Square did relese some games on PSN in Japan. The problem is SCEA not getting the game here
Yes but they were none of their flagship titles. The only notable title that released on the PSN in Japan is Xenogears.
I was kind of wondering that too. I would think 7 , 8 and 9 would make sense to be remade on the PSP as opposed to the DS. I never understood why they bothered remaking 1 and 2 again for the PSP when they really didn't even change much from the GBA version.

Square also needs to give us remakes / ports of the rest of the saga series. I've really wanted to play the saga games and square seems to show little interest in doing anything with the series anymore.
Im am fairly positive that FFVIII and IX will not come to the PSP anytime soon since they can still be bought new for the ps1. Also they made alot of money off porting the ff1 and 2 separately to the PSP. They sold about twice the amount of copies compared to Dawn of Souls

What happen in USA doesnt really matter to Square Japan

Well I didn't actually expect them to come anytime soon , since I figured SE would remake the games in order (which they have done so far) so they probably won't get around to remaking 7-9 until the PSPs successor comes out , unless the PSP has a very long market life ala the original gameboy , which would be fine by me.

I am surprised though that 1 and 2 sold that well on the PSP. Especially over here , I could understand in japan since they love them some remakes and ports.

Oof. So those gameplay videos that made the game look crap were basically... it. Well that's a damn shame.

At least there's Tales of Vesperia to suck away my life for a while.
OK. I can wait for the PS1 FFs but what about III-VI?
We just got 3 and 4 , and although 5 and 6 haven't been announced I'm sure SE is already planning them. If your talking about for the PSP I have no idea. Cause if it wasn't for them releasing 1 and 2 on the PSP already , I wouldn't think they would've planned to release the older FF games on the PSP anyway.

There will probably be FF ports for DS, PSP, DS2, PSP2, and so on seeing as SE likes money and people keep buying these games.

Safe to say ToV mops the floor with IU.

As a fan of Tri-Ace I'm kind of disappointed with the art direction of IU. Their other games are much more pleasant to look at.

Looks like the right choice is ToV. Still 7.1 isn't bad, I'll probably end up trying it during a video game drought that usually happens around Feb/March.

Negative, sir.

One guy who worked for Square USA was the impetus in getting Front Mission released for the DS. Our QA team met him. Then we got mad at him for suggesting such a crappy game.

Just had to mention that im about an hour into tales of vesperia and its great soo far. i have never played a tales game before and this one seems really good.

I hate you. I have to wait till Friday :whistle2:(

I hope you enjoy it :)

FM, a crappy game? What?

And yes, Vesperia is awesome.

So hows Makai Kingdom? Is it closer to Disgaea or Phantom Brave(hated it!). Just borrowed from my neighbor but have been investing time instead in Mass Effect to see if I like it before I move.

From what I understand the battle system for Makai Kingdom is very similar to Phantom Brave's battle system

yes. FM is crappy.
it might've had something to do with us playing it for 2 or 3 months.
i thought it was okay but everyone on the team hated it =)

ToV has completely rejuvenated my love of jrpgs so i think im actually going to pick up Infinite Undiscovery. The ign review wasnt so bad that it seems unplayable.

With the time im expecting to put into ToV and college starting soon ill take a shorter rpg to play once im finnished with Tales.
I have the feeling that IU is solid, just that IGN were just hard on it.

I'm just pist it's so short.
I agree. It looks pretty decent.

I never really got into the game myself... Maybe I'll pick up again one day and give it another shot.

IGN has a good review of Makai. I don't know if it's worth going through another SRPG but it sounds decent. Looks to be a combination of Disgaea and Phantom Brave.

I can't take Final Fantasy X anymore. Over the past few days put just over 11 hours into it but I'm done. fuck this game.

Why can't you take it anymore? What part are you on?
For those of you who have ToV, when you change weapons and armors does the character's looks change too?
Only the weapons. But I'm guessing this might have some clothing items that will change the character's entire look. For example in Symphonia everyone had beach wear so the characters would run around in trunks & bikini's.
Why can't you take it anymore? What part are you on?
Just got past the part where the Crusaders are setting the trap for Sin and he destroys them all. I can't stand these characters or the voice acting. The battle system is okay but I wish I had more control over the sphere grid and how I could set up the characters. I'll probably get around to finishing it later. I remember I didn't like it until about the area right before you go into the Ronso mountains (was it called the scar or something) the first time I tried to play through.

Sleep now. Tomorrow, FFXII?

Also the first armor piece changes as well. Yuri's gloves, Estelle's shield, Rita's book, etc.

I think it's kinda cool. He's running around letting the world know, "Don't f*ck with me."
Also the first armor piece changes as well. Yuri's gloves, Estelle's shield, Rita's book, etc.
I didn't know that. I haven't acquired any new sub items yet. I guess they're far & few.

Yeah, I only just started getting them and I'm like 10 hours in. They have to be synthesized.

I have a good question for everyone: Which RPG has your favorite story & why?

I would say Suikoden V. JRPGs always have the same "save the world from darkness" story. However SV was more of a political drama which made it less predictable and more engaging.
I have a good question for everyone: Which RPG has your favorite story & why?
My first thoughts on this were Shadow Hearts: Covenant, DragonQuest VIII, and Persona 3. Sadly though, I quickly realized that while each of these games are in my top 10 RPGs none of them really have a story that blew me away - snippets of story and character development, yes, but not overall story. Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, and Final Fantasy IV all fit the bill too.

Me thinks I'll have to wait for some more discussion before I decide. Suikoden V was a good choice and I agree that the political edge of the story really helps it stand out, but it's still not my favorite story. Right now I'm leaning to Final Fantasy VI.

EDIT: By 'leaning to' I mean 'It'll probably change tomorrow. And the next day.'

I honestly liked BoFIV's; it wasn't super deep, but I really liked the atmosphere of the game and how the story really, REALLY fit in. Not to mention it was strengthened by fantastic characters and presented touching moments that twisted into themes of corruption and such.

I don't finish much of my RPGs anymore, so the list I have to choose from isn't very long. My all-time favorite is KOTOR. My second is probably Tales of Symphonia. The third is Valkyrie Profile (I played it on the PSP). The story for ToS and VP gave me an epic-ness feeling to it. Honorable mention for Fire Emblem. The story isn't anything great, but I had a lot of attachment to the characters.

The problem with the RPGs I played and haven't finish is that some games can take too long to finish. The story has to go with the flow for my levels. If I have to grind too much, then it disrupts the story, and I would lose interest to the story (and for the game as well).

As for the games that I actually didn't finish, FFVI is pretty high up. Mass Effect is pretty good. FFXII is not bad either.

On a side note, it just so happen that ToS and VP are first games that I play on their respective systems (GCN and PSP). ToV, when it finally ship and arrive, will also be my first 360 game. I don't know how much this would affect my rankings.

Easily the best story ever is Planescape Torment. There are no ifs ands or buts about it. I love Shadow Hearts Cov, FFX, FFT and many others. But no game even comes close to Planescape Torment. The game not only has a good basic plot but it delves into Philosphy and so many deep and crazy topics. Its the closest I have seen a games story come to a work of art. Like I said...no game even comes close to scratching it.

I don't remember it very well, but I thought SV's story was indistinguishable from the story of I, II, and IV. Some asshole is starting a war, win it. Whereas III, there was a good, interesting reason for starting a war other than 'rraaaaah I want to own everything.'

Stolen and repurposed:

I need to replay Planescape Torment though. Never got to the end :whistle2:#

KOTOR for the twist and for doing justice to the Star Wars brand. Yes, it's about saving the world but that twist puts it up there with any game I've finished.

Going to have to go with KOTOR. The twist was really well done. Also it doesn't have to be about saving the world. It can be about taking it over.

Man, I've forgotten all about Planescape Torment. That was an awesome game.

On that note, what ever happened to the D&D dungeon crawlers? There hasn't been any released in years. Games like Planescape, Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, Icewind Dale, Pools of Radiance, etc. Man, I've put TONS of hours into these games and would love to see some new ones.

My fav RPG stories (you'll notice I don't play a lot of older console RPGs):

  1. Baldur's Gate II
Ranking it up high because I enjoyed the characters a lot. Easily one of BioWare's better stories.
  2. Deus Ex
Yeah, it's mostly just a bunch of current conspiracy theories mashed up. But I enjoyed the story, and it had a realistic charm to it.
  3. KOTOR
Took a while for something to pop in my head for #3. Like mentioned earlier, the twist was done well and the story still had remnants of what I love about BioWare RPGs: the character stories.
I have a good question for everyone: Which RPG has your favorite story & why?
I have a bad habit of not finishing games so I dont have a big list to choose from. I would have to probably go with The World Ends With You since its setting and story are so unique compared to anything that I have ever played.
