RPG-Thread #3 is extremely linear and does not evolve the genre
I'm curious how long Persona 3 FES took for some people. My first and only playthrough was just under 120 hours.
Took me about 60 hours. I've noticed that it takes me a far shorter time to finish games than it does most people.

P3 can be a much shorter game if you avoid messing around with Fusions and Sidequests. I probably finished in about 90 hours. But I imagine I spent a good 10-15 hours trying to fuse certain personas(Time well spent when you see the Thanatos cast "die for me").
Or you could just skip Star Ocean 3(and probably Last Remnant as well) and go play a decent a RPG...
lol, it was down to Star Ocean 3, Last Remnant, or Radiata Stories, but I've already decided against RS. Or mebbe Legaia 2.... I'm slummin! hahaha RPG equivalent of slayin a few hood rats...
I think they're about the same.

Oblivion is better in terms of combat but the level scaling is beyond ridiculous and you can never really slaughter anything.
Are you kidding me? I used to slaughter stuff using a bow with Enchantments added to it. I would make stuff go flying when I hit them.

P3 I spent 110 hrs. My FES playthrough I didn't get all the way through.

Im thinking of starting up an RPG once I finish AC2, but that might take me awhile.

Devil Summoner 2 or Rouge Galaxy.

YOU CHOOSE.

I played a couple of DS games this week.

Mario n Luigi inside bowser - the concept sounded cool so I wanted to try it out... shyt is maaad boring. I remember playing thru the first game on GBA and not enjoying it... Im sure I am not gonna play any more of this game.

Etrian Odyssey - seemed like a cool game, but half my party dies on the first battle!! X_X I think I should read a faq on this game...

When the choice is between an average RPG (Rogue galaxy, but I enjoyed it) and an exceptional RPG, there is no contest. I say Devil Summoner 2.

I don't remember exactly, but I think I spent a little over 100 hours on P3 FES. I'm at 96 hours in P4 and very close to the end (I think). I'll probably need another 10 or so, though, because I think I need to grind a bit and level up to get some of the better personas.

I was trying really hard to finish P4 before Xmas, but I didn't quite make it so now it's on the backburner while I revel in the joy/frustration that is Demon's Souls.

I don't know what level you were, but I think I had hit level 13-15 and had several Enchanted weapons and some relic weapons... and even then, all the fights were taking forever. Most of the time when running through those red gate thingies, I quit fighting and just ran all the way to top because it just took too long to fight.

I'm at 80 hours on P3 and in the month which Ryoji shows up. I stopped playing that back in February...I should really finish it up and start P4.

Started up DQ8 today. I was a little oft-put in the beginning, but after a couple of hours its starting to grow on me. I can already see the simple charm of the gameplay; very old-school with a shiny coat of last-gen paint.

About how long is the game? And is the length due to actual content, or is there a lot of backtracking and grinding involved that adds time to the game?

So, I'm about 9 hours into Digital Devil Saga 1. I had to do a bit of grinding for the boss in the fortress just because I hadn't learned the Media Mantra yet. The gameplay is really solid and the graphics are very nice. I do love how dark the plot and dialogue are. I feel it suits the SMT franchise more.

I just keep getting distracted from the PS2 by Modern Warfare 2....stupid current gen...I can't ever catch up on my backlog!

Just got a 360, and trying to decide on a rpg when I am not playing L4D,L4D2 with my sons.

Infinite Undiscovery
Lost Odyssey
Last Remnant
Morrowind
Oblivion (on it's way form Goozex)

or get something else, and flip those on goozex.

Tales of Vesperia. I have both Infinite Undiscovery and Lost Odyssey but only played about 5 minutes of Lost Odyssey, it seemed cool. But Tales is a pretty nice game and its easy to pick up and play after long breaks from it.
Out of those, pick from Lost Odyssey or Last Remnant.
Thanks,

I'll probably start Lost Odyssey.

Added Tales of Vesperia to my request list on Goozex. :)

I think mine was 30-40hr.

I missed a LOT of stuff in the game though. For most of the game up until the end, I had Angelo using the second bow that you can buy.

I agree with the other posters that Tales of Vesperia is the RPG to play on 360, but from your list I actually had the best time with Infinite Undiscovery. Give it a try anyway; I won't say all of the bad reviews aren't warranted but if you are on the right wavelength there is a lot of fun to be had.

If you don't have a PS3, add Eternal Sonata too. The PS3 version is better though.

Listen to this man. IU did get a bad rap but it's actually pretty enjoyable.

I guess anything on that list that isn't from Square.....

Just picked up Dragon Age. I needed a new 360 so I picked one up at Best Buy and got 1 free game. There wasn't much I wanted to play, but I've always been a little intrested in Dragon Age. But first comes Borderlands.
So I'm reading on other forums and sites that FF XIII has no towns and no exploration. Has anyone here played the import?
Wha-? I must admit I haven't read anything about the game. Please tell me it's not just a bunch of missions, ala X-2. I love exploring!
So I'm reading on other forums and sites that FF XIII has no towns and no exploration. Has anyone here played the import?
I'm glad to hear this, the thing that turns me off from most RPGs is being given a huge overworld but never being told where the fuck to go next.
I'm glad to hear this, the thing that turns me off from most RPGs is being given a huge overworld but never being told where the fuck to go next.
That doesn't bother me unless I've put the game down for a while and when I pick it back up have no idea what to do or where to go.

Haha and in the next Madden you just run the football and pass. I will wait and see what my friends think of it but it sounds really disappointing. My favorite thing about JRPGs is exploring and getting lost on the world map and finding mysterious new places/monsters.
FFX didn't have any exploration and it turned out fine.
But it still had towns the visit.
That doesn't bother me unless I've put the game down for a while and when I pick it back up have no idea what to do or where to go.
That's even worse, haha.

For example: I got FFVII off of PSN (I had never played it before, was an N64 kid). It's fun, but I never have any idea where to go! I'll go through a dungeon or a plot point, and then it just drops me off on the Overworld with super-vague at best instructions. So I'll wander around for a while, but eventually random battles get boring when you have no clue where to go so I go crawling to gameFAQs. The game is fun when I DO know what I'm supposed to be doing, though.
FFX didn't have any exploration and it turned out fine.
It had towns, dungeons, treasures and puzzles. Apparently the new FF has none of that, it's a straight path with battles, a boss fight and some cut scenes.

Seems to me like that pretty accurately describes FFX too.
It had towns, dungeons, treasures and puzzles.
I don't get what having towns and dungeons has to do with exploration. Diablo II has towns and dungeons.

woah, so FFXIII is supposedly a movie with QTE's in the form of battles and boss fights? That can't be right... or good. Oh well, I'll still play it when it comes out.

Also Chibi_Kaji, I took your advice and skipped over SO3 and TLR for now... and booted up Enchanted Arms :booty: And what's worse... I'm sorta enjoying it. It's generic as hell, and has some of the worst voice acting I've heard recently (though I recognize most of the VO's, they must have just had horrendous direction or something), but there's just something about it that keeps me going. Almost "Legend of Dragoon" so generic it's good... Actually, am I the only one that wants a PS3 Legend of Dragoon game?
I at least felt like I was exploring the areas in FF X... There were plenty of nonlinear areas to find treasures and NPCs in X.

I really don't give a shit about there being no towns in FFXIII. The only purpose towns serve most of the time is shops, inns, and searching for that one NPC to advance the story. I could see if it was a WRPG where you'd find tons of sidequests to take on, but it's not.

I'm still going to give it a try, but do you think it even has branching dungeon paths?

I don't even know if this game will have equipment or items. What fun will it be to hold forward and pick a few menu commands every few minutes? At least towns had some hidden treasures and houses to poke around. There's no risk in the battles either according to one of the sites I read.

I know we have to wait and see, but all of these impressions are making me wary.

After my disappointment with FFXII, I think I'm gonna hold off and wait till this drops down the inevitable $15 dollar Greatest Hits Platinum Version Ultimate Edition Definitive International Remix Version. Ever since IX, the whole series is kinda, meh. And I kinda liked X.

X and XII are made by different team. And we never got any International version

Started playing Valkyrie Profile on the PSP. I like it a lot better than the second one, I prefer the battle system to the running around battle system in the second one.

Valkyrie games are mainly strategy right? I was thinking of expanding my psp collection of games to play and I was thinking of going retro and getting FF1 for the psp.
Actually, am I the only one that wants a PS3 Legend of Dragoon game?
That would rule. I loved the first game. I would actually really like to play the prequel, "Legend of Dragoon: The Dragon Campaign."

Eh, not really. It's closer to a traditional turn-based game than a strategy game.
