Salty I need to re-do my profile in CAG4.0
As the original deal morphed into a game deal and guitar advice thread, I decided to place the original BB deal behind spoiler tags for a reference point. And I listed the current deals below. The guitar purchase is the most difficult part for us beginners, so read the advice in the thread

Too busy to read the entire thread? Then try these following posts for the guitar advice. Thanks to SmileyMcSmiles for all the help :applause:

Guitar+Bass Version*****

Original Version*****

Original DEAL behind this Spoiler
Bestbuy has a separate, two week flier for music gear and they're advertising Rocksmith game bundle+ Epiphone guitar for $199.98 and you get a $50 giftcard with purchase of the game/guitar bundle.

Ad is a bit odd in that they only list sku's for the game bundle and standalone guitar (#2633103, 2633149, 2273055), so they may be doing in-store bundling. Plus they list the game + guitar bundle as a 10 savings over buying everything separate

I'll let the musician CAGs speak to the quality of the guitar;)

UPDATE: Bestbuy finally got the site updated with the offer.
Link Dead
Like I said before, seems like they are doing an in-store bundle instead of selling the official Rocksmith guitar kit. Won't know for sure until it's bought

UPDATE #2: deal is definitely an in-store bundle of standalone guitar + game bundle. Guitar is an Epiphone LP jr with a cherryburst finish and no strap or picks are included. Asked about substituting a different guitar model but bundle price won't activate if you switch it out

http://issuu.com/samashmusic/docs/blackfriday2015_handout_links

-Those Melody Makers  @$348 are what caught my eye.  The doublecut @$700 isn't too far behind.

Sam Ash also has the Scarlett 2i2 recording interface for $99. This thing is pretty much the standard for recording into a computer. It is a solid $149 all the time. First time I've ever seen a sale on it. Probably picking it up today...

Sigh... think I went 2 years without buying gear.  That melody maker though...

EDIT: got one in TV Yellow :bouncy: .  I'll post pics once I get the chance.

Cyber Monday deals are pretty much the same as the BF deals.  At least, I'm not noticing anything different (big surprise)

BestBuy still has Rocksmith 2014 for $35 ($28 if you have GCU) :xb1:  :ps4:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/searchpage.jsp?st=rocksmith&_dyncharset=UTF-8&id=pcat17071&type=page&sc=Global&cp=1&nrp=&sp=&qp=&list=n&iht=y&usc=All+Categories&ks=960&keys=keys

This should be the game+cable bundle, based on the box art alone.

EDIT: might have missed these last time, but they're on sale at GuitarCenter right now.  Haven't seen either of these at this price in a while.

Epi Les Paul Jr. in alpine white @$99

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Epiphone/Les-Paul-Junior-Electric-Guitar-White.gc

Epi Les Paul Jr. in trans blue @$99

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Epiphone/Limited-Edition-LP-Junior.gc

EDIT #2: Music & Arts has a 20% off coupon (good on anything 99 or over)  - CMTWNTY.

The real kicker... they had the Union Jack Sheraton on clearance and when I applied the coupon, it knocked it down to the mid $400's :hot: .  Too bad it's out of stock.  But maybe you'll get lucky and find something else to use it on.

EDIT #2.5: just tried out the Line 6 variax guitar and the code works.  So, pretty good coupon to try.

I snagged a Scarlett 2i2 today at GC on a PM to MF. ;)

Also, we get a 3 pack of Skillet tomorrow. While a lot of the web tabs are in drop C, the official tabs seem to be Drop D. I'll probably pick up the pack if it's all Drop D.

So, I just picked up a copy of PS3 Rocksmith with cord at Target on clearance for $8.98 thinking it might be a good bridge to get back into playing guitar. I was beginning to learn bass guitar many a year ago and never really went anywhere else with it. Now my 4-String Ibanez guitar just sits in the basement collecting dust.

The version I got has box art that looks like this:

http://edgecast.lvlup-files.buscafs.com/uploads/news/photos/news_photo_23671_1351280663.jpg

Can anyone who is experienced with it tell me if this version supports bass guitar or not? Or is it too old? It doesn't explicitly say if it supports it or not on the box.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, and I apologize if this is the wrong place to post this.

That looks like the original release, so no bass (the bass version looks almost identical but has a little bubble saying "guitar & bass").

You'd have to buy the bass expansion. I DON"T recommend you buy the expansion.  Better off putting that money towards the RS2014 version since that would include bass tracks.

Ok. Thanks for the advice.

Lets say I want to still give this version a shot (unless it's garbage compared to the 2014 version...) are those guitars for $99 at Guitar Center worth it as a starter? The ones you provided links on in an earlier post... I'm not opposed to starting over and learning a 6-string guitar. The "junior" listed in the name has be a bit concerned as I am 6'2" 300lbs... I don't want to get a tiny guitar and feel awkward playing it.

Thanks again.

Those juniors are fine. They're full scale - not minis.

The old RS has its charms, but 2014 is where it's at. Good thing is that if you continue to play, when you get 2014 you have an extra cable and can buy the transfer pack to move most of the RS 1 songs to 2014 for $10...

Obligatory crappy pics incoming:

Like Crazed said, these LP Jr's are full scale guitars and are fine for Rocksmith. The junior refers to the fact that this has less features than a regular Les Paul. Pretty much a marketing ploy to sell more guitars back in the 50's, but the Junior line developed it's own following and kick ass in their own way.

If this feels small to you, then you're gonna find that a whole mess of guitars are gonna feel small. Best I can tell ya is... go out to guitar center or some other music store and start holding different models until you find one you're comfortable with.

In my case, I have 2 of these: A cherry sunburst that I got with Rocksmith (the og BestBuy deal that started this entire thread) and a trans blue that I got as a gift. These are the two I tend to play the most and I think it's because they are solid guitars and I don't worry too much if they get knocked around so they're always at the ready. Where as my other guitars are in cases and while it sounds silly, it can be a drag to pull one out and get it ready to play

That's a beauty, Frosty! Now if we could only see some of the other gems in your collection... ;)

I love those thread because of helpful NG people get into guitars and all the camaraderie we've built over the years. I hate that it always reminds me of the Best Buy sale and I know I'll never see anything like that again... :)

FYI, the cyber Monday coupon code for Music & Arts is still working(CMTWNTY), even though it's not listed on the site anymore.  When I tested it, it worked on everything except for Fender products (sorry Crazed).

And since Crazed mentioned it, here are some of the guitars I've admitted to owning  .In the following order:

-blue sparkle Squier strat HH (turns out this was my last purchase prior the Melody Maker,4th of July 2k14)

-Couch straps (photo was still in my library, yellow one is on my new purchase)

-Epiphone Swingster (when it was minty fresh outta the box)

-Hofner 185 solidbody bass

-Hofner Galaxie 6 string

-Schecter Damian (amazon special model)

-Schecter PT

-Schecter Stargazer

-Epiphone Les Paul Jr in trans blue

Some day I'll bother to take good photos... some day.

3 pack of Tenacious D this week...

On 12/22, there will be a 6 pack of Stone Temple Pilots. Dan let us know yesterday. He didn't want it construed as a rush to make money off of Scott Weiland's passing. The DLC had been in the chute, so to speak, for months. It just happened that Scott passed away this week and the DLC was already scheduled for 12/22.

Guitar Center is now holding a Black Friday 2, "electric boogaloo" sale ;) .

They added another flavor to the Epi Les Paul Jr sale. Now you can choose from Cherry, White and Trans Blue for the same $99.99 price.

Cherry

White

Trans Blue

Hey Frosty - where did you get your Couch straps? Did you get a deal on them? I love them. I think I may need one (or two... or six).
I got them straight from their site.

https://www.couchguitarstraps.com/

Once a year they have a sale (IIRC, it was a 25%off coupon code). Been sooo busy that I completely forgot about the sale this year or else I would have bought a couple more.

Now I gotta wait 'til it rolls around again... personally like the Racer X and Western straps the most.

Side Note:

Posting those pics the other day made me bust out a couple of those guitars. They had been out of rotation, just because...

Missed them, ya know.

Are there any really cheap guitars anyone would recommend?  I've been thinking about buying a cheap guitar to try out and see if I like it, with Rocksmith 2014, though I wouldn't want to invest too much in case learning/playing guitar doesn't really click with me.

If I go with something like this one on Amazon, will that work for learning purposes, or would I be screwing myself over? http://www.amazon.com/Electric-Accessories-Beginner-Starter-Package/dp/B002RXXOX8/

That's really NOT a good option. Gonna be as bad as the majority of those First Act guitars... and those are terrible.

It may be old advice but still good advice is the Dean Vendetta xmt

http://www.amazon.com/Dean-Vendetta-Electric-Rosewood-Fingerboard/dp/B0025VLQVE/ref=sr_1_2?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1451361502&sr=1-2&keywords=dean+vendetta

Dean Evo is another choice, if you'd rather have a different body type

http://www.amazon.com/Dean-Solid-Body-Electric-Guitar/dp/B0002E1OVS/ref=sr_1_11?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1451361502&sr=1-11&keywords=dean+vendetta

The nice thing about these two is that they're not too pricey (usually 100) and they're really solid models. If you stick with it you'll find that these will serve you for a good long while. You might find used ones for $50, considering how many people picked up that model back when RS first released. Might be worth it to check pawn shops or the used sections of music stores.

Thanks man, I appreciate the advice. The Dean Vendetta XMT looks good (not that I have any clue about anything concerning guitars at all). I'm going to do some more research and strongly consider picking that one up.

Congrats  .

Don't expect you'll need to do much tweaking to get the guitar playing, other than tuning it up.

But if you run into issues, just post and one of us should be able to help out.
Will do. :)

Man, I can't wait until it arrives Monday. I just wish I would've checked Amazon more thoroughly first, because Amazon has the same exact combo Prime-eligible and over $20 cheaper. There you go, future newbies looking for a deal.

I'm almost a week late, but I wanted to share with you guys. I had a very merry Christmas. My parents gave me a 1987 USA Fender Telecaster. It came from my dad's collection.

I hope some of you got a shiny piece of wood under your tree too ;)

fuck you. No, seriously... fuck you. :) No, seriously... That is absolutely beautiful, jsivley. I bet it plays like butter. Enjoy that. Or sell it to me. ;)

hey, i'm having trouble with this game on PS4. when i first start the game it takes me to a calibration screen where i'm supposed to "make alot of noise" but my guitar strums will not register? i know the cable and guitar works because i have the game on PS3 and it works fine. i've tried it with the PS4 hooked up to my 5.1 surround via HDMI and to the PS4 to TV alone via HDMI and both do not work. any suggestions? i'm stumped.

thanks

Rocksmith 2014 PC Steam version is about $3.24 in Russian price over at GamersGate. If you know someone in Russia, you can ask them to buy the game for you, or find a way to get it on your own with a reddit guide...

Hum, I have to unplug the cable from my PS4 and replug it back in whenever I boot the game despite it being plugged in from the getgo. I'm sure you gave that a shot already, right?

yeah, i've tried that too. i have no clue what the deal is. the cable and guitar work perfect on the ps3 version.

Not sure if this is your issue. When I put my system into rest mode. It screws up the cables connection. So I have to close Rocksmith and start it back up again. Works fine after that.

Lol, I somehow had a feeling that if anybody responded to my post that it would be you. Have you ever considered changing your username from crazedRACERguy to crazedFENDERguy? It really is a beautiful guitar and both plays and sounds great. So get this, my mom calls me Christmas Eve to chat and asks me "just out of curiosity" what sounds better a USA telecaster or a brand new 52" tool box. I responded telecaster and it was waiting for me the next day. Way to be subtle, Mom

I don't even have a family picture - I don't own enough guitar stands for m Fenders. :) I strung my Jaguar with 11's last night so I could leave it in D Standard for Motley Crue... Gonna play some tonight. Goddamn Fallout 4...

Couple of simple deals, sorta

Guitar Center has a 10-pack of 30' instrument cables for $46

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Daily-Pick.gc

Either set yourself up for a looong time on cables or split the cost with a buddy (or 2,3,4)

And they also have the Squier Bullet HSS model for $100; btw... sea foam green is the only correct choice ;)

LoL, love it. Congrats

Rocksmith is amazing.  I started playing this week, and I'm hooked.  A little painful doing slides and such, but I'm starting to build up those callouses. :)

To my fellow guitar noobs (if any of you are), I found tonight that you can record your guitar with the Rocksmith cable and some free software.  Just download Reaper (shareware, but not limited beyond a nag screen- think WinRAR) and some VSTs, which are basically plugins that you can load into Reaper to change the sound, like having a virtual amp and other hardware.  Really awesome, easy-to-use stuff.

I actually bought RS 2014 for my Christmas present holiday of 2014, and I've yet to set it up and use it. I've actually been looking at it in my office and saying to myself, "WOW, I've had this a whole year, and have yet to even open the box"(damn you CAG). I'm hoping once I start, it kickstarts my long want and need to finally learn to play.

I've had my "SG" Epiphone for about 17 years since I bought it from a manager friend of mine at EB, and it's been a cool decoration ever since. Damn, it's time I learn to play this thing ASAP. LOL

Glad to here a noob like myself is enjoying it, I'll be joining you soon.

You're in for a trip. :)

What do you guys think for a beginner, the squier or the les paul? Going to drop some money on one this weekend, i really prefer the look of that squier in the seafoam green, but if theres a big gap in quality I'd just assume get the LP for the same price. Complete newbie when it comes to this stuff but I'm looking forward to diving into rocksmith once i get a half decent guitar.

Either is fine. Buy what you like. When you play for a while an decide whether you're going to keep playing or not, you can buy something a little higher quality.

Quick hit that I just saw in a google ad:

Epiphone Les Paul Special II, in wine red, for $99.00

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Epiphone/Les-Paul-Special-II-Electric-Guitar-J07391.gc

Think these normally go for about 160
i got Rocksmith last week in the best buy sale is this probably the best guitar and price that been on sale recently for a beginner starting out?

also if i understood it right if i get this and it doesnt feel right it look like i should be able to return it to the store per there return policy correct?

Either of these should be good as a first guitar. So first and foremost choose the model you like more; love at first sight if you will. You'll be more motivated to keep playing if it's something you like.

Now keep in mind that at this price range, you will find quality control issues,. You could get a good one on your first shot and you may need to dig thru a few to find the good one. But if I were to guess, you might need to go thru a couple Squiers to find the good one. Same might happen with the Epi, but it's been my experience that the "limited edition custom shop" models get a little more TLC before they're shipped (talking about the logo on the back of the headstock).

Whichever you choose, look the whole thing over. Some things to watch: screws are present and screwed in straight, no cracks, no chips, neck looks straight, knobs turn freely, parts aren't loose, etc. Also try holding the guitar like you would while playing and run your hand up and down the length of the neck, paying attention to the fret ends. They should NOT feel sharp.

In the end buy what you like and look it over for any issues. And post here if you come across problems

Oh and you guys are gonna owe me guitar pics for my reply, it's the rule ;)
