Salty I need to re-do my profile in CAG4.0
As the original deal morphed into a game deal and guitar advice thread, I decided to place the original BB deal behind spoiler tags for a reference point. And I listed the current deals below. The guitar purchase is the most difficult part for us beginners, so read the advice in the thread

Too busy to read the entire thread? Then try these following posts for the guitar advice. Thanks to SmileyMcSmiles for all the help :applause:

Guitar+Bass Version*****

Original Version*****

Original DEAL behind this Spoiler
Bestbuy has a separate, two week flier for music gear and they're advertising Rocksmith game bundle+ Epiphone guitar for $199.98 and you get a $50 giftcard with purchase of the game/guitar bundle.

Ad is a bit odd in that they only list sku's for the game bundle and standalone guitar (#2633103, 2633149, 2273055), so they may be doing in-store bundling. Plus they list the game + guitar bundle as a 10 savings over buying everything separate

I'll let the musician CAGs speak to the quality of the guitar;)

UPDATE: Bestbuy finally got the site updated with the offer.
Link Dead
Like I said before, seems like they are doing an in-store bundle instead of selling the official Rocksmith guitar kit. Won't know for sure until it's bought

UPDATE #2: deal is definitely an in-store bundle of standalone guitar + game bundle. Guitar is an Epiphone LP jr with a cherryburst finish and no strap or picks are included. Asked about substituting a different guitar model but bundle price won't activate if you switch it out

I tried that a few years back. Bought a friends low end extra righty guitar cheap and tried for about 4 months - failed miserably :D.

Kept telling myself one day I would just break down and buy a lefty. Finally did and in the past 3 weeks I've made more progress than I did in the entire 4 months with the righty!
When I was in Junior High School and my Grandpa purchased me my first guitar and I started lessons, I naturally held the guitar in a left handed position (I am ambidextrous). My grandpa said "Left handed guitars are hard to find and expensive, so you are better off just forcing yourself to learn to play right handed." I did just as he said and now almost 10 years later it is so foreign feeling to even hold a guitar left handed!

Anyone else noticing more Music Ads on CAG nowadays? Think this thread has something to do with it?

Couple of sales out there:

Guitar Center has $20 coupon on purchases over 99. Good for the Dean Vendetta Xmt
Amazon still has RS @ $60 and they also have a 15% off select musical instruments/accessories. The 15% discount applied at the end of checkout AND only on items sold by Amazon

Anyway, got that hardshell case I had posted about, back before Christmas.

Overall, pretty happy with it, but a little disappointed it didn't quite work with the Damien.

Originally ordered it for the Vendetta and it fits fine for my needs. Leaves about a finger's width of space from the side of the guitar to the inside wall. If you let the bottom of the guitar rest on the bottom wall of the case then the neck rests on the neck pocket at the 10th fret. Push the guitar up as high as possible and the neck will rest on the 12th fret. Roughly 2 inches of wiggle space. Could always buy some padding for a tighter fit.

Next tried the Damien. Body fit in nice but the neck wasn't supported at all. The tip of the headstock kept the neck from resting in the pocket. Kinda worried it might screw up the neck. So, gonna look at a different case. May call Musicians Friend and see if they can recommend a different case.

Finally tried the Les Paul Jr. The body fit nice and snug. Neck rested exactly at the 12th fret. And the headstock just barely avoids touching, but it's close. Like paper-thin close.
I also bought that case and the damien is definitely a snug fit width wise... it does have a bit of room length wise. I'm not sure what you mean about the neck not being supported though? I could be wrong but i think mine rests on the pocket i think? I'm gonna double check mine when i go home..
I actually did a flip on the RB3 Squier. I ended up making $65(plus RZ points and cash back on my cc) after buying it and shipping it. The chick loved it and even mentioned she used Rocksmith with it. She paid more than the current price of the Damien.
Wow, your email got me checking on the RB3 Squier and I just realized that they stopped production on it back in June/July. Since then, prices have definitely gone up quite a bit on eBay since there is still some demand for it (beyond the fact that it can be used with RB3, it's also a decent price for a MIDI guitar). However, it took me 3 tries to finally get one that wasn't screwed up in one way or another. The first one had some bad fret sensors and another weighed over 4 pounds more than the first, but the third one was "just right". Given the quality problems they had (and the overall music game market as well as Rocksmith in the near future) I can understand why Fender killed the RB3 Squier.

I'm tempted to sell mine and use the money to buy something better, but I think I'll keep it around for a while for use with RB3 AND Rocksmith...especially since I missed out on the Damien deal (I saw it in time but didn't order it because I was on vacation and didn't want to have it sitting at my front door for several days. By the time I was ready to head home, it had gone up in price).

Yeah, check and see if you have any space between the neck and the pocket. In my case, I can stick the tip of my finger between the neck and the pocket.

Once I saw the issues, I tried to figure out the differences between the Vendetta and the Damien. Near as I can tell, the Vendetta's body is slightly thinner. And the Damien's headstock is just a little longer
I decided on getting 2 of these for my guitars - simple but very functional (and cheaper than a case)

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000EEJGRK/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER
Thought of doing this, only with the LP jr. It part of the reason why I bought the Bursewood gig bag. The bag is so thin you can leave it on and still hang the guitar up or place it in a stand

Wow. Those prices on new ones at ebay are insane. You could buy a real strat for those prices. I guess RB3 fans gotta have their midi guitar. They should have just made the midi adaptor do all the work and not try to have a custom guitar for it.

I saw one in BBY and said to myself "I doubt any one will buy this so I'll list it on Amazon." Well finally someone did buy it, and I just went in and bought it. Opened it and added some padding for shipping, then off to FedEx it went.

I'm going to have to check my local Best Buy again tomorrow. I swear they had a few of these still in the store. If I could clear a decent amount quickly on them, it would be worth the purchase to resell them.

Ok i double checked this for you tonight, the body rests in its space, the neck sits firmly in the little slot (I tried slipping a finger under the neck but it sits totally flush against the case notch), and then the headstock tip rests against bottom of the case fine. I wonder why our guitars fit differently in the same case??

I wonder why our guitars fit differently in the same case??
Thanks Splattered.

Difference in our experience is probably due to the case. Doubt there's much of any QC on a $40 case. Now to decide if I order another in the hopes of getting a better fit for the Damien. Although, I'd hate having the headstock still touch the bottom.

Or maybe I should hang it like Pooky mentioned

Wait i'm confused... the headstock ISN'T supposed to touch the case at all? Because the very end/tip does touch the bottom of the case... but so does the neck and the body.

Well, if I end up getting another case might as well look at one that'll have more protection around the headstock. At least your case supports the guitar at the neck and body and sounds like the headstock tip only touches the bottom instead of resting on it.

I'd feel different if there was padding in the upper area like there is in the bottom area

Quick reminder that the Guitar Center $20 off sale ends today, 1/8/12. And Rocksmith is still $60 thru Amazon.
I installed strap locks on my Strat today when I took a break from playing. They are nice and sturdy. Just felt like I was tempting fate without them on.
Hey Crazed, keep forgetting to ask you about the straplocks. Still holding well? What type did you go with: the pushbutton type which lets you remove the strap or is the strap permanently attached until you unscrew the lock.

I put on and take off the strap for each use. And the top layer of leather is starting to rip after 2 months of use. So thinking of going with the pushbutton type of straplock.

I use the old standard Dunlop Strap-loks. It's a lot easier to use the push button ones, I think. They have all kinds of new types, but those old dunlop ones are really secure. I think they had them in Guitar Center last night for $20.

I picked up a gift set a GC of 3 sets of Fender electric strings and a Fender baseball for 7.4x on clearance. I really just wanted the baseball, but I was down to my last set of Fender strings, so that was cool. I'll admit that I'm a Fender fanboy. :)

Thanks. Gonna have to do something soon 'cause it's getting alot easier to put the strap on & off.

And I've almost bought that pack before too. Didn't care about the strings; just wanted the baseball:lol:

Guitar Center sale got extended by a day, so it now ends today 1-9-12.

Also keep an eye on Amazon's Lightning Deal @ 1:00pm 9:00pm. Might be Rocksmith related. The clue is "Learning Guitar is Made Fun". If it's a bust, they at least still have it priced at $60

Ooh. If its 40 or less, I'm all over it

I hope they keep up the DLC. If they continue the "every 2 weeks" pattern, 3 more songs should be added tomorrow (and continue every other Tuesday).

WTF? Amazon changed the deal time to 9:00pm. Guess we gotta wait 'til tonight to see if it is for Rocksmith

Musicians Friend started up a 2-day sale. $20 off orders of at least 99 or $40 of orders of at least 349.
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/pages/two-day-sale?icid=200050
Bunch of exclusions but should work on Dean guitars. Just note that they have the Vendetta priced at 140. Call them up and see if they'll match the Guitar Center price of 99

Also, it has been two months since the start of the thread. And some of you may have hit a wall in RS. Others may still be skeptical about Rocksmith. Either way watch the following RS battle.

Love that the "noob" did so well. Also got a kick outta the "experts" play style:lol:. Enjoy and keep Rockin! \m/

U Caaaannn Dooo Eeeeet!:applause:

Amazon continues to keep Rocksmith @ $60 for both versions.
Guitar Center has a new sale going; 10% off any one item.
http://www.guitarcenter.com/Promos/ClaimDiscountCoupon.aspx?pid=4516
And American Musical has a fixed mic stand on sale for $13, if you want to try your luck at playing and singing at the same time
http://www.americanmusical.com/RSS_Feeds/weeklydeals.aspx

Also wanted to get the starter/inexpensive guitar discussion going again because I think I came across a few new choices which seem to be pretty good (and also because the Dean Vendetta seems to be the only low cost option out there). If what I found is as good as it seems then it'll help everyone, especially the Lefty players, with more buying options

I've mentioned before that I'm spending more time reading/lurking on music forums trying to get more info on guitars. And across a few different forums, I kept seeing talk of Rondo Music guitars. Common consensus that kept coming up is that they sell inexpensive guitars at good, quality build levels. Guitar types are mostly copies/clones of Telecasters, Stratocasters and Les Pauls but they have other styles also.

Most feel that they're built better (fit and equipment) than the average Epiphone/Squier guitars. While I'm not looking for another guitar, gotta say that all the info I've found so far has made a positive impression. Once I have more time, I'll provide some links. Have to google to refind them.

But I do remember some model reviews which were the SX Furrian, SX Hawk, Douglas Shadow and the Agile AL2000 & AL3000.
http://www.rondomusic.com/ just click the electric guitar link on the home page.
Check out the selection and prices. Then google reviews for those models. And if any CAGs have experience with them, please speak up. And please keep in mind that this is to help other beginners with low cost and good quality alternatives. Let's try to keep it civil 'kay;)

On a personal note, I fuck'n hate levelling pattern in Ricochet. Intro verse is particularly is F'd up!:bomb: Spent 3 hours over the last 3 days going from 14k to 72k in order to qualify. Didn't help that i learned tonight that I had intonation problems where I thought I was using bad technique on some chords:roll:. Sorry ' bout the rant. Just had to vent

Intonation will kill you in this game. Fortunately, it's easy to fix. Anyone that's playing this game and is certain that they're hitting the right notes down low on the neck, but it's not registering in the game needs to check your intonation. Just google it. There are a bunch of videos. You just need a small screwdriver...

Yeah, really got frustrated today because the issues only came up once the game changed the single fret notes into the E7-->C9 progression. Think that was the sequence. And I thought it wasn't registering because I wasn't muting the string properly. Then I was accidently muting two strings. Wasn't until I cleaned up my form that I thought to check the intonation.

Took for granted that I hadn't had any issues in a long time. So I got lazy and just relied on the in-game tuner.
And it was a quick fix. But still pissed at the way the leveller worked in Ricochet. Never experienced that with any other song

So I have $125 in Amazon credit...would love to get a guitar from them but most of the left-handed guitars are out of my budget or not-so-great-reviews. Any suggestions? I'm a complete beginner so I honestly have no idea what is good and what isn't.

Hey Syn, I know it's not Amazon, but try looking thru Rondomusic's selection. As I mentioned up above, reviews seem pretty good for their models. Specific reviews I found were for the SX Furrian, SX Hawk and Douglas Shadow
Link to lefty selection: http://www.rondomusic.com/electricguitarleft.html
Link to SX Hawk: http://www.rondomusic.com/hawkrnlh3ts.html

I'll try to get some review links posted tomorrow, but you can google them yourself. That's how I found them. Seem to offer the best bang for the buck

Hopefully, some CAGs will also have first-hand experience with those guitars

I can't really afford to drop $100+ on a guitar outside of Amazing, hence wanting to use the credit (and maybe a bit extra out of pocket, not much though). I would actually love to get the Short Scale Sunburst Guitar Package Left Handed from that site, and I've seen the RH version on amazing for $99. But alas, no lefties on Amazon, at least none that look good (for under $100).

Just get a normal right handed guitar. You use your left hand more on a right handed guitar's fret board. I'll probably be better in the end. Unless you are truly hell bend on getting a left handed guitar, I don't see the point.

I've played Rock Band and GH for years using my gutiar in the left-handed position, I need a left-hand guitar.

Indeed, if there was some way to convert Amazon credit into store credit for one of these music stores, that would be great...

I was going to tell you to contact the owner of Rondo Music to see if he might add one of the other lefty models to his Amazon store, but that's moot now.

Congrats man. Just give it a good once over to see that things are fine. You know, see that the neck isn't twisted or cracked, try out the switches and knobs. Stuff like that.

Should turn out fine. Important thing is to get going. Afterall, Rocksmith is gonna do the heavy lifting on the tones. And if after a while you find you still want to keep going, you can upgrade down the road.

And here's a little tip I picked up from a re-stringing video. Try to stretch out the strings before you go to tune it. Just DON'T STRETCH them by using the tuners. It should help keep the guitar in tune longer. Otherwise you'll be retuning several times over that first week or two.

All you do is loosen the strings a bit. Grasp the first string with your fingers and use your thumb to apply pressure in the opposite direction. And just work you way up the length of the string. You're just using the strength in your fingers to stretch it out a bit. If you're trying to rip the string off, then you're doing it wrong;)

Stopped by Guitar Center to pick up the Dean Vendetta I ordered earlier in the week ... asked the dude to open it up in the store and if he could set it up or give it a one over. He gives me kind of a weird look and says something about normally only doing that if I bought their in-store stock (it was a web order) but goes ahead and opens it up.

He's telling me it sounds pretty good ... and then I notice this giant crack in the top of the fretboard ... fail. Guess I'll be getting a replacement by sometime next week. :(

Here's a tuning tip: always tune up to the note, never down. If you are sharp then adjust so it's a bit below the pitch, stretch the string a little, and tune up to the note being careful not to go higher. If you don't do this the strings will never stay in tune. If you do this and it still won't stay in tune (and you are sure it's not you) replace the tuners with quality ones. They aren't that expensive and will make a huge difference. Hope this helps someone.

Thank you. I appreciate you not going off on a rant about how it's likely an Asian copy or something. Reviews I've found online indicate that this is a copy, but that it's fairly solid and sounds good. So for a beginner guitar, I think that's fine. And as you said, should this not work out, I'm not out $100's.

Ok, Musicians Friend has two different deals going today.
First they have a Friday the 13th sale; save 13% on any one item of $130+
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/pages/friday?icid=200101
Second their Stupid Deal of the Day is the Rogue SC80r stereo chorus combo amp @ $100 (normally $200-250)
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/stupid/?icid=111130_001_hpsh3_pd
Couldn't find reviews on the sc80r. But it's little brother, the SC40r has tons of reviews and they're mostly very positive. Specs are nearly the same: 80w vs 40w, 10" speakers vs 8", cd/mp3 input, headphone jack.

Now to get back to those Rondo Music guitars. Got a few links together so people can look things over.

Sorry to hear that man. These two things are why I had my Dean shipped to the local GC. I wanted someone to give it a look-over for playability. And if it was damaged, I would have had them process the return right away

That's a good tip. Glad you pointed it out.

I already do it, but only because I stumbled on the problem when RS would have you drop tuning on the low E. Almost seems to me like the string gets slightly caught on the nut. I will loosen the string more than needed, then slightly lift the string at the nut (sorta pick it). Then just tune up. Otherwise it would go out of tune after the first strum

On another note, I hate this game... It keeps me from playing MW3 and listening to 12 year olds call me a f*g or n word... ;) I literally haven't played another game in months... RS is still $60 thru Amazon. Plus they have a Gold Box deal today on the Les Paul Jr @ 10:00am. It'll probably be the tv yellow model since that's the only one currently in stock and sold by Amazon. EDIT: deal was for the TV yellow model @ $95

Hey, no problem man. There's been alot of good advice from more experienced CAGs. Plus, I do a bunch of research on my own. Besides, what DOESN'T get made in China nowadays:lol:

Yeah, RS pretty much absorbed most of my gaming time. My backlog hasn't budged one bit since I got this. If I do play something else it's usually on the 3ds or ipad

Because rbarb4 keeps it updated with any existing or future deals for Rocksmith and it gets updated with other guitar deals (which you need to play Rocksmith).

No offense, but this is complete shit advice. Most people's brains just can't process things both ways. And even people who have no clue how to play guitar have a way that feels natural for how they would hold one. If it doesn't feel right to you, you're going to have a really hard time and you're not going to stick with it. It's too bad Jimi Hendrix wasn't smart enough to figure out that "you use your left hand more". All he did was restring his righty guitar and flip it upside down...which is better advice than you're giving.

Thanks. I didn't want to reply to his original post rudely, but as I mentioned, I've been playing RB and GH for years using the guitars as left-handed (which has made the whammy bar extremely hard to use). I'd love if I could use a right-handed guitar as it would give me far more options, but hold a guitar left-handed just feels natural to me.

EDIT: for the record I've tried holding my RB guitar "normally" (right-handed) and it feels completely unnatural. I've even tried playing and while I get my left hand isn't trained to fret, I just didn't feel a connection playing that way. Also doesn't help that I'm left-handed in most things I do ;)
