Hey I like the wandering parts of DQ VIII, it's the battles and interface that tick me off. Nice picture.

Record of Agarest War hasn't gotten me interested yet. Looks like a bad Japanese dating sim married with a mediocre strategy RPG, containing last-gen graphics.

DQ8 has its hooks in me. I'm about 10 hours in so far and moving along nicely.
That would rule. I loved the first game. I would actually really like to play the prequel, "Legend of Dragoon: The Dragon Campaign."
Wait, that's not a real thing, is it? Cuz that would be hot as hell!

Also never new Record of Agarast War was a giant fan service game. Don't know if that makes me more or less interested...
I may need to get to importing.
meh.

it's just cleverly placed mosaic over things that shouldn't be censored in the first place.

Do you mean Dragon Quest 8 or another game? Since DQ is older it is hard to tell if that is what you mean.

Assuming you are, I love that game. It has a lot of character and charm, despite a straight forward story, but presentation in my mind is more important than the details of the story. Also had just the right level of challenge to me.

Yes, Dragon Quest 8. It has an old-school charm about it that reminds me of summers between high school spent playing DQ4 on my NES for hours on end when I didn't have any responsibilities like I do now. Ah, the good ol'days. Back then, I would play RPGs for tens of hours a day. I remember marathoning Final Fantasy 1 with a buddy of mine one summer weekend staying out in my parent's camper parked out in the back lawn.

These days I'm lucky if I can spend more than an hour a day playing RPGs. I hate growing up.
Started up DQ8 today. I was a little oft-put in the beginning, but after a couple of hours its starting to grow on me. I can already see the simple charm of the gameplay; very old-school with a shiny coat of last-gen paint.

About how long is the game? And is the length due to actual content, or is there a lot of backtracking and grinding involved that adds time to the game?
Glad to hear you're enjoying DQ8; I really loved playing through it. FYI, I think most people put anywhere from 80 to 120 hours into it, depending on time for side quests (e.g. monster arena/monster hunting) and time for extra missions after the last boss (not really a spoiler, don't worry).

Funny enough, I did not unlock the monster arena until after I beat the game.

We don't need no grinding!

Happy New Year, all :) Just got back from snowy New England. I didn't get any RPGs for Christmas, thank goodness, but I am sooo tempted to pick up Torchlight via Steam before that sale ends...

Started playing Chrono Trigger on DS last week; right now, I'm at the beginning of the Zeal section. Loving the port, and glad that they carried over my favorite Woolseyisms from the original (Ozzie, Slash, and Flea's names).

I have no idea what Torchlight is... but hella ppl talked about it so I bought it for $5.

I also bought Mass Effect for $5... I didnt even like that game on xbox, and I dont even think my computer can play it.

but it was $5.

almost bought Witcher too coz that chac guy always talked about it... but decided to wait until the 2011 sale.

Finished Valkyrie Profile. I got the A ending, but I had to reload an old save from the end of chapter 4 after getting to chapter 7 once because my seal rating was off. Before the final dungeon, I was killing the bosses in 1 turn, but the 3 bosses in the last dungeon were way more difficult than those.

I think I'm going to try to tackle Persona 1 next. Any advice or important things I need to know?

I would look to see what to do to get the "good" ending. I apparently got the bad ending at around 25 hours. There are some really random ask answers you have to give about 3/4 of the way through to one of the charcters and that apparently dictates the ending.

Good to know. Thanks. I remember they did the same thing in Persona 4. About 3/4s of the way through, you were asked like 8 questions which culminated in whether or not to
kill the murderer.

What does everyone think about the death of the traditional town strolling in the new final fantasy xiii? I'm a big fan of jrpgs but i don't know how I feel about it being sacrificed for the often less appreciated cinematic, linear gameplay style.

Don't get me wrong, I'll probably end up buying a PS3 once Heavy Rain comes out since Fahrenheit was an amazing game for the PS2/PC but it's not the style I expect when I open a FF title.

I haven't read much about it, but good riddance. JRPGs nowadays bog down way too much when you get to a new town. Spending a half hour talking to a bunch of uninteresting NPCs without anything good to say gets old after a few times. Didn't realize how much it bothered me until I played DQV and replayed Chrono Trigger, I was in and out of towns in 5 minutes. The recent Tales games... ugh.

Torchlight is a dungeon crawler based off Diablo. It is a ton of fun and definitely worth $9.99 on Steam. I bought Mass Effect too, until I realized my Pixel Shader is version 2 not 3.

I finally got a copy of SMT: Nocturne and it is already one of my favorite games. i have high hopes for this story to become really top-notch. Plus the people are drawn in a similar way to Devil Summoner, which I love.

That reminds me I still need to finish Chrono Trigger on the DS. I'm starting to drag now in Etrian Odyssey 2, so I might put that on hold and go back to CT. I was about half-way thru it IIRC.

But I'm moving along briskly in DQ8. I'm about 15hrs in. My biggest complaint right now is the lack of a visual cue when the alchemy jug is ready, because I tend to play it with the sound down and my own music playing in the background.

Just started TWEWY and as soon as the training wheels come off I am getting my ass handed to me. Unless I missed something, the only thing I can do out of battle (so far) is choose my pins. So I must be doing something wrong during the battles. I put my partner on full auto and still get destroyed. Am I supposed to grind? Maybe I just suck with the stylus.

Have you tried lowering the difficulty? That might help, though you've less of a chance of getting more/rarer pins after battle, IIRC.

I looked for a lower difficulty, all I had was normal. So as long as I had the game on, I tried it once more - and had no problems at all. Yesterday night I polished that fucking dog probably 10 times and lost every time! Today I beat it on the first try without even healing! I didn't change my strategy or anything, so I don't know what was going on. Anyway, I've unlocked Easy now so I can fall back on that if I need to.

Reminds me of the end boss to Shadows Hearts 2 or 3. The first 2 times, I didn't even get a turn. The next time, I beat it without any party member dying. Random numbers conspire against me.

You'll get better pins eventually, but 2 tips:

Make sure you are doing the correct action for the pins. A number of times I would try a new pin, only to realize it was a press pin, not a tap pin, etc.

DODGE! IIRC, you're invincible during a dodge, so master being able to (very quickly slide the stylus from Neku to where you want to dodge to) Also, especially for some bosses, dodging is the only way to avoid some attacks (and your partner's dodge, usually up on dpad, if the boss is focusing on the top screen)

Started playing Persona. I'm about 6 hours in. I opted to not go for the Snow Queen Quest for the first playthru (chances are I'll never get to it). I'm enjoying it. Though there are way too many different elements for attacks.

I am still undecided about WKC. I have so many games at the moment and I dunno if I will be able to give it the time it deserves.

Ditto.

I'll probably wait till later this summer before picking up WKC. Hopefully there will be a price drop by then.

Q1 is just too fucking crazy for releases.

Do you guys think Arc Rise Fantasia has a hope of selling a decent amount? It has some similarities to the Tales games and I think some of the developers from Tales worked on it. I really want it to show that the Wii can carry the RPG genre as well as the other consoles. I'm not asking it to become the PS2 of RPG games, but a couple decent ones would be nice.
Do you guys think Arc Rise Fantasia has a hope of selling a decent amount?
No. I don't remember who's publishing it, but I can guarantee the marketing push will be minimal.

Maybe it can, but I don't think it ever will.

Arc Rise Fantasia!! I am hype for that game!!

jus wanna say...

still tryin to play Devil Summoner... this encounter rate is insane... took me hella long to beat the dungeon coz every 2 step is another fight >_

I think Ignition got Arc Rise Fantasia and kicked XSeed off it. So terrible translation incoming.

No it wont. RPGs that are not published by Square have no chance in hell of selling more then 200k copies.

Still cant decide on what RPG to play. Thinking of starting The Last Remanant back up on pc, but Bayonetta is today, and that is all important.

Yeah, the lack of XSEED/move to Ignition doesn't bode well for Arc Rise Fantasia's fate.

As for RPGs, I think the Wii will eventually get some good JRPGs, since Dragon Quest X will be on the system and a lot of developers will likely take that as a sign. However, in the west, JRPGs are a niche genre again, so yeah, non-Square RPGs will have a tougher time of it. As it stands, the DS is still the current-gen RPG system, IMO.

I hear a lot of people say that, but what RPGs does the system have that are so good that aren't remakes or ports? I can think of two.

The same could pretty much be said for every system, I think.

I had a feeling you would ask something like that.

I could come up with a list, but I don't want to get bogged down in a console flamewar  The majority of RPGs I've played on the system are original, and damn near all of them have been good to great.
The same could pretty much be said for every system, I think.
I'm not going to argue that. It's just that I see the DS always being championed as this great system for RPGs and I've only found two. Super Robot Taisen and TWEWY.

I'm not trying to start a flame war. I'm honestly curious as to what great RPGs I'm missing.

Bowser's Inside Story, Rei. Duh.

Speaking of which, I'm almost done with it. I just need to level Bowser to 40 so I can get those sweet Intruder Fangs, and it's off to the final battle.

No accounting for taste :p (I haven't played Bowser's yet, but it's in my backlog and I've loved the other Mario & Luigi games, so...)

Anyway here is my DS collection. Out of the original RPGs I've beaten, my favorites have been Etrian Odyssey, the Rune Factory games, Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, the Dragon Quest spinoffs, Rondo of Swords, and, of course, TWEWY. Oh, and Guadia Quest in Retro Game Challenge, if that counts.

I thought he was just reading your mind?

I'm actually considering buying Dragon Age again(well after I play ME2 on 360) for the PC when my laptop comes in. I'll probably just get the regular version from steam. I don't need to buy another collectors edition...again...I think.

The only handheld RPG that I'm looking forward to right now is the new SMT game coming in March. Everything else is just "wait and see" for me.

Right now waiting for White Knight Chronicles & Final Fantasy XIII. Otherwise, there's a few I can wait on such as Star Ocean for PS3. Plus there's Infinite Space on DS which I'm keeping an eye on.
