Do you guys consider Shenmue an RPG?
Not at all. I consider it more in line with point and click games than RPGs.
Apparently Captain Murphy likes his JRPGs
Sealab was such an awesome show... until the guy who voiced Murphy passed away.

Shenmue is definitely an adventure game. Generally, if the character solos the whole game without any chance for fighting with another character, it is an adventure game. This is why I also think the Legend of Zelda series is adventure. Link is always alone.

Shenmue seem like a modern beat'em up judging from the videos I seen(I never played the game myself to personally judge it). The modern beat'em up generally consists of 3d fighting with hints rpg elements, minor platforming, more advance string combos compare to classic beat'em up and generally have quick time events(Mad World, God of War, Devil May Cry, Wolverine Origins).

Having played and beaten both games I wouldn't classify Shenmue as a modern beat'em up. Maybe if there was more emphasis on the fighting but there's actually very little of it. 80% of the game is walking around while the other 20% is actually fighting.

I agree, adventure better suits it.

Divinity II is such a awesome game that is also really shitty.

Can't wait till it hits the obv 20 price point.
Yeah, and that fucking halfway point battle (spoiler?)
against Dhoulmagus
. fucker raped me so bad until I spent a decent chunk of time farming metal slimes, and even then it was a bitch... bastard.
I remember that.
That and the beginning was the only time I had to farm.

But on the other hand, I didn't even farm as much as I should have. The key point was to get the heal party spell and I stopped 2 levels in because it was boring. Then I beat him with some good ol' strategizing. =D

Just finished Dragon Age and was thinking about trying an Elder Scrolls game for the first time. Picked up both Morrowind and Oblivion and had planned to start with Morrowind.

Pretty tough so far going from such a story heavy party-based game to solo open world wankery, however. Any chance Oblivion would be an easier game for me to adjust to?

The game varies since you can either go into First Person to Third Person. Sometimes you do have a party but usually you have to protect the person. Also it gets really difficult and you can easily do something bad and people can after you such as knights (female too). It is a unique game and I have to say that Bethesda did a good job although you have to replay if you want to join the various guilds since one is based upon magic, warrior, and thieves plus assassin's guild.

I think they're about the same.

Oblivion is better in terms of combat but the level scaling is beyond ridiculous and you can never really slaughter anything.

Good to know. Level scaling is actually a pet peeve of mine in RPGs. If I put 100 hours in I want to be godlike by the endgame.

You don't need to replay the game to do all the guilds. They can be done in one playthrough.

You'll hate it then.

Just beat Y's Book I & II on the Virtual Console. Feels good to beat an old-school RPG I've never played before. The mazes at the end get a little tedious and often it's not clear what your objective is. Still, it was a great game. Nice little animated cut-scenes and some great music. Presentation-wise Y's was a few years ahead of it's time.

Glad I held onto my copy of Y's III for SNES. Looks like it's about time to fire it up.

I remember my cousin had Ys IV for SNES. There are story screens in the beginning that disappear much faster than you can read them. It was so hard, I don't think we could get farther than 5 minutes in.

I did play in one walkthrough but when you play darker guilds your stats fall for being good (sorry I have not played it for a while to know the exact stats). So, I was saying that playing it with a good/bad character is more balanced. Yes, you are right. One playthrough for all guilds.

I started playing thru the Valkyria Chronicles DLC. Its made me remember how much I love this game. I really hope they do a console sequel after the PSP game.

Also getting raped in Etrian Odyssey 2 now. I've got one character of each class and keep switching them out, since I've found that certain classes do well in certain situations and against certain FOEs. Takes a hell of a lot longer since there's a lot more grinding involved, but I'm in no hurry. Its the perfect game to play in bed to relax me before I go to sleep.

is Valkyria Chronicles DLC worth it? I haven't tried the game yet (yet another in my backlog) but if that sale is still on, might pick it up if it is substantial enough.

Also, just started FFIII DS, and am loving the old school charm so far.

I definitely think the two extra mission packs are worth the sale price, and I'm really loving the Hard EX mode. At $2.99 apiece, you can't go wrong. Wasn't there a couple more mission packs that Japan got that we never saw?

And the old school charm eventually wears off of FFIII DS. It's okay, but not one of my favorite FF games.

DQIV kept me playing the entire game for old school nostalgia. Oh well, I'm playing it to relax before bed for the most part anyway, so hopefully the short play sessions will help.

I hate it when people talk about how old school FF3 is, because the DS version is so much harder and more annoying than the original NES version. Ah, irony. =)

After 44 hours, I've completed Tales of the Abyss. Sheesh, great story, but I swear I visited some of those towns way too many times. I would but it just a step below Symphonia. I liked the characters equally in both, Abyss had a better story, but I liked the titles and recipe system more in Symphonia.

One day I'll finish Abyss...or I'll just watch the anime.

I think I'll hook my PS2 back up in my room this week so I can start Wild Arms 5(I should finish that long before ME2 comes out). I'd prefer to have it hooked up to the SDTV in my basement but my parents just keep dumping stuff in the basement which leaves me very little room to get comfortable.

Is .hack//infection or Wild Arms 3 ~50 hour games, or are they shorter? I need a game to fill the next week of break before SMT:Nocturne arrives.

.hack//infection is a very short game, about 10-15 hours.

I never beat it but I'm pretty sure Wild Arms 3 is a 50+ hour game.

It's not quite 50+ hours but WA3 is easily the longer of the two.

Looks like I'll prolly be about 80-90 too. I'm at ~ 45-50 hrs at the beginning of October (The Journey). Once I finish Journey though, I'm taking a break before diving into the Answer. Mebbe jump on Star Ocean 3 or Last Remnant, once I beat Bayonneta and Batman AA (gotta kill off some of my multitasking, and those are the ones that would be quickest to beat, hehe)

P3 FES The Journey took me about 100 hours. The Answer took me about 20 hours I guess.

I intend to give Star Ocean 3 another try someday. Maybe later next year.

Gonna begin dat DQVIII tomorrow. There goes January.
