That was a good article. Funny, as a kid I never thought about what went into translating, I always under the impressions that it was a simple task. That article really puts the task into perspective. It also explained why we never saw Tobal 2. Intresting that they wanted to localize it but couldn't.

i think the sad part is that as the translations got better, the games got worse.

perhaps they should hire the crappy translators back, and maybe america will like it more.

Wow, excellent read Ryu. I love this kind of behind the scenes stuff, and imho we just don't see enough of it. I'd love to see more into the creative process of coming up with the ideas for characters, enemies, environments etc.

Also, Golden Sun 1 is starting to grate on me. IDK, I loved it at the time, but the encounter rate is rediculously high and the characters are kind of boring to me now. Maybe I should just jump into the DS game instead of replaying 1 and 2...

Surprised to see such a good article these days... The guy who does the Ivalice world dialogue does an amazing job

Now I want to go back and try to finish FFIX

So per the new Nintendo Power, Tales of the Abyss is coming to 3DS. Now I want the stupid machine, between that and Devil Survivor 1 and 2.

Pretty sure Devil Survivor 2 is coming to the DS, not the 3DS.

So out of curiosity, how long does it take you guys on average to finish an RPG? Do you guys finish a ~40 hour RPG in a week/month/more etc?

Seems like some of you just blaze through them all at an incredible speed.

Wow uhmm..I'm pretty slow I'd say most of the time, unless a game totally engrosses me like say ME2. (I would stay home on Sundays rather then go to church/in-laws and play 9-10 hours while family was out).

Lost Odyssey as 55 hours took me about a month and a half I'd say. Tales of Vesperia at 80 hours took me about the same. It varies on what play time I have.

Right now I'm not playing as much so 34 hours of Dragon Age 2 took me a month as well.

Depends on what I've got going on and how addictive the game is. Sometimes, it'll take me like 3 weeks to get through a game like The Witcher (which took like 25-30 hours.) Other times, I'll blow through a 40 hour game like FFXII in a week.

Basically, I play through RPGs really quickly, so long as school doesn't get in the way.

Totally depends on how engrossed I am in the game and whether other stuff comes up. I blazed through two ~27 hour playthroughs of Dragon Age II, and completed the achievements, in like two weeks. I have other games that I've been playing on and off for 4 or more years.

I just beat Costume Quest tonight, what a great game! I can't believe it took me this long to play it. One of the most refreshing RPGs I've played in a long time.

RPGs have always been my favorite genre, but man, I get more distracted playing an RPG than say an action game. I was just looking at all my unplayed games, and more than 90% of them are roleplaying games. At this rate, I just don't think I'll catch up. Granted, playing RPGs on handheld systems has helped, but that still leaves a ton of console games.

I think one of my main problems is sleep and the fact that I sleep so much. Maybe if I cut back to only 6 hours of sleep a day, I can actually catch up -_-

I'm really slow. I only get to play maybe 30-45 minutes on the weekdays and two hours on the weekends if I'm lucky. I then don't usually play the same game every night as well.

So I'll devote maybe 2-4 hours a week to a game. For a 40 hour RPG it takes me...months.

Like others said, it depends how engrossed I am. Some games will take me months to finish (those I'm actually more likely to never finish) whereas some games I blaze through in no time flat. I beat P3P in about a week.

As others have said, it depends on how engrossing it is and how much free time I have. I think I did 60 hrs of Dragon Age in about a week and a half or so, Mass Effect 2 took less than a week, but for example I've been playing Tales of Vesperia for two weeks now and only have about 20 hours in. It's largely due to school/lab work for me though.

I shoot for about a half hour a day on weekdays so it takes me a long time. Persona 4 is the only game I really played for hours at a time.

On the same note portable games RPGs take me a lot longer then console RPGS. (I don't play the portable as much).

FFIV is the exception so far ,I'm at 16 hours or so in a week and a half.

1-3 months depending on how addictive it is.

I could never get into that game, it was just too long in between save points due to the high encounter rate.

I loved it the first time I played it, but I actually started it again last week and it took 45 minutes to get to the first save, making me wait through inane dialogue about roofs and other crap I don't care about. That's when I decided it hasn't aged well and put it back in the box.

God, I hated that game. I actually finished it because I was so starved for an RPG to play at the particular time that it came out, and not knowing in advance that it was only part 1 of a 2 part story, the non-ending just added insult to injury.

I'm glad people are finally starting to realize that Golden Sun is not a very good game. It was novel at the time, because it was basically a SNES RPG you could take with you... but it's perhaps the most generic game ever made. Nothing about that game was particularly good, but it wasn't awful, either. It had no reason to exist.

I think at the time it filled a niche which wasn't being filled by anything else, but it's definitely not as playable now.

I do want to play the DS one, which is why I went back and wanted to play the first two again, but I think I'll just end up skipping them.

Me too, lol. GS 1 and 2 are going back into storage, and I'm going to keep my eye out for a good deal on the DS one.

RPGs usually take 40-70 hours for me, but I complete them within a month or so. When I play an RPG, that is all I play as long as the setting is able to capture me. I do love to grind in RPGs.

If I really like an RPG it takes me a few weeks to over a month to complete. Some games (even though I likd them) have taken me over a year to beat. Abyss & Nocturne come to mind. It took me 3 years to finally finish Blue Dragon.

I will say that Demon's Souls took me a few days to finish, but played half way through New Game++ before my PS3 ylod on me.

FF13 took me around 3 weeks to finish. Fallout 3 was 40 hours or so and New Vegas has a lot less time on it, around 14 hours and I'm pretty close to be done with it.

I think I took a month each for Etrian Odyssey 1 and 2, putting 100+ hours in each. Final Fantasy 8 took me a month at 108 hours with 100% completion (every card, every blue magic etc.). Secret of Mana was one I played at least once a year, and the last time I played it, it took my about 7 hours. I tried to play it on the Wii, and I was no longer as fast at it. Strange Journey I think I've been playing for a year, and I'm at 74 hours. I forget how many hours my last FF7 play-through was, but it was around 65 hours, including getting KotR and killing the weapons. I don't remember FF1,2,3,5 much at all, because I just blazed through them. Would have been the same with FF4 and 6, but I went back and l played those two again, cause I liked them enough.

When I was in school still, I had a lot more time to play. I mean, I logged like 180+ days on FFXI... Now, because of cooking, cleaning, pets, jobs, etc, it takes me forever to finish even short games.

I feel you. Having a job limited my gaming, then I was let go the same day the PSN went down. A lot of SP games were finished because of this :)

Like a few other people have mentioned trying to get gaming in around chores, work, and other interests can be a little difficult; recently I've had a lot of trouble finishing any RPGs due to the fact that unless I get really into one and decide to spend much of a weekend on it, they will take me months to finish just one (and it is hard for me to stay focused on one game for so long, which usually results in me playing shorter action games on the side and sometimes not ever finishing the RPG I was working on).

When I was younger and in school I could usually knock out an RPG in about a month though. And, I think the fastest I ever remember beating a decent length RPG (I mean I've beaten Chrono Trigger a ton and can do it in 2-3 days but it is only like 15 hours long on first playthrough and like half to a third of that for a plus game) was Mana Khemia which was about a 40 hour game that I finished in 3-4 days. My longest game was SMT: Nocturne which took me around 4 years since I refused to restart and kept getting stuck on the special bosses since I wanted the True Demon ending (which is the ending I got when I finally did beat it).

Seems like some of you just blaze through them all at an incredible speed.

I usually play RPGs a few hours a day up until the 20 mark after which I get bored and don't play them more than an hour a day, so it takes me about a month to beat most games.

If it's something I'm really into or if it's a Dragon Quest game, it usually takes me a few weeks to finish.
Looks like the first Wii localization domino is going to fall, with a strong indication that Xenoblade is coming stateside:
Wow, after all this time I really thought this game was a lost cause.

Sometimes it takes me a while to get through RPGs, even if I really like them. Being married with 2 kids (8 & 4) eats up a lot of time.

yeay yeay yeaaaaayyyyy~~!!!

Hey now, any machine that soon will be able to play Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger deserves a spot in your home.

I know I use my Wii more for the Virtual Console than for actual Wii games.

If only I didn't have 3 other systems on which I could play those games.

I'm squirreling away Wii games to play when I move out of my parents house and have the TV all to myself. My Wii backlog alone is a shelf thick.

The Wii in our house gets a lot of play. Then again, I have a 9 year old daughter. That doesn't stop me from playing Tatsunoko, Sin & Punishment, all the first party stuff, and many other games.
