RPG-Thread #3 is extremely linear and does not evolve the genre

I think Xenosaga has a fun battle system and a decent story. I've never even finished episode I though. The one game I just can't get into on PS2 that everyone loves is Shadow Hearts Covenant. I just don't like how complicated a simple attack command is, or even using a heal potion.

I am playing FF IV DS at the moment and it's great... I have the battle setting at maximum speed though. Why on earth would you want to wait for time gauges anyway?

At the mid point of the game, everyone gets faster so you have to readjust the speed to make it easier to deal with.

My rant with the speed though, had to do with animations being so slow =)

The animations are a bit slow, I prefer the way the characters swung in the original. The "ching ching" was much more satisfying than Cecil's more realistic swing on DS. Still, the remake is awesome, it's great seeing familiar sites come to life in 3D. Not saying that the DS version is utterly superior, just that it's a great way to revisit one of my favorite games.

I couldn't get into Covanent either. I tried, I really did, to like it. But I got to Russia (Moskow, I think?) and just realized I wasn't having fun. I really liked the first one too, so idk.

And actually, I'm also playing IV DS. I agree with kainzero, the animations just take too damned long, even at "high speeds". I hate that everyone's ATB is full, but I'm just waiting for all the animations to finish. Otherwise fallin in love with IV all over again (first on SNES, then on GBA, now in 3d. would really love V and VI remade too)

Really enjoying Etrian Odyssey 2 lately. Only problem is I'm at level 8 and after reading through some of the gamefaqs message boards I want to switch out some of my level 20 characters for newbie level 1 Hexers and Beasts.

How much negative karma does Strictly Business give you in Fallout 3? I can't give the guy 500 caps to just let me in Paradise Falls, so I have 2 options: Do the mission and get lots of bad karma (I'm Capital Crusader, so I think I'd stay at Good Karma overall) or do I go in guns blazing while attempting to get Rescue from Paradise?

You only need to get 1 of the people in order to gain access to Paradise Falls. And it'll lower your karma by 100pts, and karma goes from -1000 to 1000. Chances are you'd stay good. Also, your titles (capital crusader) changes with level, it doesn't indicate how good or evil you are.

Started up Breath of Fire II for the GBA. Very basic JRPG which is what I was looking for. Anyone who played this can give me a mini-review?

BOF2 is awesome!!

u get to build your own town, then recruit all these demon ladies that you can fuse together with your party members to create super party members!!

anyway, seriously one of my favorite old RPGs

Its been a long time since I played BoF2 so I really can't say much about it other than it was better than BoF1, but not as good as BoF3 or 4. I'm still planning on moving to BoF: Dragon Quarter when I finish with DQ8.

Capcom needs to get moving on reviving the Breath of Fire series.

Finally beat Ultima Weapon in FF8. I killed him faster than I meant to, so I didn't get to draw any Ultima spells, but I got 100 Ultima Stones just for winning, so whatever.

Just need to get through Lunatic Pandora, and Disc 3 is over. I'm gonna miss seeing Seifer. :(

I'm pretty sure the town-building was in the SNES version too. I don't think they added any significant content to the GBA version, mostly just minor gameplay tweaks like dashing, a quick-save ability, and a few other little things.

Well after hearing some pretty nice comments about the Ar Tonelico series, I decided to budge and bought both. The GS by my house still had a new LE copy of AR 2 for $29.99 so I got on that, and after searching for a good deal online I found Rosenqueen still had new copies of the first for $19.99. SCORE! Anyone on here played these games? Yay or nay?

God the translation for BoF2 was so bad.

"Do you want to merge with a Shaman?"
"Yes"
"Well, have a good day!"

"Do you want to merge with a Shaman?"
"No"
"Step right in so we can begin the process!"

Started up Final Fantasy 6, and it is quickly climbing my favorite game ladder. Kefka is such a douche, but you can't help but want to see what he does next. You have to love the classic line "son of a submariner."

Haha, I got hat recently and also can't get into it. $20 down the drain.

I did get Devil Summoner 2 though and it's pretty good so far.

I'm in the same boat with Covanent. I tried starting it up twice and can't get 2 hours in. I'm sure it's a fine game, but it didn't hook me.
Kefka > Sephiroth
A pile of shit>Sephiroth. What a terrible villian.

Plus Luca Blight>All

Oh, and you people are out of your minds. Covenant is fantastic. Especially if you played the first game.

What's the problem with Sephiroth? Or is it just that so many fanatics drool over him that you hate him based on principle? I guess I understand that.

The fans are part of it, but I do honestly think he was a terrible villain. Mostly because his motivation was horrible. He was basically a kid throwing a temper tantrum.

I didn't start liking Sephiroth until after Crisis Core, when I understood his motives a bit more. Still not my favorite villain though. That goes to Seifer.

What I don't get is the fangirls who drool over Sephiroth, especially the anemic Advent Children version. The only reasonably attractive version of the character is in the Kingdom Hearts series >_>

I'll be honest, the fans play a huge part in killing Seph's vibe. Him and Cloud have become the poster boys of a sad sub-culture I can't stand.

Yeah there wasn't much to hate with Sephiroth, really. FF7 was more about exploring your own character's problems than hating someone else.

I don't think Kefka really establishes himself as the main villain till the end of WoB, most of the game you think Kefka is the lackey for Emperor Gestahl.

I think that's what Kefka so good. Instead of being this distant, far off boss he was a villain you interacted with several time throughout the game. He's there from start to finish.
Is monster hunter Tri gonna have free online?
If so instabuy.
AFAIK, yes, but you might want to double-check the thread about the game in Wii Discussion.

I've been playing a ton of Shiren lately, but ever since I made one little change in my strategy over the weekend, my progress has improved greatly.

For some reason, I was under the impression that when you went back to the starting town (Canyon Hamlet) on your own, the consequences would be the same as when you died and you'd lose everything save for stored items and bits of story progression. Turns out, you do lose it all... except for your items (both stored and on-hand) and money. Now, not only does that big warehouse in Canyon Hamlet make sense, but it's a bit easier to stock up on items and upgrade equipment. Ordinarily, items in dungeons (not including monster drops and those in monster houses/dungeon shops, all of which can be rare) are only available the first time you're on a floor, and blacksmiths can be used only once, but going back to Canyon Hamlet, whether voluntarily or by death, always resets those things.

I feel a bit relieved that my little (and overdue?) experiment in going back to Canyon Hamlet had these results, but at the same time, I feel that some of the challenge is gone. At any rate, it's been awhile since my last death, which is always a good thing :p

Myke, let us know how good/bad WKC is. And anyone else. I trust you guys here in the RPG-thread than most of those lame reviewers out there.

DQ8 is done. I didn't do all of the sidequests, but I really just feel like moving on to something else. DQ is great, but there's only so much I can take. One month is enough.

I guess that means its time to jump into BoF: Dragon Quarter now. I hear its a short game, so I'm sure I can beat it before FFXIII comes out.

You should at least do the end-game quest, the one that unlocks after you beat the game, and get the alternate ending. It's definitely worth doing and I think the alternate ending is one of the best endings in an RPG, ever. =)

Yes. You only have to do a little bit to get the alternate ending. To finish the entire end-game quest takes tons of grinding.

Also, wow one month. I think it took me several months to be DQ8. Mostly b/c my time to play was morel limited, but still. I think it was around 100 hours.

Maybe I'll come back to it later and do the alternate ending. I'm just really ready to move on now.

But there are several RPGs I'd like to revisit one day. I still really want to do another play-thru of Tales of Symphonia. I'd like to play the Xenosaga trilogy again one day too, because I did zone out a few of the cut-scenes. And I wouldn't even mind playing some of the Final Fantasy games over again like I did a couple years ago, (mostly VI VIII IX and X because I did rush-jobs on those).

There's just so many other new RPGs coming out, and so many others I have never played already in my backlog. I guess I'll just have to wait until retirement. I can seriously see myself when I'm 65, sitting in front of my TV playing RPGs all day while I yell at kids to get off my lawn. What an awesome retirement that'll be.

Oh God no...

I recommended it because it's really short (maybe an hour or so, it's not too hard), it has story elements and wraps up a few mysteries in the game, and it offers a better closure of the game.

Teleprompter. I scroll the script for the news. Normally this isn't my job but the normal guy called in. I was stuck in that tiny room for 4 hours but with BoFII keeping me busy here & there it was actually quite nice.

The dialogue in BoFII reminds me of a NES era RPG, like it was written for an 8 year old. But I was looking for a traditional RPG with quck turnbased battles and this fits the bill pretty good. Also I like the character designs.

Wow, I actually really enjoyed Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days. And the ending was delightfully short... I can't remember the last time a JRPG kept it's ending to less than 30 minutes.

so, I'm close to the end of FFIV (on the moon) and I decided to look up a FAQ to see just how close I was. Apparently I missed out on a decent number of side quests (sylph cave, extra summons, yang, etc)... THIS is why I hate playing RPGs without guides or FAQs, too much is missable unless you randomly visit every location after each main game event...

I don't know which version of FF4 you're playing, but if you're playing the original or the GBA ver...

You miss out on the throwable item that Yang gives you. It's really not that important, it does a lot of damage but whatever.

If you run through the Sylph Cave, you still get Sylph, I think, even though you won't be able to do the Yang sidequest.

The only extra summons I can think of are Asura and Leviathan, and you should still be able to get those.

There are a lot more than just those two. On Earth their is Imp, Bomb, Mage, Cocatris, Sylph, Asura, Leviathan and Odin. On the Moon you can get Bahamut.

Ooh, I forgot about Odin. I assumed he knew about Bahamut because he was still on the Moon, though, and wouldn't consider him "missable."

But the Imp/Bomb/Mage/Cocatris summons, I feel are pretty useless and I don't think they're missable either... just lots and lots and lots of grinding.
