I don't really get why the idea of a FF7 remake is supposed to be controversial. Square has remade the first six games any number of times. It seems inevitable that the later games will follow suit eventually.
Yeah, but...
- FFVII is the best-selling game in the series, and thus is the one the most people tend to be nostalgic about.
- Square hasn't made many retconny sequels/prequels to other Final Fantasy games several years after the fact.
- FFVII's sequels/prequels brought in a lot of new fans who never played the original, and even if they could, some of them don't want to because they're graphics snobs.
A remake would have to address the needs of both the old fans, who want to see the FFVII they remember, and the new ones, who want the FFVII they imagined through the lens of the sequels/prequels. Whatever they add and/or subtract, a large proportion of the fanbase will be up in arms.
More importantly for Square Enix:
- The most vocal fans who want a remake want it made on the PS3. This will be insanely expensive to make, and there's no guarantee that the company will make a profit on such a venture. The original FFVII cost $40 million to develop, dev costs for a remake would likely be much higher, and remakes always sell less than the originals. A more viable route would be a DS remake, but there would be a huge uproar about that. Better that they make free money via PSN.
- Certain FFVII staffers who are still at Square Enix have said that they want to do a remake, but only if they can get all the key members from the original staff back together again. Seeing as how Hironobu Sakaguchi and others aren't at Square anymore, this has as good a chance of happening as getting the Chrono Trigger Dream Team reunited.
