RPG-Thread #3 is extremely linear and does not evolve the genre
No it isn't, particularly what he said at the beginning about playing FFIV "within its era". The very first time I played FFIV was 2006, and it felt dated and melodramatic. I'd played FFV and FFVI before that (neither within their eras either, though), and both were more refined in their own ways; I enjoyed both of them, too.

The biggest problem I had with the game was that there was no subtlety whatsoever in scenes where it would've been a great benefit. The bits where everyone dies (or "dies"), everyone comes back, and especially when you learn of Golbez's true identity hit you like a sack full of bricks. And I won't even get into the issues I had with the ability system...

I think to really appreciate FFIV, you need to do so strictly from a historical perspective. That, as well as personal nostalgia, I can understand.
What are you talking about? He mentioned that stuff in another post, but the one I quoted was talking about stupid shit.
What are you talking about? He mentioned that stuff in another post, but the one I quoted was talking about stupid shit.
I talked about the most important point he made, not the more pedantic nitpicks, before going off my own tangent about on why I personally don't think the game's held up well :p
So here's a question about Fallout 3. I just finished Galaxy News Radio. Should I go back and do everything in Megaton first? I feel really underpowered right now. Everything is kicking my ass, and I'm constantly running low on ammo and supplies.
What sort of stuff in Megaton? Blood Ties and the Survival Manual? You should certainly take care of Blood Ties, I think. You should do parts of the Survival manual, if I remember right, there are some parts that take you pretty far out there so I would say just take care of those parts when another quest takes you in that direction.
@ Rod, I have a buddy who couldn't get into it ether. Game isn't for everyone, but for me it wonderful, haven't beat it as much as Rei ( only 4 times here ) I think what did it so much for me about DA was the chars. I give a shit about each one of them, and really really enjoy the script.
I see the potential in Dragon Age. My brother's beaten it twice. It's just as you put it: "not for everyone." In no way do I think it's a bad game. Fallout 3 is another game I tried hard to get into and couldn't. Oh well, Mass Effect 2 in a week, I know I'll enjoy that.

I'm wondering if Star Ocean International is going to have a low print run... I want it game but $60 is a lot.

I'm off the Resonance of Fate bandwagon due to the grid-based dungeons. I think I'm more interested in White Knight Chronicles and Final Fantasy XIII.

Grid-based dungeons? How does that work?
I'm super excited for WKC. Almost completely for the giant knight robot thing.
Do any of you guys follow any RPG-specific blogs or anything? Just curious.
Trading grid based dungeons for line based dungeons is pretty much the same (although grid based may have more exploration). White Knight Chronicles is the only thing I'm still rooting for now.

After playing the demo I've also become wary of Resonance of Fate. Unless I see positive reviews from western gamers I won't take a chance on it. That and the words "Tri-Ace" sounds like I'm being setup for disappointment.

Good point but FF X was quite good so I'll see what my friends think of XIII.

Star Ocean International and White Knight are definite buys for me. I like Tri-Ace games but I know I'm in the minority.

After wasting my money on Rogue Galaxy I refuse to buy White Knight. And I'll wait to get SO4 since I expect a price drop by the time I clear out some of my RPG backlog... which I never seem to get to.

I too will wait for a price drop on SO4. I still gotta play thru SO3 someday.

I'm still undecided about many of the upcoming JRPGs, including Resonance of Fate, WKC, Last Rebellion, Agarest War, and a couple others who's names escape me at the moment. I'll wait until some reviews come out and decide then.

Other than FFXIII, about the only JRPG that I am sure I'll grab is 3D Dot Game Heroes, but that's more of an action/adventure RPG. A $39.99 MSRP FTW!

If you're not decent with rifles, the chapter of the Survival Guide about Mirelurks can be downright futile. Those things are a massive pain if you're not a good shot. For me, at least, a good amount of frustration could have been saved if I'd leveled up my rifle skills first.
I still gotta play thru SO3 someday.
No, you really don't.

I'm very interested in Agarest War because of the wtf factor. But if I ever get it I will probably be forced to pick up the 360 version since that's the only way you can get a physical copy of it(In the US). And the PS3 version is supposed to be one of the largest games on PSN.

So where do I go to do Blood Ties? I did a couple parts of the Survival Guide (Super-Duper Mart & the Radiation thing) and I might do the Landmine thing.

There's some random girl wandering around Megaton, her name's Lucy West.
On the way to the landmine thing, you can get Dogmeat too, if you haven't already.
Morrigan is a riot. Next time through I'm going to play more evilly and try to get her to jump mah bones. As it stands, she seems to enjoy taunting me constantly.
Yeah, Morrigan is awesome. Her and Shale in a party = awesome banter and commentary. I also have Wynn in my party, but that's just to have a dedicated healer. Otherwise, I pretty much hate the stuffy old bitch...

On a DA note, is there anyone else that can't stant Liliana's accent? It's like a mumbly lisp with pseudo-french inflections. barf. I almost dread any expansions that take us into Orlais.
The only person I thought to die but didn't was Cid. I never thought that any of the others died off by what they did. Rydia and Yang where washed over board, it never hinted they where dead, and Yangs wife even says that he is okay and tells you not to worry.

As for them not getting beat up in battles, Cecil gets beat up a lot in that game, Edge also gets put in his place. I like the fact that they chars wern't so over powered that people like Porom and Palom did what they did to save the rest. Tellahs role I thought was dead on, he saw his chance and took it. To me it seemed they kept the cast the under dogs in a very convincing way. Not one step in the quest was easy for them, something I wish was better done today by devs.

IV and VI are both outstanding, and do what a lot of RPGs today don't, focus on the story. While IV may have pulled on the heart strings a little much, it wouldn't have worked if you didn't care about the cast. It seems to many RPGs today try and get by with flashy graphics and redundant ass plots that's a six year old thought up.

For me the only JRPG that stands out this gen is ToV. I have found myself moving more and more to WRPGs, which while the plot may be lacking in some they give you the option to make your own story which is enjoyable in its own right.
Tales of Vesperia is decent but I find Lost Odyssey to have a old school game play and a decent story. I actually prefered Tales of Abyss over Vesperia but that's last gen.

For some reason I just can't get into Fallout 3 and Dragon Age: Origin, I find the story to be extremely boring and too much of a freedom. Not to mention Wrpg LOVE to have a semi end of the world setting and all the doom and gloom. Fallout 3, survive after nuclear war; Dragon Age, World is about to be destroyed. I find Mass Effect to be acceptable through for some reason.
Really? You really care about Alastar? Gods how I hate that fucker. Why must every Bioware game after KOTOR have a Carth? ME had Kaiden, DA has Alaster, and Jade Empire had, well, the entire game was kinda a Carth to me. Only Bioware game I didn't love (and actually kinda hated).
Yeah I like Alastar. He was made to be a follower. His back story was well written to tell you why he is the way he is. He had the Templars telling him what to do, then he latches on to Duncan, than to you. He never wants to be a " Hero ". Alastar is more at home sitting back and being told what to do, and only really bitches when you try to force him out of that role. To me Alastar fills out the " normal " role pretty well. Which is nice, not everyone has to be positive. I think that is why so many people don't like him. Cause he never becomes a hero, he is just your average guy.

Not to mention Wrpg LOVE to have a semi end of the world setting and all the doom and gloom.
Yes but how is this different from JRPGs have teenagers saving the world? This is simple the conflict both sides WRPGs and JRPGs have become comfortable and complacent with. We all know this, it's not really the end result, but how we get there that makes one of these games great.

There are problems with FFIV, but everything you mentioned is trivial and just plain silly.
what's silly?
the fact that some guy comes out of nowhere to help cecil? you don't even talk to him on the way to the room! how does he know what happened?!

the crystals. as far as i know, they don't do anything but activate the tower of babil. hence, why are they guarding them, and why do we have to protect them? and of course, the fact that two are already captured by the time you go underground, if they were so important and they all have crystal rooms, where the hell were the other two?

the evil writhing hand. what the hell just happened? it makes no sense! how did golbez get there? why can't he just go anywhere? why can we not stop the hand of justice? what else can he do? why didn't he just do that for all the other crystals?

the moon. the freakin' moon. it came out of nowhere.

Well, I most definitely have not. I've mainly just done the story stuff so far. I don't know what I need to do to 'play after you beat the game' either. I assume it's just story related.

If you want to continue playing after having beaten the game, you need to download the Broken Steel DLC.

Game of the Year Edition...

I know I need
some backup characters, but I don't know which ones

Chibi is correct. Broken Steel is a good DLC. You actually have more features compared to the original. I think it is a good game expansion to the game. Well about your statement
back up characters, I do remember playing it you deal with the secret organization that acts like the US government and how they try to still rise even when they loose. However, the mutant you will meet later (sorry I apologize) is the only character NPC. Other than that you might have a little help but you are still a little early in the game.
.

The person who mentioned Alastar as interesting is somewhat correct. He is a follower. He basically does this right after Duncan and the King are betrayed. You automatically make all the serious choices and it is a little annoying but still you are the main character so you will make choices. Question for anyone. Why is Sten negative when I want to help the
boy at redcliffe? I lost -10 loyalty for using the mages at the magic circle when I decided to save both the mother and son's life
.

I just finished
Tranquility Lane and said I'd go do stuff on my own.
I have Dogmeat as a companion now, so I don't really know what my next step will be. Apparently there's a missable Bobblehead at
Raven Rock?
in an upcoming story mission. Maybe I should learn more about that first.

I got to Level 8 being Good (I also got Neutral and Evil by reloading the save for the 2 achievements). I think I'm going to go finish the Wasteland Survival Guide next. It seems like the sensible thing to do. I also need to get some bottle caps somehow, because I'm always low.

As much as I want to disagree with you here, I think you're spot on.

I loved FFIV, but I also played it at release on the SNES.

Comparatively, FFV doesn't hold much of an interest with me, let alone a whimsical nostalgic feeling. It doesn't help that I didn't play it until 2004-ish.

Historical perspective indeed. You're quite right.

Pretty sure it's cuz Sten is a dick. But in all seriousness, I think it's cuz if you are doing anything other than killing darkspawn, he's pissed cuz you're "wasting time". i lost a few points with him the short time I had him (Shale's my tank, so no need for crabby Sten) when I did side quest stuff.

The energy weapons bobblehead is indeed missable (as is the medicine one which I hope you've gotten).
Dogmeat isn't particularly strong. He'll probably die if he tries to take on anything more powerful than raiders. If you care about that, I'd say just leave him back in Megaton. Although, Dogmeat actually levels with you and is near-invincible when you get to level 30.
Thanks, I am going to use another character for the side quests. He is strong and I have some good armor for him.
I wouldn't worry too much about it, just don't piss him off so much that he leaves (I think he leaves if his oppinion of you falls too low, but don't quote me on that). The "gift" system is so fucking broken it's unbelievable. Play how you want it, and bribe their love of you.

The gift system is not that bad. It has worked if you want to try to get the 'romantic' path with some characters. For example, it has worked well for Morrigan when you
go to the magic circle and pick up the truth about her mother and why she has lived a long time
. Sten is a good character and adding a stronger armor and enchanted swords as helped me in rough situations. Wynne although good with healing does not have much other uses. I am going to look up what gifts I can give him. About the point system. I remember being a total jerk to him when at the camp once. He actually liked how I basically told him off and gave me some approval points. I was confused but the game is set up that way.

Awesome, Atlus USA just sent out an email announcing PS3: Portable. It says the game will be released in July for Retail an PSN.

Now to see what type of swag they'll offer. I'll be interested to see if they just reprint/package the same stuff they did for the original P3 (Artbook & Soundtrack). I'm tempted to get it, though I already have P3 as well as FES. Atlus knows I'm a sucker

Atlus must have done a stealth maneuver as well. It's already up for pre-order at GameStop and Amazon for $40. (Amazon link here) I'm looking forward to seeing everything they changed, as I didn't really research it (I only know that you can play as a female instead)

They can't really repackage the original OST and artbook since the game will have some new music(Seems the Female character will have different music) and characters. But I'm still thinking about importing the OST since I'm sure the one we will get in the US will only have the short version of the op theme.

And it's not much of a stealth move when they send emails out.

Well, stealth was a bit of a tongue-in-cheek remark :p (though I was speaking someone in the sense that they must have done it pretty darn close to sending the e-mails out) Usually I see Atlus announcements days before I see it pop up on some site. Oddly enough as well, I didn't see an Amazon link in their e-mail.

damn, DQ5 getting its dues.

how is demon's souls? i was looking to play an RPG. i was actually going to hook up the PS2 and play DQ8 again, as well as finally finish FFX-2 and Romancing SaGa.

I thought Dissidia was a fighting game of sorts? Has anyone bothered to play Magna Carta 2? I went though the first one but it didn't blow me away.
snip
well that's a great list, glad I have most of them.

lurking in here for awhile, but I am a hardcore rpg gamer. Just don't have alot of time ;)

What has me worried is that the "next gen" is totally skipping over us.

Looking at the PS3 and 360 votes... there is only one awarded for the PS3, and two of the three for 360 are not exclusive, and far better on the PC side.

This is mainly #1 on both consoles why I am not getting either yet.

Actually PS3 would have been before 360 only because of the Blu player, but the wife did a sneaky attack and bought one without talking to me first.

As for games I'm playing, I'm still tackling PiT to move to Browser's Inside Story... and waiting for Ubi to drop Might and Magic down to a normal ubi price ;)

I'm really hoping by the sales of MM, that Ubi would finally do a port of HoMM of some kind. Remake of Dragon Bone staff with some added content if they own that IP.

The Japanese RPG makers have largely migrated to the portable systems, and it seems likely to stay that way for the forseeable future. There is just too much risk for anyone except Square-Enix to develop big-budget AAA JRPGs for the next gen consoles, and even they have been badly burned on misfires like The Last Remnant and Infinite Undiscovery. Apart from Square, I think we're going to continue to see a lot of cheapies like Disgaea 3, Last Rebellion, and Cross Edge that barely push beyond what the PS2 could do, and maybe a Tales game once in a while. The action is on the DS and PSP now.

On the subject of Clash of Heroes, it is an Ubi game but I've heard some concern that it has sold much better than expected and may become rare relatively soon. Although, it could always turn into a World Ends with You situation where it goes out of print for a while and then comes back with a huge reprint and stays cheap.

Demon's Souls is fucking amazing. Really surprised me how much I liked it, possibly GOTY for me. It's tough as nails, but in an old school skill-is-necessary way, not a cheap way. Absolutely amazing game.

That's what I kinda worried about.

I'll keep an eye out, I know there are so retailers that aren't carrying it at all.

Yeah, I went ahead and got it for $28 since I had a $10 game credit at Amazon I needed to use anyway. If it turns out that I could have had it for $15 a year from now, I won't be too upset.

I'm probably going to get Clash of Heroes myself soon; it looks like a lot of fun, and I don't want to miss out if it's going to become rare. However, I also wouldn't mind waiting if a reprint does come about after all. How is Ubi when it comes to those sorts of things, typically?

That one had me as well, though the site covered it pretty extensively last year, and the game does have leveling, so I guess it qualified, somehow.

This. Although, as long as you take it slowly and realize it's not a button-masher, it's not really as hard as people make it out to be. Then again, I mostly use magic, not as much melee.

When I loaded my profile last night and it said I'd already put in 48 hours, I was blown away. It only seems like I've put in around 20. It's that good.
"Most Completed?" What does that mean?
lol, I did that at first too, but then I got tired of spamming what was essentially "magic missile" chip damage. And yeah, I don't remember what my time was (40-50ish hrs?) but that was all in less than a week. I haven't played a game that much in YEARS, that's how good it is... If Mass Effect 2 wasn't coming out so soon, I'd be into a NG+ for sure.
