RPG Thread IV is the worst in the series
That's funny. Every single review I read, the reviewer did get that far, and some even further. Also, from what I've read in those latter reviews, that wide open section doesn't last.
It depends on how much you rush through it. Id imagine you could keep tunneling and get through it in like 4 hours, but if you farm like crazy to get the stuff to make the ultimate weapons its gonna take you a good while.
I also like the battle system in FFXIII. The translation and voice acting (particularly for Vanille) is atrocious.
It's especially annoying near the beginning of the game, but improves in later chapters. Unfortunately the frequent moaning does not go away.

Vanille and frequent moaning gets me incredibly excited.

When do you start banking gil and materials? I'm 24 hours in and can't buy anything and have no materials to upgrade my weapons.

^This. Im not used to a game where you don't get ANY money from defeating enemies.

I'll agree the lack of currency in FF13 is quite odd. I'm enjoying the hell out of it so far and am about 17 hours in. I'm kind of a Final Fantasy Fanboy, so I won't sit and argue with such a biased view, but I will say it is one of the funner games I've played in awhile. I loved Lost Odyssey and since have had some trouble getting into an RPG.

Hope does bitch a lot, doesn't he?

I think Final Fantasy XIII is the only game I've spent such a large amount on. I think currently I've spent over $600 on the games and other FF13 items.
Hope does bitch a lot, doesn't he?
He bitched enough to make me think twice about playing. Seriously I just can't deal with characters like that anymore...

I didn't realize until about chapter 8 that I'm supposed to sell some of the items I've received. Anything that says, "...sells for a premium." is supposed to be sold. You can farm for gil in ch. 9 as enemies drop credit chips and platinum chips which sell for 500g and 5000g respectively.

Sazh needs in his own game; I would buy it. He's the man.

I can safely say I'll more than likely be spending some money on FFXIII items. I'm pretty excited to see how XIII Verses will turn out.

As far as Hope goes, I've been told he has great character development. His character is of a young boy dealing with some pretty heavy things, so I don't hate his character at all.

He is still a shitty character now.

^ I dislike kids running around my RPGs in general. I think Ken from Persona 3 is the only one I could tolerate. Hope isn't too bad but he's far from my favorite character.
Also Lightning/Szah/Hope are the killer combo. 1 Commando 2 Ravagers.
Switch out Szah for Fang. That way you have a sentinel as well which gives you access to all the classes.

Once you hit chapter 11 you can start farming for materials.

The problem with Hope is how he deals with it. All he does is whine and blame the wrong people for things that happened. I wish Lightning would have just killed him and been done with it. I don't understand why JRPGs always need to have stupid characters like this.

I think it's an age thing for me. I just can't deal with those characters anymore. They annoy the fuck out of me. It's one reason I've drifted over to WRPGs. The parties tend to be all adults.

Something that annoys me about JRPGs in general is that the entire cast is very young. Anyone over the age of 20 is considered a hardend war vet while anyone over 30 is a an old fogy.

What annoys me is that all the characters look and act older than they supposedly are. Lightning, for instance, doesn't look or act anything like a 21-year old.

One of my favorites is the total lack of scale in Chrono Cross' height and weight measurements. Fargo is 6', 163 lbs? LOLOLOLOL. Dude's built like a linebacker. Same with Zoah, who should probably be listed about 250.

The age thing bothers me, too. Especially since I'm not a kid or a teenager anymore, I don't like playing as a 16 (or even younger) year old pulling off superhuman feats and saving the world.

Without trying to contradict myself, many of the servicemen in WWI and WWII were hardened war vets at the age of 20. So there's some basis for having that trope in RPGs, even if it's pretty lame.

She is a total bitch. At least they got that part right.

Not to get too off topic, but the young hardened vet's aren't limited to just WWI and WWII. They are all over the world, from Cambodia, Columbia, and here in the U.S. I get tired of the glorified image we give the US in their involvement in both wars. The events of WWI and WWII are great and history changing but that war experience is not limited to WW vets.

It was just an example he made. Relax.

I didn't mean to come across as angry or anything. Just an observation I've made over the past few years.

Cliche #5 - Logan's Run Rule

I love that list :D Contributed to it back in the day, too.

Agree that Hope is shitty about 6 hours in - I hope he gets more tolerable. I'm definitely not digging the Hope/Vanille story line so far.
She is a total bitch. At least they got that part right.
I like Lightnining, she's probably my favorite character so far. TBH, I'm glad they have a strong, independant, female lead in the game. It's a nice change. Whiny Yuna doesn't count.

Keep playing, they give Vanille an even more annoying story and attempt to salvage Hope.

I tried that but just watching all those buffs stack up so fast and then switching to tri-disaster to fuck anything up is just way to satisfying.

I liked FFX-2 Yuna (for the most part). Hated FFX Yuna.

And what about Terra? :p Everyone seems to forget about her.

I hated Lightning for the first several hours, but I'm warming up to her. I will admit it's nice to see a female lead protagonist again. I'm about 30 hours in and I haven't seen much leadership from her. If her picture wasn't on the cover and the game didn't force me to have her as leader I'd be confused about who the MC actually is.

Was Terra really the protagonist?

Id say FFXII was the worst about who the main character was. Was it Vaan? He seemed like a tool the entire time, and Ashe and Basch did most of the choices and leading in the game.

Also that new Wii RPG from Mistwalker, The Last Story( I think thats the name) sounds like it has some really great music to it. Is it Uematsu doing the soundtrack? I can't find anything on it.
Final Fantasy Complete Works and Dissidia point to "yes".
I feel like FF6 was more of a group thing. You start the game with Terra, but you don't even have to beat the game with her.

I think they wanted Bosch to be the main character but they had to rewrite the script because Bosch was unpopular and so they put Vaan and Penelo in.

Towards the end of the game I felt that it more of Vaan and Penelo being observers in the grand scheme of things. An interesting perspective but obviously not the original intention.

XII's main was totally Balthier. I mean, c'mon, he's the leading man (also the only character other than Basch I really liked in the game).

Yeah, the closest FF6 gets to having a lead is with Celes in the second half of the game.

Of course he was unpopular, he's the only PC that isn't a clear expy for a Star Wars character. :)
No, XII's main was clearly Fran's ass.
That totally made me LOL.

On another note, my boyfriend text me and said my Final Fantasy 13 CE came in the mail. YAY! And I didnt even have to pay those jacked up Ebay prices.

I was loving Persona 4. Great story, characters, the game flowed well.

And then, I was reminded I was playing a SMT game.

Running around in the "Bath House" and doing some leveling up, getting quest items, and wham, some little sucker casts a Mamudo and the MC is dead............There went the last hour and a half of my life.

I'm seriously beginning to question my patience with these games. The stories are great, the visuals are stunning, but this random ass instant deaths have got to go.

Random deaths are super annoying in SMT games. It gets to the point where I go all out to find something that will negate death spells instead of progressing in the game.

Started Persona 4, but then Pokemon showed up at home. Damn those addicting little monsters. There goes my next month of gaming.

Don't you get a bunch of homunculi in P4? I'm not sure if that's what they were called, but you should have a little bit of insurance against instant death.

I think this whole trend of "if the MC dies, you get Game Over: should stop. It's the most irritating thing to get really far, only to have your MC die last minute because the rest of your team failed to heal you. I had issues with it in P3, and FFXIII has the same thing going on. At least when you die in Final Fantasy, you just restart right before the last battle.

^On Resonance of Fate, my copy won't even be in until tomorrow. I think there's been some delay in shipment since people on another forum were complaining about Gamestop not having their game in.

That made sense in P3 since you only controlled the main character. I wouldn't trust the retarded AI to battle with out him...

Mine will be here today. I will start it up, but it seems like if you like Goofy shit and JRPGS it could be right up your alley.

Un freaking real.

I'm going at it in Persona 4 again tonight. I get about an hour into the Bath House Dungeon trying just to reach the top level to get to the bonus boss. And it happens again.

I get caught by having a fucking Persona with Weak Garu and those stupid Crying Tables cast neverending Maguru's and I have absolutely no chance to fucking do anything.

WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Muahahaha I love SMT for that exact reason. Shit aint easy dawg.

Also RoF is a strange game but I only put in 30 mins. The battles are fun, and Nolan North sounds so out of place. Its pretty good so far. Plus I dig these anime worlds with only guns way more then the typical sword/magic bs combo we always get.
