it's here:
New DLC Day!!!
*Alive - Pearl Jam
*Cliffs of Dover - Eric Johnson
*No Rain - Blind Melon
They also released a Pearl Jam song pack (had to wait for that 3rd song;))

OK... So I tried to get Music123 to price match this today and the guy (Matthew) out and out lied and said he had called the store and it was a floor model. I knew he was lying about calling the store (any of you that have tried to actually get a BB from the toll free number know what I'm talking about), but I figured the guitar was, indeed on the wall, so I didn't press the issue... But when I called the actual store (thank you, deep Google search), the guy was cool, but I didn't have the SKU. I drove BACK to the office and logged in to get the SKU and called him back. He said he didn't see that guitar but he'd look around and call me back. Being Best Buy, I thought - Yeah right... But he did call back - and told me he had found this guitar on a shelf in the warehouse.... I think he was as surprised as I was to find it actually in stock... I couldn't pass it up. 75 miles later, it was mine...

It's a Fender Classic Series '60s Stratocaster in Candy Apple Red... Brand new, in the box... $325.99. Sells for $799.99 at MF and GC... I LOVE it. Mint green pickguard, aged knobs, Fender vintage pickups. It's the top of the line as far as Mexican Fenders go.

I can't wait to play this baby.

There's three of those I'm aware of within reasonable driving distance, one already sold, that one was on the wall. I don't think I want any of the others, nor have I personally been to those stores to see whether they're wall models or boxed up. Only have so much space...congrats though, the most important thing is if you want it and you end up getting it :)

I think there are still a couple of decent finds around me, but I am truly just about spent out for now. Happy for this one, though. It's just different enough from my other Strat that I'll have fun with it.

I think I am going to check the fit on the PRS in the Fender box and drop that on eBay. I don't really need the metal guitars and that one is likely to get me the best ROI.

Awesome. Stuff. I might pick up Rocksmith today and slowly start researching this thread for guitar reviews and pick one up. Prolly just mine and see Smiley's stuff. I couldn't see myself spending more than 200$, prolly 100$ is my spot.

In totally unrelated news. Could someone recommend a space that would give a similar recommendation except for a semi-portable keyboard best bang for buck? Like how Smiley recommended?

Man are you lucking out with all those fenders. What did you think of the neck on your prs se? I wasn't able to get any deals on fenders. So I am probally going to get an SE Custom 24. Not sure if I am going to like the wide thin neck though.
