RPG thread 4 has leveled up into RPG thread #5!

This is really off topic but have you guys noticed the general downturn in civility around here lately? Even when willard and magus were going at it, it wasn't anything like some of the garbage I've seen elsewhere like the Heavy Rain thread.
I wish the ToV LE was being sold in stores.
Doesn't bother me. I'm getting it from Amazon.

Shut up asshole! ;) jk

I am trying to power through the last week of TWEWY before ToV comes out. It is going to be a close finish! Expect for team Square Enix to file a petition.

I've had so little to do since graduating, I have wasted a lot of time arguing with that dude over his crappy posts.

I was going to do this thread with a title like "RPG Thread #_ is Inifinitely Undiscovering Your Mom.".

I can't see why people hate VP2 or RS so much. Sure they are both lacking in some ways but they are still fun games.

VP2 was good...except for the whole backtracking bit and the tricky platforming. It was difficult, but not "why fuck am I dying so much in the beginning?" difficult ala Rogue Galaxy. I was surprised by the amount of customization it offered for being a button-masher.
I don't think anyone said they hated VP2 or RS. At least I didn't.
In general the games just aren't very well-liked. At least that's the impression that I got.

Ill say I hate both. VP2 tried to have a new gameplay system which is fine but it was a downgrade over the old system. It wasnt very good and tried to do far too much.

RS was just ass. Its story was pure ass and its gameplay was sub par compared to other similar games.

fuck yes RPG thread keeps on truckin! Tell me what to play here please.
Final Fantasy 10 (got to the part where you go in Sin but never finished)
Final Fantasy 12 (got to where the beach place is with all the hunters)
Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door
Twilight Princess (not an RPG but whatever)
Dragon Quest 8 (never played a DQ game before)
TWEWY
Mario and Luigi Partners in Time
:whee:
...
I'm also trying to finish FFIV DS, FFT:WotL, and P3 + FES. School starts in 2 weeks and I am working full time shift next week so wish me luck. :p

Really? I always thought VP2 was generally well received. It got decent reviews. Like me most fans of the series probably liked VP1 more, doesn't mean they didn't like the sequel.

As for Radiata Story I wouldn't know, never played it.

I think people *generally* liked VP2. I had a lot of issues with the story and with some of the gameplay elements (way too much backtracking) but in the end, it was fun. It was no VP1 though, and I liked VP1 because of the mini-stories (for the same reason I like DQ). The puzzles were way better in VP2 though. Alicia's Nibelung Valesti 1 was sweet looking.

Radiata Stories just didn't feel solid at all. I liked a lot of the musical and directing elements but I thought the story was a mess and the free-roaming to be kinda boring.

Keep playing FFXII. DQVIII is great. TWEWY after those two.

I'd say go ahead and finish off FF10. You're closing in on the end. I had to stop and grind for a little while at the part where you're at, so be careful cause once you get into the last part, its almost like every random battle is like a mini-boss fight.

After not touching Xenosaga Ep1 much for the past few days I'm trying to dig back into it. I haven't really done any of the sidequests at all. Its kind of a thing I've been doing recently. The last few RPGs I've played, I've just been focused on beating the game, whereas I used to want to discover every little secret of the game and complete all the sidequests and find all the loot. Nowadays, however, I'm just more interested in seeing the ending so I can move on to the next RPG in my backlog.

Just wondering how everyone else works on RPGs now. Are you a completist, or do you just want to see the end?

I say FF10.

I'm not a completist at all when it comes to RPGs. I always do something during a game that won't let me get that one item. At that point, it's not worth it to start over.

Valkyrie Profile 2 was the shyt!! that battle system was incredible, so much depth to it omg...

currently playing Parasite Eve... game any good??

I'm hyping myself up for PE3rdBday

Agreed, I love to do the side quests and extra missions except when they are missable.

I wish I could get my hands on a nice copy of VP. I think one day I might just splurge on a sealed copy or a like new one on Ebay.

I love the PE games. They are really good. Well I don't know, it has been about 10 years. Nah, they were fun. Good games. I am going to have to find them again and play 'em!

I really liked Parasite Eve, but I never played the sequel. Its been years since I played it tho. I've seen a few used copies of both PE 1 and 2 within the last year or so that I could have picked up real cheap, but none of them were complete so I passed them up. I wish they would show up on the PSN download service someday. It would be a day 1 download for me.

It is too bad the change PE2 to more like Resident Evil. The original was great aside from Aya slow walking speed

Just found out the Tales of Vesperia guide doesnt have any maps. This is such a huge let down as I already ordered it on amazon. I normally dont get any game guides but the Abyss guide became very hard to find.

That's pretty stupid move for Brady for leaving out maps out of Tales of Vesperia guide. It sort reminded me of their Tales of Symphonia guide, it didn't have maps either. But in their next guide, Tales of Abyss, have maps on their guide. People should buy these Tales guides despite their flaws, they really hold up in value in near future.

Hopefully, they will include maps for Tales of Symphonia 2.

Thanks you just saved me $20. Now I need to find something else to add to my Amazon order to bump it above $25.

I used to be a completionist back in the SNES / PS1 RPG days , and to an extent I still am , but now I'm more focused on simply beating the game , so that I've experienced the game/story and clean out my backlog , then go back to it later. Like right now I'm working on FFX and have no real plans to mess with any of the sidequests or blitzball or any of that stuff and just worry about beating the game. Then once I've beaten some other games in my backlog , I'll go back and replay FFX to try and do everything. Maybe even do some challenge runs.

Tell me what I need to know about Dragon Quest 4. I'm willing to give Dragon Quest a shot, but I don't want any bullshit wandering around grinding for 5 hours between a dungeon or no battle animations or enemy encounters every 3 steps. I love Final Fantasy, but even those games try my patience most of the time, as I hate most JRPGS. But I'm interested in DW4 for DS.

Oh, I did try DW8 but lost patience after the first town. I have finished both suikoden games that matter, though, so I do like the really, really good JRPGs, but only those.

I haven't played DQIV for 10 years, so I can't say how much grinding there was, but you should probably just stay away from the DQ series as a whole.

As much as I want to defend DQ, no. I don't know if they've changed it but I can name a couple of 10-20 minute grind spots, and if you didn't like the battle system in DQ8 then not much has changed.

I can spend time about how balanced and refined the gameplay is but... whatever, agree to disagree.
I just scored PE 1 and 2, for $10. I can't wait to play them again. I am one happy CAG!
That's alot of gaming goodness for $10.

Back to sidequests and 100%, Crisis Core is a prime example of a bad way to implement them. I'm getting ready to beat the game but I've only finished half of the sidequests. It woudn't be so bad if there were more than five maps to do the missions on. I can only go to the mines so many times before I get bored. On top of it, several of the mission branches (or categories?) are blocked off to me because I didn't go wander around town at the right time to talk to Sephiroth fan or help a certain dude out.

I liked that I could use the missions to level Zack up but it's frustrating that I have to go back and play the entire game to get the best materia/items. I'll just have to settle for 55% complete on the missions and go ahead and beat the game. I'd finish all the hard missions but what's the point if I'm not going to really need the items to finish the game and I can't get 100%?
