RPG-Thread #3 is extremely linear and does not evolve the genre
"Most Completed?" What does that mean?
It means that it was the game that more of the RPGamer staff beat/completed than any other.

I tried that demo of Lunar for PSP. It's pretty fun, or at least the battle system is. Has anyone here played the original? Was it any good?

Lunar is an amazing RPG. However I never played the orginal Sega CD version only the PS1 remake. Many Lunar purists would call that blasphemy but I love that game. It's a little sappy and cliched, but all the characters are likeable & simple gameplay. Definetly in my top 10 JRPGs of all time.

I agree with everything Rodimus said. Lunar is fantastic, and I can't wait for the PSP version even though I've played every version before it.

I still need to try the Lunar Demo... but I doubt I'll get the game for a long time since I've got a long list of portable RPGs to play...

I'm not the biggest anime fan anymore but I've always liked Toshiyuki Kubooka style. It's simple and charming which complements the game very well. Besides the Lunar series he's also done work on the Nadia & Giant Robo animes.

I played the PS1 port of Lunar and enjoyed it. I thought it was good. The battle system had a good amount of depth and strategy to it, despite being a basic turn-based kind of old-school JRPG.

I started Mystery Dungeon: Shinren the Wanderer last night. Overall, I'm enjoying it. I'd heard it was really hard (never played a "real" roguelike before, either), and holy shit, it is. I must've been booted back to level 1 something like five times, but at least I'm at a good point now.

I'm pretty sure the title for Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days is a mistranslation. It was probably meant to be 358 A's/min, because it seems you just hit A about 358 times per minute to win.

Sounds like previous KH games, except you would sometimes hit Triangle to win faster.

While 2 did have a lot of button-mashing, I thought that the first game had excellent combat.

Yes indeed. KH2 was a bit too over the top with the combat, and especially with splitting up abilities between outfits.

So I started Radiata Stories since it is sitting on the top of my PS2 backlog pile. I like the comedy in it, and hopefully the characters develop well. The battle system is alright for a ARPG, but it could be better.

Honestly the characters don't develop much and the story is pretty brief. It's a 20-hour RPG. That said, I had a lot of fun with it and it's one of my favorite games.
Is this a Slime rice ball? Whatever it is, doesn't look that appetizing...
you don't like nikuman/bao?

it is delicious
i had some in Osaka, sans slime face

Dragon Age is getting interesting. I basically am at
Denerim and I did not realize I had to search the Brother's house and I had to fight the 'impostor' assistant. I then had to go to the Village of Haven where I almost was killed by the crazy village people and Sten doing his questions if you have low rating in friendship as to why I am not going after spawn and I am thinking he is stupid since I need help from everyone or I cannot win. I actually had to fight Dragons and I almost died from that too. Oh well, a good game but I wonder how I am in the temple area and still I have not gotten to the urn yet.
I am now thinking that it is fun and my party's characters are helpful especially Wynne although she is annoying at times. Also I really want to kill Sten but he is the strongest of the characters (I have now). He constantly questions everything I do and I guess I will see if I can give his approval rating up in order to make him stop questioning my decisions even when they are following the main storyline.

I've never tried it; I'm sure there's somewhere in NYC I can get some, so I'll see if I can do so sometime :)

Get on the Japanese marketplace and download the demo if you haven't already.

kensou from KOF enjoys it.

On topic: can't wait for ME2 to come in the mail so I can dive in!

I FINALLY beat Eternal Sonata on the PS3. Man, this took me forever to complete, I just kept getting sidetrackted. But anywho, the game is pretty good but the ending really ruining the game for me. It was the most confusing pile of crap I've watched.

BTW, have any of you completed Dragon Age: Origins yet? I plan on playing past my 3 hours of gameplay right now, and I was just wondering if there are any pretty cutscenes like the commercial had? Not a big deal, but I always look forward to cutscenes =)

I just got to the hero's chapter in Dragon Quest IV last night. I don't understand how they do it. It usually takes a well-written, voice-acted script and maybe some cutscenes for me to get my proverbial rocks off, but DQIV just has some minimalist dialog and I'm already
feeling the weight of the villagers who sacrificed themselves. Then Eliza morphs and at this point I am almost yelling out loud trying to stop her.
Nothing very original, no high production values, but still excellent.

Yep, amazing how those old games can create emotions. Especially when it's the final fantasy games and 90% of the character animations consist of them just jumping up and spinning around (or getting knocked horizontal).

You should check out En Japanese Brasserie on Hudson.

What the hell is up with the Record of Agarest Wars trailer? I was going to get it, still am but now it has a perv feel to it

You could say that about any game where some characters' breasts are larger than their heads.

Shiren is still kicking my ass, but I'm loving it (and I'm also still making progress, slowly but surely).

On a sort of on-topic note, I picked up a bunch of Play Arts figures. The Kingdom Hearts figures I got (Cloud, Sephiroth, Halloween Town Sora, and Mickey in Org. XIII robes) were ones I'd been wanting for awhile and about what I expected, but while I was shopping, I saw the Final Fantasy IX Play Arts in person for the first time and fell in love. The sculpts were great, the paint jobs even better, and overall, they were gorgeous. Before, I had absolutely no interest in them, but now, I had to have them. Vivi was full price, but Zidane and Garnet were on sale, so I picked up all three. Now to figure out where to display them...

Anyway, the new FFIX action figures. Yeah, they're fucking awesome.

I loved the characters in FFIX. They're up there with the ones from VI for being so memorable.

I'm almost done with DQ8. Gonna fly around and do a few of the sidequests now, including the monster arena thing, which I haven't even touched yet. Gonna try and finish it up this weekend.

Not sure what I'll move on to. Probably BoF Dragon Quarter.

Oh, man, you missed out. It's not just a sidequest - you can summon the monsters on your team, and they can really help out in battles throughout the game. At least, that's how I remember it; it's been awhile.
Monado: Beginning of the World from MonolithSoft is now Xenoblade. So maybe we have a new Xeno game coming?

One can only hope. The Xenosaga was a great series, which I'll never understand peoples dislike of "all the cutscenes". Ummm, it's an RPG. A lot of RPGs have a ton of cutscenes... And I'll take long, well animated cutcenes over long periods of talking static portraits any day.
Only good character in FFIX was Freya. She was awesome.
Design-wise, I like all of the playable characters except for Amarant. If there's a second wave of FFIX Play Arts, my top pics would be Freya, Steiner, and Beatrix (who would be a long shot to begin with seeing as she's a supporting character, but she's one of my favorite characters in the game). An Eiko figure would be nice, too, and also ones for certain moogles, like Stiltzkin and Artemecion. None of this will ever happen, though.
I love that Vivi figure. I've never in my life bought a videogame-related action figure but I'm officially tempted.
This Vivi Play Arts makes the third or fourth Vivi in my collection, but it's the best of the bunch. I have a plush Vivi, a color Trading Arts Vivi, and I believe a silver Trading Arts Vivi as well.

I've got a Zidane/Vivi two pack from 2001 that looks great. I think it was a bandai release. The character designs for IX are my favorite in the whole series.

I know just the figures you're talking about, and yeah, they're by Bandai; I have the Freya/Quina set.

FFIX is certainly one of the most aesthetically pleasing Final Fantasies for me. In general, the designs in are wonderful - characters, weapons, world, everything. Some of the other FFs had some better monster and summon designs, and like I said before, I don't like how Amarant looks, but those're my only major criticisms.

And now I want to replay FFIX...

Hear hear. Commander friggin' Cherenkov is more memorable than most RPG's main characters. I honestly couldn't even remember anyone from FFIX until I read some of these posts. Yeah, there are a few weak parts in the Xenosaga plot, but as a whole it excels. I can't think of any other game/series that even comes close to Xenosaga in terms of plot and character development.

My gripe with Xenosaga (Part 1, at least) wasn't so much the cutscenes but the gameplay. I thought the gameplay system was poorly done. Long cutscenes aren't a problem, but when it's an hour and half of all story parts followed by 2 hours of nothing but dungeon... yeah, I have a problem.
